ST. Matt Schaub Jersey . JOHNS, N.L. -- The playoffs are a sure thing for the St. Johns IceCaps, and Sundays 6-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack featured a realistic playoff line-up for the home team. With the Winnipeg Jets season ending, the IceCaps were sent back six players, five of which drew into the line-up for Sundays game: Carl Klingberg, Patrice Cormier, Eric ODell, Ben Chiarot and Zach Redmond. "These are players that (are here) to give us our best chance of success this year," IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge said. "I thought they came down and their play, the energy, was good. I liked the way all those players played tonight. One of the returnees, Carl Klingberg, said hes ready for the playoffs. "We all knew we were going back (from Winnipeg at seasons end), and it was a lot of fun coming back here. I felt really good to be back. Were always trying to work hard, and we all did. We didnt come out perfectly in the first, but we battled back We battled for each other." After Saturdays 7-2 loss, McCambridge was happy with his teams rebound tonight. "It was a more complete game," McCambridge said, "We got down early, which you dont want to happen when youre able to integrate new players into the line-up, but it didnt phase us. We kept pushing on and I liked the way we played. I liked our pace. The energy level was at the point where you need it at this time of year." John Albert scored two goals, while Carl Klingberg, Blair Riley, John Albert, Kael Mouillierat and Jerome Samson scored one apiece for the IceCaps (44-23-7). Chris McCarthy and Danny Kristo replied for Hartford (35-32-7). The Wolf Pack struck first when Syvret pounced on a rebound and scored low, 6:57 into the game and on the power play. The IceCaps tied it when a Kyle MacKinnon wrap-around banked off Blair Rileys foot 8:34 into the opening frame. At the 14:19 mark of the first, Albert scooped a puck over the pads of Hartford goalie David LeNeveu on the doorstep, while falling. The IceCaps added another when Mouillierat scored a perfect wrist shot high glove from the top of the right faceoff dot on the power play with 1:25 left in the first. At the 10:01 mark of the second period, Eric ODell pulled a nifty move to beat his man when entering the zone before feeding Klingberg, who went right-to-left on a move to score for St. Johns. Samson tipped home a Klingberg point shot with the goalie pulled on a delayed penalty at the 10:56 mark of the second to make it 5-1 IceCaps. Hartford scored on a 5-on-3 power play when Kristo went high glove with a shot from the point 12:46 into the second period. Albert tipped home a Fredheim point shot with 4:03 left in the game. OTTAWA -- Antoine Vermette scored three times -- including the overtime winner -- for the Phoenix Coyotes in a 4-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday afternoon. Tommy McDonald Jersey . Vermette found a loose puck in front of Senators goalie Craig Anderson and pushed it through to the back of the net at 2:23. He now had three goals against his former team in five games. Radim Vrbata also scored for the Coyotes (19-10-6), who halted a three-game losing streak. Marc Methot, Kyle Turris, and Zach Smith had goals in a losing effort for Ottawa (14-17-7). The Senators have now lost three straight. Both goaltenders, Anderson for the Senators and Mike Smith for the Coyotes, saw plenty of action as Ottawa outshot Phoenix 40-38. Smith made solid back-to-back saves pad saves on Turris and Clarke MacArthur two minutes in overtime to keep the game going. The second, on MacArthur, Smith was on his stomach and just stretched his right leg out enough to get his toe on the puck. Seconds later Vermette scored the winner Vermettes second goal tied the game with just 2:13 to play in the third period and forced the overtime session. While on the power play the Coyotes were aided with two horrible clearing attempts by the Senators and eventually Vermette took a pass from David Moss and deposited the puck into an empty net behind a fallen Anderson. Ottawa was on the positive side of a 2-0 score early in the second period. Fresh from the penalty box, Zack Smith got a long pass from Eric Gryba and skated in on a partial break from centre ice and beat Mike Smith high to the stick side at 3:10. The lead was short lived though as the Coyotes scored twice in a little more than three minutes, including once on the power play, to tie the game. Vermette scored his first goal when he beat Anderson from the slot at 5:28. Vrbata then scored on the power play at 8:47 when he moved in from the point and beat Anderson short side with a shot that barely made it past teammate Martin Hanzal. Methot then gave the Senators the lead back with his goal at 14:51. Staal has missed the Hurricanes first 35 games after suffering a broken right fibula in the clubs second preseason game. He finally returned to the ice in early December and Carolina coach Bill Peters said on Sunday that he would be shocked if Staal did not play tonight. The 26-year-old Staal is set to finally kick off his third campaign with the Hurricanes since being acquired from the Pittsburgh Penguins and he posted 15 goals with 25 assists in 82 games last season. The first bit is always tough, watching your team when youre out, especially right at the beginning of the season when you dont get in a game, Staal said on Carolinas website. The initial shock sucks, but then its just putting your mind to getting back and focusing on that. Carolinas offense could certainly use the former first-round pick as the club ranks 29th out of 30 teams with just 2.00 goals per game. The Hurricanes have scored more than two goals only once in their last 13 games, so it comes as no surprise that they have lost nine of 11. The Canes were held under that mark again on Saturday, losing 2-1 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Andrej Sekera had the goal and Cam Ward took another tough-luck loss despite 36 saves. You have too score to win and we just having a hard time generating enough offense to win, Carolina forward Eric Staal said. Rodney McLeod Jersey. Against good teams its that one play or one goal that you need. For us, its tough finding that. Ward has a solid 2.42 goals against average and .913 save percentage in 24 games this season, but is just 9-13-2. He is 15-9-3 in his career versus Montreal with a 2.80 GAA and .910 save percentage. The Canadiens play the second of five straight on the road tonight and are in action for the first time since a 3-1 win over the New York Islanders last Tuesday. Carey Price ended with 37 saves, while Andrei Markov and Brendan Gallagher had second-period goals to erase a slow start for the club. David Desharnais added a third-period marker to seal the outcome. We didnt change anything system-wise, said Gallagher. I think we just started competing better. Markov, playing in his 800th career game, extended his point streak to five straight games while helping lead the Habs to their fifth victory in six games. The defenseman has a pair of goals and four assists over his run. Montreal will visit the Florida Panthers on Tuesday and Price is expected to start tonight. He is 11-5-2 with a 2.27 GAA and .930 save percentage in his career versus Carolina. The Canadiens have won three straight over the Hurricanes and are 6-0-1 in the previous seven meetings. LONDON -- Chelsea has signed St. Wayne Ellington Jersey . Etienne defender Kurt Zouma on a 5 1/2-year contract but he will remain on loan at the French club until the end of the season. The 19-year-old centre back has made 52 league appearances for the Ligue 1 team and scored four goals. Zouma has represented Frances youth teams and he was part of the group that won the Under-20 World Cup last year. Chelsea has already signed midfielder Nemanja Matic and winger Mohamed Salah in the January transfer window. Dion Waiters Jersey . - No matter the lineup or location, the San Antonio Spurs are rolling through the NBA again this spring, just the way they have for most of the last two decades. Glen Rice Jersey . -- The Chiefs have signed seven players to reserve/future contracts, including running back Joe McKnight, a former fourth-round pick of the New York Jets. http://www.heatteamofficial.com/tyler-johnson-heat-jersey/ .com) - Tony Parker scored 17 points to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a comfortable 99-85 win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.LOS ANGELES -- Shelly Sterling was reviewing bids from five groups interested in buying the Los Angeles Clippers, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press on Wednesday. The individual, who wasnt authorized to speak publicly about the deal, said if an agreement to sell is reached before next Tuesday, the leagues owners wouldnt meet in New York to vote on terminating Donald Sterlings ownership. The individual wouldnt specify the interested buyers, but described them as major players with considerable financial means. The person told the AP the sale price "appears to be increasing to an unbelievable number," and that it could soar past US$1.5 to $2 billion, and possibly more. Another person familiar with the negotiations said Shelly Sterlings lawyers, bankers and others involved in the process were in a locked room reviewing the bids, which were due by 2 p.m. PDT Wednesday. The individual wasnt authorized to publicly discuss the sensitive and competitive negotiations. Donald Sterlings lawyer, Bobby Samini, said there would be no sale of the team without Donald Sterlings involvement, though he declined to say whether Sterling was involved in reviewing bids or in touch with Shelly Sterling. "Mr. Sterling is an owner of the team, and there will be no sale of the team without his involvement," Samini said. But a May 22 letter obtained by The Associated Press and written by another one of Sterlings lawyers says that "Donald T. Sterling authorizes Rochelle Sterling to negotiate with the National Basketball Association regarding all issues in connection with a sale of the Los Angeles Clippers team." It includes the line "read and approved" and Donald Sterlings signature. NBA spokesman Mike Bass said the leagues advisory/finance committee met Wednesday by phone to discuss the separate responses from Donald and Shelly Sterling to the NBA on its efforts to terminate the Sterlings ownership of the Clippers. The first individual told the AP that the leagues owners know a sale couldnt be completed by next Tuesday. But if an agreement was in place, the NBA would give the Sterlings extra time before holding any meetings. The individual said the league hopes a voluntary sale would remove the potential of legal action being taken by the Sterlings. The person told the AP that at this point, with Donald Sterling saying he plans to fight the matter in court, the NBA intends to go forward with the meeting in New York on June 3. A forced sale would require approval by three-fourths of the leagues 30 owners. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has said he is confident he would get the necessary votes. On Tuesday, Donald Sterling issued a fiery response to the leagues attempt to oust him. The league charged that he had damaged it and its merchandising partners with his racist comments about blacks in a recording released last month. Edrice Adebayo Jersey. He argued that there is no basis for stripping him of his team because his statements were illegally recorded "during an inflamed lovers quarrel in which he was clearly distraught." According to the response, a copy of which was obtained by the AP, Sterling says girlfriend V. Stiviano recorded him without his knowledge, which is illegal under California law. He also said he could not have "wilfully" damaged the league because he did not know it would be made public. "We do not believe a court in the United States of America will enforce the draconian penalties imposed on Mr. Sterling in these circumstances, and indeed, we believe that preservation of Mr. Sterlings constitutional rights requires that these sham proceedings be terminated in Mr. Sterlings favour," the response said. Donald Sterling was banned for life and fined $2.5 million by Silver after the recording was made public. It is possible Shelly Sterling could complete an expedited sale of the team despite her husbands legal wranglings, according to Daniel Lazaroff, director of the Sports Law Institute at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. "She would have to be willing to go through with a sale that gave her absolutely no retained ownership interest in order to satisfy the league," said Lazaroff, a law professor at the school. "If she did that, I dont think the league would stand in her way. If she wants to retain any portion of ownership it wouldnt work." Even if Shelly Sterling accepts an offer, the league has the right to approve potential owners, a lengthy process that would almost certainly not be completed by next Tuesday. "The best case scenario is she finds a suitable buyer," Lazaroff said. "That would work for the league and from a financial standpoint that would work for the Sterlings. If the sale price is satisfactory, the smart thing might be to just get out. Hes a businessman who understands buy low and sell high." Donald Sterling purchased the Clippers for $12 million in 1981, making him the leagues longest-tenured owner. He argued in his response to the leagues charges that he cant get a fair hearing next week because the other owners have already made up their minds to oust him. Lazaroff noted that Sterling signed the NBAs constitution when he joined the league, and its bylaws spell out specific procedures for terminating ownership. He said as long as the league follows its own rules it should be on solid legal ground. "I could see a happy ending to this," Lazaroff said, "but it will depend on both of the Sterlings being out of the picture." CINCINNATI - The Reds extended general manager Walt Jockettys contract through the 2016 season on Saturday, giving him a chance to try to dig the franchise out of a disappointing year. Adam LaRoche Jersey .Jocketty was promoted to general manger in 2008. They reached the playoffs three times in four years under manager Dusty Baker, who was fired after the Reds lost the wild card game to Pittsburgh last year. The Reds had a lot of injuries and fared far worse this season under manager Bryan Price, who was promoted from pitching coach. They were 74-86 with two games to play on Saturday, their worst showing since 2008. Price also is under contract through 2016.Jockettys deal was set to expire at the end of the season. His status was the only major question that the team had to settle before heading into the off-season.This franchise has had great success under Walts guidance, and were delighted he has signed a 2-year extension, owner Bob Castellini said. The Reds fired Baker after they failed to advance past the opening round of the playoffs for the third time. Theyve kept the core of their team intact, hoping for a stretch of playoff appearances, but played themselves out of contention in the second half of the season.Jocketty didnt make any trades to improve the roster in July, when Cincinnati was a game and a half out of first place in the NL Central. The Reds could have used an upgrade to their struggling bullpen, a first baseman to fill in while Votto was out, and a right-handed hitter. The bullpen was 0-17 since the All-Star break heading into Saturdays game, and the offence had the fewest hits and runs in the majors over that span.First baseman Joey Votto has missed most of the season with strained muscles above his left knee. Second baseman Brandon Phillips missed time with a torn thumb ligament. Right fielder Jay Bruce was sidelined by surgery for torn knee cartilage.___Follow Joe Kay on Twitter: http://twitter.com/apjoekay Joe Crede Jersey . In the days leading up to the draft, TSN.ca and TSN Radio basketball analyst Duane Watson looks at some of the names that will be headlining the event. Tonight, Michigans Nik Stauskas of Mississauga, Ontario.MELBOURNE, Australia - The quarterfinalists on the bottom half of both mens and womens singles draws play at the Australian Open on Tuesday, with plenty of familiar faces and rivalries and minus a few stars. Here are some things to watch on Rod Laver Arena:____PARISIAN MEMORIES (No. 2 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 7 Eugenie Bouchard): Sharapova has beaten Bouchard all three times theyve played, including twice at the French Open over the past two years. Bouchard took the first set in last years semifinal at Roland Garros, but Sharapova came back to beat her and went on to win the title, her fifth Grand Slam singles championship. Bouchard made the semifinals at three Grand Slams last year, including a run to the Wimbledon final. Last year she had the most consistent in all the Grand Slams, Sharapova said. Shes playing really well, confident tennis, aggressive. I have a tough match ahead of me, but I always look forward to that. Bouchard recalls that semifinal in Paris well: I kind of just remember a grind, I didnt feel like I was playing great tennis the whole time. I remember I had chances and stuff, but I was pretty disappointed after. So thats motivating.___ROOF RAISER: (No. 6 Andy Murray vs. Nick Kyrgios): If inclement weather should force the roof to be closed on Rod Laver on Tuesday, this match could raise it. Kyrgios, who upset then No. 1-ranked Rafael Nadal in the fourth round at Wimbledon last year, has developed a reputation for his audacious types of shots and for his crowd interaction — he asked a couple leaving his fourth-round match where are you going? when they stood up in the stands. I definitely believe that I can do it, the 19-year-old Krygios said. Murray is 10-0 against Australian opponents but bristles at suggestions he might disappoint the Australian crowd on Tuesday if he beats the local hope. I plan on trying to beat Nick. Im not planning on trying to break anybodys heaarts, Murray says. Custom Chicago White Sox Jerseys. This is tennis. This is sport.___OLD MATES (No. 3 Rafael Nadal vs. No. 7 Tomas Berdych): Nadal and Berdych have played each other 21 times dating back to 2005, and Nadal holds an 18-3 edge. However, the last time they played in a Grand Slam tournament was at Melbourne Park in 2012, when Berdych forced Nadal to come back from a set down to beat him in four in the quarterfinals. Berdychs last win over Nadal came at the Madrid Masters on clay in 2006. Nadal has won their past 17 matches, so will be a big favourite on Tuesday. Berdych is remaining confident. Its been a great, great run so far, Berdych says. I just put myself in the best possible position right now ... Im going to have to add something extra again. Nadal thinks the stats should be thrown out the window. It doesnt matter what happened in the past. Is different story this time, says Nadal, who is still not 100 per cent fit from a right wrist injury and appendix surgery in November. Different moment for me; different moment for him. Halep beat Makarova in straight sets — the second in a tiebreaker — in 2013 at New Haven on hard courts in their only meeting. Halep is said to be one player who could threaten for a Grand Slam singles title soon, and Makararova agrees — Shes one of the greatest players now. Makarova made the quarterfinals at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2012, losing to Sharapova both times, and the fourth round last year, losing to eventual champion Li Na. SHANGHAI - Graeme McDowell typically looks at the leaderboard more often at the start of a tournament. Abdullahi Nura Jersey . It gives him a sense of how the course is playing and what score he might need to contend at the finish. There was no need to look Thursday in the HSBC Champions.McDowell noticed ankle-deep rough at Sheshan International and fairways not as wide as usual. He felt firm greens and saw trees jostling in stiff wind. More than anything, he kept looking at all the birdies that filled his scorecard.McDowell already had seven birdies when he finished his 12th hole, and a couple of loose mistakes at the end of the opening round didnt diminish his satisfaction. He opened with a 5-under 67 on a tough day in Shanghai to build a two-shot lead. No, I didnt need a leaderboard to let me know that 7 under through 12 is fairly strong, McDowell said. Gauging whats a good score can be a good thing maybe when youre not going well. But it might not be a great thing if youre taking it deep and the rest of them are 3-under par and youre thinking, Whoa, this is a very good score.Thats not what slowed him. Trouble was lurking everywhere, and not even McDowell was immune.Rickie Fowler also started quickly with three birdies in his opening five holes, only to spend the rest of the round trading birdies with bogeys. He wound up with a 69, along with U.S. Open champion Martin Kaymer, Brandt Snedeker, Chris Kirk, Tim Clark and Tommy Fleetwood.Strong wind added to the demanding conditions.Jordan Spieth began his new PGA Tour season with two straight bogeys and had to save par with a long bunker shot on his third hole. He scratched his way back and wound up in a large group at 70 that featured Lee Westwood, Ian Poulter, Adam Scott and Henrik Stenson, who made bogey from the bunker on his final hole.It didnt take much for players to stumble. FedEx Cup champion Billy Horschel made two double bogeys, only one birdie and shot an 80.This is a top event — some of the best players in the world, probably the best field youre going to get in Asia, and you dont want it to be a pushover, Fowler said. You want a good, solid test. And its showing that.Graham DeLaet of Weyburn, Sask. had to withdraw after shooting 45 through his first nine holes because of a neck injury. It’s his third withdrawl in the last four months. He also withdrew from Malaysia last week with a sore neck.Only 27 players in the 78-man field broke par, compared with 37 players under par on the first day last year when the winning score was 24-under 264. McDowell said he wouldnt be surprised to see something around 10 or 12 under win, even if the wind lets up.McDowell is the only player this year to finish in the top 10 at all the World Golf Championships, and while he hasnt captured a WGC title, Sheshan International would seem to favour him more than the others. Thursday was his 10th consecutive round in the 60s on this course.A big key to this golf course is driving the ball well. I drove it very well today, McDowell said. The exception was on the 603-yard eighth hole, playing with the wind. McDowell hit a 3-wood to avoid the bunker on the right side of the fairway, and he put it in the deep grass for the first time all day. He could only manage an 8-iron out of the rough and still had 215 yards over the creek fronting the green. McDowell pulled that left of the green and failed to get up and down.No complaints. He did not forget the 20-foot birdie putt he made on No. 14, or the 45-foot putt he holed across the green at the 17th, or the 25-foot birdie on No. 3. And then there was his drive on the 288-yard 16th, a perfect yardage to go with a perfect swing that gave him a two-putt from 15 feet for birdie. There were some tricky holes on the front nine, McDowell said. I made a couple of putts I should have in the first 12 holes, and then I made a couple of bogeys that I shouldnt have coming in. All in all, I think 5 under was a fair representation of my round.DIVOTS: Kevin Stadler withdrew after two holes with a wrist injury. ... Jason Dufner had one moment when his body was in China and his head was still in Malaysia. Players were allowed to lift, clean and place their balls last week in soggy Malaysia. Dufner instinctively picked up his ball in the 18th fairway, a one-shot penalty. He had a 72. Just one of those things, Dufner said with a shrug. Juan Jesus Jersey .C. The Barclays Premier League season is officially halfway through. [url=http://www.lionsfanspro.com/Black-Glover-Quin-Lions-Jerse

The Barclays Premier League season is officially halfway through. Glover Quin Jersey . No exaggeration, the season has been great thus far. A more unpredictable Premier League is better viewing. Competition at the top and bottom of the table remains fierce and ever-changing. League leaders Arsenal are on pace for 84 points. Fewer than 84 points has only won the league once in the last decade. The word parity is thrown around, and its not entirely accurate. Top teams are beginning to hit their stride, although every team continues to show flaws, making for a topsy-turvy table. There has been no shortage of talking points through 19 games. Before we get to our mid-season awards, lets go all High Fidelity. Here are the top five storylines at the halfway mark. 5) Methodical Mourinho: You love to love him and love to hate him. Its all more compelling with Jose Mourinho in the Premier League. Inspiring, entertaining football however from has been few and far between from his Chelsea team. Mourinho is Exhibit A in over-managing. His meticulous approach leads to a dull end product more times than not. Chelsea has been clinically stifling at times against top competition, in particular stuffing out matches against Arsenal and Manchester United. Free flowing football has been sacrificed to climb the table. Although its surprising a team with the financial wherewithal and talent of Chelsea need to resort to such mind-numbing tactics at times, Mourinho understands its what needs to be done until he can get his players at the club. Its been a Masterclass job thus far; Mourinhos teams are among the most consistent and competitive week to week. While team performance has been predictable, the notable persona of the Portuguese has not. Mourinho 2.0 has overall been more subdued than his previous tenure. The trademark arrogance and gamesmanship however remain omnipresent. Mourinhos leap into the Stamford Bridge crowd, sitting amongst the supporters after being sent to the stands, and interrupting post-match interviews are few examples the Mourinho of yester year is not far from the surface. As Chelsea close in on the top of the table, Chelseas tactics will become more dry and Mourinhos personality more rebellious. We all win with the latter. 4) Managerial Merry-go-round: Five managers were fired in the 2012/13 season. There have been six casualties already this campaign. Paolo Di Canio (Sunderand), Ian Holloway (Crystal Palace), Martin Jol (Fulham), Steve Clarke (West Brom), Andre Villas-Boas (Tottenham), and Malky Mackay (Cardiff City) are all no longer with their respective sides. The biggest shock has to be AVB. The young Portuguese is now a two-time Premier League failure. Its a massive let-down for a perceived tactically superior young mind in the game not being able to relate with the modern player, isolating individuals within the team and not getting the most out of the players at his disposal. Losing Gareth Bale was a blow for Spurs. But the finances spent and the talent on hand is capable of much more. AVB as a man manager will rightfully be questioned in his next gig. The unlucky loser of the unemployed bunch is Mackay. Playing a public chess match with tumultuous Cardiff City owner Vincent Tan was never going to be a battle won. When an owner operates on an island without rhyme and reason, the environment becomes poisoned and stability goes out the window. Mackay leaves with his head held high, despite his big money swing and a miss of striker Andreas Cornelius. Di Canio gets the nod for most warranted sacking. Who in their right mind would think 11 new players; most of marginal talent, at the Stadium of Light would be a recipe for success? And the audacity to stand before the travelling Sunderland supporters after a 3-0 loss at the Hawthorns provided pictures that will go down in infamy. 3) Golden Gunners: Arsene Wengers demise was widely predicted after a 3-1 home loss to Aston Villa to start the season. After the opening day loss, Arsenal reeled off a streak of 12 straight undefeated in all competitions, signed Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid, and brought Mathieu Flamini back to the Emirates. Meanwhile, talent became realized for Welshman Aaron Ramsey, Olivier Giroud showed his worth as a Premier League talisman and a resurgent backline has developed into one of, if not, the best defensive unit in the league. So much for Wenger losing the plot. Arsenal sits atop the table and on top form despite losing Theo Walcott, Lukas Podolski, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain as long-term absentees. You know things are rolling when goalkeeping is even top notch at the Emirates. The coming of age of goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has provided much needed stability. Is this Arsenal team good enough to be Champions? The starting XI is virtually set. January depth moves can be made up front and at the back. But it will inevitably be up to the current crop. They are a strong group. But are they capable of taking their game to the next level? 2) Sizzling Suarez: Its incredible what can change in a matter of four months. Luis Suarez has gone from a biting, erratic misfit to the most consistent performer and producer in the league. Suarez has more goals than seven Premier League teams, and his 19 are equal to the tally of Fulham. And all this has all come in just 14 games. Incredible. The Uruguayan also has five assists, making it sound bizarre to suggest his stats alone doesnt tell the entire story. He is a true game-breaker in a time where players of that dimension are rare. A constant threat, remarkable touch on the ball and extraordinary movement off it, Suarez has evolved into one of the worlds best. Liverpool has broken the bank to sign Suarez to a new mega contract. Ironically enough, it may be his own influence that determines whether he actually sees that contract out on the Merseyside. Its Champions League or bust. Suarez is key. 1) The noise about Moyes: Its the most talked about story and will continue to be. The start of the David Moyes era at Old Trafford has been shaky at best. But there are signs the team is turning the corner. While still lacking true top end talents en masse, the team as unit is playing much better football. Unfair to Moyes, a transition period within the team hit at the same time as the managerial change. This is no fault of Moyes. And to suggest it could all be remedied in his first transfer window was naïve. That doesnt excuse his panic purchase of Marouane Fellaini or the all too cautious approach in team selection/tactics to open the season. Manchester United is in the midst of a squad evolution. The process will continue in January. The knee-jerk, have-it-now nature of sport demands swift change. Moyes will get blamed or praised for whatever happens in the transfer windows. But this is more of a test to the Glazer ownership. Sponsorship acquisition has come fast and furious. The player side continues to lag behind, not moving in accordance with the clubs commercial growth. In the meantime, United on the field will have to continue to be their scrappy best. Theres something truly likeable about an underdog United team. Its been years since theyve been in such a role. Champions League qualification and lengthy runs in Cup competitions would be seen as a successful year. Next year, the stakes will be much higher. Mid-season Awards Top Player: Suarez (Liverpool) – Honourable mentions to Sergio Aguero, Aaron Ramsey and Wayne Rooney. But Suarez is the clear choice. Manager: Brendan Rodgers (Liverpool) – Year number two at Liverpool has exceeded expectations. The manager bemoans his lack of squad depth, and rightfully so. Yet his team, no matter the change in formation or personnel has managed to play an increasing prominent passing game with the ability to adapt in shape and approach appropriately to the occasion. The man deserves a lot of credit. Belief is back at Anfield. Best Goal: Pajtim Kasami (Fulham) vs. Crystal Palace – An ultimate team goal by Arsenal and Jack Wilshere was trumped later the same weekend by an all-time strike from Kasami. A run on full trot from the middle of the park, controlling with the chest and volley top corner on the run from a ridiculous angle at the top corner of the box wins it. Hands down. End of story. Memorable Moment: Asmir Begovic (Stoke City) goal vs. Southampton – It took just 12 seconds for the goalkeeper to score the shock goal of the season. The story goes it was a windy day, Begovic launched the ball from inside his own box, the ball landed between two Southampton centre-backs, Artur Boruc misjudged the big bounce and embarrassment ensued. Perhaps the most shocking variable was the goal made Begovic joint top goal scorer for Stoke at that time on the season. And the goal was scored in November, Surprise player: Seamus Coleman (Everton) – Roberto Martinez has struck gold with the Irish right back. His defensive play has been standout for one of the most dependable backlines in the league. Coleman has added five goals to his account. Thats more goals than he has scored in his Premier League career, one more than Christian Benteke and just one less than all of Chelseas strikers have scored combined. Surprise team: Hull City – many, including myself pegged the Tigers to go straight back to the League Championship. Instead, Hull sits 10th at the halfway point. They have beat Liverpool and Newcastle, were robbed against Spurs, and gave the two Manchester clubs a scare. This has all come from a team without top talent, a manager with a track record of Premier League failure, and a team garnering more attention for a potential name change than anything on the field. This is the feel good story of the league. Team Performance: Manchester City vs. Manchester United – Its one thing to win by a converted touchdown over Norwich City. Its another thing to run your neighbours and reigning Champions off the field in extraordinary fashion. The 4-1 final flattered United. It was truly a performance for the ages. Worst Owner: Vincent Tan (Cardiff City) – Mike Ashley is dethroned by a man who 1) changed the teams historic colours to the chagrin of club supporters, 2) fired his chief scout and hired his sons unqualified friend, 3) fired the popular coach, 4) has thrown the clubs reputation into disrepute. Not bad work for just four months. Well see how much further he goes, and how much higher his pants get in the New Year. Best XI: De GeaColeman-Jagielka-Mertesacker-SantonRamsey-Toure-HazardRooney-Suarez-Aguero Kenny Golladay Jersey .Y. -- The Montreal Canadiens have had few reasons to celebrate this season as they have been mired near the basement of the Eastern Conference. Prado stuck his glove down with Colorados Charlie Blackmon sliding into the bag, and quickly jumped back in pain after applying the tag. Yet there was little reason to celebrate Wednesday amid doubts about when or even if the remaining five venues will be ready in time for footballs showcase tournament in June. The Arena das Dunas in the northeastern city of Natal was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by FIFA Secretary General Jerome Valcke and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff, who took a symbolic first kick in front of a few thousand people. The event came a day after organizers admitted there is a serious risk the southern city of Curitiba might be dropped from the tournament because of lagging stadium construction. Brazils World Cup organizing committee admitted FIFA might have to consider reshuffling the tournaments matches, which would be an embarrassment for the country and disastrous for footballs governing body as more than 1 million game tickets have already been sold. "We know we had several warnings but it seems that these warnings were not taken seriously," Jose Maria Marin, the committees president, told reporters. "Its a difficult situation." Brazil promised to deliver all 12 World Cup stadiums by the end of 2013, but five are still under construction and at least two of those will not be ready until about two months before the tournaments June 12 start. One of those two is the Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo, which is supposed to host the World Cups opening match. In Natal, work was being done until the last minute before the inauguration of the Arena das Dunas, a 42,000-capacity stadium hosting four matches in the World Cups opening round — Mexico vs. Cameroon, Ghana vs. United States, Japan vs. Greece and Italy vs. Uruguay. The pace of stadium construction is likely to be on the agenda when Rousseff meets with FIFA President Sepp Blatter in Zurich on Thursday. The delay in building the Arena da Baixada in Curitiba is the biggest problem so far. FIFA and local organizers will make another evaluation there Feb. 18, but even if Curitiba is kept as a host city, the stadium isnt likely to be ready until a few weeks before the World Cup. "t;We cant believe in the worst. Ziggy Ansah Jersey. . On the contrary, I believe that the governor, the mayor and the entrepreneurs responsible for the stadium in Curitiba will have it ready in time," Rousseff said. "I have to bet in favour of that, not against." The Itaquerao stadium in Sao Paulo is where two workers were killed late last year when a crane collapsed while hoisting a huge roofing structure. It isnt expected to be done until mid-April. Officials say the three other unfinished stadiums will be ready before then, but the timing remains unclear. Organizers were hoping to have the first match at the renovated Beira-Rio stadium in the southern city of Porto Alegre on Jan. 29, but civil defence officials monitoring construction said Wednesday there might not be enough time to get everything ready by then. The Arena Pantanal in the wetlands city of Cuiaba was listed as 90 per cent complete going into January. The Arena da Amazonia in the jungle city of Manaus, where a worker fell to his death from about 115 feet (35 metres) up in December, was about 95 per cent ready. There also have been problems at some of the stadiums already completed. The roof leaks at the stadium in the capital of Brasilia, and there are concerns about the condition of its playing field. On Wednesday, FIFA inspectors recommended officials reduce the number of matches scheduled there before the World Cup to preserve the grass. Also Wednesday, Brazilian authorities announced that the 12 host cities will have integrated command centres to provide security during the monthlong tournament. The estimated $14 billion that Brazil is spending to put on the World Cup has been one of the targets of anti-government protests that erupted last year, and several times demonstrators clashed with police trying to reach stadium sites. On Wednesday, during the inauguration ceremony for the Arena das Dunas, nearly 300 demonstrators gathered outside the stadium to protest the tournaments cost, local media reported. Globo TV said some protesters vandalized a car. Associated Press writer Marco Sibaja in Brasilia contributed to this report. LOS ANGELES -- Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling apologized Sunday for racist comments captured on tape, saying they were a "terrible mistake. Travis Swanson Jersey ." "Im not a racist," Sterling told CNNs Anderson Cooper in excerpts posted from an interview taped Sunday and set to air Monday. "I made a terrible mistake. Im here to apologize." In his first public comments since being banned for life from the NBA, Sterling said years of good behaviour as an owner should count toward his future. "Im a good member who made a mistake," Sterling said. "Am I entitled to one mistake, am I after 35 years? I mean, I love my league, I love my partners. Am I entitled to one mistake? Its a terrible mistake, and Ill never do it again." The interview came nearly two weeks after NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling, fined him $2.5 million and urged the other league owners to force him to sell the team. Sterling said he waited to make a public apology because he was "emotionally distraught." "The reason its hard for me, very hard for me, is that Im wrong," Sterling said. "I caused the problem. I dont know how to correct it." He later added, "If the owners feel I have another chance, then theyll give it to me." Sterlings comments came on the same day ABC News posted excerpts of an interview his estranged wife gave to Barbara Walters. Shelly Sterling said she would fight to keep her 50 per cent ownership stake of the team. "I will fight that decision," Shelly Sterling said. "To be honest with you, Im wondering if a wife of one of the owners, and theres 30 owners, did something like that, said those racial slurs, would they oust the husband? Or would they leave the husband in? "I dont know why I should be punished for what his actions were." NBA spokesman Mike Bass released a statement Sunday night in response to Shelly Sterlings comments. "Under the NBA constitution, if a controlling owners interest is terminated by a three-quarter vote, all other team owners interests are automatically terminated as well," Bass said. "It doesnt matter whether the owners are related as is the case here. These are the rules to which all NBA owners agreed to as a condition of owning their team." Shelly Sterlings attorney, Pierce ODonnell, responded to the NBAs statement. "We do not agree with the leagues self-serving interpretation of its constitution, its application to Shelly Sterling or its validity under these unique circumstances," ODonnell said. "We live in a nation of laws. California law and the United States Constitution trump any such interpretation." ABC posted initial excerpts of Shelly Sterlings interview and planned to air the rest of it Monday. Shelly Sterling also said she "eventually" will divorce her husband, and that she hadnt yet done so due to financial considerations. "For the last 20 years, Ive been seeing attorneys for a divorce," she said. "In fact, I have here -- I just filed -- I was going to file the petition. I signed the petition for a divorce. And it came to almost being filed. And then, my financial adviser and my attorney said to me, Not now." LeBron James said Sunday after the Miami Heat practiced for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Brooklyn Nets that NBA players believe nobody in the Sterling family should be able to own the Clippers if hes gone. "As players, we want whats right and we dont feel like no one in his family should be able to own the team," James said. Zach Zenner Jersey . The eighth-seeded Swiss upset the world No. 1 star 6-3, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 at Melbourne Parks Rod Laver Arena, where the Spaniard labored mightily with a back injury on Australia Day. Trailing a set and a break, Nadal actually left the court for a medical timeout in the second set, only to return to a chorus of boos. The Grand Slam title is the first of Wawrinkas career, in his 36th major event, as he becomes only the second-ever Swiss to corral a major singles championship, joining the great Roger Federer, who was blown out by Nadal in a semifinal here on Friday. "Rafa, Im really sorry for you, I hope your back is going to be fine, youre a really great guy, good friend and really amazing champion," Wawrinka said during the trophy presentation. "Last year I had a crazy match, I lost it. I was crying a lot after the match. But in one year a lot happened -- I still dont know if Im dreaming or not but well see tomorrow morning." In the fourth and final set on Sunday, Wawrinka broke Nadal for a 4-2 lead, only to see the gritty Spaniard break right back to hang in there. Wawrinka, however, promptly broke Nadal again and then served out the bout on his first match point by swatting one final forehand winner. Wawrinka blew through the first set and was ahead in the second when Nadal first showed signs of a back problems, as a retirement looked like a real possibility at the time, with Nadal striking sub-80-mph serves. The Lausanne native Wawrinka was aggravated during Nadals medical timeout, demanding that officials tell him why the Spaniard needed the break. Wawrinka then aggressively finished off the second set before Nadal fought back in the third. Nadal saved break points to hold in the opening game of the third set and then broke Wawrinka and held for a 3-0 lead. He won the third set as Wawrinka started piling up some errors, with the Swiss appearing unable to handle the pressure of being in his first Grand Slam final. But Wawrinka composed himself once again in the fourth and ultimately cruised to victory. Thhe Swiss slugger prevailed in 2 hours, 21 minutes by firing 19 aces among his 53 winners (53-19) and tallying three more service breaks (5-2) than Nadal on Day 14. Ameer Abdullah Jersey. "He deserves to win the title," Nadal said of Wawrinka. "Im very happy for him, hes a great guy. "Im obviously disappointed and very sad about what happened. But thats life, thats sport. Ive really had a lot of great moments in my career. Thats a tough one. Just accept it and try to keep working hard for whats coming." Nadal has had a tough go of it with injuries at the Aussie Open. He missed last years edition during a seven-month layoff with knee injuries and illness, and his quarterfinal losses in 2010 and 2011 were affected by injuries. Wawrinka had been 0-12 lifetime against Nadal, including a round-of-32 Aussie Open loss in 2007, and had never taken a set off the Spanish great prior to Sunday. The 2009 champion Nadal was playing in his third career Aussie Open final (1-2) and second in three years. The 28-year-old Wawrinka appeared in his first career Grand Slam final. The 27-year-old Nadal played in his 19th career Grand Slam final overall (13-6), tying Ivan Lendl for second on the mens all-time list. Wawrinka will move up to a career-high No. 3 in the world on Monday after beating the top-two players in the world this week. He improved to 6-9 in his career finals overall, including 2-0 already in 2014, as he has yet to lose this year (10-0). The last player to beat the top-two seeds at a Grand Slam was Sergi Bruguera at the 1993 French Open. Nadal fell to 61-25 in his career finals, as he was trying to become the first man in the Open Era to win each Grand Slam twice. Wawrinka became the first player to beat both Nadal and Djokovic at a major event. The "Big Four" of Nadal, Djokovic, Andy Murray and Federer had won 34 of the previous 35 Slams. American legend and 14-time Grand Slam champion Pete Sampras was on the court for the trophy presentation Sunday. A win by Nadal would have tied him with Sampras on the mens all-time list. Wawrinka colleted $2.35 million for the biggest win of his career, while Nadal settled for $1.175 million. BARCELONA, Spain - Former Barcelona club president Jose Nunez has lost his final appeal against a court verdict that sentenced him to two years and two months in prison after being found guilty of bribing tax inspectors. Jordan Phillips Jersey .A court in Barcelona has ruled that the 83-year-old Nunez must enter prison in a period of 10 days after rejecting his appeal to remain free until the government hears his pardon request. The court says in a statement a request for pardon ... does not carry an automatic right to suspend the carrying out of a sentence.Nunez was found guilty of having bribed tax inspectors in 2011. The original sentence of six years was later reduced.Nunez was president of Barcelona from 1978-2000. He owns a construction company. According to a report from the Vancouver Province, the Lions are expected to replace former DC Rich Stubler with defensive backs coach Mark Washington.TORONTO -- Ryan Nelsen has been exactly where his players are, with several games to go in a disappointing season and seemingly nothing left to play for. "You feel like youre in this kind of limbo," said the Toronto FC coach and former longtime defender in Englands Premier League. "But in saying that you always take pride in your work and you always take pride in what you do." Toronto (4-14-11) hosts Sporting Kansas City (13-9-6) on Saturday, the first game since Nelsens squad was mathematically eliminated from MLS playoff contention, and the first of five games left in yet another season of dashed hopes. But Nelsen said his players still have something to prove as Torontos seventh season without a playoff appearance winds down. "Thats the time when everybody is watching and everybody is testing you," Nelsen said. "Its kind of easy to play in front of big crowds or in big games, but the real determining factor is away from home, small crowd, when no-one seems to be watching, thats really the test of character. "I learn more about them now than when were right amongst it next year." Torontos beleaguered team looks to end a seven-game winless streak Saturday, but Nelsen admitted there is the danger of players losing focus now that any glimmer of post-season hopes has officially been extinguished. "But I think the players see whats going on, they know whats around the corner and they all want to be a part of it," Nelsen said. "And they know by losing their focus, all that will be a backwards step towards where we want to go." The team made another major move Friday in hopes of improving its future fortunes, introducing Tim Bezbatchenko as its new general manager. At the other end of the MLS standings, meanwhile, a victory for Sporting KC will move the club even with the New York Red Bulls at the top of the Eastern Conference. New York plays FC Dallas on Sunday. Toronto will once again be dealing with injury concerns. Striker Robert Earnshaw will likely sit out the game with a hamstring injury, while midfielder Matias Laba is still out with a fractured big toe. Dutch forward Danny Koevermans, who has made just one start and four appeaarances this season as he battles back from a torn anterior cruciate ligament, could return to the lineup Saturday. Larry Csonka Jersey. Koevermans played 70 minutes in a reserve game last weekend, and did "really well," Nelsen said. "Hes been training really well. Hopefully Danny will be right and hopefully well see him on Saturday. If Danny Koevermans is fit, hell be involved," Nelsen said. The coach is being cautious with Bright Dike, Torontos newly acquired forward whos still on the mend from knee surgery. Dike played 15 minutes in Torontos 2-0 loss last week to New York, the match that officially ended the teams playoff hopes. "I know from a lot of experience with ACL injuries and recoveries, sometimes you can get a bit too greedy with them and this is time not to be greedy," Nelsen said. Defender Mark Bloom made his debut versus New York and played 90 minutes in place of an injured Richard Eckersley. The 25-year-old right back, who was acquired on loan in July from NASL club Atlanta Silverbacks, wasnt sure if he was in Nelsens plans for Saturday. "My job is to make it a hard decision on him," Bloom said. "You play in the lower leagues and the dream is to make that jump to MLS and for me getting this opportunity I feel very blessed to get that call, because not many guys do, even though there is a lot of talent in those leagues. It definitely is a great opportunity for me and I intend to take full advantage of it." The young defender had a tough task against crafty French striker Thierry Henry and the Red Bulls, but Nelsen was pleased with how Bloom fared in his Toronto debut. "Hes composed, hes a good athlete, hes very comfortable on the ball, he likes to defend, and wants to defend, and wants the ball, and hes an intelligent player as well," Nelsen said. "The more games you get the more confidence youre going to get and the more personality will come out of him as a player. "Mark did really well in that game, and yeah, its going to be a really difficult decision obviously because of how well he did and how well Richards been doing. But its a great decision to be made, Id like to have that at every position." Sergio Garcia believes time is still on his side to end his long wait for a maiden major victory. Frank Zombo Jersey . The Spaniard has posted 22 major top-10s in his career, including a share of fifth at both the US Open and Open Championship during 2016, but is still yet to win one of golfs big four.Garcia fell one stroke short of Tiger Woods at the 1999 PGA Championship and lost in a play-off to Padraig Harrington after letting a four-shot lead slip at the 2007 Open Championship, as well as finishing joint runner-up to Rory McIlroy at Royal Hoylake in 2014. Garcia has registered nine worldwide top-10s in 2016 The world No 14 has won on the PGA Tour this year and missed just two cuts in 19 starts in 2016, with Garcia confident of taking his consistency in to future majors. When you have a lot of misses theres obviously always a little dent in the bumper in your car, Garcia told Sky Sports News HQ. "Well over 50 (per cent)," coach Claude Noel said Tuesday after practice, where the Jets were looking at ways to cut down the scoring chances theyve been giving away. With injuries, lineup changes and other roster moves affecting playing time, it is important to keep your fantasy lineup up-to-date. Here are some under-the-radar players to take a look at to fill in the final spots on your team, as well as some who no longer warrant ownership. Take a look at… Kelly Olynyk (PF/C - Bos) – 28.7% owned: Olynyk has been the definition of peaks and valleys for his owners this season. He has struggled with consistency and playing time since being benched earlier in the season but he still remains valuable to owners as a big man who can knock down threes. With Jeff Green now gone, there aren’t many offensive options remaining on the Celtics aside from Olynyk. He may still come off the bench for now, but Olynyk will play a more important role for Boston going forward. Jusuf Nurkic (C - Den) – 22.7% owned: Now the starter in Denver after Timofey Mozgov was shipped to Cleveland, Nurkic’s upside should benefit his owners. While the sample size of two games is small, Nurkic looks to be an important part of a re-building Nuggets team that could see more veteran pieces moved out around the trade deadline. He is able to provide multiple blocks on a nightly basis, averaging 3.4 in his last five games, while remaining a double-double threat. His foul troubles are a problem, as he has picked up five-plus fouls in less than 22 minutes in five games this year. J.J. Hickson has been lurking off the bench, but Nurkic is the better option for now. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (SF - Cha) – 24.6% owned: Both Kidd-Gilchrist and Gerald Henderson have benefitted from the injuries of Lance Stephenson and Al Jefferson. While Kidd-Gilchrist shouldn’t be relied upon as a source of offence, he has scored in double digits in seven of his last eight games with a very good percentage. He won’t provide owners with much else aside from his rebounding ability, but those looking for boards from unlikely sources should snatch up the former second-overall pick. Hassan Whiteside (C - Mia) – 17.7% owned: He has been a revelation for the Heat as a big man off the bench and owners should enjoy riding Whiteside while he’s hot. Over his last five contests, Whiteside is averaging 12.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 3.2 bloocks while shooting a ridiculous . Mitch Morse Jersey. 725%. For a thin Miami frontcourt, Whiteside could continue to put up decent numbers. Until he comes back down to earth, he could be worth a look.< Maybe say goodbye to… Tristan Thompson (PF/C - Cle) – 42.8% owned: Thompson was a nice pickup for owners following the season-ending injury to Anderson Varejao but can now be dropped following the trade for Timofey Mozgov, who supplanted Thompson in the starting lineup in only his second game with the team. With the pending return of LeBron James and the stronger play of Kevin Love, don’t be surprised to see Thompson’s minutes decrease even further. He’s no longer worth owning. Jose Calderon (PG - NYK) – 24.9% owned: There aren’t many starting point guards available in Fantasy but Calderon should only be owned as a last resort. Once a reliable contributor for assists and field goal percentage, Calderon has struggled in both categories on an awful Knicks team. Despite the absence of many big names due to the injury bug, Calderon has not picked up the slack offensively. If it means anything to owners, he can still hit threes and has yet to miss a free-throw this season, but other than that it is tough to be attached to him. Harrison Barnes (SF – GSW) – 30.8% owned: By not being a focal point of the Warriors’ offence, Barnes has found himself with the inability to string together any amount of consistency. He has scored anywhere from two to 23 points over his last ten games, and his single digit outputs aren’t going to cut it for owners. He does provide decent rebounding for his position to go along with three-pointers and shooting percentage but owners can’t rely on him. Lance Stephenson (SG/SF - Cha) – 49.8% owned: The status of his pelvic injury seems to be improving but he remains day-to-day without a real timetable to return. His tantalizing ability to provide a balanced box score had been beneficial to owners but Stephenson hurt them with his poor field goal percentage. With the Hornets rolling, it remains to be seen what his role will be once he returns to the team. Those needing to free up a roster spot could drop Stephenson until more definitive updates on his return are available. The former owner of the Vancouver Canucks has been ordered to testify if he approved a career-ending sucker punch on Colorado Avalanche forward Steve Moore by forward Todd Bertuzzi. Custom Chicago White Sox Jerseys . Ontario Superior Court Case Management Master Ronald Dash released the decision on Monday, saying John McCaw Jr. must testify in front of a jury by live video conference. Moores lawyer, Tim Danson, asked the court to compel McCaw - who is based in Seattle - to testify in the case back on February 27. "Holding billionaire owners of NHL teams accountable for the corporate culture they set, and for what happens under their watch is a very important issue," said Danson in a statement on Monday. Its been over 10 years since Bertuzzis infamous hit, and Moores multi-million-dollar lawsuit is set to go to trial on Sept. 8. Danson said last month that NHL commissioner Gary Bettman and deputy commissioner Bill Daly have already voluntarily agreed to testify. McCaws lawyer, Steven Frankel, argued last month that the court doesnt have jurisdiction to do that and suggested Danson is trying to do an "end run" around very specific court rules. Frankel said there is no evidence before the court that McCaw, who is not an individual defendant, even has relevant evidence to give. A jury should be able to hear McCaw answer whether he knew Canucks players were gunning for retaliation against Moore for a hit weeks earlier on former Canucks captain Markus Naslund that resulted in a concussion, Danson argued. Bertuzzi has alleged the Canucks then-coach Marc Crawford urged his players to make Moore "pay the price," while Crawford has claimed Bertuzzi disobeyed instructions to get off the ice before Moore was attacked. Players were issuing public threats against Moore before the hit, Danson said, and what McCaw did or didnt do about it is "highly relevant to the question of negligence." "Theres no way that you can have the intensity of the public threats over three weeks going on unless the corporate culture set by Mr. McCaw allowed it, and he has to answer to that," Danson said. Danson suggested that McCaw fostered a corporate culture that may have at least implicitly approved such an attack, including having as the president and general manager Brian Burke, who was "unapologetic about promoting violence in hockey." "Were Burke and Crawford carrying out the wishes of McCaw?" Danson suggested. "Or given the wink...when it came to getting Mr. Moore?" McCaw no longer owns the Canucks, having sold his company Orca Bay, now known as Canucks Sports and Entertainment. But he maintains a "very significant financial interest" in the outcome of the lawsuit, as he is still on the hook for half of any liability found against the team, which Danson said was a condition of the sale. "If he doesnt testify, if he doesnt come forward, our case is going to be significantly weakened," Danson said. "So he knows its not in his best interest to testify because if he testifies, it will be....to the benefit of the plaintiffs." Moore is suing Bertuzzi and the Canucks for $38 million for a 2004 on-ice hit that left Moore, then a Colorado Avalanche player, with a concussion and three fractured vertebrae. Bertuzzi pleaded guilty to a criminal charge of assault causing bodily harm and was sentenced in 2006 to a years probation and 80 hours of community service. He also served a multi-game suspension from the NHL but has gone on to play for several other NHL teams, including currently as a forward for the Detroit Red Wings. Todd Frazier Jersey . "Weve given ourselves now a tougher task," said Carlyle after the Friday practice, the Toronto head coach notably chipper and upbeat throughout. "But the bottom line is we just have to win our share of games [and] not worry about what anybody else is doing. Jose Abreu Jersey . -- LeGarrette Blount made one last big splash into a soggy end zone. http://www.baseballwhitesoxofficial.com/authentic-carlos-rodon-white-soxjersey/ . -- Max Domi scored twice and set up two more as the London Knights toppled the visiting Kingston Frontenacs 6-4 on Sunday in Ontario Hockey League action.Richmond, VA (SportsNetwork.com) - Justin Andersons status heading into Saturdays game was questionable. He appeared fine on the court, however, and his performance spearheaded seventh-ranked Virginias 74-57 win over VCU. Anderson, who sprained his left ankle in Wednesdays win over No. 21 Maryland, missed the two days of practice leading up to the game, then scored 21 points with eight rebounds to lead the Cavs. Anthony Gill supplied 18 points and Malcolm Brogdon added 15 for Virginia (9-0), which has won 11 of its 13 all-time meetings with the Rams. Treveon Graham did all he could late for VCU (5-3), but his team-high 17 points was not enough to slow down Anderson and company. Melvin Johnson was the only other Ram in double figures with 15 points. Graham gave VCUs sputtering offense a jolt with three straight 3-pointers to help trim its deficit to 59-55 with 6:58 remaining. London Perrantes quelled Grahams little surge with a tough driving layup before Evan Nolte knocked down his first basket of the day, a deep three, as part of 15 straight for the visitors. Anderson also hit a 3-pointer during the run and Brogdon capped it with a trey from the top of the key as the Cavs won it going away. Alex Avila Jersey. Jordan Burgess two free throws ended a drought of 5:51 for the Rams to account for the final margin. Virginia did a nice job in the first half in breaking VCUs press. Because of that, coupled with stingy defense of its own, it built a 10-point lead at the break. Johnson cut the Rams deficit to 25-23 with over seven minutes remaining in the half, but the Cavs defense proved to be too much for the hosts to close the frame. Anderson followed Johnsons basket with a layup that jump-started a 13-5 run over the final 6:44. Virginia shot 64 percent from the floor in the opening 20 minutes and limited VCU to 35 percent shooting, taking a 38-28 lead at the break. Game Notes VCU took a 59-56 win over the Cavs last season in Charlottesville ... Gill and Mike Tobey each pulled down eight rebounds for Virginia ... Perrantes dished out nine assists in the win ... Virginia shot 28-of-41 for the game, including 6-of-11 from beyond the arc ... The Rams were held to 23-of-60 shooting and made just seven of their 24 attempts from deep ... VCU forced 16 turnovers. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Reds Canadian first baseman Joey Votto is recovering from a strained muscle above his left knee and could soon begin a rehabilitation assignment in the minors. Giannis Antetokounmpo Jersey . Votto, from Toronto, has been on the disabled list since May 21, trying to get rid of inflammation and to strengthen the muscle. He stayed in Cincinnati to get treatment on the leg while the team was on a seven-day trip. He was cleared to take batting practice with the team on Tuesday before the opener of a series against the San Francisco Giants. Rain washed out batting practice on the field, forcing players to hit indoors. Hes also going to take infield practice and run the bases the next few days. If he gets through that without a problem, he will start a rehab assignment. He and the team havent decided how many games hell need before hes ready to return. The Reds have gone 8-8 without him. "I feel really good, like I was before I got hurt earlier on in the season," Votto said. "So if I can get to good place, youre going to see a little bit more of the older version of me -- the younger version of me. Its one of these injuries that take a little bit of time." Votto is the 12th Reds player to go on the disabled list this season. The 2010 National League MVP is batting .257 with six homers and 12 RBIs in 39 games. The Reds are getting closer to having their lineup, rotation and bullpen back to full strength. Relievers Aroldis Chapman, Jonathan Broxton and Sean Marshall opened the season on the DL but have returned. Votto is the only regular position player still missing. Right-handed starter Mat Latos is scheduled to make another rehab start on Wednesday. If that goes well, he could be activated. Latos has been on the disabled list all season recovering from knee surgery and a strained forearm. The Reds opened their series on Tuesday with a 26-29 mark, in fourth place in the NL Central. They trailed Milwaukee by 7 1-2 games. "I think getting Joey back and possibly Mat Latos back in the rotation (soon) is definitely going to be a positive bump, not just for improving the 25-man roster but getting guys enthused that were close to being whole," manager Bryan Price said. "I think wed all be excited to see our club at full strength." John Henson Jersey . - Robert Griffin III has a sprained throwing shoulder that limited him in practice Wednesday as the Washington Redskins prepared for their season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. Spencer Hawes Jersey .Carla Fontes hadnt cut her hair since intermediate school, but her coach at Waiakea High School, Stan Haraguchi, thought the locks flowing below her waist were interfering with the sport. http://www.nbabucksproshop.com/Authentic-D-J-Wilson-Bucks-Jersey/ . Raonic, the No. 8 seed from Thornhill, Ont., fired 11 aces and did not have a double-fault as he comfortably advanced to the third round at the Masters Series event. It has been 10 years since Steve Moores NHL career ended with an attack by former Vancouver Canucks forward Todd Bertuzzi. The 35-year-old Moore says he still suffers from headaches and low energy, even if he feels better overall and wants to get on with his life. But there has been no closure for the former Colorado Avalanche centre, whose $38-million dollar lawsuit against Bertuzzi and the Canucks is still in the courts after numerous delays. A trial date has been set for Sept. 8. Moore, a rookie on a powerhouse Avalanche team, still remembers that game on March 8, 2004, and the devastating effect it had on his career. "I think about it at times like this," Moore said Friday in a phone interview with The Canadian Press. "When the anniversary comes around, its hard not to reflect on the impact this has had on my life, which is dramatic. "At the same time I think a lot about how grateful I am that this wasnt worse. Every time I watch it I have the same reaction other people have, which is shock and disgust. Its just a little stronger when its yourself youre looking at and when youre aware of everything that happened in the three weeks leading up to it -- the threats and all those things." It all started on Feb. 16, 2004, when Moore flattened Canucks captain Markus Naslund with an open ice hit that put Vancouvers scoring star out with a concussion but was deemed legal by the NHL. Major retaliation was expected. Vancouvers Brad May was quoted as saying there was a "bounty" on Moores head. But when the teams next met on March 3, with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman in the house, there were no incidents. The fireworks came in their March 8 game, a 9-2 Colorado win. Moore squared off against Matt Cooke in the first period, a fight that was considered a draw. It appeared that was the end of if. But things got nasty in the third frame. Moore was challenged again. He turned away. Bertuzzi skated up behind him, tugging on his jersey, then punching him from behind and falling on top of him as other players piled in. Moore lay motionless on the ice in a pool of blood before being stretchered off and taken to hospital. The diagnosis was a concussion and three fractured vertebrae. Bertuzzi was suspended for the rest of the regular season and the playoffs, which cost him about $502,000, and he didnt play during the 2004-05 lockout season. But he was reinstated for the 2005-06 campaign and has since continued his career, most recently with Detroit. He also pleaded guilty to a criminal charge of assault causing bodily harm and was sentenced in 2006 to a years probation and 80 hours of community service. There was also Bertuzzis tearful apology on television. But nothing could fully heal Moores wounds. After five years visiting the best specialists he could find, he was told he had made a remarkable recovery but none would give him clearance too play hockey again. Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Jersey. His career was over. "That was a very difficult time for me," he said. "It took a heck of a lot longer than I expected, but I was expecting to go back and I never thought about anything other than returning to play." He has since started the Steve Moore Foundation to help people with head and neck injuries. "Over the last few years, with the number of concussion injuries, especially with high-profile players, the public has been educated in a major way, but we still have a long way to go not just in making people aware of this, but in avoiding them and treating them," he said. While Moores foundation keeps him busy, he is also still dealing with the lawsuit, which could set a standard for determining responsibility for on-ice behaviour and injuries. Moore said the suit was not so much about the money as being compensated for the loss of his dreams. When Moore was injured, he was in his first full NHL season. He had five goals and seven assists in 57 games, but injuries had seen him move up from the fourth line to regular duty with stars like Joe Sakic and Paul Kariya. "I lost my entire career in my rookie year," he said. "I think any player put in that situation would do the same thing. "I cant recover anything else. I cant recover my career, the experience of living out my dream from the time I was two and half years old of playing in the NHL." He said the injury cost him all the good things about being an NHL player: rewarding himself and his family for the hours they put in to get him there, the chance to skate in the playoffs and maybe even win a Stanley Cup, or even the chance to be an inspiration to youngsters hoping to be in the league one day. "Everything I watched my peers go through the last 10 years," he said. "Ive watched the careers theyve had and I cant get any of that back." Bertuzzi has alleged the Canucks then-coach Marc Crawford urged his players to make Moore "pay the price," while Crawford has claimed Bertuzzi disobeyed instructions to get off the ice before Moore was attacked. Asked if he has forgiven Bertuzzi, Moore spoke instead of being frustrated at the repeated delays in the trial and the resistance put up by the opposing side in the lawsuit. "Im a very forgiving person," said Moore, who lives in Toronto with his wife and two small children. "Everyone saw what happened on March 8, 2004, but what they havent seen in whats gone on since then. "To me, its just been a continuation of what happened, just off ice and away from the cameras. Its not a situation that happened 10 years ago and its over and everythings been resolved and moved on. "Theres nobody that would like to move on more than me. Every day I try to move on, and I have moved on in other areas of my life, but this isnt over." Welcome to a very unique UFC Fight Night breakdown. Nolan Ryan Jersey . This event is going down May 10th in Cincinnati. The main event is a welterweight fight that will give the winner a huge step on the path to a title shot. This weeks Takedown pits me, Jordan Cieciwa (@FitCityJordan) against 11 year-old Gabriella McAlpine (@WebSodaGirl) on the picks. Gabriella (Gabzilla) McAlpine is one of the biggest fans of MMA out there. Creating a name for herself online by interviewing some of the biggest stars in MMA, shes someone to watch as she hits the mats and learns the sport herself. We invite you to get on twitter and join the battle. #TeamGabZilla or #TeamJC. Wed love to hear your picks and argue our decisions. Matt Brown vs. Erick Silva JC: Well, Im a fan of experience. That means in this one Ive got to go with Matt Brown. Hes 18-11, and on a six-fight win streak. Silva is 3-3. I believe Silva has the advantage when it comes to the ground game, but not when you take into account the striking. I dont see this going all five rounds. Matt Brown will get his KO. Gabzilla: I think Erick Silva will take the win. He is evenly matched as a striker but on the ground be is more technical and has finished more fights using grappling. Lorenz Larkin vs. Constantinos Philippou JC: Costas Philippou is one of those "never out of the fight" fighters. He hits a ton, and has the ability to stay on his feet. Lorenz Larkin is an excellent all-round fighter, but with the striking edge and toughness going to Philippou I think this night will end mid-second round with Philippou getting a solid KO. Gabzilla: I believe that Lorenz Larkin will take the win. This is an evenly matched fight that is so close on paper, but I have to give a slight edge to Larkin. Daron Cruickshank vs. Erik Koch JC: Erik Koch and Daron Cruickshank should be a barn burner of a fight. Im actually a huge Koch fan and he gets the wins any way he can. Hes a great all-around athlete and if his striking isnt working he can take this to the ground. Cruickshank is an aggressive fighter. I think its going to be his downfall. Im expecting Koch to end this in the third round with a submission. Gabzilla: This is another very evenly matched fight. But my pick is Cruickshank, the Detroit Superstar, because of his striking, aggression and takedown defence. Neil Magny vs. Tim Means JC: Tim Means should end this night with a decision win over Neil Magny. I dont see this one ending before we reach the end of three rounds, but Means has the experience and striking skill to make sure he wins this one. Gabzilla: I will have to give it to Tim Means because of his record. He is so much more experienced in MMA with a 20-5-1 record as opposed to Magny with only a 9-4 record. Means has great hands and I think that will dictate the fight. Soa Palelei vs. Ruan Potts JC: If you have been watching heavyweight MMA then you know that the Australian heavyweight Soa Palelei is the real deal. I never count a fighter out, however, Ruan Potts just does not have what it takes to survive a Palelei striking onslaught. Expect an aggressive first round KO. Gabzilla: Hands down I think that Soa Palelei will win by KO. Based on experience, his striking capabilities and aggression. Tim Tebow Jersey . "I had a pretty good year," the soft-spoken Granberg told TSN.ca with a grin from the teams annual rookie tournament in London. A fourth-round selection in 2010, Granberg is worth keeping an eye on with NHL training camps rolling around in less than a week. The six-foot-two, 200-pound defender may not possess the wow-inspiring theatrics of fellow prospect Morgan Rielly, but nonetheless has a chance to contribute with the Leafs when all is said and done this season. Tug McGraw Jersey . Signs of a turnaround have emerged in this series at Minnesota. Brian Roberts had three doubles and a triple for the first four-extra-base-hit game of his 14-year career, and the Yankees used their bullpen to preserve a 6-5 win over the Twins on Friday. http://www.metsbaseballauthentic.com/mookie-wilson-mets-jersey/ .com) - Quarterback Cardale Jones will return to Ohio State next season.LA ROCHE-SUR-YON, France -- Richard Gasquet and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both won in straight sets to give France a commanding 2-0 lead against Australia in their first-round Davis Cup tie on Friday. The ninth-ranked Gasquet had little trouble beating teenager Nick Kyrgios 7-6 (3), 6-2, 6-2, and the 10th-ranked Tsonga followed up just as emphatically to dispatch Lleyton Hewitt 6-3, 6-2, 7-6 (2) and improve to 4-0 in head-to-heads against the former two-time Grand Slam champion. "They were two very good matches," France captain Arnaud Clement said. "They did what they had to do and played the right way." Gael Monfils is scheduled to play alongside doubles specialist Julien Benneteau against Hewitt and Chris Guccione in Saturdays doubles, where a win will seal Frances place in the quarterfinals against Spain or Germany in April. But Clement may change his players around. "Everythings possible for tomorrow," he said. "I have a little idea." Australia captain Pat Rafter said France "were too good" and that "Jo played very well." Tsonga saved a break-point in his opening service game, before breaking Hewitt in the sixth game with a backhand winner. Tsonga took both of his break-point chances in a tight second set, and both players saved two break-points each in the third. "He was fighhting right until the end, even though I dominated the first two sets," Tsonga said. Kevin Long Jersey. "Im happy to have played well and to give France the second point. Ive been playing very well for a while now. I didnt have much luck at the Australian Open because I came up against a very good Roger Federer." Gasquet was a heavy favourite against a player ranked 162nd, but the 18-year-old Kyrgios competed well in a tight first set where neither player offered a chance on their serve. "Hes a good player with a big serve and a big forehand," Gasquet said. "He has a lot of determination and hes very young, too, so I wasnt very at ease in the first set. I could have lost that tie-breaker and you never know what can happen after that." He broke Kyrgios serve twice in the second and third sets and clinched victory on his third match point when Kyrgios backhand down the line landed just wide. "The first set was really important for me and then I felt better and then my backhand started to work better," Gasquet said. "Its my best shot so if I want to win games it has to function properly." It is the first meeting between the nations since the 2001 Davis Cup final in Melbourne, which France won for its ninth and last title. Australia has an impressive 28 titles but none since 2003. Arsène Wenger

Arsène Wenger may face an FA Authentic Matt Ryan Jersey charge after saying Raheem Sterling “dives well” and criticising the referee, Michael Oliver, in Arsenal’s 3-1 defeat at the Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Wenger claimed City will be unstoppable if they receive similar decisions to those that allowed Sergio Agüero’s penalty and Gabriel Jesus’s goal in Arsenal’s defeat at the Etihad Stadium. In response Pep Guardiola hit back, claiming Arsenal defeated Burnley 1-0 last October at Turf Moor thanks to a late Laurent Koscielny goal scored with a hand.

City were leading 1-0 when Oliver awarded a penalty for Nacho Monreal’s challenge on Sterling after 50 minutes. Agüero scored and, http://www.officialphilliesshops.com/WOMENS-NICK-WILLIAMS-JERSEY.html although Alexandre Lacazette pulled one back just after the hour, Silva created Jesus’s 74th-minute strike despite being marginally offside.
The victory maintained City’s unbeaten start to the season, giving Guardiola’s team 31 points from 11 games. Yet the officiating that allowed Agüero’s penalty and Silva to continue playing left Wenger furious.
“I believe it was no penalty. We know that Raheem Sterling dives well, he does that very well,” he said. “And the third goal was offside. I am very upset because at 2-1 we were in the game. The third goal was the killer and it is not Authentic Matt Ryan Jersey by coincidence that mistakes always go for the home team, as we know.
“It is unfortunate that the game finished the way it finished. I am disappointed. You can accept it if City win in a normal way, they are a good side, but this is unacceptable. Last season we lost two http://www.authenticnikefalconshop.com/matt-ryan-jersey-for-sale-c-8.html offside goals and it has http://www.officialauthenticshoppanthers.com/WOMENS_YOUTH_TRAI_TURNER_JERSEY.html happened again.”
Asked who may be able to stop City, Wenger was again scathing. “It will be difficult this season, the way they have started, the quality they have, but you never know. If on top of that they have decisions at home like that, they will be unstoppable,” the Frenchman said.
“You have seen what I have seen. The fact you tell me it is an offside goal says enough. I don’t want to take anything away from the quality but it happened at a moment Authentic Matt Ryan Jersey when we were really in the game at 2-1 and it killed the game. It is the second year. We got two offside goals here last year [in a 2-1 loss] and one this year.
“The physical level [of referees] is very good, the decisions – at 2-1 we are in the game and he gives a key offside goal, and that kills the game for us. Last year if you look as well, we conceded two offside goals. Of course, they are a top team, but that makes it even more difficult for you.”
Wenger’s claim that Sterling simulates leaves the manager open to a potential FA charge as it questions the integrity of the player. Guardiola brushed off the comments. “No, we won,” said City’s manager. “We won in the best way and we deserved [to win] by far. The chances we created and the few chances we conceded. They tell me it was offside and I don’t like to win in that way, so it’s like this, but sometimes Arsenal win in Burnley 1-0 with a hand, so sometimes it is like this. The way we like to play, we did it really well,” he said.

Things got a little nasty this week in the Arizona Diamondbacks camp when general manager Kevin Towers fired a couple of the tea

Posted in IYH Forums by jokergreen0220 at 08:35, Nov 07 2017

Things got a little nasty this week in the Arizona Diamondbacks camp when general manager Kevin Towers fired a couple of the teams coaches, including pitching coach Charles Nagy. Chris Baker Jersey . It didnt end there. Towers, during a radio interview, slammed his pitchers for not executing "eye for an eye" justice by not hitting opponents with the pitches after their own players had been plunked. Towers added that he wanted a pitching coach with more fire who would convey the message that the Dbacks pitchers had to have more "fire in their bellies" and do a better job of protecting their teammates. That made me wonder if there is any correlation between pitching staffs hitting batters and those teams making it into the postseason. This season, for instance, Pittsburgh lead the Majors in hit batters with 70 and made it to the Wild Card game before losing the division series to St. Louis in 5. Cincinnati was second with 66 and lost the Wild Card game to the Bucs. The Central-winning Cardinals hit 64 batters. The top American League team was Texas with 65, and the Rangers made it to the tiebreaker game where they lost to the Rays. Arizona, surprisingly, fits in right after that with 60; which is a bit surprising considering what Towers had to say. I suppose he was just more than a little upset that his team led the NL West early, only to see the Dodgers overcome a horrible start and go shooting past them to win the division. L.A only hit 43 batters while the other National League playoff team, Atlanta, nailed 51. In the American League, after Texas, Cleveland hit 58 and then the numbers drop off from Tampa Bay at 52, Boston 47, Detroit 42 and Oakland just 35. A year ago, Towers had two of the top pitchers in hitting batters - Ian Kennedy with 14 and Trevor Cahill with 11 - but this year he wound up trading Kennedy to San Diego. You dont have to hit batters to be effective but you cant be afraid to pitch inside either. Clevelands Justin Masterson certainly qualifies. He led the Majors with 17 hit batsmen this season. The Tigers feisty right hander Doug Fister was second with 16. Interestingly, the Blue Jays two winningest pitchers also plunked the most. R.A Dickey with 10 and Mark Buehrle with nine, accounting for a combined 38 per cent of the Jays hit batters. If you look at the all-time career list, Gus Wehhing - who played the bulk of his career in the 1800s -leads the way with 277. Randy Johnson tops the modern era and is fifth overall with 190. Based on my perceptions growing up, I would have pegged Don Drysdale and Bob Gibson as being near the top of the list, but Drysdale checks in at number 18 with 154, while Gibson may be the most intimidating and greatest pitcher I ever saw was only tied for 79th place with 102. The biggest surprise name on the list was 38-year -old Jamie Wright whos still pitching out of the Rays pen with 151. Hes number 19 all-time. If you dont count Roger Clemens, the highest ranking Jays pitcher is Dave Stieb who nailed 129 batters. Thats good for a tie for 37th place and 37, of course, just happens to have been his number. A certain synchronicity to that, I guess. Watching all of these brilliant young pitchers in the postseason, you wonder what might have been if one had landed with the Blue Jays. In the 2011 June draft, the Blue Jays had no chance to get Gerrit Cole, as he went number one overall to the Pirates. The one who may turn out to be the best pitcher in that draft, Jose Fernandez, went number 14 to the Marlins while Sonny Gray, who starred for the As down the stretch and into the postseason, went 18th overall. The Blue Jays chose Tyler Beede at 21, but then were unable to sign him as he chose the college route. The 2012 draft is a little more frustrating. The Blue Jays opted for outfielder D.J Davis at number 17 and while he may turn into a solid Major Leaguer, St. Louis at 19 grabbed right hander Michael Wacha out of Texas A&M. The Jays took hard throwing right hander Marcus Stroman at number 22. Though he could start next year at Triple "A" Buffalo, he could appear with the big club at some point next year. Although the draft order could change a bit after all the free agency wheeling and dealing in the off season, right now, the Blue Jays will pick ninth overall in 2014 and also at number 11 (compensation for not signing their first round pick in 2013, right hander Phil Bickford at number 10). This could be the Jays most important draft in a decade, especially when you consider the average age of their pitching staff this season was 30.9 years old second eldest in the Majors behind the Yankees at 31.8. Dr. Bill Meyers in Philadelphia performed the operation on Verlander, who is expected to need six weeks of rehab before being evaluated again. The first workout for Detroits pitchers and catchers at spring training is scheduled for Feb. 14. The first spring training game is Feb. 25 against Florida Southern. "We fully anticipate Justin to participate in spring training and be in a position to compete at the beginning of the 2014 season," general manager Dave Dombrowski said in a statement. The team did not identify the "core muscle" that was repaired, but called the surgery successful. Verlander turns 31 on Feb. 20. The Tigers said Verlander hurt himself at the end of December. There was also a message posted on Verlanders Twitter account: "Thanks for the support regarding my surgery today," it said. "It went well and now my only focus is to get ready for 2014! .deetermined" Verlander went 13-12 last year with a 3. Clinton McDonald Jersey. 46 ERA for the AL Central champions. He has been Detoits opening day starter for the last six seasons, the longest active streak by any player with one team, according to STATS. If Verlander isnt at full strength for Detroits regular-season opener against Kansas City on March 31, the Tigers do have Max Scherzer, the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner. One of Verlanders biggest assets is his durability. The right-hander has thrown at least 200 innings in seven consecutive seasons. Verlanders surgery was performed by the same doctor who operated on Detroit teammate Miguel Cabrera after the slugger was limited down the stretch last season by a tear in his groin. Two years ago, the Tigers lost designated hitter Victor Martinez for the entire 2012 season after an off-season injury. Martinez hurt his knee. Verlanders injury does not appear to be nearly as serious, but the Tigers now enter the 2014 season with two of their biggest stars coming off surgery. Ralph Krueger is trading in sports. A. J. Cann Jersey . The former Edmonton Oilers coach has been named the new director of Southampton. Most recently acting as an consultant to Steve Yzermans gold medal-winning Canadian Olympic hockey team in Sochi, Krueger, who also coached the Swiss national team, has no previous experience with soccer at any level. "This is the start of a new world for me," Krueger told BBC Sport. One thing Krueger doesnt intend to do is meddle in manager Mauricio Pochettinos on-pitch affairs. "Ive got to come in gently. We dont need sudden changes of direction. What Mauricio doesnt need is someone getting involved day-to-day," Krueger said. "He and his staff need space so they can continue to grow the group. Ive met Mauricio; hes very honest, a strong personality and he has strong values. I will stay in my place. He should feel comfortable." Though inexperienced in the soccer world, Krueger has a wealth of sports experience that he hope can translate outside of hockey. In 2011, Krueger was appointed a member of the World Economic Forum and has been key in the development of new leadership models. "My strengths are sport-specific on the hockey team-building side, but other strengths are on the leadership side," said Krueger, who coached the Oilers last season. "We need to take the whole leadership side to a different level." Saints currently sit ninth in the Barclays Premier League table and are next in action on Saturday when they host Liverpool. They arrived home in Pittsburgh at 3:33 a.m. Friday after the second game of their doubleheader with the Baltimore Orioles went into extra innings. The Pirates appeared on their way to playing another late one Friday night when Pedro Alvarez hit a tying two-run homer off Sergio Santos in the ninth. But two batters later, Starling Marte followed with a winning drive into the bullpen in left-centre, giving the Pirates a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays. Manager Clint Hurdle, who moved Marte from batting leadoff to the seventh spot in the lineup Thursday and six-hole Friday, hopes the win can get his players and team some "traction." "Its been a while since Pedro has been able to ride one out of the ballpark," Hurdle said. "Martes at-bats have gotten bigger, none bigger than that one. Those kind of at-bats can create a spark, create more momentum and more traction." Marte knew the ball was gone as soon as he hit it. "Thats what I want," Marte said. "No matter what spot I hit in." Santos (0-2) entered with a 5-3 lead and allowed a leadoff single to Neil Walker. He struck out Andrew McCutchen, and Alvarez followed with his seventh homer this season. Pinch-hitter Ike Davis flied out, and Marte hit the first game-ending homer of his big league career. Alvarezs homer broke a two-week home run drought for the third baseman who led the National League last season. "Obviously, (hitting the home run) feels really good," Alvarez said. "It kept us in the game, but of course anytime I can get a clutch hit for the team, to contribute to a W, its huge." Mark Melancon (1-1) pitched a hitless ninth for the win. After converting his first four save chances this season, Santos has blown three of his last four for the Blue Jays, who have lost seven of their last nine games and continue to have issues in the bullpen. "We played such a great game today and it stinks to blow it," Santos said. Toronto manager John Gibbons noted the injuries to reliever Casey Janssen and Dustin McGowan as aspects that have hindered the Blue Jays performance at the end of games. Brandon Linder Jersey. "Its a totally different look and I think were suffering for it," Gibbons said. "But the game doesnt let you up." McCutchen had three hits for Pittsburgh, which outhit the Blue Jays 17-10. The Pirates won for just the third time in 13 games and the fifth time in their last 20. Pirates starter Gerrit Cole allowed four runs and seven hits in five innings, failing to reach the sixth for the first time in six starts this season. Cole said he was "a little off" Friday night. "I wasnt executing a handful of pitches there," Cole said. "They beat me on some good pitches." Torontos Brandon Morrow gave up three runs and 11 hits in five innings. After walking eight batters in his last start, Morrow walked just one Friday. "I just forgot about that and went out and threw the way Id been throwing before that," Morrow said. "I wasnt thinking about that and I dont think it was strange to come out and have good command today." In his first at-bat in Pittsburgh since 2008, Jose Bautista hit a two-out double in the first and scored on a double by Edwin Encarnacion. Pittsburgh took a 2-1 lead on Jordy Mercers run-scoring, double-play grounder in the second and McCutchens RBI single in the third. Colby Rasmus hit his sixth homer of the season in the fourth, a two-run drive, and Bautista had an RBI double in the fifth that made it 4-2. McCutchens run-scoring single cut the deficit in the bottom half, but Toronto regained a two-run lead in the sixth on pinch-hitter Steve Tollesons run-scoring, two-out triple off Justin Wilson. Hurdle was keen not to forget about Casey Sadler making his major league debut Friday night. Sadler pitched two scoreless innings, gave up a hit and struck out one. "He was able to come in and keep the game right where it was," Hurdle said. "Not to be lost in everything else that went on because he kept it right there at a two-run deficit." NOTES: Bautista has a 12-game hitting streak and has reached based in all 29 games hes played this season. ... Toronto knuckleballer R.A. CALGARY -- The San Jose Sharks got two points they deserved Tuesday night while the Calgary Flames got one point they probably didnt. Teddy Purcell Jersey . In an odd game that was way closer than it should have been, San Jose won 3-2 on Brad Stuarts goal 1:13 into overtime. Stuart jumped up in the rush, drove the net and had Joe Thorntons shot deflect sharply off his elbow and past Reto Berra for the winner. "Its been a long time since Ive had an overtime goal," said Stuart. "It wasnt pretty but Im not going to tell anybody how it went in, it just went in." San Jose dominated play throughout the game, outshooting Calgary 35-13, yet werent able to put the game away. "Weve had a lot of close games and just havent been able to finish it," said Stuart. "Tonight, we let them back in it and we shouldnt have but for us to get the points, itll be a good positive for us moving forward." From the start of the game, Calgarys trademark work ethic was absent and that was a source of frustration for the coaching staff. "That was the biggest spanking that weve taken in the first period," said Flames coach Bob Hartley. "We didnt touch the puck. The only way that we could have touched the puck is if we would have had two pucks out there." San Jose got a goal from Logan Couture on its second shift of the game and then a power-play goal from Patrick Marleau in the final minute, taking a 2-0 lead in a period in which they outshot the home side 17-3. "In the first period, we didnt see our team at all," Hartley said. "I asked (assistant coach) Marty Gelinas, should I change my lines and he said yes. I started looking and I couldnt find three guys that I felt that had decent energy." Down 28-6 on the shot clock after 40 minutes yet only down 2-0 thanks to Berra, Calgary finally got enough going in the third to rally back and tie it. Calgarys comeback bid began when it got its first power play of the night six minutes into the period. The Flames would need just five seconds to convert. Rookie Sean Monahan cleanly won a faceoff from Thornton, pulling the puck back to Kris Russell and the Flames defenceman ripped a slapshot past Sharks goaltender Alex Stalock. The goal snapped a 0-for-30 drought on the power play for Calgary that had lasted nine games and covered more than 54 minutes. Less than four minutes later, Mike Cammalleri tied it on a backhand at 10:25, setting off a deafening roar from the sell-out Scotiabank Saddledome crowd, announced at 19,289, who until the third period had very little to cheer about. But that momentary surge would be the long bright spot on the evening for the Flames, who were kicking off a three-game homestand. "Were all proud people and thats been something from day one, weve been a team that played with pride and we dont want to be beat, playing in games where our shot totals look like that," said Cammalleri. "I dont see any moral victories in that." After missing the first seven games with a hand injury, the pending unrestricted free agent leads the Flames with eight goals in 11 games. "In the third, we were desperate and I felt that we saw our good old team again but all that said. If not for Reto Berra, the Sharks can get on the plane after the first period and theyd already have the two points," said Hartley. San Jose (11-2-5) snaps a five-game winless skid, although in a similar way to Tuesdays result, it was misleading. During the span, they had three shootout losses and one loss in overtime. "Weve been playing good hockey, we just havent been winning shootouts. To get the full two (points), its finally nice," said Thornton. "We had two hiccups but we played good tonight. Thats how we need to play every night." Calgary (6-9-3), kicking off a three-game homestand, is winless in its last four. Berras record falls to 1-2-1 while Stalock continues his unusual distinction of having won more games than he has started in his brief NHL time. He won his NHL debut in relief on Feb. 1, 2011. Replacing Antti Niemi halfway through the second period with the Sharks down 3-0 to Phoenix, he made nine saves as San Jose rallied back to beat the Coyotes 5-3. In his first NHL start just over two weeks ago, it was a much busier evening as he was peppered for 40 shots in San Joses 5-2 win over the Ottawa Senators. "The other guy played pretty good. He saw a lot of rubber and played a heck of a game for them," said Stalock, the 26-year-old from St. Paul, Minnesota. "On my end, it was pretty quiet for two periods. It was a little tougher. Youve got a lot more time to think about the next puck than just reacting." Notes: Ladislav Smid made his Flames debut, playing 16:50... Lee Stempniak (broken foot) returned to Calgarys line-up after missing seven games... Scratched for the Flames were forwards Tim Jackman and Max Reinhart, as well as veteran D Sean OBrien... San Jose made two line-up changes: Stuart returned after sitting out a game and C John McCarthy was inserted... VAL DISERE, France -- Two-time defending World Cup champion Marcel Hirscher limited his celebrations Saturday after dominating the treacherous Stade Olympique de Bellevarde course to win a giant slalom race. D Onta Foreman Jersey . The Austrian produced a superb second run to win his third career giant slalom race and fourth overall at Val dIsere. However, Hirscher was disappointed that Ted Ligety did not finish. The American, seeking his fourth straight win in GS, made an uncharacteristic technical error and was among several racers to ski out and failed to qualify for the second run for the first time in nearly five years. Hirscher would prefer to measure his performance against Ligetys to see where he stands in GS terms. "Its a great victory for sure. But we dont know where we really are right now," Hirscher said. "Was it a really good run from us or is Ted skiing better than the rest of the world right now? Thats the question." It was Hirschers second win of the season after his slalom victory at Levi, Finland, and fourth podium from five races so far. His Val dIsere record is superb, and he will go for his eighth career podium at the French Alpine resort in Sundays slalom. "Im not the heaviest, largest guy in the World Cup. For me its easier to get the speed if its steep," Hirscher said. "I think its the steepest of the World Cup tour. I dont think Ive ever skied really bad here." With little snowfall in the past couple of weeks, the course was even more difficult. "It was definitely the toughest slope preparation Val dIsere has ever done," Hirscher said. "Normally it is a bit colder and the slope is not injected with so much water, so it is a kind of ice skating place." Hirscher was third after the first run, 0.41 seconds behind Frenchman Alexis Pinturault, but finished 0.76 seconds ahead of Thomas Fanara of France and 1.09 clear of Germanys Stefan Luitz. The Bellevarde course lived up to its tough reputation as Ligety, Norwegian Aksel Lund Svindal and Bode Miller of the United States failed to finish their first runs. Miller got his skis tangled near the bottom and tumbled over. U.S. mens head coach Sasha Rearick said Miller was unlucky. "Today he got his outside ski caught right at the initiation of the turn in the flat light. Those things can kind of happen," Rearick said. "I was proud of the effort he put in today and the way he approached the hill." Both Miller and Ligety will take part in Sundays slalom. "Looking forward to it," Rearick said. "Get some revenge on Val dIsere." The 24-year-old Hirscher won the same race at Val dIsere last year and also finished third in the slalom. "I have to train pretty early in the morning," he said. "I know exactly what I have to do tomorrow. Im looking forward to it." His winning margin would have been even larger, but he made a slight error halfway down as he veered to the left before managing to straighten his skis. The pressure was on Pinturault to respond and he started well enough, .28 back on first split, but lost speed at the bottom to finish fourth. Ligety won the GS at Soelden, Austria, and Beaver Creek, Colorado but ended up missing a gate turning in from the left side, going down on his hip and out of a first run for the first time since February 2009 at Sestriere, Italy. "Its been a few years. But Ive had a bunch of races where (on) second runs I went out," the 29-year-old Ligety said. "Just a little bit (of) bad luck on my part today." The four-time defending World Cup GS champion does not count the Bellevarde among his favourite courses. "Its always super, super bumpy and miserable to ski so I wasnt surprised by that at all," Ligety said. Svindal, an Olympic bronze medallist in the discipline, lost his balance approaching a gate from the right, missed the next gate and almost toppled over as his right foot lifted off the ground. Both of Luitzs World Cup podiums have been at Val dIsere. The 21-year-old German was second last year, before facing a cruciate knee ligament injury in February. "To be on the podium 10 months after an operation is unexpected, its a great comeback," Luitz said. CHICAGO -- Ryan Kalish wants to make the most of his opportunity with the Chicago Cubs. Kalish got his first hit since Sept. 11, 2012, when he rapped an RBI triple in the first inning Sunday in the Chicago Cubs 8-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. He also had a two-run double and drew two walks as the Cubs avoided a sweep. Kalish missed all of last season after he underwent neck and shoulder surgeries. "Ive enjoyed every single day," he said. "Im trying to live my life like every day could be your last." Kalish made his second start for the Cubs in his first trip to the major since he played for the Boston Red Sox in 2012. "Every day I just come in and Im ready for whatevers thrown my way, especially with everything Ive been through," he said. "I just want to give it my all when I get the chance." Carlos Villanueva (1-2) allowed a run in five innings in his first start and third outing of the season for Chicago. A.J. Burnett (0-1), who signed a one-year, $16 million contract with the Phillies after he spent the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, allowed eight runs, four earned, in 5 2-3 innings. He struck out three but walked six. "I just didnt get it done," Burnett said. "I was pitching behind. I missed first pitches. The key today was throwing strikes. That was embarrassing. I dont care who you are, that is unacceptable." The Cubs scored four runs in the first and sixth innings. Their offence broke out after they scored eight runs and were 4 for 40 with runners in scoring position in their previous five games. "Today, we happened to have some balls find holes, and we took advantage of it." The Phillies scored a run on Chase Utleys groundout in the fifth to cut the lead to 4-1. Manager Ryne Sandberg challenged the call that Utley was out at first, but the review confirmed it. Ryan Howard lined into an inning-ending double play. "It was a bang-bang play," Sandberg said about the challenge. "Its the fifth inning. We need baserunners. It was worth a shot." The Phillies went 1 for 15 with runners in scoring position. They scored two runs off reliever Jose Veras in the ninth. Villanueva made his first start after he pitched in relief in two extra-inning games against the Pirates. He allowed game-winning hits in both games. "I wasnt happy when that happened," Villanueva said. "I feel like Ive grown a lot in my years here. You tell me that would have happened to me 5-6 years ago - I dont know how I would have handled it. I take the positive out of it. Now I have a chance to contribute." NOTES: SS Starlin Castro moved to sixth in the Cubs lineup after hitting second or third in previous games and had an RBI double. Castro was 9-for-22 in his career against Burnett entering Sunday. Renteria said he might move Castro around in the lineup. Castro said he agreed with the move. ...After an off day Monday, the Cubs begin a three-game home series against the Pirates on Tuesday. RHP Edwin Jackson (0-0, 1.69) will start against RHP Charlie Morton (0-0, 0.00).
