NEW YORK -- Robinson Cano drove in a run and scored another in a most unwelcome return to Yankee Stadium, helping the Seattle Mariners beat New York 6-3 Tuesday night for their fourth win in five games. Amid lusty boos from a modest crowd on a rainy, 46-degree night, Cano began his first game in the Bronx since joining Seattle this winter for $240 million with a wink -- at Yankees starter CC Sabathia (3-3). Cano got a mock cheer when he struck out to end the inning, then was met with chants of "You sold out!" from the Bleacher Creatures when he took his spot at second base. When Cano grounded out to first base in the fourth, first baseman Mark Teixeira gave him a smile after the close play. The five-time All-Star was even booed when he cleanly handled a grounder. Chris Young (1-0) gave up a second-inning homer to Teixeira and not much else in 5 2-3 innings to earn his first win since 2012. Mike Zunino had a career-high four hits, one courtesy of a replay review that sparked a four-run fifth inning. Fernando Rodney gave up an RBI single to Brett Gardner in the ninth before striking out Derek Jeter and Carlos Beltran with two runners on base. Cano really riled up the crowd in the fifth after driving in Seattles first run with a groundball to Teixeira with the bases loaded. Seattles big inning started with Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon winning a challenge on a bang-bang play at first. Zunino, the catcher whose errant throw to second in the third inning on Gardners stolen base gave New York a 2-0 lead, was ruled to have beaten out a grounder to second base. Sabathia gave up a single to Willie Bloomquist and a bunt hit to Abraham Almonte to load the bases. Yankees second baseman Brian Roberts was playing near the bag and did not reach first to cover when Teixeira fielded the bunt. Cano hit a sharp grounder to first for the run, Corey Hart followed with a two-run double and Justin Smoak made it 4-2 with a single. In the seventh, Cano reached on an infield single to second base and stole second. He was greeted there by Jeter, who gave his former double-play partner a friendly tap on the chest. Earlier, Jeter had playfully run his fingers through Canos fuzzy beard. Facial hair was no-no during Canos nine years with New York. Pinch-hitter Dustin Ackley and Zunino had RBI singles in the seventh, more than enough support to give Young his first victory since Sept. 2, 2012, for the New York Mets. He missed last season after having shoulder surgery and was decisionless in four appearances this year. The 6-foot-10 Princetonian held New York to three hits and three walks. Sabathia was chased after putting two on in the sixth, his shortest outing since July 26. He gave up nine hits and four runs in five-plus innings. He struck out six. NOTES: Mariners first base coach Andy Van Slyke was ejected by third base umpire Adam Hamari in the bottom of the eighth. It came shortly after Cano was called out on a check-swing appeal. ... Suspended Yankees RHP Michael Pineda cut short a simulated game in Tampa after experiencing tightness in an upper back muscle. He will have an MRI. ATLANTA -- Freddie Freeman heard fans calling his name and, with dark clouds moving in, he knew the grounds crew had just removed the cover from the infield tarp. What better time for a game-winning hit? Freemans single to the centre-field wall scored Jason Heyward from second base with two outs in the 10th inning on Sunday, lifting the Atlanta Braves to a 1-0 win over the Cincinnati Reds. "You live for moments like that when you want to be a big league player," Freeman said. "You hear the crowd chanting your name and you want to come through. So it was a pretty cool moment." Freemans big hit saved the game from an almost certain wait through bad weather. "I was like, Yes, we dont have to go to any more innings and we wont have a rain delay," Freeman said. "We were all thinking about it." Sure enough, minutes after the postgame celebration ended on the field, a thunderstorm brought lightning and heavy rain to Turner Field. Cincinnatis Johnny Cueto and Atlantas Julio Teheran were spectacular. Each allowed only three hits in eight scoreless innings before giving way to relievers. "It was a great game," Cueto said through a translator. "We both competed. Things went good for us, him and me." Cueto struck out 11. He has allowed only one run in his last three starts, leaving him with a 1.15 ERA. Teheran also has given up just one run in his last three starts. His 1.47 ERA has helped the Braves starters lead the majors with their 1.57 mark. "He just keeps getting better and better," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. With two outs in the 10th, Heyward hit a single up the middle off J.J. Hoover (1-3). B.J. Upton followed with a grounder that bounced off Hoovers glove toward shortstop for an infield hit. "I thought I had it and it kind of hit a second gear and just tipped out of my glove," Hoover said. Left-hander Manny Parra was summoned to face Freeman, who hit a second-pitch fastball for a drive that bounced on the warning track beyond centre fielder Billy Hamiltons reach. Braves players swarmed Freeman at second base following Atlantas first three-game sweep of the Reds since 2008. Freeman tried to duck from the swarm of congratulaatory slaps and swats.dddddddddddd "I got hit from every angle, but its always a good feeling," he said. The Reds couldnt take advantage of a scoring opportunity in the 10th. Ryan Ludwick hit a one-out single off David Carpenter and moved to second on Zack Cozarts two-out single. Pitcher Mike Leake pinch-ran for Ludwick at second base. Atlanta left-hander Ian Thomas (1-0) ended the threat by getting pinch-hitter Roger Bernadina to pop up. Cueto, coming off back-to-back, complete-game wins over Pittsburgh, finished one strikeout away from his career high of 12 set April 16 against the Pirates. Teheran struck out five and walked two. Jordan Walden maintained the impressive pitching by recording two strikeouts in a perfect ninth. Reds manager Bryan Price and pitcher Homer Bailey were ejected in the first inning after a replay ruling went against them. Price asked for a replay after first-base umpire Greg Gibson called Upton safe on a pickoff throw from Johnny Cueto. The replays shown on the video board indicated first baseman Joey Votto may have applied the tag before Upton reached the bag. Price came back out of the dugout after the ruling that the call stands, meaning there was not "clear and convincing" evidence to overturn it. Price was ejected by crew chief Bill Miller, the second-base umpire. Miller also tossed Bailey, who argued from the Reds dugout. "In the end, you have the biggest Jumbotron in the country out there in centre field that would strongly suggest that the runner was out on the pickoff," Price said. "And then to say that hes not seems to contradict what everyone in the ballpark thought was an out. I didnt get it. It didnt make any sense to me." NOTES: The Reds, playing their first extra-inning game of the season, completed a 5-5 road trip. ... RHP Alfredo Simon will face Cubs RHP Jeff Samardzija on Monday in Cincinnati. ... KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Bruce Chen will never overpower with a blazing fastball. Hell never step onto the mound and strike fear into the hearts of opposing hitters. Hes awfully adept at getting them out anyway. The veteran left-hander kept Minnesota off balance all night, outdueling Francisco Liriano and making a lone run scored in the second inning stand up to give the Kansas City Royals a 1-0 victory over the Twins on Tuesday night. "He did a great job from the first inning on. Hed speed their bats up and slow them down," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "He had good tempo and he was banging strikes." Chen (5-5) allowed four hits without a walk to win for the fifth time in six starts, which came on the heels of a miserable start to the season that made some question whether the two-year deal he was given by Kansas City was really worth it. Well, hes proving just how valuable he is to a patchwork rotation. "Pitching is contagious. You say, You know what? Lets keep it going," said Chen, who added to a pair of shutouts logged by Kansas City already on this six-game homestand. "This whole pitching staff is pushing each other." Chen was pushing Liriano, too. The Twins left-hander allowed only four hits in six innings, but three of them came in the second when the Twins failure to turn a double play proved costly. It allowed Brayan Pena to send an RBI single rolling through the left side of the infield for the games only run. Greg Holland worked around an error in the eighth for Kansas City, and Jonathan Broxton left runners on first and second in the ninth for his 14th save of the season. "Youre just out there trying to compete," said Broxton, who got some help from a couple of nifty plays by his defence. "You have to bear down and let your defence work." Chen retired the first six batters he faced, and then helped himself after Brian Dozier singled to lead off the third by catching him trying to steal. The only other hits Chen allowed were a double by Dozier and singles by Darin Mastroianni and Jamey Carroll. "He changed speeds well. He kept us off balance," said the Twins Denard Span, who went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts. "He threw a lot of different arm angles. He threw over the top, three quarters and a couple of times a sidearm with two strikes. He mixed it up. "Hes the type of pitcher when hes on, he can do what he did tonight." Liriano, who had just snapped a personal six-game skid, kept Minnesota in the game. He struck out eight while yielding only one walk in six sharp innings, even matching a major league record when he struck out four batters in the fourth -- Jeff Francoeur swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt, allowing him to reach base with the strikeout. It was the third time this season that a pitcher has fanned four in an inning. "My confidence has been there," he said. "Its all about location." The only blemish against Liriano -- the only real blemish in the game -- came in the second inning, when Francoeur singled and Eric Hosmer chopped a pitch back at Liriano. He whirled around and threw to Dozier covering second base, but his throw to Justin Morneau at first was not in time to get Hosmer hustling down the line. The double play would have ended the inning, but instead, Hosmer promptly stole second base to get into scoring position. Thats when Pena slipped a grounder between third base and shortstop for an RBI single. With Chen on the mound and one of the American Leagues best bullpens ready to work, that lone run proved to be enough for Kansas City. "The bullpen has been tremendous for us," Chen said. "Liriano did a real good job. He had great stuff. But we were able to scramble a run." Notes: Twins C Joe Mauer (sprained right thumb) was out of the lineup for the second straight game. ... LOUIS -- Missouri coach Frank Haith has been suspended for five games by the NCAA, which found he inadequately monitored his former assistants interactions with a disgraced Miami booster and then tried to cover up a five-figure hush money payment to keep potential violations hidden. The NCAA released the findings of its two-year investigation into convicted felon Nevin Shapiros relationship with Miami athletics on Tuesday and said that Haith, the former Hurricanes basketball coach, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance with its rules. The investigation found that Haith and Miami assistant coach Jake Morton provided Shapiro $10,000 after he threatened to expose previous improper contact with high school recruits and amateur coaches, as well as other unflattering details involving a booster now serving a 20-year prison term for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme. Shapiro, who had basketball season tickets with a courtside seat, initially demanded a large loan from Haith after he experienced financial trouble or the return a $50,000 donation from a benefit bowling tournament he had hosted. The coach refused. Morton, who joined Western Kentucky as an assistant coach in 2011 but resigned in April as its director of basketball operations, then loaned Shapiro at least $6,000, which he later repaid. The NCAA also said that Haith helped Morton and two other assistants pay $10,000 to Shapiros mother and "attempted to cover up the boosters threats to disclose incriminating information." Missouri plays four of its first give games this season at Mizzou Arena, starting with Southeastern Louisiana on Nov. 8. Haith will also miss home games against Southern Illinois, Gardner-Webb and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, as well as a Nov. 16 game against Hawaii at the Sprint Center in Kansas City. He also must attend an NCAA rules seminar next summer. Haith has 15 days to appeal the Committee on Infractions penalties, which dont affect Missouri as an institution. School officials did not respond to several requests for comment, though Haith, who came to Columbia in 2011 after seven years at Miami, was scheduled to meet with reporters later Tuesday. His Florida-based attorney did not immediately respond to an interview request. While much of the 102-page report focuses on the far more successful Miami football program, the NCAA inquiry also opens a rare public window into the seamier side of cultivating big-money boosters -- even those, like Shapiro, with substantial baggage.dddddddddddd Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports that he steered a $10,000 payment to secure recruit DeQuan Jones commitment to Miami in 2008 with Haiths knowledge. The NCAA said it found no evidence to support that claim. The report also said an associate athletics director in charge of fundraising guided Shapiro toward the Miami mens basketball program after the booster became disenchanted with the football teams losing 2007 season under first-year coach Randy Shannon. Haith and Morton told NCAA investigators they shared several meals with Shapiro, attended a concert together and visited a strip club "to create donor relationships." The report found that Haith provided inconsistent answers during multiple interviews with NCAA investigators, including conflicting accounts of when he reported Shapiros shakedown attempt to athletic director Paul Dee. "Because of the many inconsistencies the former head mens basketball coach reported during his interviews with the enforcement staff and the institutions, the committee does not find his version of events to be credible," the report concludes. Infractions Committee Chairman Britton Banowsky, who is also Conference USA commissioner, reiterated those concerns. "It was difficult for the committee, and maybe even the members of the enforcement staff, to know precisely what really was going on in the program, given all the conflicting information," he said. In Haiths three interviews with NCAA investigators between October 2011 and September 2012, he provided three different explanations as to why he paid his assistants $3,200 advances that they normally would have had to wait to receive from summer basketball camps. Haith requested the third interview soon after his second sit-down, citing concerns that he had given "inaccurate" information and was "confused about the timing of what (he) knew and when (he) knew it." Beyond Haiths penalties, Miamis football team will lose a total of nine scholarships and the Hurricanes mens basketball team will lose three over a three-year period starting in 2014. The school will also serve three years of probation. Two former Miami football assistants and one ex-basketball assistant received two-year show-cause bans, which effectively keep the penalized parties out of the college coaching ranks. ' ' '

The Saskatchewan Roughriders didnt wait long to make their intentions known on CFL Canadian Draft Day. Team president and CEO Jim Hopson announced Thursday morning that they would be selecting offensive lineman Ben Heenan first overall - and they did. Heenan, at 6-foot-four and 310 pounds, is expected to bolster the Roughriders offensive line even if he doesnt earn a starting job right away. "I saw Ben Heenan last year at the East/West game and I told people he will be the first pick overall last May," said Jeff Cummins, coach of the Acadia Axemen and one of TSNs draft analysts. "He has great feet and moves like an athlete 100 lbs lighter than he is. He can be a plug in and play guy right now for Saskatchewan." TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor said that getting offensive line help was not Saskatchewans biggest need, but taking a local prospect who could potentially play well for the Roughriders for 15 years was a "safe" choice. TSN Football Analyst Duane Forde agreed, saying Heenan will provide great value for the Roughriders. The TSN panel was not unanimous, though, as Chris Schultz said the Riders should have targeted a player who could provide more impact, saying Heenan is a good player but receiver Shamawd Chambers of Wilfrid Laurier would have been his pick. Heenan sent a message to supportive Saskatchewan fans on his Twitter account, saying, "Thank you everyone!! I look forward to joining #ridernation". The B.C. Lions traded with Edmonton to get the second pick and selected defensive tackle Jabar Westerman from Eastern Michigan, a player that TSNs Farhan Lalji said the Lions had rated head and shoulders above all the other defensive lineman in the draft. Forde said scouts were really impressed with Westermans game tape and having a need on the defensive line prompted the Lions to trade up. Edmonton, who has good players on their defensive interior, was comfortable trading down to the fourth spot and picking up extra picks later in the draft. Winnipeg traded two second-round picks to Hamilton to move into the No. 3 slot and selected offensive lineman Tyson Pencer from Washington State. "Tyson is an extremely talented lineman who has experience playing the tackle position," said Bombers GM Joe Mack. "We look forward to him becoming a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for many years." Forde, who had Pencer ranked sixth among offensive linemen, considered the pick to be "off the board" but said if he can play tackle it could be a good pick. Schultz loved the selection, saying the 6-foot-7 Pencer looked very fluid at CFL E-Camp despite being 330 pounds and could be a differnece maker on a line that needs help. The Bombers had five picks in all. Hamilton used that newly acquired second-round pick (eighth overall) to take defensive back Courtney Stephen from Northern Illinois. Stephen will be returning to school next season and wont be in the Ticats lineup until at least 2013. After trading down, Edmonton selected Virgina offensive lineman Auston Pasztor fourth overall. Pasztor has a camp invite from the Minnesota Vikings, but the Eskimos were comfortable taking the chance that he will head north sooner than later. With the fifth pick, the Calgary Stampeders selected defensive end Ameet Pall of Wofford. "Ameet Pall is a consistently hard worker on the football field, in the classroom and in the weight room," said Stampeders head coach and GM John Hufnagel. "He is a good leader both on the field and off the field. He will contribute to our special teams and compete at the defensive line position." Edmonton made its second pick at No. 6 overall, taking wide receiver Shamawd Chambers from Wilfrid Laurier. "Chambers in unique in terms of his combination of size, speed and athletic ability," Forde noted. Chambers has a tryout booked with the Philadelphia Eagles, but Naylor said the Eskimos expect him to be in the CFL this season. Schultz said Chambers was the best athlete available in this draft. B.C. made its second pick of the first round at No. 7 overall, closing the round by taking offensive lineman Kirby Fabien of Calgary. The Lions have some depth on the offensive line, but Fabien should compete for a starting spot. "Were very pleased with our results so far today," said Lions GM Wally Buono. "We believe that we have selected two young men so far that enable us to remain strong on both sides of the line of scrimmage." Stefan Ptaszek, coach of the McMaster Marauders, told TSN Fabien has a great first step and should be able to play tackle in the CFL. The Toronto Argonauts finally got on the board in Round 2, taking lineman Cleyon Laing from Iowa State with the ninth overall selection. "Cleyon is a strong, physical presence inside," said Argonauts GM Jim Barker. "Hes a big man with great athleticism and these types of players dont come along every year." The Montreal Alouettes first pick - 11th overall in the second round - was running back Patrick Lavoie from the Laval Rouge et Or. Heenan was ranked second on the CFL Central Scouting list - behind defensive end Tyrone Crawford of Windsor, Ontario. Crawford was was taken in third round of the NFL Draft last weekend by the Dallas Cowboys. The CFL draft position of other Canadian prospects could also be affected by the NFL. Defensive lineman Christo Bilukidi of Georgia State, an Ottawa native, was chosen in the NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Austin Pasztor of Virginia, a native of Langton, Ontario, signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent and Wilfrid Laurier wide receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ontario will be attending mini-camp with the Philadelphia Eagles next week. Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph made the game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining, as the Memphis Grizzlies rallied past the Dallas Mavericks, 104-103. Randolph scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half for the Grizzlies, who stopped Dallas winning streak at eight games. Randolph also grabbed nine rebounds. Mike Conley added 17 points and 10 assists for Memphis, which got 16 points and 10 boards from Marc Gasol. Jason Terry finished with 26 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who also saw a nine-game home winning streak come to an end. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in with 23 points. Terrys jumper with 1:09 to play put the Mavericks ahead by three, 101-98. Randolph then made a pair of free throws at the other end to make it a one- point game. After Shawn Marion missed a runner, Brendan Haywood blocked O.J. Mayos jumper. The ball was tipped under the basket to Shane Battier, who put in an easy layup for a 102-101 Memphis lead with 14.3 seconds left. Dallas put the ball in the hands of Nowitzki, who made a shot from the foul line with 3.1 ticks remaining to give the Mavericks the lead. But Randolph worked his magic following a timeout. Conley passed the ball to Randolph in the left corner, and he drained a contested 17-foot jumper with 0.3 seconds left for a 104-103 edge. Terry was way off the mark with a 34-footer as time expiredd.dddddddddddd Coach drew up the play up for me to come out to the corner and Mike (Conley) got me the ball and I got a good rhythm bounce and got the shot off, Randolph said. Dallas dominated the first half, shooting 51.2 percent from the field to build a 55-38 margin. The Mavericks led by as many as 18 in the half. But Memphis started its comeback with a 41-point third quarter. Down by 15, 59-44, early in the frame, the Grizzlies went on a 16-4 run to get right back in the game. Randolph capped the burst with a layup to make it 63-60 with 5:41 to go. The visitors then took the lead late in the period, as Gasol made two free throws to give the Grizzlies a 79-78 lead heading to the fourth. It marked the first time since January 29 that Dallas trailed after three quarters. The whole game is the third quarter, Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. You give up 41 points, turn it over six times, and basically dont take the challenge -- you get what you deserve. Thats really the bottom line. GAME NOTES:Memphis took three of four from Dallas this season...The Mavericks were without Tyson Chandler (sprained right ankle)...Dallas went 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies went 3-of-15 from three-point range...Battier and Mayo each had 11 points off the bench...Rodrigue Beaubois had 15 points for Dallas, which shot 50.7 percent from the field. Despite suffering their first regulation loss of the season, the San Jose Sharks continue as the top-ranked team in the TSN.ca NHL Power Rankings, ahead of the Colorado Avalanche and St. Louis Blues, two teams that also have just one regulation loss. Moving up this week, the Tampa Bay Lightning have won five of six, good enough to jump from 12 to five. The Minnesota Wild have won three straight and climbed into the Top 10, going from 13 to nine, and the Los Angeles Kings continued their shootout acumen, moving to 4-0 after 65 minutes of play, but two losses in the last nine games has helped them go from 18 to 14. Three wins in the last four games helped lift the Columbus Blue Jackets from 22 to 17. Heading the other way, the Pittsburgh Penguins fell, from two to 11, after they were outscored 9-4 in three straight losses, while injuries and a couple of losses contributed to the Anaheim Ducks going from six to 15. Goaltending injuries contribted to both the Nashville Predators and Carolina Hurricanes falling, Nashville from 15 to 21 and Carolina from 19 to 24. Among Canadian teams, the Toronto Maple Leafs are highest-ranked, up from 10 to six, remaining one spot ahead of the Vancouver Canucks, up from 11 to seven. The Calgary Flames continue to surprise, up from 14 to 12, and the Montreal Canadiens, beaten down by injuries, fell from nine to 13. Despite uneven progress, the Ottawa Senators are up a couple of spots, to 19, as the Winnipeg Jets are up from 23 to 22. At the bottom, among Canadian clubs, the Edmonton Oilers are up from 26 to 25, but have an ever-growing list of injuries with which to contend. NEW YORK -- The Toronto Raptors are the only thing standing between the Brooklyn Nets and a perfect 2014. Patrick Patterson stole Deron Williams inbounds pass and made the go-ahead jumper with six seconds left, and the Raptors stopped a five-game winning streak by the Nets for the second time this month with a 104-103 victory Monday night. Toronto dropped Brooklyn to 10-2 in January and opened a 2 1/2-game lead in the Atlantic Division over the Nets, who would be on the doorstep of the division lead if they could solve their neighbours to the north. "These guys are chasing us but theyre putting it together. Theyre playing well," Raptors point guard Kyle Lowry said. "Were the only team that beat them in 2014. I mean, thats a tough team. They had the game and we made a play and we made a shot." Brooklyn had a three-point lead with 17 seconds left behind Paul Pierce in his best game with the Nets, but John Salmons scored on a drive with 12 seconds remaining before Brooklyn took its last timeout to move the ball into the frontcourt. Patterson stole the pass and fed Lowry, who got it back to Patterson for his jumper. Pierce was well off on a final attempt. "We knew they didnt have any timeouts. We guessed right and Patrick looked like Richard Sherman out there with that steal," Lowry said, referring to the Seattle Seahawks defensive back who attended the game with a number of his teammates. Lowry finished with 31 points and seven assists for the Raptors, who clinched a winning record in consecutive months for the first time since December 2009 and January 2010. Pierce scored 33 points, making seven three-pointers in a strong bounce-back performance after going just 2 for 10 in his emotional return to Boston on Sunday. He had the Nets in position to win after scoring their last nine points before Toronto stole it. "Last night was a tough game to play in, so many emotions," Pierce said. "It was good to just get some normalcy back today and I felt comfortable, relaxed. But it wouldve been better if we got the win today, though." The stunning turnaround deflated the crowd at Barclays Center for a back-and-forth game that drew a visit from several Seahawks, who will hold their Super Bowl media day Tuesday at the Nets last home, the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sherman and Bobby Wagner grabbed a baseline seat in the first half, while Russell Wilson and other players sat above in a private box. Jonas Valanciunas had 20 points and 13 rebounds for the Raptors, who played without injured leading scorer DeMar DeRozan. Terrence Ross, who tied a franchise record with 51 points and made 10 3-pointers Saturday, had a quiet 10 points on 3-of-9 shooting. But Toronto got a big boost from Patterson, who ditched the mask he began the game with for a recent broken nose and finished with 15 points off the bench. "This is all about our toughness, our resiliency," Patterson said, "no matter whos out there during the course of the game, no matter whos not playing." Andray Blatche scored 20 points for the Nets, who lost 96-80 in Toronto on Jan. 11, a night after they played two overtimes in a victory over Miami. Lowry scored six straight points before Amir Johnson made a pair of free throws during an 8-0 run that gave Toronto a 94-85 lead with about eight minutes to play. The Nets answered with nine in a row to tie it on Alan Andersons jumper, and after Valanciunas basket, Pierce nailed consecutive three-pointers to make it 100-96 with 2:37 remaining. "Paul played well," teammate Kevin Garnett said. "He totally carried us for that fourth quarter, that second half, and we all came in and just said at the end of the game weve got to make plays, weve got to close games out and tonight we didnt do that." Toronto cut it to one and had a chance for the lead when Lowry stole Williams pass intended for Pierce, but Williams redeemed himself by drawing an offensive foul on Lowry with 19 seconds left. Pierce then made two free throws, but the Nets couldnt overcome Williams next giveaway. "Two turnovers in the last minute of the game, its not what I typically do, but thats how it goes sometimes," Williams said. There were eight lead changes in an entertaining second quarter, two in the final 1.3 seconds. Andersons three-pointer put the Nets up by two, but Lowry beat the buzzer from beyond halfcourt to give Toronto a 57-56 halftime lead. NOTES: DeRozan had made 125 consecutive starts. ... No matter what, they can always count on David West. With the top-seeded Pacers poised for an early summer, West fearlessly led a 16-4 run to end the game, extending the season with a 95-88 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday night. "Hes our rock," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said. "Theres no other way to put it." Trailing 3-2 after losing at home for the second time in the best-of-seven series, Indiana was in big trouble when the Hawks pushed out to an 84-79 lead with just over 3 minutes remaining, cheered on by a raucous crowd that barely sat down in the second half. But, for the fourth time in this back-and-forth affair, the road team won. West seemed to make every big play down the stretch, scoring four straight points and forcing a huge turnover to begin the turnaround. He hit two more baskets in the final minute to wrap things up, finishing with 24 points. Game 7 is Saturday in Indianapolis. "When a team is making runs like that, an eight seed trying to knock off a one seed in their building and the place is erupting on every play, we have a guy with the composure to settle everyone down," Vogel said. Paul George also scored 24 points for the Pacers, making four straight free throws to help fend off a team that was trying to become only the sixth No. 8 seed to win a playoff series. The Pacers went with a smaller-than-usual lineup much of the game, hoping to match up better with Atlanta spreading the court and shooting a bunch of 3-pointers. Roy Hibbert remained the starting centre, but played only about 12 minutes for the second game in a row. Ian Mahinmi played nearly twice as long, giving Indiana more mobility in the lane, while C.J. Watson and Chris Copeland also got extensive minutes. It worked. Atlanta bogged down offensively and made only 9-of-35 from beyond the arc. "We tried some different lineups," West said. "Coach rolled the dice." West came up big all over the court, also leading the Pacers with 11 rebounds and six assists, not to mention a couple of steals. "I told the guys, If worse comes to worse, weve got to play park baskeetball," he said.dddddddddddd Atlanta, playing perhaps its biggest home playoff game since the 1980s, looked as if it was on the verge of a huge celebration when the defence sagged and Jeff Teague knocked down a jumper with 3:16 to go. But, led by West, the Pacers showed some of the resolve theyve lacked in a late-season swoon. After swishing a pair of free throws, he hustled back to swat the ball away from Atlantas Pero Antic. Making sure Indiana took advantage of the turnover, West calmly made a jumper from the top of the key. Paul Millsap missed at the other end, and George Hill burst into the lane to drop one in. Just like that, the Pacers were back up 85-84 with 1:58 remaining. Antic tied it for the final time, 85-all, on a free throw with 1:24 remaining. But that was it for the Hawks. West hit another jumper to put the Pacers ahead for good. Then, coming off a timeout, Lou Williams drove under the basket and tried to throw an outlet pass to Teague; instead, the ball went right to George. He was immediately fouled, made both free throws, and Teague missed again for the Hawks after a brilliant night to seal it for the Pacers. Teague scored 29 points, nearly pulling out a victory on a night when Atlanta shot just under 36 per cent. "Nobodys going to lay down and just allow their season to be over with," Williams said. "Especially with the type of basketball team that they are. I think they just did a great job of just fighting at that three-minute mark and made the plays that we didnt." The bruising series nearly turned ugly near the end of the first half. Scott doled out an elbow to Hill, and the Pacers guard responded with a shove. The refs jumped in quickly and no punches were thrown. After initially calling a foul on Hill, the officials got together and changed it to Scott. The crowd booed lustily, but it appeared to be the correct call. Replays appeared to show a couple of Indiana players stepping beyond the bench area, but they didnt get involved and Vogel said he didnt expect any discipline from the league for Game 7. Notes: Millsap and Williams were the only other Atlanta players in double figures, both with 16 points. ... Lance Stephenson scored 21 points for the Pacers. ... Millsap had 18 rebounds. ' ' '

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Marcus Paige and his North Carolina teammates have endured so many wild swings -- big wins, surprising losses, NCAA drama -- that no one can blame their Hall of Fame coach for wondering whats next. And yet, a month after sitting at 0-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Tar Heels are surging after a rousing comeback against their fiercest rival that had their fans rushing to midcourt to celebrate when it was over. Paige scored all 13 of his points in the second half, including two big baskets in the final 2 1/2 minutes, to help UNC beat No. 5 Duke 74-66 on Thursday night for their eighth straight win. Senior Leslie McDonald added a season-high 21 points for the Tar Heels (19-7, 9-4 ACC), who rallied from 11 points down in the second half to beat the Blue Devils (21-6, 10-4) in a rivalry game postponed more than a week by a winter storm. It was by far North Carolinas most impressive win during its run. Before Thursday, most had come against teams standing sixth or lower in the ACC standings. "Im not going to say were a finished product because weve got games left," Paige said, "but man, were playing really well right now and were winning games in a lot of different ways." It marked UNCs third win against a top-five team this season, along then-No. 1 Michigan State and then-No. 3 Louisville. Throw in then-No. 11 Kentucky in December, and the Tar Heels have beaten the top four teams from The Associated Press preseason Top 25. Not bad for a team that never had top player P.J. Hairston due to NCAA violations for improper benefits. "It was a bunch of guys that fought really hard," coach Roy Williams said, "and I couldnt be prouder of my team than I am right now." After filling the entire court after the horn, thousands of fans mobbed Franklin Street on the north end of campus to continue a celebration that came eight days later than they had hoped due to last weeks winter storm. The storm brought enough snow and ice to paralyze area roads and kept Dukes bus from even making it to Durham to pick up the team for the 11-mile drive to the Smith Center in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels made it worth the wait for their fans by being tough enough to wrestle control from the Blue Devils. They shot 50 per cent from the field after halftime and even made their last 10 free throws after a disastrous start at the line. Jabari Parker and Quinn Cook both scored 17 points for Duke, which led 51-40 with about 15 minutes left before going ice cold from the field. The Blue Devils missed 13 straight shots and went scoreless for 6 minutes at one point, helping the Tar Heels climb back in it by mixing a 1-3-1 zone with man defence. "They would just keep switching," Cook said. "Wed come down, and we wouldnt know what theyd be in. They kept us on our toes with their defence." Duke shot 36 per cent (11 for 31) after halftime and made 5 of 22 3-pointers for the game, Coach Mike Krzyzewski said he thought his team "played young" in the second half. "We looked tired or we didnt have life," Krzyzewski said. "And no matter what we did in a timeout, we just didnt have that spark -- the anger, the emotion, the thing you have to have to match what their crowd, their team is doing. You have to try to counter that. And I just felt we were, we didnt have the life that you needed to have." Paige provided plenty of that fight for the Tar Heels. After being hounded by Duke defenders Cook and Rasheed Sulaimon through his scoreless first half, he scored nine points in the final 5 1/2 minutes starting with his only 3-pointer of the night. McDonald hit the go-ahead jumper to make it 62-60 with 3:54 left, capping his own strong performance after two straight 1-for-8 shooting performances. Paige followed with a stepback jumper over Rodney Hood with 2:11 left, then answered Parkers free throws by driving for a scooping layup through the heart of Dukes defence. After Sulaimon missed a 3 on the ensuing possession, freshman Nate Britt followed with two free throws that pushed the lead to 68-62 with 46.2 seconds left and soon had the rowdy home crowd inching closer to the court. It marked the 11th time Paige has scored in double figures in the second half this season after scoring four or fewer in the first. The postponement created a four-games-in-eight-days stretch for both teams, though its particularly challenging for Duke with No. 1 Syracuse visiting Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night in a rematch of the overtime classic won by the Orange earlier this month. PETERSBURG, Florida – Gareth Morgan sat in the dugout before Tuesday afternoons sun-soaked Baseball Canada Junior Teams tilt against the Blue Jays, visualizing what was to come both in the short term and in the future. "Its pretty cool and humbling," said Morgan. "Its an honour to be a part of this team and get an opportunity to do this. Its not everyday you get to put your uniform on and play against big leaguers." Morgan, who turns 18 next month, is a presence at 64", 220 pounds. He is the top-ranked Canadian heading into Junes amateur draft. Some projections have the product of Torontos Vaughn Road Academy going in the first round. An outfielder, he possesses all the tools over which scouts salivate. "Hes a high school player so sometimes I think the expectation is unrealistic given the skill set," said head coach Greg Hamilton. "He has tremendous talent. Hes got everything youre looking for. Hes got size. Hes got power. Hes got speed for a big man. Hes got a plus arm. Its a complete package. Its a major league right fielder in the making if everything falls into place and he stays healthy, obviously." Morgan grew up splitting his summers and winters between baseball and hockey. Three years ago, his first in high school, Morgan made a choice. He would commit to playing baseball full-time and, having already gone through a growth spurt, was showing signs of the imposing figure hes become. Fast forward three years, through all the games and the tournaments and the travel with the junior team, and he feels like he belongs. "I feel like Ive come a long way both mentally and physically," said Morgan. "I was a lot smaller back then and my skills werent as good. On the mental side, Ive gained more confidence and I just feel more comfortable with what Im doing." He recently spent a week visiting Larry Walker in West Palm Beach, Florida. They hit, shagged flies, worked out and talked the tools of the trade. It was an opportunity to pick the brain of a former great about life in the big leagues. "It was awesome," said Morgan. "We hung out, went kayaking, played a little baseball, hit with the Cardinals." Theres a big decision looming on the horizon. As he awaits the June draft, Morgan also has a scholarship offer from North Carolina State University. Hell have to weigh the value of signing with the pro club that selects him versus a free education at a strong ACC school. "It crosses your mind sometimes, of course youre going to think about it, but the less you think about it the better it is," said Morgan. "Just go out and play the game you love and have fun with it." "We try to give them the information thats objective so that they know all the opportunities available to them and then they qualify what resonates to them the most," said Hamilton. "As long as they understand what a Division I scholarship means and what that experience means; what signing out of high school and minor league baseball and the challenges that come with that mean, the day to day grind that theyre going to go through means to them on a personal level and where they are physically and mentally, I think if theyve got the comparables in front of them, everythings in order, then it becomes a personal decision. We try to convince them its not always about dollars." Morgan cites Brett Lawrie as his favourite ballplayer. The two shared the same field together on Tuesday.dddddddddddd A few years from now, it could happen again. ONYSHKO GRINDS IT OUT Left-hander Ben Onyshko, a 17-year-old from Winnipeg, admitted to being nervous in the first inning. He walked the first two hitters he faced, Munenori Kawasaki and Colby Rasmus, almost hitting Kawasaki twice. Brett Lawrie followed with a single, loading the bases with nobody out for Jose Bautista. "I mean, I tried not to think about it," said Onyshko. "I tried to just execute pitches the same as always but Ive got to admit, my mind was racing a little bit. It was surreal." Bautista flew out to deep left centerfield for a sacrifice fly. "I was scared for a split second when he hit the ball," said Onyshko. "Once I was able to get that first out I think things started to roll a little bit better. I settled in." He certainly did settle in. Onyshko limited the Jays to that one run in the first and allowed two runs over his three innings of work. Onyshkos curveball caught the attention of onlookers. Its a pitch he started throwing when he was 12. "I just remember hanging in the backyard with my dad, just working on it, throwing it," said Onyshko. "He would sit there catching bullpens for me every couple of days." LAWRIE HAS FLASHBACKS It wasnt too long ago Brett Lawrie was playing for the Baseball Canada junior team in games like Tuesdays. "Its a lot of fun for me," said Lawrie. "Especially nowadays because theres a lot more guys coaching that Ive played with and had a chance to play with that are across the other way now. Its good to see those guys coming back and helping the young guys. It sets a good example for all them because the guys I played with were the good players and theyre fun to play with so things are probably pretty light in the clubhouse, which is cool." Lawrie and his Blue Jays teammates did most of the talking as they mingled with the young Canadians before the game. "I think its kind of keep your ears open, more or less," said Lawrie. "Theyre a little nervous, which I anticipated so I think, more or less, they just kept their ears open, listened to how the boys talked and just taking it all in." HAMILTON APPRECIATES BLUE JAYS APPROACH Brandon Morrow started for the Blue Jays. Baseball Canada alum Brett Lawrie, Jose Bautista, Colby Rasmus, Adam Lind and Dioner Navarro were in Torontos starting lineup on Tuesday. Head coach Greg Hamilton appreciated the Jays willingness to send some of the clubs top stars to the game. The rest of the roster was in Lakeland for a game against the Tigers. "Its a special day and an opportunity to come out on the field and play against the players that you watch on TV and aspire to be like is incredibly special," said Hamilton. Fans will follow the paths of these young players. Visit www.baseball.ca to learn more about the program. "Every player that weve got has a chance to play beyond high school," said Hamilton. "At minimum theyre going to go on scholarships and play collegiate baseball. You never know. You extend your playing career and you figure a few things out and there are some here today you think will be for sure potential major league prospects and there are others who will sneak up on you too just by having the opportunity to continue to play." Following James Neals knee on Brad Marchand and Shawn Thorntons slew foot and punches to Brooks Orpik in the first period of the Pittsburgh Penguins-Boston Bruins game on Saturday, TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie weighed in on the two incidents on Twitter. "Im no rocket surgeon but have to think Shawn Thornton will get in-person hearing for knocking down Brooks Orpik and KOing him while down. Id also imagine NHL [Department of] Player Safety will be looking hard at James Neals knee to head of Brad Marchand for possible supplementary discipline." McKenzie also addressed Orpiks initial hit on Loui Eriksson and his refusal to fight Thornton that precipitated the two incidents to follow. "Orpiks hit on Eriksson was hockey play, couldve been minor for interference, but well within context of game action. Orpik shouldnt necessarily be obliged to answer the bell to Thornton on that hit. It wasnt that egregious." McKenzie believes Thornton will have a tough time explaining his actions. "Thornton will have no defence for taking down Orpik and even less for punching him while he was down and not prepared to defend himself. As for Neal, there could be more room for a benefit of the doubt based on actual intent. "Neal on Marchand may or may not have been sneaky dirty or accidentally on purpose, but thats for NHL Player Safety to determine. McKenzie also gave a final assessment on both. "[My] guess is Thornton and Neal will both get suspended with Thornton somewhere between six games and double digits. Neals number of games may hinge on Marchands status. Marchand did not leave the game. Wholesale NFL Jerseys . PHILADELPHIA -- The Milwaukee Brewers used a big offence on their way to an undefeated road trip. Carlos Gomez had three hits with an RBI and the Brewers extended their winning to six games with a 6-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night. The Brewers wins have all come on the road during the streak. They came to Philadelphia following a three-game sweep at defending World Series champion Boston. "It sure was (impressive)," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said of the trip. "Great pitching, some big hits, bullpens doing a great job. Everythings working. Guys are getting some big hits right now." They battered the Phillies with 25 runs and 38 hits in the three-game sweep. Milwaukee has batted .320 and has outscored opponents 42-18 during the streak. "Were scoring some early and then getting to those late innings and adding on," Roenicke said. Ryan Braun had two hits and an RBI, ending the series 6 for 12 with 10 RBIs while increasing his lifetime total to 24 RBIs in 21 games at Citizens Bank Park. Braun opened the series by homering three times in Tuesdays 10-4 win. Khris Davis had two hits and two RBIs for the Brewers, who return home to host Pittsburgh on Friday night. Milwaukees 6-0 road start is its best since starting the 1987 season 7-0. "It was kind of a whole team effort on this trip and were excited to keep it going," said Jonathan Lucroy, who doubled. Marco Estrada (1-0) allowed two runs and five hits in six innings, striking out six and walking two, to earn the victory. "Not only with our pitching, but with our offence, it was well played overall," Estrada said. "Its the way you want to do it, were hitting, were pitching, its the way we just have to keep doing it. Obviously, its tougher on the road to do, but we did it. It just shows what kind of team we are. Were a pretty good team." Marlon Byrd homered and had two RBIs for the Phillies, who lost their fourth straight. "The good news is they are leaving town," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "Now we have to concentrate on gaining some momentum starting (Friday)." Philadelphias Chase Utley had two hits after returning from a two-game absence because of the flu. Utley batted .458 with two homers and six RBIs in his first six games prior to the illness. Cliff Lee (2-1) struck out eight and walked none, but he also allowed eight hits that resulted in three runs in six innings. Lee has allowed 29 hits in three games. "Theyre a good hitting team and they showed it in the whole series," Lee said. "They flat-out beat us." Byrds shot to left in the second put Philadelphia ahead 1-0. The Brewers took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth on Aramis Ramirezs RBI double and Davis RBI single. Milwaukee added a run in the sixth on Davis two-out RBI double. Philadelphia responded with a two-out run in the bottom of the sixth when Byrd beat out a chopper to third with the bases loaded. Estrada then got Domonic Brown to fly out to centre to end the bases-loaded threat. Milwaukee added three runs in the seventh. The Brewers got some help when Carlos Ruiz elected to throw to second on pinch-hitter Logan Schafers sacrifice bunt intended to move Rickie Weeks to second. Ruizs throw pulled shortstop Jimmy Rollins off the bag and put runners on first and second with no outs to set up the big inning. Defensive miscues have been a problem all season for Philadelphia, which entered with nine errors in eight games and several plays, such as Ruizs, that havent been ruled errors but have been costly miscues. Gomez singled home Weeks, Jean Segura drove in Estrada and Brauns sacrifice fly scored Gomez. All three runs were charged to righty reliever Jeff Manship, who faced three batters without recording an out. Milwaukee extended its club record of consecutive innings with a hit to 22 innings when Braun singled to right with two outs in the first. Lee retired the Brewers in order in the second, striking out the side, to end the streak. Brown made an excellent diving catch to take a hit away from Scooter Gennett in the ninth. It was the third diving catch off the bat of Gennett in two games. Notes: The victory gave Milwaukee its first sweep of the Phillies in Philadelphia. ... For the Atlanta Braves, it was another night of missed chances. Matt Carpenters two-run double that helped carry St. Louis past the slumping Braves, who shook up their lineup but still lost their seventh in a row, 4-3 on Monday. The Cardinals scored three runs in the fifth inning, taking advantage of shaky defence by Atlantas Gold Glove shortstop. In fact, Simmons had a couple of plays that couldve been scored errors but were initially ruled hits. The second one was changed to an E-6 and turned out to be especially costly, leading to a pair of unearned runs. St. Louis built a 4-0 lead and barely held on to win the series opener. "It was big," Carpenter said. "Especially when we got out to a big lead, to be able to hold them off, that was big for us." Desperate for more offence, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez batted pitcher Aaron Harang eighth and put second baseman Ramiro Pena in the ninth spot. Pena had two hits, including a seventh-inning homer that brought the Braves within a run, but they couldnt overcome a 4-0 deficit. Juston Upton took a called third strike from Trevor Rosenthal to end the game with the potential tying run at second base -- Uptons fourth strikeout of the night and extending Atlantas woes with runners in scoring position. The Braves were 1 for 12 in those situations and are 6 of 51 during their losing streak, though Freddie Freeman saw some encouraging signs. "We hit some balls hard with runners on," he said. "We were in the game the whole game. We couldnt say that the past week." The last time the Braves had such a lengthy skid was May 21-28, 2012, when they dropped eight in a row. Their longest losing streak last season was four straight. Shelby Miller (4-2) got a shaky win, giving up six hits and two runs in five-plus innings. Trevor Rosenthal pitched out of trouble for his ninth save, giving up a leadoff single to Simmons. Jordan Schafer bunted the runner to second, but Pena flied out to right before Upton whiffed. Harang (3-3) took the loss, though he pitched much betteer than his previous start, when he was pounded for nine runs by the Marlins.ddddddddddddThis time, he gave up four runs in six innings but only two were earned. The game was scoreless until the fifth, when Peter Bourjos led off with a single before Mark Ellis grounded one off Simmons glove. The shortstop, looking to make a force at second, appeared to take his eyes off the ball as it skipped past him. After Miller bunted the runners to second and third, Carpenter doubled to right-centre to bring them both in. Matt Holiday followed with a hard liner past third baseman Chris Johnson to make it 3-0. "Those things happen," Harang said of Simmons error. "I told him not to be too hard on himself. Hes probably going to save my butt plenty of times this year." St. Louis added another run in the fifth on Bourjos RBI single, but Gonzalez challenged a call at third base that had seemingly given the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Yadier Molinas bases-loaded grounder ricocheted off Harangs leg, right to Johnson at third. He caught it and blindly stepped back in search of the bag and managed to barely nick it, as the replay showed. The called was quickly overturned after a review of only 37 seconds. The Braves knocked out Miller in the bottom half of the sixth, the first three hitters reaching safely. The Cardinals went to the bullpen after Evan Gattis RBI single, and B.J. Upton followed with a sacrifice fly off Pat Neshek. Neshek escaped the jam by striking out Simmons. NOTES: The Cardinals sent pitcher RHP Joe Kelly back to St. Louis to continue his rehab from a strained left hamstring. "Joe just wasnt to the point where they thought they could push him, so keeping him around the rest of this road trip didnt make any sense," general manager John Mozeliak said. "I dont know Id call it a setback as much as he just wasnt progressing as quickly as we wanted." ... Atlanta RHP Gavin Floyd will make his season debut when he starts Tuesday against LHP Tyler Lyons (0-2) of the Cardinals. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Vincent Lecavaliers sore back is getting better. So is his self-confidence. Lecavalier capped a topsy-turvy finish by scoring with 15 seconds left, sending the Philadelphia Flyers to a 4-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. It was his first goal since Nov. 27, a 22-game span that included nine games he missed with a back injury. "It felt good. Theyve been hard to come by since I got back from my injury," Lecavalier said. "Sometimes a goal like that will kind of, I dont want to say jumpstart, but get more confidence and keep going." The goal came during a scramble in the Sabres end and after Lecavalier missed on two other chances in the final 2-plus minutes. After his initial shot just missed the net, teammate Matt Read dug out a loose puck to the left of the Buffalo net and fed Lecavalier, who one-timed a shot from the left circle. The goal capped a furious finish in which the teams traded leads twice by combining to score four times in the final 6:32. Scott Hartnell had a goal and two assists, while Brayden Schenn and Jakub Voracek also scored in helping Philadelphia snap a two-game skid. Wayne Simmonds had two assists for the Flyers (24-19-4), who improved to 8-3 in their past 11 games. It was a game in which the Flyers twice rallied from one-goal deficits, and won for the eighth time this season when trailing in the third period. "Never give up, thats probably the biggest thing," said Hartnell, who has five goals and eight assists in his past 13 games. "We showed a lot of character, especially late there coming back." The Sabres, by comparison, wilted in what proved to be yet another reflection of why the young and patchwork teams NHL-worst record dropped to 13-27-5. Cody Hodgson and Matt DAgostini each had a goal and assist for Buffalo, which had an eight-game home point streak snapped at 6-0-2. Tyler Ennis also scored and Steve Ott set up two for the Sabres. "Missed assignments, not determined enough to battle for the puck, spinning and turning off hits, not getting an inch in the lanes, all of the above," interim coach Ted Nolan said, assessing what went wrong. "We just didnt do what we were supposed to do at the end." Nolan could add undisciplined penalties to the list. The Flyers converted two of six power-play chances, including Hartnells goal that put Philadelphia ahead 3-2 with Buffalos Zenon Konopka off for goalie interference. The Sabres squandered a rare offensive outburst, and blew a chance to win consecutive games for only the third time this season. Buffalo managed three goals in regulation for the first time in 10 games and only the ninth time this season. Buffalo also wasted what was a solid outing by backup goalie Jhonas Enroth, who stopped 29 shots but got little help in front on all four Flyers goals. That included Lecavaliers goal, during which a Sabres defender pushed a Flyers player into Enroth. Enroth did make a highlight-reel save on Claude Giroux 12 minutes into the first period, when he dived to his right and punched his glove out to stop the shot. The goalie also robbed Lecavalier with 2:23 left, when the forwards centring pass from a bad angle struck Sabres defenceman Mike Weber in front. The puck fluttered toward the net before Enroth dropped his stick and managed to smother it in the crease. "Were doing what we think is best to develop our players," LaFontaine said. "I really believe under all the circumstances, that (Quebec City) is the best place for him." ... JOHNS, N.PHILADELPHIA -- All Ryan Braun needed to shake his slump was a trip to Philadelphia. Braun hit three home runs and tied a franchise record with seven RBIs to lead the Milwaukee Brewers to a 10-4 victory Tuesday, spoiling the Phillies home opener. Braun connected twice off Kyle Kendrick (0-1), snapping the longest homerless drought of his career. The 2011 NL MVP came in with only three singles in 20 at-bats this season. But Braun, who is bothered by a right thumb injury, felt just fine -- as usual -- in Philadelphia. He has 10 homers and 21 RBIs in 20 career games at Citizens Bank Park. "Its a good ballpark to hit in," Braun said. "And, I enjoy competing against Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley and Ryan Howard." Coming off a three-game sweep of the World Series champion Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, the Brewers won their fourth straight game and improved to 5-2. Kyle Lohse (1-1) allowed three runs and seven hits in five innings, walking five. Braun was booed in his first game in Philly since serving a 65-game suspension for violations of Major League Baseballs drug agreement and labour contract. He also got an earful last week in Boston. It didnt bother him. "Its very motivating," Braun said. "Its nothing new for me." He hit a three-run shot to left in the third to put the Brewers up 4-1, ending his streak of 98 plate appearances without a homer. He hadnt hit one since May 22, 2013, against the Dodgers. Brauns solo homer in the fourth made it 6-1. He then launched a three-run drive off Brad Lincoln in the eighth. "Hes a special player," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said. "Theres no better way to silence the crowd." Braun also turned in a defensive gem. He saved two runs with a diving catch on Carlos Ruizs sinking liner to right to end the second inning. "That was a big play," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It changed the momentum." The game was scheduled for Monday afternoon, but was postponed Sunday because of a rainy foreecast.dddddddddddd It was sunny and 62 degrees at first pitch, but windy enough to cancel the Navy parachuters who deliver ceremonial baseballs. Former Phillies pitcher Jamie Moyer, now a broadcaster, threw out the first pitch. It was brought to him by his boyhood idol, Hall of Famer pitcher Steve Carlton. The Phillies couldve used them on the mound against the Brewers. "We didnt have an answer for Braun," Sandberg said. Kendrick allowed six runs -- four earned -- and nine hits in five innings. Jimmy Rollins had an RBI double in the fourth and an RBI single in the sixth to get the Phillies to 6-4. Five-time All-Star second baseman Chase Utley wasnt at the ballpark because of the flu. He was replaced in Philadelphias lineup by rookie Cesar Hernandez. A sellout crowd of 45,061 enjoyed the pregame festivities that included the traditional mini-parade that leads players into the ballpark from the street behind the stands in left-centre field. RENTON, Wash. -- Seattle Seahawks left tackle Russell Okung has returned to practice in limited fashion with coach Pete Carroll saying Okung is one or two weeks away. LAKE LOUISE, Alta. -- American Lindsey Vonn will make her long-awaited World Cup skiing debut Friday. The reigning Olympic womens downhill champion hasnt competed since tearing ligaments in her right knee and breaking a bone in her leg at the world championships in February. She skipped Thursdays training run but the American ski star said via Twitter she intended to make her return to racing here. "Ive decided to take today as a "rest day" but I will be racing tomorrow," Vonn said. "I cant wait for my first race." Downhill races are scheduled for Friday and Saturday followed by Sundays super-G. Germanys Maria Hoefl-Riesch was the fastest in training Thursday with a time of one minute 56.52 seconds. Norways Lotte Smiseth Sejersted was second, followed by Austrian Anna Fenninger. Larisa Yurkiw of Owen Sound, Ont., is the lone Canadian in the downhill and was 23rd. Vonn has won a record 14 World Cup races at Lake Louise, which has earned the nickname "Lake Lindsey" because of her dominance. She swept all three races the last two years. But the 29-year-old arrived at the Alberta resort with questions surrounding her knee. She partially tore one of the surgically-reconstructed ligaments while training in Copper Mountain, Colo., two weeks ago. Vonn didnt compete in the first downhill of the season last weekend in Beaver Creek, Colo. Vonn was 22nd in the first training run Wednesday. "You know if your body is ready or not and I know that mine is ready," she said in a statement posted on the U.S. Ski Federation website. "Normally this is the first downhill of the year, so for me this feels like a normal beginning of the season. It feels pretty awesome. "My goal (Wednesday) was to ski solid and to ski my race line and I did that. I knew that if I could accomplish all those things in one run, then I dont need a second run. Its the smart choice for me to not ski today in order to prepare for (Friday)." Vonn is a four-time overall World Cup champion. Evans blasted in a hard shot late in the 28th minute on Wednesday night, and Eddie Johnson added an insurance goal during second-half stoppage time to give the Seattle Sounders a 2-0 victory over the Colorado Rapids in the MLS Western Conference knockout playoff game on Wednesday night. The No. 4 seeded Sounders (16-12-7) limped into the post-season on a seven-game winless streak, but advanced to face the No. 1 Portland Timbers in the two-leg, aggregate-goals West semifinals. The first game will be Saturday in Seattle. The No. 5-seeded Rapids finished the season 14-12-9. Colorado lost its last four road games of the year, all by shutout. Evans got his scoring chance when Colorados German Mera headed a cross out of the penalty area. Evans settled it at the top right of the box, took two dribbles in and ripped a hard shot to the back left corner. It was his fifth goal of the season and his second career playoff goal. "It was just the right place at the right time," Evans said. "In some cases, I tend to over-run things a little bit. But this time, I kind of held back and put the brakes on and waited for the play to develop a little bit. Thats why I was able to get in a good position and get a good touch and a good strike on goal." Evans previous post-season goal came in 2008 when he and Sounders coach Sigi Schmid helped Columbus win the MLS Cup before both migrated to the then-expansion Sounders in 2009. Johnson sealed it midway through the third of five minutes of stoppage time when he deked around Mera and beat Colorado goalkeeper Clint Irwin to the back left corner for his 10th goal of the year. The Sounders played the final three minutes of regulation and five minutes of stoppage time a man down after goalkeeper Michael Gspurning was red-carded for handling the ball outside the penalty area.dddddddddddd Colorados Drew Moor had sent a long ball toward the box, and Gspurning was at least a yard outside when he reached out and caught it. "He wanted to come out and head the ball, and realized it bounced too high for him to head it," Schmid said. "He thought he had jumped back into the box, then caught the ball outside the box. The referee (Silviu Petrescu) decided it was a red card." Gspurning, facing a one-game suspension, will be replaced by former U.S. national team and English Premier League star Marcus Hahnemann for Saturdays first leg against Portland. Hahnemann played the final few minutes Wednesday. Seattle had not won since a 2-0 shutout against Real Salt Lake in Seattle on Sept. 13, going 0-4-3 in its final seven regular-season games. "For us to win a game is just a good feeling," Schmid said. "Its a win over a team that embarrassed us last time (5-1 in Colorado on Oct. 5). Its not just a win, its the way we played. I thought we played well. Its not where we were hanging on and scrapping to get by. From that standpoint, it means a little more than just a win." Colorados best chance came late in the 57th minute when Deshorn Brown sent a shot from just inside the box on the left side curling toward the far post. Gspurning came out to knock it away and preserve the shutout. "It was disappointing, but Im certainly proud of the boys for leaving it all out on the field," Moor said. "I wish we would have started off a little brighter. (It was) a playoff game -- its different. MINSK, Belarus -- Viktor Tikhonov scored twice and Alex Ovechkin added a goal and two assists Monday as Russia routed the United States 6-1 for its third straight victory at the ice hockey world championships. Nikolai Kolyomin opened the scoring for Russia and Alex Ovechkin beat veteran goaltender Tim Thomas with backhand on a penalty shot in the first period for his third goal of the tournament. Ovechkin set up both of Tikhonovs goals in the second, with Yevgeni Kuznetsov and Sergei Plotnikov also scoring for Russia. Justin Abdelkader pulled one back for the U.S. to make it 3-1. Russia leads Group G with nine points from three games, while the U.S. has six. Earlier, France overcame Slovakia 5-3 for another upset victory and host Belarus stunned Switzerland 4-3. France followed up its upset win over Canada in its opening game by coming from 3-1 down to beat Slovakia. Damien Fleury scored the winner on a rebound with 3:41 left in regulation to complete the comeback. Antoine Roussel added his second goal into an empty net for Frances fifth. Baptiste Amar also scored twice for France. "I feel like our team has a lot of character," Roussel said. "We created our chances on the power play. We were so aggressive and we didnt take so many shots." Ladislav Nagy had two goals for Slovakia, with captain Miroslav Satan also scoring. France has five points from three games in Group A, while Slovakia remained on one. "Were not ready to give it up," Satan said. "The tournament is not over yet." Mikhail Grabovski netted the decisive goal with 2:06 remaining in the final period in Belarus second victory at the worlds to thrill 15,000 home fans at the Minsk Arena. "Im really proud of my boys," Belarus coach Glen Hanlon said. "The huge support that we have from our fans was likely the difference for us." Goals from Yannick Weber, Reto Schappi and Etienne Froidevaux had given Switzerland a 3-2 lead in the third but Belarus equalized through Sergei Kostitsys second goal. It was the third straight loss for Switzerland, last years runner-up. "Its a difficult situation for us right now we have to stay positive and look forward but it wont be easy," Switzerland coach Sean Simpson said. WACO, Texas -- Baylor quarterback Bryce Petty was able to smile even after talking about what an ugly game it was for the Bears offence. Maybe now people will start to believe the fifth-ranked Bears are really good. Theyre still undefeated after a 41-12 victory over 12th-ranked Oklahoma on Thursday night in their first big test of the season. "Were just talented, man. Were committed. I think thats all you can say about it," Petty said. "Its a very special team." Baylor (8-0, 5-0 Big 12) scored twice in the final minute before halftime and stretched its school-record winning streak to 12 games since a loss at Oklahoma last November. The Bears are 8-0 for the first time. Even though Baylor came in leading the nation in scoring (64 points per game) and total offence (718 yards per game) -- and was outscoring opponents by an average margin of 48 points -- many questioned how good the Bears were after getting into November without playing a ranked opponent. They have now, and they responded with an impressive victory against a team that used to routinely overwhelm them. And they did it without scoring a touchdown in the first quarter for the first time during their winning streak. "We didnt really feel like us the first quarter and a half of the game, but that has a lot to do with who youre playing," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "We were playing a team with good tradition, and tradition doesnt die easily." Petty threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more, and third-string running back Shock Linwood ran for 182 yards. Oklahoma (7-2, 4-2) has a 21-2 lead in the series, but both losses have come in its last two trips to Floyd Casey Stadium for prime-time games. "Everyone talks about their offence, which is really good," Sooners coach Bob Stoops said. "But I knew that their defence is really good with all the seniors that they have." Running backs Lache Seastrunk and Glasco Martin got banged up in the game, so Linwood ran 23 times. The Bears also were missing top receiver Tevin Reese, who was without a catch before dislocating his right wrist. He spent the second half on the sideline with his arm in a sling, and Briles said afterward he hopes Reese could be back for a bowl game. "To come out with the win even though it was ugly was good for us," Petty said. Baylor trailed 5-3 after a strange sequence that started at the end of the first quarter when the Bears were penalized 38 yards on one play, and had a players ejection overturned before he made a touchdown-saving play. After Petty scored on a 1-yard keeper with a minute to go in the first half, Oklahoma gave the ball right back when Blake Bell threw an interception right into the arms of linebacker Eddie Lackey at the Sooners 38. Petty ran 14 yards on third-and-10 before a double-pump throw to Antwan Goodley, whose Big 12-leading ninth TD catch was a spectacular grab with both arms fully extended. He held on for a 24-yard play that put the Bears up 24-5 at halftime. "I dont want to say we got tired, but you could tell that stuff was taking a toll on us because we kept going back out there. It showed in our play when we went back out there on the field," Sooners linebacker Frank Shannon said. "It was real frustrating, but were a team so weve got to put that behind us." Goodley made it 10 touchdown receptions he had a 25-yard catch with 9 minutes left in the game. He finished with six catches for 80 yards. Petty completed 13 of 26 passes for a season-low 204 yards. He ran 16 times for 45 yards. Bell finished 15-of-35 passing for 150 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Oklahoma had 237 total yards. The Bears are 5-0 at home against Top 25 teams since the start of the 2011 season. That includes a 45-38 win over the Sooners two years ago in a game that likely clinched the Heisman Trophy for Robert Griffin III, and 52-24 last November over Kansas State, which arrived in Waco as the No. 1 team in the BCS standings. Baylor got penalized 38 yards on one play late in the first quarter, including a targeting penalty and two flags for unsportsmanlike conduct, setting up Oklahoma at the 7. The Sooners failed to score when Bell was tackled for a 1-yard loss on fourth-and-goal from the 1 by cornerback K.J. Morton, who had been called for targeting only a few plays earlier. Morton was flagged after a vicious hit on Sterling Shepard that knocked the ball loose and laid out the receiver. Officials reviewed the play and determined it was a shoulder-to-shoulder hit, overturning Mortons ejection and keeping him in the game. But the penalty still stood, and there was extra yardage tacked on for the calls against cornerback Ahmad Dixon for unnecessary roughness and then taking his helmet off while on the field. "I was amped up at the beginning of the game," Dixon said. Two plays after Bell was stopped on fourth down, Petty was sacked in the end zone by Dominique Alexander for a safety. Jalen Saunders then returned the free kick 55 yards to the Baylor 12, though the Sooners had to settle for Michael Hunnicutts 22-yard field goal. Baylor went ahead to stay wen Petty ran 5 yards for a score to make it 10-5, a drive that started with Linwood gaining 20 yards on his first carry. Oklahoma finally got in the end zone when Bell threw a 10-yard TD pass to Roy Finch on a fourth-and-3 play with 3:20 left in the third quarter. Moores in his first year as the backup quarterback for the Dolphins, and theyre 0-4. Last year he was with the Carolina Panthers, who went 2-14. "It has been rough," Moore said. "But you dont have time to think about the past in this game." Thats especially true this week for Moore, who likely will make his first start with the Dolphins in their next game Oct. 17 at the New York Jets. No. 1 quarterback Chad Henne watched practice for the second day in a row Wednesday as the Dolphins awaited a final diagnosis on the severity of his left shoulder injury. After being hurt Sunday in a loss at San Diego, Henne expressed optimism he would quickly be back in the lineup. But the Dolphins havent ruled out the possibility hell require surgery and miss the rest of the season. "I think its a day-to-day thing with him," Moore said. "I hope everything will be all right, but we dont really know much right now." The Dolphins have been shopping for another quarterback to provide depth. In the meantime, Moore is taking all of the snaps with the first team in practice. "It has been good getting in there and getting a lot of much-needed work," he said. "I need the reps, and its good for everybody to get the reps with me as well. The only way to get on the same page with everybody is to practice with them." A fourth-year pro with 23 career starts, Moore acquitted himself well coming offf the bench in San Diego.dddddddddddd He went 17 for 26 for 167 yards and had several passes dropped. "There were some plays I wanted back," Moore said. "There were some good things Im happy about. Im disappointed we lost, but there were some bright spots." Undrafted out of Oregon State, Moore went 10-13 as a starter in three seasons with Carolina, including 1-4 last year. He signed as a free agent with Miami at the beginning of training camp. "One of the things that makes him attractive to me is that when the light goes on and you put Matt in the game, he tends to move your team pretty good," Dolphins coach Tony Sparano said. On his first play in San Diego, Moore threw a 31-yard completion. That turned out to be their longest gain of the game, and they completed the drive by scoring their only touchdown. It has been a sputtering unit with the much-maligned Henne, who has actually showed signs of improvement this season by throwing downfield more effectively. Even so, he ranks 24th in the league in passing efficiency and 28th in completion percentage. And now his injury complicates the challenge of getting the offence on track. "You always lose a beat, I think a little bit, when you lose your starting quarterback," receiver Brian Hartline said. With Miami one of the NFLs four winless teams, Moore knows the situation is far from ideal. "Its not what we want, but these guys are working, and were hungry," he said. Its likely no ones hungrier for a win that Moore. ' ' '

MIAMI -- Best player. Best game of his career. LeBron James clearly isnt ready to concede his MVP award to anyone yet. Dazzling from inside and out, James put on the best scoring show of his NBA life Monday night, pouring in 61 points -- a career high and franchise record -- as the Miami Heat beat the Charlotte Bobcats 124-107. It was the eighth straight win for the two-time defending champions, who are starting to roll as the playoffs get near. James made 22 of 33 shots from the field, including his first eight three-point attempts. "The man above has given me some unbelievable abilities to play the game of basketball," James said. "I just try to take advantage of it every night. I got the trust of my teammates and my coaching staff to go in there and let it go." His career best had been 56 points, on March 20, 2005, for Cleveland against Toronto. Glen Rice scored 56 to set the Heat record on April 15, 1995, against Orlando. James had 24 points at halftime, then added 25 in the third quarter. The record-breaker came with 5:46 left, when James spun through three defenders for a layup that fell as he tumbled to the court. "There was an efficiency to what he was doing," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "The rim looked like an ocean for him." Spoelstra walked into his postgame news conference with a confession: He nearly took James out after the third quarter. Good thing he thought better of that plan. "He was in a great groove, obviously," Spoelstra said. Al Jefferson had 38 points and 19 rebounds for the Bobcats, his huge night merely an afterthought. This was all about LeBron. "You take away his 61 points," Jefferson said, "and we still had a fighting chance there at the end." Yes, even the Bobcats were marveling at James. He was hitting from everywhere, even a pull-up three-pointer from about 30 feet -- Spoelstra joked it was from 40 -- late in the third quarter, as the crowd roared and the Heat bench jumped with joy. "Yeah, that was a designed play," Spoelstra deadpanned. "Weve been working on that one for a while." That was the moment, James said, when he knew he was in the midst of a special night. "I felt pretty good in the first half but halftime can always kind of derail things and slow things up," James said. "But I was able to get things going once again in the third quarter and I knew it could be one of those nights." Not "one of those nights." Even for James, this was like no other. Most points in a game. Most field goals in a game. Most points in any quarter in Heat history, with the 25 in the third. Most points in the second half, 37, by any Heat player ever. "Once he sniffed 60, we knew he was going for it," Heat forward Shane Battier said. "And the amazing part is the efficiency. Good Lord. Sixty-one on 33 shots, thats Wilt Chamberlain-esque. Thats pretty amazing. Incredible performance." When James checked out with 1:24 left, the entire Heat roster met him near midcourt for high-fives and hugs, and the sellout crowd gave him a standing ovation. A second huge roar followed when he waved to the crowd, as "M-V-P" chants rained down. Charlotte has allowed the two biggest single-game scoring totals in the NBA this season. Carmelo Anthony had 62 points for the New York Knicks against the Bobcats on Jan. 24. Chris Bosh scored 15 for the Heat, and Toney Douglas added 10. Chris Douglas-Roberts and Anthony Tolliver each scored 12 for Charlotte. "If hes going to shoot the ball like that from that range, theres nobody thats going to beat them," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. Miami was without guard Dwyane Wade, who got a night off to rest. Spoelstra stressed theres been no setback for Wade, who has been on a knee-maintenance program throughout this season and is averaging 23.5 points on 62 per cent shooting since the All-Star break. Wade probably didnt mind sitting for this one. It gave him a courtside seat for the show. James scored 11 in the first quarter, after which Miami led by three, and added 13 more in the second. His 24-point first half was the highest-scoring opening 24 minutes for the four-time MVP in nearly a year, helping stake the Heat to a 60-54 lead at the break. Jefferson was up to 26 at that point. He didnt cool off much after halftime, either. It just didnt matter. James, said Clifford, "was phenomenal." There was no way Jefferson or anyone else was keeping up with James, who had to listen to critics in recent weeks say that Kevin Durants scoring for Oklahoma City this season shifted the balance of MVP power. Not so fast. "Every night I go on the floor I want to be the MVP, of this league, MVP of this team, MVP for me, myself and my family," James said. "Ive set a high standard and I have to live by that." James made three three-pointers in the first seven minutes of the quarter -- he was 6 for 6 from beyond the arc at that point -- and when Charlotte bit on his head fake from the top of the key, James coolly found Douglas to set up another 3. A tip-in by James followed not long afterward and just like that, the lead was up to 83-63. Charlotte scored the next six points, but any notion that the game was slipping from Miamis control was quickly extinguished. James scored the next six himself, a pair of three-point plays to restore the 20-point edge and give him 43 points, already a season high. All that was left to see was what hed finish with. The answer was history. "I was happy I was able to make a few plays to help us win," James said. NOTES: Spoelstra won the Eastern Conference coach of the month award for February. After that is anyones guess. Carroll said Monday he plans on Richard Sherman and Brandon Browner playing this week against the Bears, despite the possibility they could be facing four-game suspensions for violating the NFLs policy on performance-enhancing drugs. Carroll didnt say much regarding the duo at his regularly scheduled media availability, trying not to violate league rules. But his belief is that Sherman and Browner will be able to play in potentially Seattles most important game of the season. "As of right now, Im planning on those guys playing," Carroll said. ESPN.com first reported Sunday afternoon, following the Seahawks 24-21 loss at Miami, that Browner and Sherman are facing suspensions and are in the process of appealing. The team said Sunday night it was aware of the report and according to the leagues collective bargaining agreement, players can continue to play until the appeal is heard and settled. The team is limited in what it can say regarding the possible suspensions and Carroll eventually said he wouldnt comment further until there is some resolution. "Because its so important we do this properly Im not going to comment on anything about it. Thats the best way to do this because these are league issues," Carroll said. "At this point Im going to keep it there and hope you can respect that this is the way we have to do that, and we can talk about it later on." In a phone interview with Seattle reporters after Carrolls press conference finished, Browners agent Peter Schaffer said that his client only received notice of the failed test last week. "Brandon Browner has no knowledge of how any illegal substance could have gotten into his system," Schaffer said. "He is an outstanding person and a very good football player. He takes tremendous care of his body and he is very careful with what he puts into it. Were exploring all avenues to try and figure out how any substance out of the ordinary would be in his system." Schaffer added that the league typically schedules appeals within 20 days of the notice being received, depending on circumstances. He did not provide specifics on when Browners appeal would take place. "Its too early to tell what were going to need, what witnesses and evidence and experts are going to be required, so there is no way to even guess at this point," he said. Shermaan, an active participant in social media, posted on his Twitter account late Sunday night after arriving back in the Northwest, "This .dddddddddddd.. issue will be resolved soon and the truth will come out. Not worried." If Browner and Sherman are found guilty of violating the leagues policy, they would be the fourth and fifth Seahawks players in the last calendar year to be violators. Guard John Moffitt was suspended four games late last season. Reserve offensive lineman Allen Barbre was suspended for the first four games of this season before being released by the team once his suspension was up. And just last week, rookie safety Winston Guy was handed a four-game suspension after taking an over-the-counter product that had a banned substance in the ingredients, according to his agent. None of those suspensions could have the impact of Browner and Sherman, and it could not come at a much worse time with the Seahawks trying to hold on to the final wild-card spot in the NFC. The Seahawks (6-5) are tied with Tampa Bay and Minnesota, but hold the tiebreakers. Seattles defence is predicated on the ability of its cornerbacks to play man coverage and lock up receivers. Sherman and Browner allow strong safety Kam Chancellor to play closer to the line of scrimmage in run support and give free safety Earl Thomas the chance to roam the secondary with his speed. If the duo does miss time, Seattle would turn to veteran Marcus Trufant and a trio of youngsters -- Walter Thurmond, Byron Maxwell and Jeremy Lane -- to fill the spots. Trufant was a starter until getting injured during the 2011 season, while Seattle has hoped Thurmond would develop into a key contributor, but he has been slowed by injuries. Thurmond has yet to be active for a game this season after starting the year on the physically unable to perform list. "Theyve been special in their effectiveness and a lot of it has to do with the way we ask them to play. It suits them very well. It fits. Theyve been a big factor for us. We love the way theyre playing. ... How it develops in the future with our guys when they get a chance they can play at the level and style that we want," Carroll said. "We still try and tailor our expectation of our play to the athlete and what he can do and what theyre capable of doing, and weve always looked at it that way. Some guys play a little different than others and we have a pretty good group of guys to battle and give us versatility, I think." ' ' '

Its status quo for Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby. Crosby, who hasnt played a game in the National Hockey League in 10 months, spoke to the media on Monday following his latest visit to his doctor. When asked how the appointment went, Crosby informed the media that his status hasnt changed. He also took time to address the reports that he would return to the lineup on November 11. "I havent really thought about that," Crosby told the media. "Their guess is as good as mine." The 24-year-old has practiced with the club since training camp opened Sept. 17, and he has remained symptom-free from the concussion that occurred following violent hits in successive games Jan. 1 and Jan. 5. With the Penguins being in the midst of five straight days off, Crosby spoke about experiencing more contact in practice. "Weve got a few practices, so I think whether I was trying to get contact in or not, I think this was a good week of practice to get some intense practices in and make the most of it," Crosby said. "Its a good time to really go hard and see how things go." BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ryan Hunter-Reay deftly guided his car around the rain-soaked track, stayed out of trouble and wound up with a much happier ending. Hunter-Reay coasted to his second straight victory at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday when the rain-shortened IndyCar race finished under caution, with Andretti Autosport teammate Marco Andretti behind him. The win came two weeks after Hunter-Reay touched off what turned into a seven-car pileup with an ill-timed attempt to pass Josef Newgarden at Long Beach to end what had been a dominating performance. "The week after Long Beach was a pretty long one," Hunter-Reay said. "It was one where I just wanted to get back in a racecar as soon as I could. "We knew it would be tough here. When it came to race time, I had the car in the wet, I had the car in the dry. They gave me exactly what I needed. I knew it was going to be close to make it all work out because it was so easy to make a mistake today. Just thrilled. This victory feels real good." A full-course caution came out for the final seven minutes of the timed race after rookie Mikhail Aleshin lost control and went off the track. That left Hunter-Reay unchallenged. Scott Dixon was third, followed by Simon Pagenaud and pole-sitter Will Power, a two-time winner at Barber who had a slight but costly misjudgment on a slippery track in the tight Turn 5. "He was out there cutting the grass," Hunter-Reay said. "I had to take advantage of that. It was so easy to do that today. I almost lost this race three times." There was some slipping and sliding, especially in the minutes after the field switched from the wet tires with several drivers leaving the track. He passed Power on lap 16 when the Australian left the track and skirted by the tire barrier before pulling back on. "I kept creeping my braking point a little bit further and further, and I went too far," Power said. "Its tough to not push past the limits with wet patches everywhere. We really didnt have the pace in the dry anyway, but that sure didnt help our cause when I went off course." The turn is called "Charlottes Web" because of a huge spider sculpture stationed there. "I almost threw it away three or four times there myself," Hunter-Reay said. "It was just tiptoeing around.dddddddddddd It was a very fine line between getting it all right or getting it all wrong. "Any guy thats been in an IndyCar on the Web will tell you thats how it is. Youve got to go up the risk side to the get the reward out of it, but its really easy to throw it all away." Its the 12th career win for Hunter-Reay, who was alone up front during the caution until Andretti pulled even at the finish line to savour the moment with his teammate. He led three times for a total of 40 laps. "Theyve given us great cars here, and a second win in a row for Ryan is awesome," said Andretti, whose radio worked only sporadically down the stretch. Dixon said running a time race was "kind of annoying" and Andretti said it removed some strategy from the formula. They wound up going 69 laps, and Hunter-Reay was up front for the final time starting on No. 52. "The race should be the full distance," Dixon said. "To have to shorten these races for TV, you know, I understand the difficult predicament that everybody is in, but these are championship races. They all pay the same amount of points. "You decide to take 30 laps off them ... I think it changes strategy a lot and youre constantly chasing that window. Then ultimately you finish on a caution, too, which is also a bit of a bummer for the fans. In the future, hopefully we can find a way around that." Drivers were focused on handling the track conditions, not payback from any lingering anger over Long Beach clashes. It ended badly for Aleshin, who walked back to pit road while the rest of the field finished. Earlier Sebastien Bourdais had spun the Russian from behind, leaving him stalled. Bourdais received a drive-through penalty for avoidable contact. The race was a change-up for Dixon, who finished second in each of the first four races at Barber. "We went the wrong way, but it was an interesting day," Dixon said. "Whenever you have a rain delay it sort of puts a strain on everybody trying to figure out what we need to do. "The cars were pretty good. The track suits wet conditions. There were a few troublesome areas with standing water and a few of the guys found those spots. But generally the race went fairly smoothly." ' ' '

DETROIT -- The Detroit Red Wings leaned on one of their only healthy stars to get a much-needed win. Henrik Zetterberg scored twice and assisted on Valtteri Filppulas tying goal with 4:02 left, then Darren Helm scored with 1:13 remaining to give the banged-up Red Wings to a 4-3 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night. "Youd like to produce when your big guys are out," Zetterberg said. Detroit had lost five of seven to slip behind Western Conference and Central Division-leading St. Louis. The Red Wings were missing injured All-Stars Pavel Datsyuk and Jimmy Howard, seven-time Norris Trophy winning defenceman Nicklas Lidstrom, forwards Todd Bertuzzi and Justin Abdelkader along with defencemen Jonathan Ericsson and Jakub Kindl. "You have to give credit to the farm team," Zetterberg said. "When we need them, theyre ready to play." With a several called-up prospects from the AHLs Grand Rapids Griffins, Detroit struggled until the final minutes. It took the Red Wings about 10 minutes in each of the first periods to get a shot. They finished with just 15 shots for their lowest total since April 1, 2004, according to STATS, LLC, in a 3-2 win over St. Louis Gustav Nyquist, playing in his sixth NHL game, had an assist on the winning goal that was scored by Helm in front of the net while engaged with Kings defenceman Drew Doughty. Brendan Smith, in his eighth game in the league, took Zetterbergs pass and set up Filppula on the late tying goal. "Coach (Mike) Babcock told us these are must-wins," Smith said. Losses loom even larger for Los Angeles, which has dropped two straight after winning four or five in a race for one of the final spots in the Western Conference playoffs. "What weve got to do is not get down and look ahead," Justin Williams said. "Weve got 14 games left." The Kings had their chances, including with 5:54 left when Dwight King put them ahead 3-2, but couldnt beat a shorthanded team. "When you keep shots down like that and you score three goals, you should win," Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter said. Jonathan Quick, though, stopped just 11 shots for the Kings. "Every game has its own challenges," Quick said. "Ones where you dont see as many shots, its more mentally challenging." Los Angeles pulled Quick to have an extra skater and had a 6-on-4 advantage on a power play with 23.2 seconds left and a faceoff in the Detroit end. The Kings got the puck, but Joey MacDonald stopped Jeff Carters shot with 15.2 seconds left and they could not get another shot on net. "Blew that game," Dustin Brown said. "We played a good game and we let it get away." MacDonald made 21 saves for the Red Wings. Los Angeles had twice as many shots as the Red Wings through two periods, but allowed Zetterberg to tie it with goals late in the first and second periods on two of their eight shots. Carter, who assisted on Kings goal, put the Kings ahead 1-0 on a power play 7:29 into the game, and Justin Williams put them ahead 2-1 with 2:19 left in the first period. Zetterberg made the most of his opportunities, scoring his 17th and 18th goals on two of his first four shots to score more than once in a game for the first time since March 16, 2011. NOTES: Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said Datsyuk (right knee), Howard (groin) and Bertuzzi (groin) are expected to play at some point during next weeks three-game trip in California; Kindl (upper body) is a week or two away from returning and Ericsson (left) wrist will be out for another two to three weeks. In the past two years, the St. Louis Cardinals extended even longer droughts in Pittsburgh and Washington.WASHINGTON -- With an emphasis on defence, Paul George, Roy Hibbert and the rest of the Indiana Pacers are suddenly performing the way they did at the start of the season. And they dont care how ugly the product might look. Playing precisely the way they did to earn the No. 1 seed -- before a late-season swoon -- the Pacers held the Wizards to a franchise-low scoring total Friday night to win 85-63 and take a 2-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. "Listen, we dont worry about if were looking good for TV. The other teams can do that, can fill that void with fancy basketball. We dont worry about that," Indiana forward David West said. "Were OK with this. We can win games in the 80s." Set aside Georges 23 points, and neither team looked good on offence. Not at all. It was 17-all after the first quarter, and the Pacers led 34-33 at halftime, only the 13th time teams combined for 67 or fewer points in a playoff game in the shot-clock era, according to STATS. After allowing 102 points in Washingtons Game 1 victory, Indiana has won two in a row, including holding the Wizards to 82 in Game 2. Game 4 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday night in Washington. "This was probably the ugliest game of the post-season thus far. This is our style of basketball," said George, who helped limit Bradley Beal to 6-for-19 shooting. "Thats what we do. Whether you like it or not, are a fan of watching our games or not, defence is what we hang our hats on." Washington made only 24 field goals, a team post-season worst, on 73 attempts, 32.9 per cent. That included 4 of 16 on 3s, and it didnt get much better on free throws, where the Wizards were 11 of 21. "A clunker," Wizards coach Randy Wittman called it. The Wizards never had scored fewer than 75 points in a playoff game -- the previous low came in a first-round series-ending victory against Chicago 1 1/2 weeks ago -- or fewer than 64 in a regular-season game. The 63 points also matched the fourth-lowest total by any club since 1954-55, according to STATS. "They took us out of our comfort zone offensively," Wizards forward Drew Gooden said. "We were overly confident. ... This is a humbling expperience for us.dddddddddddd" So much for the bandwagon-hopping in Washington. There were boos on occasion, and most of the fans started heading to the exits after Georges 3 with 3 1/2 minutes left made it 75-58. The 7-foot-2 Hibbert was again a factor for Indiana at both ends, coming up with three blocks and forcing Washingtons players to alter other shots. He also contributed 14 points and five rebounds. Before tip-off Friday, Pacers coach Frank Vogel was asked if he sensed which version of Hibbert would show up -- the zero-point, zero-rebound disaster of Game 1 or the 28-point, nine-rebound dominator of Game 2. Vogels reply, offered with a smile: "Probably somewhere in the middle of Game 1 and Game 2." Turned out to be exactly right. "In the past two games," George said about the All-Star centre, "hes been great at just defending our basket." Beals perspective? "Im 6-3, 6-4. Hes 7-2," Beal said. "So you do the math." John Wall, Washingtons point guard, had five turnovers in his previous four games, but he had seven Friday, to go along with 15 points and six assists. Trevor Ariza had 12 points, but zero in the second half. Marcin Gortat scored four points one game after having 21. And Nene had eight points on 3-of-14 shooting and only three rebounds. "Johns got to go out and play aggressive," Wittman said. "I thought he had some indecision in transition -- Do I go? Do I dont go? -- which gets you caught up in the air and some turnovers that way." Washingtons woes shouldnt have been too surprising, given that the Pacers ranked No. 2 in the 30-team NBA in team defence during the regular season, allowing only 92.3 points per game. Not only that, but Washingtons two lowest-scoring games all season -- 66 points in one, 73 in the other -- came in losses to Indiana. And now that version of the Pacers might be back. "It feels like it," George said. "Gradually, were taking baby steps." MIAMI - LeBron James scored 36 points, and the Miami Heat moved back atop the Eastern Conference standings by running past the Indiana Pacers 98-86 on Friday night. The Heat scored the first 16 points of the second half and werent in trouble again. Miami (54-25) leads the Pacers (54-26) by a half-game in the East race. Mario Chalmers scored 13, Udonis Haslem added 11 and Chris Bosh and Ray Allen each scored 10 for the Heat. Paul George scored 22 for Indiana, which got 18 from David West, 12 from Luis Scola and 11 from Lance Stephenson. Pacers centre Roy Hibbert had only five points and one rebound, grabbing it with just over 2 minutes left in the game. Miami has games against Atlanta, Washington and Philadelphia left. Win them all, and the Heat would have home-court advantage through at least the East finals — which went seven games against Indiana last season. The Pacers — who sat their starters against Milwaukee on Wednesday in an effort to rest for this one — still play Oklahoma City and Orlando. In the opening minutes of the second half, a predictably tight game turned into a surprise blowout. The Heat were up three at the half, then opened the third on a 16-0 run. Chalmers opened the barrage with a 3-pointer, James hit a pair of free throws after taking a hard foul from West in transition, and a steal and layup from Toney Douglas forced the Pacers to call time down by 10. Miami was just getting started. James got fouled by Stephenson and turned that into a three-point play, and consecutive putbacks by Haslem off misses by James at the rim pushed Miamis lead to 17 with 8:13 left in the third. That led to Indianas second timeout of the quarter. And a couple of minutes later, the Pacers were up to more timeouts taken since halftime (three) than points scored (two). Indianas first field goal of the half came when Bosh was called for goaltending on a shot by Luis Scola with 6 minutes left. Miamis lead was eventually as much as 23, and it was 76-54 when the Pacers started to make things look plenty interesting, if only for a few moments. Indiana scored 13 straight points, getting within 76-67 early in the fourth. But Evan Turner was whistled for a technical foul after arguing a non-call from two possessions earlier, Ray Allen made a free throw to end the Heat drought, and that started a 9-0 rebuttal run by the Heat. Rashard Lewis ended that spurt with a dunk, good enough to earn him a chest-bump from James moments later, and just like that Miami was up by 18 again. Neither team led by more than five in the opening half, after which Miami held a 45-42 lead. James made four jumpers in the first 5 1/2 minutes, then missed all three of his shots in the remainder of the half, but still went into the break leading all scorers with 17 points. There were two things of note from the opening 24 minutes: Indiana had 10 turnovers to Miamis three, and Pacers centre Roy Hibbert was no factor. Hibbert, the 7-foot-2 centre who has simply toyed with Miami plenty of times in the clubs recent meetings, played 16 first-half minutes with basically nothing to show for his time. He went into the break with no field-goal attempts and no rebounds — the first time hes ever logged that many minutes in a half without at least one shot or board. NOTES: Miami kept Dwyane Wade (hamstring) out for the ninth straight game, and Greg Oden was still sidelined by back spasms. ... Haslem is Miamis all-time leader in offensive rebounds, grabbing the 1,506th of his career in the second quarter. ... From the Department of Go Figure: Miami went 0-4 against Brooklyn, Indiana went 4-0 against Brooklyn, so the Heat and Pacers went 2-2 against each other. ... At 3-5 and 0-40 down in the second, she faced the prospect of a difficult third set but strung together a series of powerful serves to save the game, then broke Riske to force a tiebreak. "I was very happy to get through that second set after I was down," Ivanovic said. "There was a bit of wind and I had wind nerves, there were a few mis-hits and then this (shoulder injury) happened."
