Houston sent hard-throwing pitcher Mike Foltynewicz to the Braves along with right-hander Andrew Thurman and third baseman Rio Ruiz, with Atlanta also obtaining minor league hurler James Hoyt in the five-player deal. The Braves also shipped 2014 Silver Slugger winner Justin Upton to San Diego and moved outfielder Jason Heyward to St. Louis. The Braves did receive a promising return in this deal, as Foltynewicz and Ruiz were ranked as the fourth and ninth-best prospects in a loaded Astros system by MLB.com. Foltynewicz made his major league debut last season, appearing in 16 games as a reliever and posting a 5.30 ERA over 18 2/3 innings. The 2010 first-round pick has worked mostly as a starter in the minor leagues and struck out 102 batters in 102 2/3 innings at Triple-A Oklahoma City in 2014. Ruiz, 20, batted .293 with 11 homers, 37 doubles, 77 RBI and a .387 on-base percentage at High-A Lancaster last season. Thurman, a second-round pick of Houston in 2013, spent all of 2014 at Low-A Quad Cities and went 7-9 with a 5.38 ERA over 26 games (20 starts). Hoyt split the 2014 campaign between Triple-A Gwinett and Double-A Mississippi. The 28-year-old posted a 3.17 ERA with seven saves over a combined 52 relief appearances between the two levels. This is an exercise I have undertaken a few times, starting in 2009, and hope that Ive refined my approach a little bit in that time to help paint a better picture. This latest update goes through NHL Drafts from 1990 through 2009, leaving some time for the 2009 picks to establish an NHL career, and assigned a numerical value to each of the players selected, using the following guidelines: 10 - Generational9 - Elite Player8 - First Line, Top Pair D7 - Top Six Forward, Top Four D6 - Top Nine Forward, Top Six D5 - NHL Regular 4 - Fringe NHLer3 - Very Good Minor Leaguer2 - Minor Leaguer, under 50 NHL games1 - 10 or fewer NHL games A few disclaimers:- There is not necessarily an equal talent gap from 10-9-8 as there is from 1-2-3 (and there are far more ones than tens), so the average grades may not be right on target for what the average player at that slot will become but they should be in the ballpark. - Its difficult to properly evaluate players from the most recent drafts, as there is a certain amount of projection still required to determine where their careers are headed, so any evaluations from 2009, in particular, tend to be conservative, making the percentage of players "Ranked 7 or better" lower in some cases. - My focus was on the best four years of a players career, in determining whether production/usage would warrant first line, second line, third line status, but players whose careers were shortened or had a narrow peak could be knocked down a peg. - There are any number of reasons why a player may or may not make it to the NHL, so when I list players under "worst", there could be extenuating circumstances, whether its injury or being stuck as a late first-round pick trying to make a talented team. Even so, Ive removed Alexei Cherepanov (#17 in 2007), Luc Bourdon (#10 in 2005) and Mickey Renaud (fifth-round pick in 2007) from the evaluation as their NHL careers werent established enough before their tragic deaths. Below is my value for draft picks, broken down pick-by-pick for the first round, by 5-pick groups in the second round, 10-pick groups in the third and fourth round, then 15-pick groups in rounds five, six and seven. Included is the average rating for players taken in those slots for the years from 1990-2009, with best and worsts of the group included for all first round picks, then only bests beyond pick No. 30. (How would you like to determine the worst fourth-round picks of all time?). Also included are percentages of those selections that ranked at least as top-six forwards, top four defencemen or starting goaltenders and, by contrast, a percentage that maxed out as fourth-liners, depth defencemen, backup goaltenders (or worse). Then, there is a percentage of players taken in that slot that have played at least 100 NHL games, a relatively low bar to say that someone was an NHL player. For those that are just embarking on their pro careers, I tend to give the benefit of the doubt, so even if Chris Krieder has 89 NHL games, I feel pretty comfortable including him among the group that will play at least 100. Before the numbers, some observations:- There is real value to holding the No. 1 pick and its getting better. While there are slip-ups every so often, they are becoming increasingly rare. The last first overall pick that would have fallen short of being a top-six forward, top four defenceman or starting goaltender would probably be Rick DiPietro. That was in 2000 and while a cautionary tale against drafting a goaltender first overall or signing 15-year contracts, DiPietro was an above average goaltender for about three seasons (2003-2004 through 2006-2007) before injuries derailed his career. - While there is plenty of talk of the Panthers trading out of the No. 1 pick, and they very well could do that, there is an element of risk involved in sliding too far down. Some risk starts to show as early as pick three or four, but outside the top five a team is at least as likely to land a depth player as they are a significant contributor. This becomes particularly interesting when a team at the top might consider moving down to take the likes of William Nylander or Nikolaj Ehlers, skilled players with high upside, but maybe they come with a little more risk and thats the downside part of the calculation when looking further down the board. - Another point to consider about the top pick is whether it will get used on Barrie Colts defenceman Aaron Ekblad. There is more risk involved when taking defencemen at the top of the draft, but the difference isnt such that defenceman ought to be ignored altogether. Fair to question whether Ekblad has a high enough ceiling or whether his relative success in junior is predicated on a size and strength advantage that should diminish in the pros, but he shouldnt be eliminated from consideration merely because he plays defence. Teams could have taken Chris Pronger or Drew Doughty at the top of the draft and ended up quite satisfied with their selections. Even though he has nothing to do with those numbers, maybe that could affect the appeal of Thatcher Demko, the top goaltending prospect. Ranked 7 or better: 29.9%Ranked 5 or worse: 53.7%At Least 100 NHL Games (or very likely): 70.6% Goaltenders in First 30 PicksAverage Rating: 4.11Best: Martin Brodeur, Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, Tuukka Rask. Ranked 7 or better: 27.2%Ranked 5 or worse: 61.4%At Least 100 NHL Games (or very likely): 50.0% - The 15th pick has been some inexplicable wasteland, the lowest-rated pick of the first 29 and that includes having Erik Karlsson taken there by the Ottawa Senators in 2008. Only 40% of 15th picks played 100 games in the NHL, so best of luck, Detroit. - Beyond the first round, there is better than a 34.0% chance that a second-round pick (31-60) plays 100 NHL games. This falls to about 29.3% of third-round (61-90) picks, 19.3% in the fourth round (91-120), 14.7% in the fifth round (121-150), 15.5% in the sixth round (151-180) and 9.2% in the seventh round (181-210). A neat trick to have sixth-round picks slightly more successful than fifth-round picks, but that speaks to the randomness at play by that point in the draft. Land a Pavel Datsyuk or Andrei Markov or Brian Campbell at that stage and it affects the value. - While I enjoy the draft as much as anyone, and its always interesting to see how teams approach talent acquisition, hopefully these numbers indicate the uncertainty of the process. There are very few sure things on draft day. He set a team record in 2012 with 18 1/2 sacks to go with 28 tackles for loss and six forced fumbles. In the off-season, Elway called Miller the best football player on the planet. But Miller ran afoul of the NFLs drug program, was suspended for the first month and a half of the season and never really returned to form in 2013. The Panthers offense is the definition of mediocre, 16th in a 32-team league at 346.7 ypg but they have some real threats in rookie receiver Kelvin Benjamin as well as star tight end Greg Olsen, who both finished with over 1,000 receiving yards. Carolina could also get a boost in the backfield with the potential return of Williams from the broken hand. The veteran was actually probable last week but was deactivated because he was deemed a liability in pass protection. The defensive backfield is headlined by Harper, who led the team with a career-high four interceptions, but really took off when rookies Boston, Harpers running mate at safety, and cornerback Bene Benwikere entered the lineup. We were trying to find answers as a coaching staff, the right combination of guys -- and we found it, Rivera said when discussing his rookies. With all three levels hitting on all cylinders in December the group has limited opposing quarterbacks to a 64.6 passer rating -- second only to the Seahawks dominant defense. Less than 24 months on, his press conference looks as ludicrous as all of the others the club has had during their brief eight-year existence. Words, tossed aside on to the growing mound of empty promises after another project and plan went array. It was impossible not to think about this clubs history in Novembers on Friday when the team called its most recent press conference. Sitting at the top table talking to the citys media was Michael Bradley, an American international midfielder who this club could only have dreamed of getting just last November. A year on, Bradley stands for much more than being a single, albeit designated player, member of Toronto FCs player staff. The 27-year-old is the remaining face of a winter of fantasies for the clubs fan base. He was unveiled as one third of a holy trinity of DPs yet less than a year later one is more than likely staying in England and not coming back while another hasnt yet proved he deserves such a tag of quality. That leaves Bradley all alone. It is a path that has led him to addressing the media about the season just gone. Another November press conference. Yet, this one feels different. For a quiet, seemingly shy man, you can always count on Bradley to think before he speaks. Its a motto that youd be hard pressed to say about many others who have spoke on behalf of this club on a November day. We realize we have to get better, improve and find the right ways to make ourselves better, he said on Friday. That is going to include bringing in new players and certain guys moving on. We need to find a way to get the right sorts of players in and the right sorts of men in. We need more quality, who in a football sense, can add something but we also need more guys with personality, more leaders, more competitors, more men. Although it is yet to be decided, such a group is unlikely to include Jermain Defoe. With Jermain, inside the locker room, there were never any issues. For me, he needs to decide where he is in his life, in his career and what he wants. He has to figure out what he wants from his career, his life. As a player I hope the best possible decision for everybody can be made and that he is focused and comfortable wherever he is. Bradleys own tenure at the club has not gone completely smoothly and in a World Cup year he remains in the middle of an awkward club vs country triangle as head coach Greg Vanney admitted last month. My conversations are more with Michael and how Michael feels he should be played. We are with the player on a daily basis and we have a rapport and a relationship with the player on a daily basis and how they train and how they work. I think Jürgen feels like hes a player who should be higher up the field, Vanney added. But I dont know that Jürgen and Michael see things exactly eye-to-eye. So I work more closely with Michael than Jürgen in that realm. It is not a coincidence that Vanney, a man still trying to prove to some that he is the man to lead the club forward, chose Bradley as the lightning rod subject to publicly reveal leadership qualities. Vanney knows he is lucky to have Bradley at this club and it is imperative for him to ensure he puts the midfielder in a position that he is comfortable in. Bradley chose not to unveil, publicly, where he prefers to play in midfield but is clear that he is comfortable under Vanney. I have a very clear idea how I can best help the team, Bradley admits but once again he turned the conversation away from him and stressed the importance of a united group on and off the field. With Greg here there is an understanding of what we are about and how things need to be better. We need to make sure the balance is right. We cant fall into a trap that a number ten, or one guy, will fix everything. Dont misunderstand me, in no way does this team need to be blown up. Things didnt go the way any of us hoped this year. We werent good enough but to stand the test of time every part of what we do here has to be better. That is the tone and the mentality we have every day. Bradley, when talking about Defoe, gave the clearest indication yet about the message he can bring to the current and future players of this club. I am a firm believer in life that you have to find things that you are passionate about and you have to be then ready to go all in. It was the second time in the game where Daviss speed on the basepaths earned Toronto (55-65) a run. The centre-fielder opened scoring in the third when he hit a sharp single to Bostons Jon Lester, where the pitcher fumbled the ball. Lesters throw to first went past Mike Napoli, letting Davis round second. Boston right-fielder Shane Victorino threw to third but the ball bounced off Davis and into foul territory, allowing the speedy Blue Jay to sprint home. "I was hoping I could just get to first. They made an errant throw and after that I just went to run," said Davis. "Honestly, I didnt know where the ball was. I heard our third-base coach (Luis) Rivera saying go, go, go! "OK, Im gone." Lester said that Daviss speed can generate errors because it makes defences hurry. "Obviously his speed makes you rush a little bit," the Red Sox starter said. "It would have been nice to keep him on third right there. The ball takes a bad hop and hits off him and scores the run." Davis went 3-for-5 and Edwin Encarnacion hit two doubles and scored a run for the Blue Jays. Esmil Rogers (3-7) pitched six innings with six strikeouts, five hits and an earned run. Reliever Brett Cecil ruined Rogers chance at a victory though, blowing Torontos 3-1 lead in the ninth inning. Brad Lincoln pitched an inning and a third in relief to earn the win for Toronto. Rogers, who started the season in the bullpen, was likely going to return to reliever duties after Wednesdays start. His strong performance against the Red Sox earned him a reprieve, however. "He was on the plate, he was making good pitches," said Blue Jays manager John Gibbons. "It all comes down to putting the ball in a good spot. He was popping it pretty good tonight too, keeping it down. "We cant put him in the pen after that, can we?" Designated hitter David Ortiz hit a home run for Boston (72-50), while Lester (10-7) gave up three runs -- two earned -- and fanned three hitters over six and a third innings of work. Brandon Workman (3-2) pitched three innings for the Red Sox and took the loss. Davis drew cheers when he led off the bottom of the 10th with his second double of the game. " The Blue Jays added to their 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. Encarnacion hit a double up the third-base line and was driven in when Mark DeRosa hit a double to shallow right field. Both teams stranded runners in scoring position in the fifth inning, maintaining the Blue Jays 2-0 lead. Ortiz pulled Boston to within one on his home run to deep right field in the sixth inning. Encarnacion hit a second double to lead off the bottom of the sixth, and Lawrie reached first after being hit by a pitch. Encarnacion was moved to third when DeRosa grounded into a double play. J.P. Arencibia then doubled off the left-field wall to make it 3-1 for Toronto. Reliever Neil Wagner took the mound for the Blue Jays in the seventh, quickly retiring three Red Sox hitters. Cecil unravelled after that, giving up a double to Jarrod Saltalamacchia with Will Middlebrooks reaching first after being hit by a pitch. Cecil was pulled in favour of Lincoln after giving up a single to Jacoby Ellsbury. Lincoln got the Blue Jays out of the inning when Victorino flied out to left field. Lincoln stayed on the mound for the 10th, with Pedroia reaching base on Lawries fielding error to start the inning. After Ortiz flew out to left, Lincoln struck out Gomes and got Napoli to ground out to third, setting the stage for Lawries game-winning hit.
