ABIDJAN -- Didier Drogba and Yaya Toure were picked for Ivory Coasts provisional World Cup squad of 28 players on Tuesday. Drogba and Toure are expected to form the spine for Africas top-ranked team when it plays Japan, Colombia and Greece in Group C in Brazil. Toures brother Kolo, a Liverpool defender, was also on the preliminary list released by coach Sabri Lamouchi, along with strikers Wilfried Bony of Swansea and Gervinho of Roma. Emmanuel Eboue, the former Arsenal and now Galatasaray right back, was not picked and looks set to miss the World Cup. Drogba, one of Africas best-ever strikers, is 36 and almost certainly heading to his last World Cup. Ivory Coast has its best chance of going far at the World Cup in Brazil after being drawn in a relatively manageable group. "I never said it was an easy group ... but we have our chances," Lamouchi said. Lamouchi expressed fears Tuesday at his squad announcement over the fitness of midfielders Souleman Bamba and Mathis Bolly, and Everton striker Lacina Traore, but he picked all three in his preliminary squad. The group will be cut to 23 for the World Cup. The coach also said Drogbas recent lack of game time because of a knee problem was an issue. "Not seeing Drogba on the field is also worrying." Lamouchi said. Yet the Ivorians still have a talented squad drawn mainly from the Turkish, French, German and English leagues and are expected to perform better than 2010, when they exited in the group stage after being drawn to face with Brazil and Portugal. The squad will travel to the United States on May 24 for a training camp in Dallas ahead of World Cup warm-up games against Bosnia on May 30 and El Salvador on June 4. Ivory Coast opens its World Cup campaign against Japan in Recife on June 14. ------ Squad: Goalkeepers: Boubacar Barry (Lokeren), Sylvain Gbohouo (Sewe San Pedro), Sayouba Mande (Stabaek), Badra Ali Sangare (ASEC Mimosas) Defenders: Serge Aurier (Toulouse), Benjamin Angoua (Valenciennes), Brice Dja Djedje (Marseille), Jean-Daniel Akpa-Akpro (Toulouse), Didier Zokora (Trabzonspor), Kolo Toure (Liverpool), Souleman Bamba (Trabzonspor), Arthur Boka (Stuttgart), Constant Djakpa (Eintracht Frankfurt), Ousmane Viera (Rizespor) Midfielders: Cheik Tiote (Newcastle), Serey Die (FC Basel), Ismael Diomande (Saint-Etienne), Didier Ya Konan (Hannover), Yaya Toure (Manchester City), Max Gradel (Saint-Etienne), Mathis Bolly (Fortuna Dusseldorf) Forwards: Didier Drogba (Galatasaray), Wilfried Bony (Swansea), Gervinho (Roma), Salomon Kalou (Lille), Lacina Traore (Everton), Giovanni Sio (FC Basel), Seydou Doumbia (CSKA Moscow) Adidas Tech Super Sale . We played a great team game, said Pelicans head coach Monty Williams. Cant say enough about our ball movement. This is a great win for our team. Ryan Anderson contributed 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Shaking up the starting lineup wasnt enough to jumpstart the Lakers, who remain near the bottom of the Western Conference standings after yet another convincing defeat. Jeremy Lin and Carlos Boozer were moved to the bench in favor of Ed Davis and Ronnie Price after a 5-15 start to the season. Davis and Boozer both had 12 points in their new roles while the guards struggled to the tune of three points apiece. Im going to keep this lineup for a while, said Lakers head coach Byron Scott. Carlos wasnt happy not staarting.dddddddddddd. And I was happy he felt that way. It would have bothered me if he was happy. Kobe Bryant scored 14 points on 18 shots to pace the Lakers, losers in seven of nine. The Pelicans turned a 10-point halftime lead into a 20-point cushion after a dominant third quarter. Alexis Ajinca scored on a hook shot and the newest Pelican, Gal Mekel, had a layup to push the spread to 24 points before a 12-0 Lakers run made it 83-71. Nick Young and Wayne Ellington both scored five during the spurt. But the lead never dipped back into single digits. Austin Rivers ended the flurry with a short bank shot, and Davis scored eight points in the final six minutes of the game to help keep LA at arms length. The Pelicans led 22-16 after one and 50-40 at halftime. Game Notes Six Lakers reached double figures ... Bryant is 63 points shy of passing Michael Jordan for third on the all-time scoring list ... KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Three weeks ago, the Kansas City Chiefs were charging toward the top of the AFC West. They had as much momentum as anybody in the league, winners of five straight. They had just beaten the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. They also had barely heard of Latavius Murray.Everything changed over four quarters in Oakland, though. The Chiefs struggled through the rain against a team that had lost 16 straight. Murray needed only four carries to run for 112 yards and two scores before leaving with a concussion. And the Raiders squeaked out a 24-20 win that started Kansas City (7-6) on a disastrous three-game skid. Now, the Chiefs are in playoff peril as they prepare to face the Raiders (2-11) on Sunday. In much the same way their season did an about-face with their first meeting, the Chiefs hope to turn things around when the longtime rivals meet again at Arrowhead Stadium. We still got a chance, Chiefs defensive tackle Dontari Poe said. Long as we got that and were trying to push, were going to keep moving. Theres really never any pointing fingers.Maybe thats because there are more places to point than fingers to do the pointing.Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith has been sacked 11 times in two games. Kansas City still does not have a touchdown catch from a wide receiver. Running back Jamaal Charles is banged up, as is tight end Anthony Fasano and linebacker Tamba Hali. The Chiefs run defence has been gouged by everyone. Their pass defence hasnt fared much better lately. With games still to go against Pittsburgh and San Diego, two teams also in the playoff mix, the Chiefs may be reaching the point of no return against the Raiders. The positive is there are some things we can do here to fix the issues, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. They are not things that we cant work out.The Raiders (2-11) could be an ideal get-right opponent, provided its the bunch that was whacked 52-0 by St. Louis two weeks ago and not the one that stunned San Francisco last week.Murray missed the Rams game while recovering from his concussion, but the break-out second-year running back returned to run 23 times for 76 yards against the 49ers.We missed him for that St. Louis game, but he came back last week, played in the game, did a nice job, Raiders coach Tony Sparano said. Hell be ready to go.With their season slipping away, the Chiefs insist theyll be ready, too. Here are some things to watch for in Sundays game.TRAINERS ROOM: Charles, Fasano and Hali all missed practice this week with knee injuries, and missing any of them would be a blow to the Chiefs. Charles is their most dynamic playmaker and Fasano helps to carve out holes for him. Hali helps to keep league sack leader Justin Houston from getting double-teamed. Next man up, weve got to go, Smith said.FAST CARR: The Raiders Derek Carr is coming off the best game of his rookie season, completing 22 of 28 passes for 254 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He threw for 174 yards with a touchdown and no picks against Kansas City earlier this season.POWERFUL TRUCK: Khalil Mack may hit like, well, a Mack truck, but he hadnt been hitting the quarterback much until only recently. The Raiders first-round pick had his first sack in Week 11 against San Diego, and is coming off his first two-sack game against San Francisco. Thats the part of my game that Ive always thought about, he said, making plays in the backfield.SWISS CHEESE: Running backs have merely had to pick their hole against the Kansas City run defence lately. The Chiefs have allowed at least 100 yards rushing in six straight games, and at least 200 yards in two of them. Even without star running back Andre Ellington, the Cardinals still ran for 141 yards last week. They make plays, too. Theyre professionals, linebacker Joe Mays said. We just have to work on our stuff in practice and be better.GOING FOR TWO: Oakland will be trying to win back-to-back games for the first time since Weeks 7 and 8 in 2012, and win on the road for the first time in 10 games. Theyre calling it a revenge game. Were knowledgeable of that, Raiders tight end Mychal Rivera said. We know that and were going to come in with the same kind of mindset.___Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Earl Mitchell Jersey . "For me, personally, to get back in, it was a great feeling," said Giordano, who proudly wore the Flames fire hat after the game, emblematic of being the teams choice of player of the game.Throughout the 2014 Canadian Football League season, we have seen 18 different starting quarterbacks. We started the season with these quarterbacks leading their teams: Kevin Glenn, B.C. Lions (6-7 as the starter) Mike Reilly, Edmonton Eskimos (9-3 as the starter) Bo Levi Mitchell, Calgary Stampeders (10-1 as the starter) Darian Durant, Saskatchewan Roughriders (8-2 as the starter) Drew Willy, Winnipeg Blue Bombers (6-8 as the starter) Zach Collaros, Hamilton Tiger-Cats (5-3 as the starter) Ricky Ray, Toronto Argonauts (5-8 as the starter) Henry Burris, Ottawa Redblacks (2-11 as the starter) Troy Smith, Montreal Alouettes (1-5 as the starter) We have been introduced to five quarterbacks who made their CFL debuts as starters in 2014. Can you name them? Hamiltons Jeremiah Masoli, debuted on July 18th vs Calgary and lost. (9-20-107yds-2td-1int) Hamiltons Dan LeFevour, debuted on July 28th vs Ottawa and won. (21-30-361-1td-1int) Montreals Jonathan Crompton, debuted on August 29th vs Ottawa and won. (15-25-245-0td-1int) Saskatchewans Tino Sunseri, debuted on September 14th vs Hamilton and lost. (9-21-88yd-0td-1int) Saskatchewans Seth Doege debuted on October 3rd vs Calgary and lost. (3-9-28-0td-3int) The remaining four starters we have seen this season are: Travis Lulay, 357 days after his last start, made his return on August 29 in a bitter-sweet 7-5 victory over Ottawa. In the last minute of play, Lulay re-injured his right throwing shoulder. Tough to watch this recurring nightmare unfold for the talented signal-caller, who just a few years ago, in 2011, was the CFLs Most Outstanding Player for both the regular season and in the Lions Grey Cup victory over Winnipeg. Drew Tate, Calgarys Stampeders fiery and talented signal-caller who is now 2-1 in relief of Bo Levi Mitchell, made his first start of the season on September 21 in a road loss to Montreal. Since then, Tate has settled down and guided the Stampeders to two extremely important West Division victories over the B.C. Lions and the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Matt Nichols hopped back into the saddle for the Edmonton Eskimos just in time for the back-to-back Labour Day games vs. their arch rivals, the Calgary Stampeders. Unfortunately, the fifth year quarterback out of Eastern Washington, dropped both contests, moving his record this season as a starter to 0-2. Alex Brink, the fourth year quarterback from Washington State, was the next man up for the Montreal Alouettes when the Troy Smith experiment ended. Brink started two games, the first a loss to Saskatchewan on August 16th and the second start, albeit a brief appearance, was a loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers the following week. Alex is 0-2 as a starter in 2014. Theres only been two quarterbacks to start every game for their respective teams, can you name them? Think ageless and come-from-behind victories. If you said the Ottawa Redblacks Henry Burris and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers Drew Willy, you would be bang on! These two warriors/quarterbacks have been able to find a way to overcome injury, adversity and a slew of other obstacles to provide their teams with a level of consistency from the most difficult position to play in all of sport. Who are some other quarterbacks we might see make a start down the stretch in 2014? Well, with Saskatchewan signing the 41-year-old Kerry Joseph this week, hes a good bet. Remember Joseph has won a Grey Cup in 2007 and won or earned the CFLs MOP that season. The team has struggled under centre with two young and inexperienced quarterbacks in Tino Sunseri and Seth Doege since Darian Durantt went down in the Banjo Bowl vs Winnipeg.dddddddddddd I believe Sunseri has a bright future in this league, but with five games remaining in the regular season, all the pressures that are innately there in Regina and with the West Division so tightly contested, I believe his time to learn the game and lead this team is going to be put on hold for a bit. The move to bring in Kerry Joseph is the right one for a few reasons. As stated before, both Sunseri and Doege are young and inexperienced. If Sunseri had not played so spectacularly in the second half of last weeks tough loss to Calgary, we would be hearing the chants for another young quarterback by the name of Keith Price, first year player from Washington. That would not be fair to the kid to throw him out there at this time of the season. Doege was not ready and it would be more of the same for Price. This has little or nothing to do with their skill set and ability as players, but more to do with a team that has the talent to contend and defend their Grey Cup title with a quarterback that has been there and done that. Its about a quarterback that has been groomed for these situations and one that is capable of handling them. That could be the young and talented Sunseri for a bit longer so that Joseph can get brought up to speed. But look for the veteran Joseph to play a large role sooner than later for the Green Machine, down the stretch. If Drew Willy keeps taking a beating, 54 sacks through the 1st 14 games, and if the Winnipeg Blue Bombers continue to drop games the last third of the season (lost seven of their last eight), I could see the Bombers resting their franchise player. This is all based on playoff contention. If the Bombers do make playoffs, no doubt its Willy. If they continue to go the direction they have been, seeing what Brian Brohm and Robert Marve have would be in order. With that said, I look for Marve to have the biggest upside in the future. Hes explosive and has more tools to suit the Canadian game. B.C. Lions quarterback Kevin Glenn has been getting banged up this season and the Lions are a few more solid hits and or a few sacks away from seeing what first year player John Beck from Brigham Young has to offer. I hope that doesnt happen, but the Lions are just one play away from that scenario. Looking at the rest of the teams that are just one play away from quarterbacks making their debuts in 2014 along with the five we have already seen are: Toronto is one play away from Mitchell Gale, second year player from Abilene Christian or Trevor Harris, third year player from Edinboro. Kinda scary when you think about that! Not to diminish these two young quarterbacks abilities, but the drop-off would be astronomical. What about in the Nations Capital? After the loss of Thomas Demarco on August 24th with a torn ACL, the Redblacks were one play away from Danny OBrien, first year player from Catawba. GM Marcel Desjardins went out and found an insurance policy, fifth year veteran from Purdue, Joey Elliott. Smart move! In Hamilton, with the loss of backup quarterback Dan LeFevour for the rest of the season, the options for Kent Austin in a back-up role are now Stephen McGee, first year player from Texas A&M (actually he was in Hamilton last season and knows offensive coordinator Tommy Condells playbook) and already mentioned Jeremiah Masoli, third year quarterback from Mississippi. So there you have it, a look at whos been in, whos in and who quite possibly could be in down the stretch. Bet we will see a few more before all is said and done! BARCELONA, Spain -- Lionel Messi scored a double to lead Barcelona to a comfortable 3-0 win over Racing Santander on Saturday, while fellow Argentine international Gonzalo Higuain netted a hat trick in Real Madrids 4-1 win over Real Betis. Madrid had provisionally moved ahead of its fierce rivals, but Messi kept the defending champions top of the standings and a point ahead of Madrid with a goal in each half while Xavi Hernandez added another in Barcelonas third straight win. Surprise pacesetter Levante can draw level with Barcelona with a victory over Malaga on Sunday. With 196 goals for Barcelona in all competitions, Messi moved past Laszlo Kubala (194) into sole possession of second place on the club career scoring list, behind only Cesar Rodriguez (235). "The only thing I have to do is give him a shirt with the No. 10 on the back and send him out to play," Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola said about Messi, who has 16 goals in 12 games overall this season and leads the Spanish league with 10 goals-- two more than Higuain. Also Saturday, three of Spains "second tier" teams all failed to win. Valencia was held to a 1-1 draw at Mallorca, Villarreal drew 0-0 at Getafe as both teams continue to disappoint, and Atletico Madrid failed to score for the third straight game as it finished 0-0 at Granada. As was expected against a team that had only won twice ever at Camp Nou stadium, Barcelona dominated Racing from the start, although the European champions had to cope with the early exit of defender Gerard Pique, who walked off with an injury to his right thigh. Pique had only recently returned from a muscle injury in his left leg and Barcelona is already without new signings Cesc Fabregas and Alexis Sanchez due to muscle tears. Andres Iniesta, himself just back from a leg injury, cued Barcelonas 11th-minute opener when he slid the ball over for Messi to shed two defenders and bring the goalkeeper to the ground with a feint before rolling home. The Racing defence scrambled to deny Messi moments later but did not nothing to stop Xavi from charging into the area to head Pedro Rodriguezs cross into the back of the net in the 27th. In the second half, Racing appeared more concerned with not receiving a thrashing than scoring, but Messi was well-placed to volley in a rebound of a strike by Iniesta in the 68th. "We figured out how to get ahead in the first half and that helped us the rest of the way," said Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara, whose team has outscored its league opponents at Camp Nou this season 21-0. In the Spanish capital, Higuain scored his third hat trick in 14 days after trebles for Madrid against Espanyol and for Argentina against Chile. Following an evenly matched first half, Madrid brushed Betis aside after Higuain broke through less than a minute into the second half. Marcelo caught the Betis defence flat-footed with a long pass over the top that Cristiano Ronaldo chased down inside the area and laid on for Higuain to tap home. Once ahead, Madrid rolled. Kaka extended the lead in the 59th with a trademark curling right-footed strike around the goalkeeper into the far side of the net. Jorge Molina fired in a pass from strike partner Ruben Castro to give Betis a moment of hope in the 69th, but Higuain finished off a pair of assists in the 70th and 73rd from fellow Argentina international Angel Di Maria to keep Madrid perfect at home. "I am happy, very happy for having scored and helped the team," said Higuain, who had lost his starting role to Karim Benzema after a back injury sidelined him for a large stretch of last season. "A few weeks ago I wasnt playing, but I am in the same form as before, just taking advantage of the opportunities I have," Higuain said. "After all the time I had to wait to play, now I am enjoying it even more." Elsewhere, Tomar Hemeds injury-time penalty kick salvaged a point for Mallorca against visiting Valencia in the debut of coach Joaquin Caparros. France defender Adil Rami scored from a corner to put Valencia ahead in the 39th, but Hemed converted his third spot kick in two games to split the points in the 93rd after Mehmet Topal handled the ball in the area. Rami was shown a red card for insulting the referee following the match. Also on Sunday, its: Rayo Vallecano vs. Espanyol, Zaragoza vs. Real Sociedad and Sevilla vs. Sporting Gijon. LAS VEGAS -- Anze Kopitar scored 15 seconds into the game, and the Los Angeles Kings went on to a 4-1 preseason win over the New York Rangers on Friday night. Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, and Trevor Lewis also scored for Los Angeles (3-2-1), which led 3-1 after the first period. Carter and Richards each scored on the power play in the first. Carter also assisted on Richards goal. J.T. Miller scored for the Rangers (1-5), who played their fourth game in five nights, closing their western preseason trip. New York opens the regular season at Phoenix on Thursday, while Los Angeles finishes the preseason Saturday. After the Kings won the opening draw, Kopitar took the puck down the left boards, headed to the goal and beat goalie Henrik Lundqvist with a backhand. Jonathan Quick had 22 saves for the Kings, while Lundqvist finished with 29 stops. The teams play in the regular season on Oct. 7 in Los Angeles. The Kings victory was part of Frozen Fury 15 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. A 23-year-old rookie, Stroman is 4-2 with a 3.44 earned run average in 12 games this season, the past seven of those being starts. He logged the first scoreless outing of his career on Friday versus Oakland in a no-decision. Stroman scattered three hits and three walks over seven frames, logging a career-high 115 pitches while matching a personal best with seven strikeouts for the third time on the season. However, Toronto went on to lose 1-0 in 12 innings. "I feel comfortable, I feel like Ive gotten into a pretty good groove," Stroman said on Torontos website. "Just trying to help the team win each and every start up here." The lack of run support wasnt anything new for the righty, who has seen the Blue Jays plate more than three runs in just one of his last six outings since he won his first career start 12-2 on May 31. Stroman faced the Angels in relief on May 11 and was tagged for four runs over 1 2/3 innings. The struggling C.J. Wilson counters for Los Angeles and though he has not lost in his past three appearances, he has posted an 11.08 ERA over that time. Wilson even managed to record a victory over Minnesota on June 24 despite allowing six runs over five innings and has recorded back-to-back no-decisions since. That includes Friday versus Houston as he allowed six runs on seven hits -- including three homers -- over 4 1/3 frames. "Hes trying to make adjustments, theres no doubt about that," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said on his teams website. "C.J.s on a tough run right now." Thee 33-year-old southpaw is 8-6 on the year and his ERA has risen to 4.dddddddddddd23. Wilson had a chance to pitch the Angels to a four-game road sweep of the Blue Jays back on May 12, but took the loss in that series finale after allowing five runs over six innings. He yielded a three-run homer to Jose Bautista and a two-run shot off the bat of Brett Lawrie in defeat. Los Angeles has won 11 of its last 14 versus Toronto, but the Blue Jays drew even in this set with last nights 4-0 victory. Jose Reyes sparked a struggling offense with four hits, one a two-run homer, and three RBI, while R.A. Dickey logged seven scoreless innings. Dioner Navarro knocked in the other run for the Blue Jays, who pounded out 14 hits en route to snapping a five-game slide in which they had scored only six runs. Dickey, meanwhile, allowed four hits and a walk while fanning five before Dustin McGowan and Aaron Loup followed with scoreless innings of relief to cap the five-hitter. "Changing speeds with the knuckler kept them guessing all night. I tried to throw first-pitch strikes as much as I could," said Dickey after helping Toronto end the Angels 11-game home win streak that was one shy of the club record. Tyler Skaggs gave up three runs on 11 hits across 6 2/3 frames for the Halos, whose five-game win streak came to an end. "Tyler pitched a good ballgame, except for the changeup to Reyes that ended up in the bullpen," said Scioscia, referring to Reyes seventh-inning homer. The Angels lost for just the fourth time in their last 18 games, but still trail the Oakland Athletics by 4 1/2 games for first place in the AL West. Toronto moved to within 2 1/2 games of first-place Baltimore in the AL East. cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap jerseys cheapjerseyswholesale wholesale jerseys ' ' '

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Memphis Grizzlies are headed on a three-game road trip with a better grip on the Western Conferences final playoff spot. Marc Gasol scored 19 points, Zach Randolph added 18 points and 12 rebounds as the Grizzlies defeated the Portland Trail Blazers 109-99 on Tuesday night. The victory kept Memphis in the conferences eighth spot with a one-game edge over the idle Phoenix Suns. But players are not satisfied with the current position. "Even though we are in, we want to be higher," guard Courtney Lee said. "Were still chasing, and I think thats the right mindset to have going forward because if you continue to chase, youll never get complacent and fall off." Mike Conley added 17 points and Lee finished with 16. Mike Miller had 14 for Memphis, which won its third straight. Damian Lillard led the Trail Blazers with 32 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field, but connecting on 12 of 13 free throws, including six in the fourth quarter when he was fouled on a pair of 3-point attempts. LaMarcus Aldridge had 19 points and 10 rebounds, while Nicolas Batum contributed 15 points for Portland, which lost its third straight, matching its longest skid of the season. Memphis built its lead to double-digits early in the fourth quarter and Portland got it under 10 -- to nine -- on only two occasions the rest of the way. The common refrain from the Trail Blazers was it was "just one of those nights." "They would just get a tip ball or a loose ball and they would hit a 3 with it," Lillard said. "It was just one too many of those situations." While Memphis heads on a road trip to New Orleans, Toronto and Philadelphia holding the final playoff spot, Portland sits in the conferences fifth slot. Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts was pleased with the way his team competed and shooting 22 of 29 from the foul line. "I thought we had a lot of shots we normally make," Stotts said. "We took care of the ball (eight turnovers). We got to the free-throw line. We were aggressive. "I thought it was just one of those nights." Portland struggled from the field, connecting on 41 per cent for the game. In addition to Lillards percentage, Aldridge was 8 of 23 and Batum was 5 of 13. Wesley Matthews managed only one field goal on seven attempts. "I think he had good looks," Stotts said of Aldridges shooting. "But you cant make them every night." Aldridge considered it just part of a shooting slump that will end at some point. "I am going to find my rhythm, and I am going to make those shot Ive been missing soon. It will get a lot better," he said. The Grizzlies, who shot at least 50 per cent in each quarter, finished the night at a season-best 56 per cent including 6 of 12 from outside the arc. Memphis held a 54-47 lead at the break, but Portland was close despite shooting 41 per cent. The Trail Blazers gathered nine offensive rebounds for 10 second-chance points. Memphis stretched the lead back to 15 to open the second half, and kept the advantage through the middle stages of the quarter. Lee was the catalyst for Memphis, scoring 13 in the quarter, a difference, he said, of not playing as passive as he had in the first half. "Coaches and my teammates were telling me to go out and be more aggressive," Lee said of the second half. "You dont have to tell me that twice." The Trail Blazers closed the stanza on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 78-69 entering the fourth. After Nick Calathes connected on a 3-pointer to open the fourth period, Memphis had its double-digit lead back. NOTES: Memphis has won five straight in the series. ... BOCA RATON, Fla. - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman confirmed that the Board of Governors had no objection to billionaire businessman Bill Foley exploring the level of interest in an expansion team coming to the city of Las Vegas.Bettman was adamant that nothing more should be read into the leagues consideration of Foleys request in terms of any advancement in expansion discussions. He explained that the interest from Foley and Las Vegas raised questions about the viability of that market being able to support a team, which is why Foley wants to conduct a season ticket drive and see what kind of numbers are achieved. There are currently 30 franchises operating in the NHL and even though there has been interest shown by other cities in addition to Las Vegas, like Quebec City and Seattle, there is no guarantee that enough votes would be procured to approve any expansion. That was the main point Bettman wanted to get across after this first of two days of meetings. There is no formal expansion process, Bettman said. There is no vote that was taken today. There is no vote that was contemplated. We dont have an agreement to sell anybody an expansion process. When asked why the league would even consider expansion, Bettman reiterated the growing interest from other cities in adding a team, and in Foleys case he has expressed an interest for more than a year. But the league hasnt even studied the Las Vegas market as far as its strength and no timeline has been established for an expansion process.Pierre Dion of Quebecor attended the meeting Monday but not to discuss his pursuit of an expansion team in Quebec City. He was there strictly to address the television relationship between his TVA Sports French TV network and the league. The other two highlights on the agenda that Bettman placed a priority on were the preliminary projections of what the salary cap will be next season and an update on the transfer of ownership of the Arizona Coyotes to Andrew Barroway. Our best guess, and its gotten some variation in it, is if the Canadian dollar stays where it is now for the rest of the season, which is about .88 cents, the cap for next season would be approximately $73 million, Bettman said. Thats a guess. Its subject to variation and it also assumes that the Canadian dollar stays where it is now.As for the Coyotes and Barroway, he said that is an ongoing process that is still on track and the board is not yet ready to vote on it. MILWAUKEE -- The off-season signing of free agent starter Bronson Arroyo is paying off for the Arizona Diamondbacks. The 15-year veteran has been mentoring young teammates since spring training. And after a rough patch on the mound in April, hes off to a splendid start himself in May. Arroyo kept the Milwaukee Brewers at bay with off-speed stuff, allowing an unearned run and five hits in 7 1-3 innings, to lead Arizona over the Milwaukee Brewers 3-2 Wednesday. Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run homer for the second straight game for the Diamondbacks, who have won five of seven after starting the season 8-22. Arroyo (3-2) has been one of the sparks, going 2-0 with an 0.87 ERA in his last three starts. "Hes throwing the ball good. Hes been trending in this direction and in total command today," manager Kirk Gibson said. Wily Peralta (4-2) allowed 11 hits, tying his career high, and two runs in six innings. The right-hander had trouble all afternoon locating his pitches, including a fastball that can reach 96 mph. Arroyo doesnt throw nearly that hard, but he was even more effective against the free-swinging Brewers. "Its hard as a hitter to go up that way. You think you get a fastball and then you sit off-speed," manager Ron Roenicke said. "The more swingers you have in your lineup, the more youll have trouble with him." Arizona stranded 13 runners, including leaving men at third three times through the seventh. The right-handed Arroyo made up for Arizonas shortcomings at the plate with his outing on the mound. He made Jonathan Lucroy flail on an 86 mph sinker to start the seventh with a strikeout, and ended the inning by striking out Mark Reynolds on a slider. Its a far cry from a few weeks ago when Arroyo didnt make it out of the fifth and allowed a combined 18 hits and 14 runs in back-to-back outings against the Mets and Cubs. Hes backing up his encouraging words to teammates with solid starts again. "You try to do all the little things and field your position," Arroyo said in recounting talks to younger players. "All those types of things matter. Especially for a guy like me, Im not overpowering so I have to take everything I can." Addison Reed got his 10th save in 11 chances despite giving up a run in the ninth when Scooter Gennett doubled down the left-field line and scored two batters later on Lyle Overbays sacrifice fly. Reed struck out Reynolds swinging on a high fastball to end the game. The Brewers are now 2-6 after opening with a big league-best 20-7 record. With third-place hitter Ryan Braun out with an oblique injury and cleanup hitter Aramis Ramirez slumping badly, the offence has been choppy -- leaving less margin for error for a pitching staff off to a strong start overall. "I know the lineups not the same, but we still have enough guys in there that I think we should be scoring some runs," Roenicke said. "Well get it going, well figure it out." Arizona escaped a jam in the eighth after the Brewers put two on with one out. Pinch-hitter Rickie Weeks then lined a single off reliever Brad Ziegler that loaded the bases for Carlos Gomez -- who hit the next pitch sharply into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play that elicited groans from hometown fans. Arizona is finding its way on the road. Goldschmidt hit an 0-1 pitch for his seventh homer of the year after Martin Prado led off the third with a single. "This whole road trip I think our bats are getting better. Were starting to drive the ball a little bit," Gibson said. "Were starting to get better." ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Sometimes, the shadow of Patrick Roy follows Semyon Varlamov around the ice. Breathing hard to catch up, too. At the conclusion of practice on Wednesday, the Colorado Avalanche coach tried to pull alongside his goaltender as he went through a cool-down session. Roy just wanted to track him down to tell Varlamov how pleased he was with the way hes been performing. After all, Varlamovs play in net has looked as efficient and effortless as, well, the Hall of Famer whos now coaching him. Off to a 7-1 start and among the league leaders in goals-against (1.76), Varlamov is thriving in the presence of Roy. "I think Varly, today, when I said how proud I was the way hes bounced back, he had a big smile," Roy said. "He was happy. I think as a player thats what you want to hear from your coach." Not just any coach, but Roy — one of the best to ever play the position. No pressure living up to his expectations. Thats the thing: Roy has been as much of a confidant as coach, which Varlamov appreciates. "This has been awesome," said the 25-year-old Varlamov after Wednesdays practice. "He can see something in a game, during a game, just some things I have to do better, what I did wrong, or something like that. Thats helped me a lot. I just have a lot of confidence." A year ago, Varlamov couldnt say that. He was struggling in goal - allowing three goals a game - and hardly looking anything like the type of franchise goalie the Avalanche thought they were acquiring when they sent a first-round pick to Washington in 2011. This season has been a big turnaround. That has to do with the arrival of Roy and a staff that included goalie coach Francois Allaire, who once mentored Roy. This summer, Allaire, Varlamov and backup Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who has two shutouts this season, spent a few weeks in Montreal honing their technique. More specifically, Allaire tweaked some minute things with Varlamovs form. Asked what precisely they worked on, Varlamov smiled and said, "I dont want to talk about that." Top secret? "Yep," he said. "But were still working on this different style a lot. Im still learning how to play that way, how coach wants me to play." Unlike past years, Varlamov isnt being asked to come up with the big save time after time, or to be the backbone of the defence. In Roys system, the defencemen are more aggressive on the offensive end and way more accountable for helping out Varlamov. "Hes not hanging out to dry like in the past with some of our old systems," defenceman Erik Johnson explained. "Its pretty cool to see Varly transition into an elite NHL goalie." Then again, forward Matt Duchene knew this day would arrive. Hes been touting the talent of Varlamov for years, but no one would listen because Colorado was so buried in the standings. "Ive been a huge fan of him since he came here," said Duchene, whos among the NHL leaders in goals with nine. "I love shooting on him at practice, because its always a challenge. "I think Varly feels more comfortable than ever right now. He knows hes not alone in this and that people are backing him up every night." This helps with Varlamovs confidence as well: He no longer feels so isolated. When he first arrived in the U.S., the Russian star spoke only broken English. By hanging out with the players in the locker room, hes steadily picked up the language to the point where he can hold a casual conversation with anyone. "Life is so much easier when you can speak with people," Varlamov said. "The boys did a good job of teaching me." Another challenge soon awaits Varlamov, one that hes trying not to think about but its getting more and more difficult: The 2014 Sochi Games in his home country. Hes hoping to be in goal for the Olympics. "Of course, thats a dream for every player growing up, to play for our national team," he said. "Its always so much fun to play for a national team. Its always something special, especially for me because Russian fans, Russian people, they pull for us. Its going to be very cool if I go and play there. "But I dont think right now about Sochi. I think only about how were playing here, with Colorado." Lamar Miller Jersey . JOHNS, N.TORONTO -- Former starting goalie Stefan Frei may finally get his chance to play next week for Toronto FC in place of the suspended Joe Bendik. Frei has not started an MLS game since Sept. 24, 2011, when Toronto was beaten 3-0 by Chivas USA. The 27-year-old Swiss-born keeper missed all of last season with an ankle and leg injury suffered in training. Then, having endured a long recuperation, he lost his job to Bendik after breaking his nose in the first game of the 2013 pre-season. Bendik, a fiery and dependable shot-stopper, has been one of the bright lights in Torontos 5-16-11 season. But he received a second yellow card at the end of Torontos 1-0 loss to Philadelphia last Saturday and will have to sit out a game in Chicago on Oct. 19. Toronto has a bye this weekend. Bendik was yellow-carded in the 86th minute for time-wasting as he prepared a goal kick. After the game ended, he got another yellow when he went to talk to the referee. Philadelphia scored on a 95th-minute free kick by Brazils Kleberson to win 1-0. "That was a weird one, I dont understand that," manager Ryan Nelsen said Tuesday of the ejection. "Mind-boggling how he got the first (card). And then I think the second (card) was more that he was asking about how it took them (Philadelphia) two minutes to celebrate the goal and then he (referee Armando Villarreal) called the game before the six minutes (stoppage time) was up. "So he was just asking why blow (the whistle) so quickly, which is a fair question. But generally when you ask those type of questions, you get those type of responses. Unfortunately we wont have Joe available." Villarreal handed out seven yellow cards and a straight red (to Phialdelphias Fabinho). Toronto has no shortage of goalies behind Bendik with Frei, Chris Konopka and Quillan Roberts. With 81 starts under his belt, the 28-year-old Frei has the most experience. But he is widely expected to be on his way out. His contract, worth a hefty US$200,000 this season, is expiring and the club is committed to Bendik, who more than likely will get a new deal to reward his No.dddddddddddd1 status. Bendik is making a bargain $46,500 this year. The team acquired Konopka in a deal with the Philadelphia Union last month. The six-foot-five keeper, who also makes $46,500, is expected to be Bendiks backup next season. In the case of fullback Richard Eckersley, another TFC player seen on his way out from the club due to a high salary cap hit, Nelsen has opted to see what else he has available in recent weeks. That has opened up a starting spot for Mark Bloom. Still his early take is that Frei will get the start. "Well have to see how we go for the next two weeks but Stefans been in that (backup) position all season so at the moment its his." Nelsens hand may be forced given that Konopka was recovering from an injury prior to joining Toronto. "Hes close but probably not close enough," said Nelsen. Many fans see Frei as a loyal servant of the club who has endured a dreadful spell of bad luck. Nelsen was asked at a recent breakfast with supporters whether he would consider giving Frei one final start in the season finale for "a proper sendoff." Nelsen was diplomatic at the time, without committing to anything. Its not the kind of gesture that appeals to the ultra-competitive Nelsen, however. The Toronto manager may well have opted for Kopoka had he been healthy. But Konopkas health also gives Nelsen a reason to win some points by starting Frei. At 19, Roberts is seen as one for the future and will likely be loaned out to a USL team next season to get seasoning. Bendiks suspension follows a high note, at least. He is up for save of the week for a stop on Philadelphias Michael Farfan. Kleberson, meanwhile is up for goal of the week. The bye week comes at a good time for Toronto given that midfielders Bobby Convey (ankle), Darel Russell and Alvaro Rey (both quads) both were injured in the Philadelphia game. "They should be all right by Chicago but well keep an eye on them," said Nelsen. Toronto wraps up its season Oct. 26 at home to the Montreal Impact. cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

This win keeps Canada undefeated at 7-0, and could just about wrap up first place in the round-robin stage. The Russian women, led by Anna Sidorova, fell to 3-4, fifth in the standings as of the completion of the match. After stealing the deuce in the fifth end to go up 5-2, Jones played a relentless game. She didnt surrender a single Russian point over the following three ends, which were all blank. It wasnt until the ninth end, where Sidorova was finally able to break through and take advantage of the last shot hammer, earning a single. The Russians were forced to concede in the 10th end after Jones ran them out of rocks. Earlier on Saturday, Canada beat Japan 8-6. Len Dawson Jersey .Y. - Sabres owner Terry Pegula says injuries are behind his underachieving teams struggles, and he is confident Buffalo will bounce back in the second half of the season.INDIANAPOLIS -- The Colts are giving running back Chris Rainey a second chance to prove he can play -- and stay out of trouble. Pittsburgh took Rainey in the fifth round of the 2012 draft, but released him in January following an arrest in Florida following an alleged altercation with his girlfriend. It wasnt the first time he ran into legal trouble, but for the Steelers it was the last straw. For 11 months, Rainey worked out and waited to be signed by another NFL team. Indianapolis (7-3) reached out to him Tuesday and signed him Wednesday. "Eleven months is a long time so Im just glad to be back," Rainey said Wednesday. Rainey is the latest gamble made by the Colts this season. They had previously signed receiver DaRick Rogers, who admitted to flunking multiple drug tests in college. They also have receiver LaVon Brazill, a second-year player they drafted in 2012 who missed four games after violating the leagues substance-abuse policy, and tight end Weslye Saunders, who was suspended eight games after violating the leagues performance-enhancing drug policy. Theres little doubt the 5-foot-9, 198-pound running back has talent. Coming out of the University of Florida, he was clocked in about 4.3 seconds in the 40-yard dash. And last season, Rainey played in all 16 games, rushing 26 times for 102 yards and two touchdowns while catching 14 passes for 60 yards. He also averaged 26.5 yards on kickoff returns. And hhe finished ninth on Floridas career rushing list with 2,464 yards.dddddddddddd But the problems have come off the field. In college, he was reportedly charged with stalking -- something the Steelers investigated before taking him. In Pittsburgh, he reportedly received citations for driving with a suspended license, which was later dismissed, and "defiant trespass" at a casino -- and that was before the alleged trouble in Florida. Colts coach Chuck Pagano said Wednesday that the Colts made their expectations clear before signing Rainey even though its unclear how long hell stick around the Colts locker room. "We worked him out. We sat him down, spent a lot of time with him, obviously," Pagano said. "We feel like hes learned from his mistakes and theyre behind him." Rainey later acknowledged he has a different attitude about this chance because he spent so much time waiting to get back in the league, even turning down chances to play in the Canadian Football League. Wednesdays move is Indys latest attempt to shore up its offence since top receiver Reggie Wayne went out with a season-ending knee injury, and theyre hoping this one works out. Rainey insists hell make sure it does. "All I can do is move forward and just stay positive from here," Rainey said. "I know what people read. They dont know me, so the people who know me, they know me. I cant do nothing about it." cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Between the 15th and 16th picks in Thursday nights draft came a very special selection by the NBA. Commissioner Adam Silver announced at that point that the NBA would let Isaiah Austin fulfil the dream of every young player, making him a ceremonial pick. Just over a week ago, the sophomore centre from Baylor was diagnosed with Marfan syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects the heart. It ended his playing career. The illness was discovered during a physical for the draft. "For Commissioner Silver to even invite me here was a tremendous blessing and it just shows how much class that man has," Austin said. "Its really been a tough week for me, and its been really rough. Ive just had a tremendous amount of support from everybody around the world, telling me theyre praying for me and everything. I cant thank everybody enough." The crowd at Barclays Center rose to its feet as Austin, sitting in the waiting area with most of the first-round picks, hugged family members and put on a generic NBA cap. He went up to the stage and posed with Silver, just as all the drafts picks do when they are called. During the season, the 7-foot-1 Austin revealed he had a prosthetic right eye after multiple operations couldnt repair a detached retina. Austin, expected to be a high pick when healthy, said he felt he has "a great story to share." He said Baylor coach Scott Drew has already offered him a coaching position with the Bears. "I have a whole life ahead of me," Austin said. "Im not going to sit here and Im not going to sulk about not being able to play basketball anymore, because I can still be involved with the game somehow or some way." Austin said there was plenty to enjoy on what would have been his draft day. "Just being around all the draftees and seeing my friends get drafted, it just brings joy in my heart because I know how hard we work to get to this point," Austin said. "Ive been through it. ... Just to see how people persevere through their own problems, because everybody has their own problems. Its touching and its heart-warming, really." Minutes after Austin made the walk across the stage, there were comments on social media. Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves tweeted: "Happy Isaiah Austin was able to hear his name called at the NBA draft. Very cool to see." The 1991 Heisman Trophy winner Desmond Howard tweeted: "Adam Silver hasnt been on the job 12 mos and is already doing a remarkable job! Very classy move. God bless Isaiah Austin." Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder tweeted: "Adam silver is such a classy man! Thats love right there. Im emotional for him. Damn I love that." Austin is already spreading his message of perseverance. "I want people to know they can push through anything, because Ive done it," he said. "I just want them to know they have the power within themselves to do it if they keep faith and a positive attitude." Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Stephen Curry continued his shooting struggles at United Center, but Draymond Green picked up the slack. Green scored a career-high 31 points and stuffed the stat sheet as the Golden State Warriors pulled out a 112-102 road win over the Chicago Bulls to extend a franchise-best win streak to 12 games. Green made seven 3-pointers as part of an 11-for-20 shooting performance while also contributing seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks. Klay Thompson added 24 points and Curry scored 19 for the Warriors, who havent lost since a home setback to San Antonio on Nov. 11. All I know is, its great to have good players, said first-year Warriors head coach Steve Kerr. Im the luckiest coach in the NBA. Curry handed out a game-high seven assists but shot just 5-for-14 from the field in his first career win against the Bulls in Chicago. He hit a combined 19-for-55 in four previous losses. Jimmy Butlers 24 points and Pau Gasols 22-point, 20-rebound effort werent enough for Chicago, which fell to 2-5 at home this season. Theyre a tough team to match up against, said Gasol. They have a lot of players that can spread the floor, shoot the ball well. They do a good job of moving the ball and finding the open guy. Green scored 11 points, including three triples, during a 20-4 spurt that led to a Bulls timeout midway through the first quarter. Chicago chipped away from there and opened the second quarter on a 11-0 run to climb back in front, but the Warriors starting unit returned midway through the period and the visitors regained control. Thompson shot 4-of-6 for 13 points in the second, Andre Iguodala beat the buzzer with a scoop layup and Golden State led 61-49 at halftime. The third quarter belonged to the Bulls, who shot 5-of-6 from the arc in the stanza and led 80-79 following Gasols late hook. Midway through the fourth, Thompson and Green hit back-to-back 3s around a Kirk Hinrich miss and Iguodala had a jam in transition to give the Warriors a 97-87 lead. The lead hovered between seven and 13 the rest of the way. Game Notes The Bulls had won five straight home games against the Warriors, who were 6-28 in their last 34 in Chicago ... There were 15 lead changes ... Andrew Bogut had 12 rebounds for the Warriors ... Greens seven 3s were a career-best. Boone Jenner and Mark Letestu each had a goal and an assist, and Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 31 shots for his second shutout in 72 hours to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets past the New York Islanders 4-0 on Sunday night. "We seem not to do anything the easy way," Letestu said with a laugh. "To get four (games) in five (days) to finish off the season, its very Blue Jacket of us -- doing things the hard way and probably earning our way into the playoffs." Columbus ends its home schedule on Tuesday night against Phoenix and then closes the regular season with games at Dallas on Wednesday, then at Tampa Bay and Florida on Friday and Saturday. The win not only boosted the Blue Jackets in the standings, it also helped them wipe away the bitter taste of Friday nights 4-3 home loss to Stanley Cup champion Chicago. Ben Smith jammed in a goal during a scrum with 3.9 seconds left in the Blackhawks win. "That was one of those (where) its a punch in the gut," coach Todd Richards said. "So, yeah, it was nice to get that one to put (Fridays loss) in the distance." The Blue Jackets, desperate to hang on to a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, matched a season high with three power-play goals. It wasnt lost on Jenner that his first goal was similar to Smiths on Friday. The goalie made the initial stop, but then couldnt get to a loose puck while several players crashed the net, sticks flying, all trying to get to it. "Especially with that first power play, we wanted to get on them early," Jenner said. "It was a big goal." Camped at the doorstep, he tipped a shot by Letestu that Islanders goalie Anders Nilsson got a piece of, but the puck slipped between his pads and rested behind him, just short of the goal line. It sat there for 3 seconds before Jenner worked his way around the goalie and jammed it in for his 14th at 4:26. On their next power play, the Blue Jackets swiveled the puck from the left boards to right, with Johnson tucking a one-timer inside the far post.dddddddddddd It was his first goal in 21 games and fifth this season. Ryan Murray also ended a long scoring drought, and Brandon Dubinsky had two assists. Bobrovsky, who won at Philadelphia 2-0 on Thursday, earned his fifth shutout of the season. He improved to 10-2 against the Islanders while allowing just under two goals a game. Columbus won at home after going 1-4-2 in its last seven games at Nationwide Arena. "Weve let some slip away, so we were pretty focused on not letting that happen," said Letestu, whose even-strength goal midway through the second period ended a string of 22 games in which he had not scored. "That was an important two points." Columbus has 87 points, two fewer than Philadelphia -- the third-place team in the Metropolitan Division race -- which beat Buffalo on Sunday night. The Blue Jackets currently hold the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. They created some breathing room Sunday as New Jersey and Toronto are now three points behind them, and Washington is another point behind those teams. Nilsson made 29 saves for the Islanders, who had their seven-game point streak (5-0-2) ended. Despite being without top players John Tavares and Kyle Okposo, they had played well with a lineup stocked with 10 rookies. "To be honest with you, this is the first game in a while I feel we werent there collectively as a group," Islanders defenceman Travis Hamonic said. "Weve been playing some really good hockey, especially the young players." New York coach Jack Capuano conceded this was a step back in the learning process. "Weve got some games left with these kids and were going to go out and teach and play structured and work hard," he said. NOTES: The Blue Jackets had failed to convert on 36 consecutive power plays, but they have turned things around by going 9 for 24 in the seven games since that drought. ... CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs newly minted mascot made his debut at a Pediatric Developmental Center of a hospital near Wrigley Field. Clark, a young bear wearing a Cubs jersey and backward blue baseball cap, was accompanied Monday at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center by a dozen team prospects. The mascot is named after the North Side Chicago street on which Wrigley Field is located. Team officials say they held focus groups before deciding on Clark, and fans told them they wanted a more family-friendly atmosphere at Wrigley Field. Clark will greet fans at Wrigley before and during games, and the mascot will have a Twitter account and Facebook page. BARCELONA, Spain -- Neymar scored twice to help Barcelona beat Villarreal 2-1 and take advantage of Real Madrids slip as it opened up a five-point lead over its fierce rival at the top of the Spanish league on Saturday. Third-place Madrid fell behind and settled for a 2-2 draw earlier at Osasuna in a match both sides finished with 10 men, and Barcelona didnt let the chance escape. Barcelona, still without the injured Lionel Messi, again turned to Neymar after his hat trick against Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday to convert a penalty on the half-hour mark and restore the lead in the 68th after Villarreal levelled. Barcelonas eighth win in as many league games at Camp Nou this season provisionally lifted it three points clear of Atletico Madrid before it hosts Valencia on Sunday. "We played well and knew how to pull out of the game," Barcelona coach Gerardo Martino said. Other than Alex Songs shot off the upright from a corner kick six minutes in, the first half was a rather monotonous display of "tiki-taka" passing by Barcelona. But all of Villarreals discipline in defence was undone when right back Mario Perez used his arm to block Jordi Albas pass, letting Neymar step up and stroke in the spot kick. Villarreal didnt muster a shot on goal until defender Mateo Musacchio outmanoeuvred Marc Bartra to thump in a corner kick three minutes after halftime to unexpectedly even the score. The pace picked up with Giovani Dos Santos going close for the visitors before Neymar put Barcelona back in charge when he tapped in Alexis Sanchezs short pass following his control of Cesc Fabregas lobbed throughball. Besides missing Messi as his hamstring heals, Barcelona will be without Neymar for next Sundays game at Getafe after he received his fifth yellow card of the season, meaning he must serve a one-game suspension. Osasunas Oriol Riera headed in goals in the 16th and 39th before Madrids woes deepened when Sergio Ramos received his second yellow card in the 44th. With Cristiano Ronaldo unable to extend his eight-game scoring run for club and country, midfielder Isco Alarcon pulled one back before halftime and passed for Pepe to head home the 80th-minute equalizer seconds after Osasunas Francisco Silva also earned his second boooking.dddddddddddd. "The team demonstrated it has a good attitude, but a draw is like a loss for us," Madrid defender Marcelo said. "We knew that the result wasnt good enough but we reacted too late." Madrids five-game winning run in the league ended at Reyno de Navarra Stadium, where it has only one victory in its last six visits. Osasuna, which sits just two points above the relegation zone, has held both Barcelona and Madrid to draws there this season. After Ronaldo missed two chances, Osasuna struck first when right back Marc Bertran dribbled by his marker and swung a cross to the far post where Riera was left unmarked to redirect the ball into the net. Madrid momentarily lost both its verve in attack and composure in defence, and both centre backs Pepe and Sergio Ramos got yellow cards. Riera was left free to finish off the rebound of Damia Abellas header from a corner kick that goalkeeper Diego Lopez sprung to palm off his line. And Ramos soon saw his second yellow card on a questionable decision when Osasunas Roberto Torres fell after colliding with his arm. "Our first 20 minutes were very good. Its unbelievable that we were then down 0-2 and playing with 10 men," Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti said. "Its difficult to explain." Just when Madrid was at its lowest, Ronaldo dribbled into the Osasuna defence and laid off for Isco to place a right-footed strike just inside the upright and pull one back before the break. Osasuna still appeared set for victory after a placid second half until Silva earned himself two yellow cards in a four-minute span. Isco found the hole left in the defence which Pepe exploited to score Madrids second and salvage a point. Elsewhere, Granada moved into the upper half of the standings by prevailing 2-0 at 10-man Rayo Vallecano in an error-plagued match, which included Granadas Youssef El Arabi wasting a golden chance, Rayo letting Fran Ricos harmless cross bounce into its net, and Rayo defender Ignacio Martinez drawing a second yellow for diving in the box. Malaga edged Getafe 1-0 at home to get a much-needed win and take some pressure off first-year coach Bernd Schuster. Striker Roque Santa Cruz went on in the 74th and a minute later headed in the winner. cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

Cincinnati, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - The season is officially over for Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, as the club placed him on injured reserve Tuesday. The 24-year-old has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery on Oct. 29 to have loose cartilage removed, after suffering an injury during a game against the Baltimore Ravens three days prior. At the time, head coach Marvin Lewis said Burfict was likely to return for a Nov. 16 game against New Orleans, but that did not come to pass. Burfict, who signed a new four-year contract this summer after leading the team in tackles each of his first two seasons, missed two games earlier this year because of concussions and also hurt his neck in a game against Indianapolis one week prior to his knee issue. The Arizona State product ends 2014 with 29 tackles in five appearances. In a corresponding roster move, Cincy activated quarterback A.J. McCarron from the reserve/non-football injury list. The Alabama product and rookie suffered a shoulder injury prior to the start of training camp which precluded his return to the field until now. He had been practicing with the club since it was granted a roster exception on Nov. 18. Nash added an assist on St. Louis second of the night, which came on a 5-on-3 with 3:48 remaining after Washington nearly overcame a 3-0 deficit on third- period goals by Evgeny Kuznetsov and Alex Ovechkin. Derek Brassard and Mats Zuccarello added two assists and Henrik Lundqvist made 30 saves for the red-hot Rangers, with 19 of those stops coming in the final period. The team is playing good, we are winning games, and its a great feeling in here, St. Louis said. We did a good job of going out there and earning it every day. Weve taken nothing for granted. We take care of the opponents and we play seriously and weve been rewarded with some good plays. Braden Holtby turned aside 23 shots in the loss, the Capitals first in regulation since Dec. 2. Washington entered the Metropolitan Division matchup 7-0-2 in its last nine games. The Rangers owned a seemingly comfortable 3-0 lead after Nash secured a loose puck in the neutral zone and beat a screened Holtby stick-side in transition 5:12 into the third period. However, a Washington offense that had been mostly lifeless up until then suddenly came to life. Just 41 seconds after Nashs tally, Kuznetsov raced up the right side and fired a shot that handcuffed Lundqvist and trickled through. The Capitals received a power play less than four minutes later, and Ovechkin converted the chance with a well-placed rocket from the left circle and hit the right post and went in with 9:02 to play. A high-sticking penalty to Nickklas Backstrom with 5:25 left stalled Washingtons momentum, however, and Jason Chimera was sent off for a violation on the resulting faceoff to give New York a two-man advantage.dddddddddddd. Nash rifled a shot on the 5-on-3 that bounced off both the post and Holtbys glove, with St. Louis perfectly placed in front to poke in the rebound for a 4-2 lead. I really liked our effort, I liked our determination, said Capitals head coach Barry Trotz. We took some penalties at the end, but when the game was on the line I thought Lundqvist was really good for them. The Rangers struck first just 3:32 into a first period in which Washington managed just five shots. Brassard led a rush into the Capitals zone before sending a pass to Zuccarello, whose off-balance shot caromed off Nashs left ankle and trickled past Holtby. Its about winning, and hes helping us in a big way to win games, said Lundqvist of Nash. A boarding penalty to Ovechkin early in the second enabled New York to extend the lead just 36 seconds into the advantage, on St. Louis tough- angle one-timer into an open right side of the Washington net. Game Notes The seven-game streak is the Rangers longest since a seven-gamer from Oct. 31-Nov. 15, 2011 ... New York improved to 10-2-1 against Metropolitan Division clubs and has earned at least a point in 11 straight divisional games ... Ovechkins goal was the 438th of his career, breaking a tie with Pavel Bure for the third-most by a Russian-born player in NHL history... Zuccarello now has 111 career points, tying Espen Knutsen for the most by a Norwegian-born player ... Capitals defenseman John Carlson assisted on both Washington goals. cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

DOHA, Qatar -- A chest injury prevented Darren Clarke from teeing up in his 500th European Tour event at the Qatar Masters on Wednesday. Clarke was injured while practicing on the Doha Golf Club range after the pro-am on Tuesday. The Northern Irishman arrived at the course on Wednesday hoping to start, but after hitting a few balls on the practice putting green Clarke advised officials he was not fit to play. Clarke, who was set to become the 25th player to compete in 500 tour events, headed back to his hotel and a flight home. "Its disappointing Darrens had to withdraw as the tour was looking forward to honouring his 500th tournament with a presentation before he teed off this morning," tournament director David Probyn said. "We will just have to wait now until Darren next competes in a European Tour event." That will be the Masters at Augusta National from April 10, with Clarke taking up the third year of a five-year exemption in capturing the 2011 British Open. United when it travels to Columbus for a Major League Soccer clash with the Crew on Saturday.BOSTON -- Carey Price was all-world in goal and P.K. Subban delivered a double-overtime dagger with a blast from the blue line as the Montreal Canadiens held off the hard-charging Boston Bruins for a wild 4-3 win in the opening game of their second-round playoff series. No wallflower, Subban savoured the spotlight Thursday after scoring two power-play goals and leading all skaters with 33 minutes 49 seconds of ice time. But the slick-skating defenceman with the big shot was also keeping things in perspective. Is there a better feeling than scoring a double-overtime winner, he was asked? "Im sure theres a better feeling," the 24-year-old said after pausing to reflect. "Winning the Cup. "Thats one win for us (tonight) but were going to need a lot more to have the Holy Grail feeling." Job 1 in Game 2 on Saturday is helping Price out more. The Canadiens goalie with ice in his veins faced 51 shots, compared to 33 for Tuukka Rask at the other end. "We cant be giving up 50-plus shots," said Subban. Price deserved the victory after staving off the Bruins comeback the way he did, he added. "When a guys standing on his head like that, youve got to find a way to win. It doesnt matter who it is." Subbans second power-play goal of the game came from the point through traffic at four minutes 17 seconds, silencing the sellout TD Garden crowd of 17,565, some of whom responded by tossing garbage on the ice. Matt Bartkowski was in the box for holding, as he was for Subbans first score. Rene Bourque and Francis Bouillon also scored for Montreal, which outshot Boston 4-1 in the final OT period. Reilly Smith, Torey Krug and Johnny Boychuk had Bostons goals. A smiling Subban, whose ice time can be regulated by coach Michel Therrien depending on performance, said there was a simple reason for his success. "I think that Im always playing my best when I play a lot," he said somewhat mischievously. Subban also loves a big stage, and he delivered Thursday. "A really solid game for us," Therrien said of Subban. Down 2-0 after 40 minutes, Boston came on strong in the third to force overtime. Boston threw everything it had at Price, who kept the Canadiens in it while extending the roller-coaster game. Price combined brilliance with a little luck in holding back the rampant Bruins. "It was a battle," Price said. "It was exactly what we were expecting. We just gutted it out. It was a hard-fought game. It could have gone either way." Boston nearly won it in the first overtime when a puck leaked through Prices pads but somehow deflected off the post through the crease. A pad save by Price saved the day later in the period and the sprawling Montreal goalie robbed David Krejci on a backhand from in close minutes later. Rask stopped Lars Eller at the other end to extend the game. Then Habs winger Brendan Gallagher cleared the puck out of the crease to keep the Bruins out. Boston outshot Montreal 14-6 in the first overtime period for a 50-29 overall edge. The final count was 51-33. "I made some saves but I couldnt make the game-savers as you say," said Rask, whose career mark against Montreal in Boston fell to 0-9. Bruins coach Claude Julien was calm in the face of the loss. "This is just Game 1 here. You dont get frustrated after just one game," said Julien, who had no complaints with the two overtime penalties called against his team. "I didnt mind the way our team played tonight. We had lots of chances. Sure we fell behind 2-0 but we showed some resiliency and came back. I thought we carried the play for the most part." "The only thing is we have to find a way to bury those great opportunities that we had," he added. "Thats probably where there are some regrets." The second overtime opened with Bostons Daniel Paille in the box for tripping but the Habs failed to take advantage. Rask had to be sharp soon after though to glove a Tomas Plekanec shot from the slot. It had looked like Bouillons knuckleball goal at 12:09 of the third would be enough to help the shell-shocked Canadiens stave off the Boston comeback as Montreal went ahead 3-2. But the Bruins continued to throw everything at the Habs and Boychuks slapshot from the point with 1:58 remaining continued Bostons tsunami-like late rally. Smith and Krug had scored early third-period goals to pull Boston even at 2-2 before Bouillons shot from the top of the faceoff circle, on a rare Montreal attack in the period, handcuffed Rask. It was just the third career playoff goal for the 38-year-oldd Bouillon.dddddddddddd. Boston outshot Montreal 14-6 in the third and 36-23 over three periods. Subban and Bourque scored in the first and second periods for Montreal, which made the most of its offensive opportunities while riding the broad shoulders of Price against a Boston team that spent much of the night on attack without much to show for it. Price made a string of key saves, including some keys stops late in the game -- a few of which he didnt know too much about. It was a nail-biting finale, however, as Boston turned the screws on the Canadiens. Smith finally beat Price on Bostons 24th shot, firing a shot from near the boards through the legs of a Habs defenceman and through two players tangled up in front of the Montreal goal at 2:44 of the third period. Subban went to the box for interference 34 seconds later but the Canadiens survived. Only briefly, however. A trailing Krug, on a nice setup from Milan Lucic as his linemates crashed the goal, beat Price with a slapshot at 6:30 on Bostons 25th shot. Montreal was living dangerously as Bruins circled Prices goal like sharks. Lucic missed a near open goal midway through the third only to see Bouillon score at the other end as Montreal crashed the next and the puck found its way back to the defenceman. Both teams were well rested coming in. The Canadiens were off for eight days, having completed a sweep of the Tampa Bay Lighting on April 22. The Bruins last game was April 26 when they dispatched the Detroit Red Wings in five games. Therrien said his team looked rusty from the layoff . But he took solace in the success of his power play, as well as the play of Price and Subban. Montreal holds a 24-9 edge overall in playoff series between the two but Boston has won six of the last nine. Boston.com celebrated the history by publishing a gallery of "30 pictures of Bruins and Canadiens beating the hell out of each other." The game, the opening salvo of the NHLs second round of the playoffs, started at a high pace with few stoppages and the Bruins pressing after taking the ice to a sea of yellow rally towels and trademark over-the-top anthem renditions from Rene Rancourt. Boston pest Brad Marchand, who skipped the morning skate, was back in action and looking to annoy. But Price was up for all-comers, stopping Gregory Campbell in close and making a good glove save on Smith midway as the Bruins came from all angles. The much maligned Montreal power play connected at 11:23 of the first period with Bartkowski off for tripping. Marchand and Patrice Bergeron did their job, majestically killing off the first half of the penalty but the Habs took advantage when the two went off. Subban sent in a wrist shot through traffic for a Montreal lead that went against the run of play -- and came seconds after a pair of in-close saves from Rask It was Subbans fourth game with a point but his first goal since March 23. And it shut up the Boston fans who had been booing him from the puck drop. Montreal was 19th over the season on the power play with a 17.2 per cent success rate, compared to third for Boston (21.7 per cent). The Canadiens went 0 for 23 over the final eight games of the season with the man advantage and scored on only two of 13 chances against Tampa. Krug, trying to play cat and mouse with Price later in the period, hung onto the puck in the slot after a nifty tic-tac-toe passing play in the hope that the Habs goalie would make a move. But the sphinx-like Price waited him out and made the save. Subban led all skaters with nine minutes three seconds of ice time and three hits in the first period, which saw Boston outshoot Montreal 13-10. The Bruins continued to attack early in the second but Montreal doubled its lead on an opportunistic counter-attack after a puck bounced off Krugs foot to Bourque at centre ice. Bourque headed towards goal on a three-on-one and ripped a wrist shot through Rask at 3:38 for his fourth of the post-season. Marchand played as if he had a chip the size of a grand piano on his shoulder, whacking Habs with his stick or offering a glove face-wash. But there was also a sandpaper side to the visitors who looked to take a piece out of towering Bruins captain Zdeno Chara at every opportunity. At times they bounced right off the big man but Chara had a target on his back. Boston pressure resulted in a holding penalty to Josh Gorges with 5:44 remaining in the second. Jarome Iginla had two glorious chances from in close but one was stopped by an amazing Price pad save and the other went wide. Then defenceman Dougie Hamilton rang a shot off the post and Carl Soderberg was denied. cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

Defence wins Championships. Prevailing wisdom has always suggested such, no matter the sport. Is there reason to question this sentiment? The team with the least goals against has won the Premier League six times in the last decade. An impressive record and standing example for the merits of superior defensive play. Chelsea at present time boasts a league-best 21 goals against, six goals better than the next best team defensively; giving good reason they are currently atop the table. Jose Mourinho continues to be praised as a tactical genius, getting the most out of his inherited squad of millionaires. The woe, is me, little horse approach by Mourinho is comical. Chelsea remains among the worlds top spenders with virtually unlimited resources. Mourinho deploys a stifling, boring, and ultra-conservative approach because its his way of controlling a match, giving what he believes the best chance to win the battle and the war. Thankfully for Jose, the talent of the likes of Hazard and Oscar mask what often times is negative football. Other managers do not get equal acclaim as the Special One. Thats unfortunate. There is more than one way to win in football. In fact, in a higher tempo, physically demanding and end-to-end nature of the Premier League, goals-for has proven a more decisive determinant to league glory than defensive record. The team with the most goals scored has won the league all but twice in the last decade. If we want to operate in the world of clichés, than perhaps a good offence is the best defence. While the Mourinho defensive model has merit, more attractive attacking football wins as well. At the end of the day, fans want victories. They want titles. All things being equal, managers with bravery to open things up and go for it in an expansive brand of football is the ultimate combination. Queue Liverpool Football Club, 2013-14. A team without the resources of Chelsea are keeping pace in the Premier League, not through a boring, grinding and grating brand of football. Under Brendan Rodgers, purposeful ball possession and decisive attack rules the day. In less than two years under his watch, Liverpool has gone from a team struggling to build from the back, failing to play the ball on the ground and void of identity not labeled hard-working. This team has morphed into the most exciting, ruthless team in front of goal in the BPL. Dreadful defensively, it has not mattered. Liverpool is fourth in the table and is more likely to challenge for the title rather than fall out of the top four. Only Newcastle has a worse defensive record in the top 11. While a dip in form has been projected by most, there is no such demise in sight. Liverpool has scored an incredible league best 70 goals in 27 games; 21 better than leaders Chelsea and almost double that of fifth place Tottenham (36). The Reds have scored 19 goals in their last six games. Luis Suarez who leads the league in goals (23) has only scored once in that span. Daniel Sturridge has been a revelation, automatic in front of goal with 18 in 19 games. Much credit goes to SAS. But in fairness, a team approach with superior movement on and off the ball has created an incredible number of chances. Only Manchester City has created more chances than Liverpools 352. They have the most assists and are top five in virtually every passing category. Theres no quantifiable statistic to gauge team belief. But every time Liverpool is in and around the area, there is a genuine threat they are going to score. Manchester City gets the plaudits for their attacking approach. Liverpool hardly have the superstar talent outside of Suarez, but are every bit the attacking powerhouse. The triangles across the field, movement and vision on how to use the space are Rodgers greatest influence. Stout defensive play is a work in progress. They have more defensive errors than any team in the Premier League. Rodgers is adamant its the players and not the system to blame for defensive frailties. "The problem is it is not coaching. Some of the things we concede goals in, you cant coach that. Theres a feel when you are in the game of how to defend and you have to use your experience to defend properly," explained Rodgers. And hes absolutely right. First choice wing-backs Glen Johnson and Luis Enrique have missed long stretches through injury, but neither are reliable defensively. Daniel Agger and Martin Skrtel are both inconsistent and have been linked to moves elsewhere for quite some time. Kolo Toure is a turtle. And the rest fail to provide any confidence in front of goalkeeper Simon Mignolet. Rodgers has tried everything to cover up the deficiencies. Formations featuring 3, 4, or 5 at the back have been deployed, all to varying levels of success and failure. The system has been less important than the consistency in approach. Through the misgivings, there is an understanding how the team is going to play. And the insistence on getting up the field down the wings, with Steven Gerrard playing a deeper role, sitting on top of the back four has been important for shape. The team will continue to evolve as Rodgers finds suitable defenders. It will be critical this summer to find replacements. Important for Liverpool is the direction is clear with team style and approach already determined. A strong has offence is equally important as stingy defence in all sport. League leaders in Germany, France, Italy and Spain have all scored the most goals. In the NFL, the Broncos number one offence got to the Super Bowl, only to come up short against the Seahawks number one defence. Heading in, the offence was favoured. The Boston Red Sox led Major League Baseball in offense last year and won the World Series. Liverpool is four points out with 11 to go. The three teams above them are all competing in other competitions. Liverpool can stay fresh with no distraction. It would be truly a fairy tale story if they can pull this off. And could go down as the team with the weakest defence to ever win a Premier League title. Its all about the goals. Other Musings - In a matter of days the focus at Old Trafford has gone from Wayne Rooneys new £300,000 per week contract back to David Moyes under fire. While a new lucrative, record setting contract for Rooney was a no-brainer, what to do about Moyes is more difficult. Moyes was handed a six-year contract to be successor, hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson. The former manager regularly speaks out against rash managerial changes in the game. Ferguson preaches patience and consistency, much like the treatment he was given at United. That doesnt mean Moyes wasnt a mistake, or doesnt give any assurance he will be a success. United continues to fail to perform under Moyes. The product is not good enough. Other managers have had instant success with their new teams: Mourinho, Manuel Pellegrini, Carlo Ancelotti, and Pep Guardiola to name a few, managing teams in the same conversation as giants Manchester United. The excuse mongering for Moyes, whether it be the players or approach doesnt hold water. There are challenges for any new manager. It seems Moyes was ill prepared or ill equipped to deal with the task at hand. It seems Manchester United are ready to make it rain, splashing cash to compete with their fellow big boys in European football. But should Moyes be trusted to spend the war chest wisely? What experience does he have in doing so? And how much rope will he be given if next season starts poorly? Its a massive risk rolling with Moyes. Remaining loyal and committed to a manager is an honourable trait. But it only works when you have the right man. There has been nothing to suggest Moyes is the right fit other than the word of Sir Alex. A stubborn, bullish approach on Moyes isnt whats needed. Can Ferguson admit he potentially made a critical error in judgment on his successor? - Panic over poor English results in the first leg of the round of 16 in the Champions League have the knives out already. Its a referendum every year about what league is the best in the world, which is nonsense. There is no shame for Manchester City losing to Barcelona, and Arsenal to Bayern Munich, home or away. Both were beat by superior sides. Much plays into success and failure in the Champions League. Domestic schedule and form, fitness, proper officiating and a bit of luck are all needed in required in Europe. Only Manchester United can be seen as a disappointment after their first leg display. And funny enough, its United, along with Chelsea with the best chances of advancing. Its all about the match-up, not which domestic league is superior. - Southamptons Luke Shaw is deserved of his call-up to England for next weeks friendly against Denmark. The 18-year old has been superior to Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole and Kieran Gibbs at left back this campaign. The future is now for England. Age should not matter. Shaw at Brazil 2014 would be a step in the right direction. Billige Nike Air Max Dame . LOUIS -- Under coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead, the St. Nike Air Max Hvid Dame Tilbud . SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- North Carolina has beaten Michigan State, Kentucky and reigning national champion Louisville in this up-and-down season, but the Tar Heels were no match for No. 2 Syracuse. A strong start keyed by James Michael McAdoo vanished amid the Oranges flailing arms and diving bodies, and Syracuse beat UNC 57-45 on Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference marquee matchup. Forwards C.J. Fair and Jerami Grant combined for 32 points and 20 rebounds to pace the Orange, who shot a season-low 35 per cent (21 of 60) and still won handily, leading by as many as 19 late in the second half. "They got by and won a game shooting 35 per cent," said UNC coach Roy Williams, who dropped to 1-4 against Syracuse in his Hall of Fame career. "The first six or eight or 10 minutes, I thought we were aggressive. We were involved. I thought after that point they were just so much more aggressive than we were. It ends up a 12-point game, but it really was more than a 12-point game. "They had so much more intensity than we did." Not at the start. North Carolina attacked the middle of the Syracuse zone with great success at the outset, with McAdoo hitting a pair of jumpers and J.P. Tokoto another from the foul line as the Tar Heels gained an 8-4 lead in the first 4 minutes. "We started slow, let McAdoo get in the lane," Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. "Once we got back in front, our defence was good the whole game." The Orange regrouped after a timeout and went on a 17-5 run keyed by Fair and Grant, who did all the scoring. Fair, who had three early turnovers and was struggling at the start, hit a 3 from the wing and converted three free throws to give Syracuse a 19-15 lead, and two free throws by Grant completed a 10-0 spurt that put the Orange on top to stay, 21-15 at 8:53. The Tar Heels cooled off in a big way after the solid start, unable to penetrate inside. After Paige converted a three-point play with 13:04 left, UNC got only a fast-break slam dunk by McAdoo, a layup by Nate Britt and a jumper in the lane by Leslie McDonald in the ensuing 11 minutes and went into the locker room at halftime trailing 34-22. "Forr us, not being able to get looks -- we were successful early in the game.dddddddddddd Thats really on us, McAdoo said. "And also them being really good." Syracuse (16-0, 3-0 ACC) evened its all-time record against the North Carolina (10-6, 0-3) to 4-4. UNC started 0-2 in ACC play three times in the past five years and five times overall, and the loss to Syracuse equaled the worst conference start in school history in 1996-97, Dean Smiths final year as head coach. The last time North Carolina scored fewer than 45 points was in a 56-44 loss to eventual national champion Villanova in the Southeast Regional final of the 1985 NCAA tournament. The Tar Heels also beat North Carolina State 45-44 in February 1997. UNC shot 2 of 12 from behind the arc against the Syracuse zone and 20 of 51 (39.2 per cent) overall and was outrebounded 41-35, 17-10 on the offensive glass, netting just two second-chance points. "They were just playing harder," said Tokoto, who finished with three points on 1-of-6 shooting. "Thats pretty much what it was. We couldnt knock down the shots we needed to make and go on our run." The Tar Heels dont play again for a week, when they host Boston College. "Cant go backwards," Tokoto said. "Its on to the next game. Just got to look at the film, look at what we did wrong as a team, and where we can improve on." North Carolina was coming off a 63-57 home loss to Miami in which the Tar Heels shot just 31 per cent (20 for 65) and finished with a season-low scoring output against Miamis zone. This game, which featured teams with a combined 3,990 wins (UNC is third with 2,100 and Syracuse fifth with 1,890) was decided by a dominant first half by the Orange. Tyler Ennis finished with 10 points and seven assists to go with a season-high four turnovers, and Trevor Cooney had five steals and 10 points on 4-of-17 shooting. Rakeem Christmas contributed eight rebounds and had four of the Oranges nine blocks. Marcus Paige led North Carolina with 17 points and McAdoo had 15 points and nine rebounds. NEW YORK -- If Martin St. Louis wasnt a fan favourite during his first two months with the New York Rangers, he certainly became one during a very emotional weekend. St. Louis came to New York in March in a deal in which popular team captain Ryan Callahan was shipped to Tampa Bay. When he didnt light up the scoreboard right away, the Madison Square Garden crowd was slow to warm to him. That all changed Sunday night. Three days after the sudden death of his mother, St. Louis scored 3:34 in, and the Rangers avoided elimination for the second straight game by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series is Tuesday in Pittsburgh. New York advanced in the first round with a Game 7 win over Philadelphia. St. Louis rejoined his teammates for Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Friday, after a quick trip to Montreal to be with his family. That dedication inspired his teammates during a 5-1 win and carried over to Sunday. "Its probably one of the cooler things Ive been a part of in my professional career," said Derek Stepan, who earned the first assist on St. Louis goal. "The emotion on that goal is something that I will never forget." Fans were already chanting "Mar-ty, Mar-ty" on his first shift. The cheers got louder after he scored. St. Louis, the first star of the game, patted his heart when he came out to an ovation from the crowd. "Mothers Day, my dad is here, my sister is here," St. Louis said. "Its been a tough time for my whole family. To be able to get the lead in the first period, it was a good one." But not the prettiest of goals. St. Louis got in good position in front of the net. Stepan swiped at the puck in traffic and knocked it off St. Louis right leg and into the net. "I got a pretty good bounce," St. Louis said. "I know (my mother) helped me through this. Its a great win by the guys." Carl Hagelin pushed the Rangers lead to 2-0 just 2:51 later, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 36 shots to keep Pittsburgh at bay. Derick Brassard made it 3-1 in the second period. Brandon Sutter scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who got 26 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins, who led the series 3-1, failed in their first attempt to advance to the Eastern Conference finals with a 5-1 home loss on Friday. Now the pressure has shifted to them, and frustration is showing. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby took a penalty at the end of the second period that gave the Rangers a power play to start the third. Several scrums also broke out -- including one after the final buzzer. "With a minute left in the game, emotions run high," Crosby said. "I dont think thats why we lost. We put ourselves in a bad position early. We fought hard and tried to get back, but you cant continue to do that in the playoffs. You cant start like that." The team that has scored first has won every game. Under coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins are 1-7 at home when having a chance to clinch a series. Overall, the Penguins are 2-6 in Game 7s in Pittsburgh. On the flip side, the Rangers are 9-2 in their past 11 games when facing elimination, dating to Game 6 of the first round in 2012 at Ottawa. New York has never won a series it trailed 3-1 and has never beaten the Penguins in the playoffs. Buoyed by another early lead, the Rangers pressed for more, and got it on Hagelins unassisted goal at 6:25. Hagelins initial shot attempt from the left-wing boards was blocked by defenceman Rob Scuderi. Hagelin got to the loose puck in the centre of the left circle and sent a hard backhand sailing past Fleury for his fourth of the post-season. Bylsma burned his lone timeout to try to calm his team that was being outshot 7-2. Pittsburgh reversed that trend and cut its deficit in half before the end of the first. The Penguins started to gain momentum after they killed a roughing penalty against Jussi Jokinen and then received their first power play after Chris Kreider knocked down Jokinen at the edge of the crease with 8:40 left in the period. New York had built its shots edge to 12-3, but then helped the Penguins make the score 2-1. Sutter flung the puck toward the net, and it appeared to hit Rangers defenceman John Moore and then bounce in off the foot of defenceman Kevin Klein near the left post with 3:04 left. Lundqvist was clearly agitated by the late goal by Pittsburgh, which led 15-14 in shots in the first period. The teams both had chances in the middle period, and neither could connect on a pair of power plays. Pittsburgh twice challenged Lundqvist with short-handed breakaways, and the Rangers had a goal waved off at 5:55 when Kreider was called for goalie interference after he was shoved from behind into Fleury by Kris Letang. The Rangers made it 3-1 with 4:30 remaining in the period -- 25 seconds after Mats Zuccarello finished serving a tripping penalty. Brassard lunged, knocked the puck out of the air, and scored his third goal in two games and fourth in the series. Benoit Pouliot earned an assist, giving the line of Pouliot, Brassard, and Zuccarello 12 goals and 15 assists in 10 games -- regular season and playoffs -- against Pittsburgh. The Goldeyes dropped a doubleheader to the St. Paul Saints on Wednesday in front of 5,936 spectators at Shaw Park and as a result, the Goldeyes are now in a battle for first place in the American Associations North Division. Not long ago the Fish had an 9 1/2 game lead on St. Paul, but after losing the opener of the Twin Bill 5-2, then dropping the night cap 4-0, the Goldeyes find themselves only 3 1/2 games ahead of the Saints with a huge game coming up against St. Paul on Thursday at Noon. "You know, in the second game we hit the ball pretty well, but it was one of those games when everything you hit hard is right at somebody," said Goldeyes shortstop Tyler Kuhn. "Actually, their pitchers did a real good job in both games of pounding the strike zone. They didnt give up many free passes (only four walks in two games, none in Game 2) and that makes it tough. They pitched really well." With the loss, the Fish fell to 36-22 on the season while St. Paul improved to 32-25. The Goldeyes had won 11 straight in late June and early July, but in the first 10 games of an 11-game homestand, the Goldeyes have now gone 2-8. In the second game of the doubleheaderr on Wednesday night, the Goldeyes couldnt muster any offense.dddddddddddd They scratched out five hits and had runners in scoring position only twice. St. Paul scored a run in the third, one more in the fourth and then put it away with a bases-loaded single by No. 8-hitter Jared McDonald that drove in a pair of runs. St. Paul starter Jeff Shields (5-4, 2.96 ERA) pitched a complete-game shutout and earned the win while Goldeyes starter Gabe Aguilar (5-2, 3.03 ERA) suffered the loss. In the opener, the Goldeyes built an early 2-0 lead, but couldnt hold on. In the second inning, Donnie Webb singled, stole second and scored on a single by Reggie Abercrombie. After a ground out and a walk, Abercrombie scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Tyler Kuhn. But St. Paul battled back to tie it up in the fifth and then Jake Taylor won it with a three-run homer off Nick Hernandez in the sixth. St. Paul starter Drew Gay (3-0, 2.65 ERA) got the win, while Hernandez (5-2, 4.03 ERA) took the loss. Mikey Mehlich picked up his first save of the year for the Saints. The Goldeyes and Saints will play the fifth and final game of this series at Noon on Thursday. Ethan Hollingsworth (3-0, 4.55 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg while Robert Coe (4-4, 6.75 ERA) will take to the bump for St. Paul. cheap jerseys cheap jerseys wholesale jerseys cheap nfl jerseys wholesale jerseys Landon Donovan Jersey ' ' '

DALLAS -- The Dallas Stars got a huge lift from Tim Thomas after a big hit knocked Kari Lehtonen out of the game. Erik Cole scored on a breakaway with 4:49 to play, and the Stars rallied to defeat the Minnesota Wild 4-3 on Saturday night. Lehtonen injured his head in a collision with the Wilds Erik Haula at 6:37 of the third period. Haula was given a major penalty for charging -- Lehtonens helmet came off as he fell backward into the crossbar -- and was ejected. Tyler Seguin scored with 26 seconds remaining in the 5-minute power play to tie the game at 3. "Obviously, not good," Stars coach Lindy Ruff said. "(Haula) went in hard, (Lehtonen) hit the crossbar hard. Likelihood, its a concussion on just a dirty play. He should be suspended. "Fourth-liner takes out our goaltender." The newly acquired Thomas stopped all six shots he faced for the win in his Stars debut in relief. The Stars acquired the 39-year-old goalie from the Florida Panthers at Wednesdays trade deadline, giving them another seasoned goalie. "For me, Tim looked calm in there," Ruff said. "He made some plays that maybe younger goaltenders wouldnt make. That was vintage Tim Thomas. Hes lived it and he knows how to play." With the game tied at 3, Cole picked up a loose puck at centre ice and Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper came out to stop him, but Coles shot went past Kuemper and into the upper left corner. Cole also assisted on Seguins tying goal. "We fought hard all game long and kept battling back and were able to grab the lead," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. "And then all of sudden you take a 5-minute major and another mistake after that and you find yourself down, so its tough." Wild defenceman Keith Ballard had the turnover that led to Coles goal. "Bad read on my part," Ballard said. "I dont know if I telegraphed it a little bit or I just kind of misjudged how high he was playing in the D zone. Obviously, the guy picked it off." Both the tying and winning goals were scored under a banner raised before the game to honour Mike Modano, the franchises all-time scoring leader. Seguin also had two assists, giving him four goals and four assists in two games. Jamie Benn and Alex Chiasson also scored for Dallas. Haula scored in the first period and Charlie Coyle in the second. Kyle Brodziak gave the Wild their only lead in the third. The Stars, eighth in the Western Conference, moved within three points of the seventh-place Wild. Minnesota had won five in a row. Dallas also increased the lead over No. 9 Phoenix to three points. "With the 5-minute power play right off the bat," Thomas said, "it kind of allowed me to settle in and adjust and think the rest of it through to be like, Man, this would be a very important win to us." Before the game, the Stars retired Modanos No. 9 in front of a Dallas-record crowd of 19,109. The Stars then scored just 31 seconds into the game. Rich Peverley dropped a pass to Jamie Benn in the right circle for a wrist shot into the right side of the net. "Its I think one of the biggest days in franchise history when you put a guy like that up in the rafters and then you cap it off with that type of game," Ruff said. "I think they were pumped by watching some of the video, some of the Mike stuff. I know I was because theres some dynamic goals there you get to watch." Added Seguin: "I think if anything that motivated me, thats a true character guy, a big leader, an incredible hockey player and now a legend. Watching his jersey go up and seeing that (1999) Stanley Cup again, I think the only thing it did was make me more motivated and I think the guys felt the same." The Wild tied it on Haulas short-handed goal at 16:32. But the Stars regained the lead 4 seconds into a power play at 1:55 of the second period. That snapped a streak of 20 successful penalty kills by the Wild over eight games. Kuemper, who was making his 16th consecutive start, had 34 saves. Lehtonen made 26 saves. The run support he received from his teammates was quite out of character. Ross threw seven shutout innings Saturday night, and the light-hitting Padres hit three homers in a 6-0 victory that snapped New Yorks four-game winning streak. "Weve talked about the maturity, the development of Tyson the last month or so," Padres manager Bud Black said. "About what it means to be one of those guys at the front end of the rotation, to stop losing streaks and put zeroes on the board, to really throw great games, to really shut down opponents. "He is starting to do that." Ross (8-10) allowed only four hits in his first start following his first All-Star appearance. He struck out six and issued three walks. Three relievers pitched the final two innings to seal the Padres seventh shutout. Yasmani Grandal, Will Venable and Seth Smith homered as San Diego won for the third time in 11 games. The Mets had won nine of 11. That the Padres became offensive when Ross was pitching was the news. In his previous eight starts, the Padres scored more than one run only once, in a 3-0 win on July 2 against the Reds. Overall, they had scored only five runs in that span. "Its always a little bit easier pitching with a lead," Ross said. "Its more comfortable and you dont have to worry about making mistakes and being down. "Yasmani came up with a big homer early, and the guys followed through from there. It was a good team win." New Yorks Dillon Gee (4-2) worked five innings, allowing four runs and five hits in his second start since missing two months with a strained right lat. Gee struck out eight with no walks. Ross didnt surrender a hit in the first four innings. His bid to throw the first no-hitter in Padres history was derailed by Travis dArnauds four-hopper that ricocheted off third base for an infield single. The Mets were stymied by Ross mid-90s fastball, tight sinker and a biting slider. "He had great stuff," New York manager Terry Collinss said.dddddddddddd "That is why he is on the All-Star team." The Mets didnt have a runner reach scoring position until the seventh when Lucas Duda singled, Kirk Nieuwenhuis walked and Juan Lagares singled to load the bases. But Ruben Tejada struck out to end the threat. Gee was stranded on first after a two-out walk in the second inning, and dArnaud was erased at second on a double play after his single in the fifth. Pinch-hitter Eric Young Jr. walked with one out in the sixth inning, but was thrown out by Grandal when he tried to steal second. Curtis Granderson followed with the Mets second hit, but Daniel Murphy grounded out to Ross. Smiths homer in the sixth pushed the Padres ahead 5-0. Venable hit his first home run since June 10 in the fourth inning, extending the Padres lead to 4-0. "It was a little weird. Just a bad night," Gee said. San Diego took a 3-0 lead in the third inning, thanks to a big hit by Headley and a bad throw by Nieuwenhuis. Headleys one-out single scored Ross, and when Nieuwenhuis relay to third base landed in the Mets dugout, Alexi Amarista, who had singled, scored, as well. Grandal staked Ross to a 1-0 edge in the second inning with his eighth homer, a 440-foot blast to right-centre. "I didnt see the swing but I heard it," Ross said. "It was loud." NOTES: After Fridays trade of RHP Huston Street to the Angels, RHP Joaquin Benoit will become the Padres closer. RHP Kevin Quackenbush is the top candidate to work the eighth inning. ... LOS ANGELES -- The Clippers tuned up for the playoffs with a clinic on scoring in transition, whether it was going coast-to-coast for layups or ferocious dunks. The display produced a 117-101 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Saturday, giving the Clippers their franchise record-tying 56th win of the regular season. Blake Griffin had 27 points and nine assists, DeAndre Jordan had 21 points and nine rebounds, and Chris Paul added 17 points and 10 assists. "Were still playing for something," Paul said. "We can keep building confidence on defence. Were at our best when were running and getting stops." J.J. Redick had 13 points and Matt Barnes scored 12 in helping the Clippers improve to 33-7 at Staples Center, breaking the franchise record for home victories in a season. "When we got stops, got out and moved the ball from side to side, we were able to get what we wanted," Griffin said. "Thats the key for us, just playing our offence and not letting what they do dictate our game." Los Angeles completed a season sweep of the Kings and has won seven straight against them at home. "I just hated our defence," Sacramento coach Mike Malone said. DeMarcus Cousins had his seventh straight double-double with 32 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Kings, who lost their fifth in a row in their last road game of the season. Rudy Gay scored 16 points, and former Clipper Reggie Evans had 14 points and 14 rebounds. Cousins and Ben McLemore combined to score 24 of the Kings 32 points in the third quarter, including their last 20. McLemore hit consecutive 3-pointers, the second one just beating the clock at the end of the period, to leave the Kings trailing 85-79 going into the fourth. "We couldnt get any stops," Malone said. "Defensively, they just got whatever they wanted. It was just layup after layup after layup." McLemore finished with 14 points, hitting all six of his free throws, before getting his second technical and being ejected with 10:51 left in the game. "Thats the crazy thing about it," he said. "Ive never gotten kicked out of a game in my life." The Kings closed within two on a three-point play by Cousins in the fourth. The Clippers answered with a 12-2 run to go up 103-91, capped by Jamal Crawfords back-to-back 3-pointers. He landed in the lap of courtside fans after the first one. "Those two 3s Mal hit were backbreakers," Paul said. Crawford returned after missing five straight games with a sore left Achilles tendon. He finished with 10 points in 20 minutes. "I felt good, rusty obviously, but my teammates did a good job getting me easy looks," he said. Los Angeles outscored the Kings 25-5 on fastbreak points and 54-42 in the paint. "When a team lives in your paint, especially a good team like they are, youre going to have a hard time beating them," Malone said. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- With six losses on their resume, the New York Giants could have been wondering if they would ever win a game this season. Instead, they searched within to see what they are made of. "The players and coaches have great pride in what were doing," Eli Manning said Monday night after -- at last -- the teams first victory, 23-7 over the Minnesota Vikings. "We just had to keep going, get rid of some of the mistakes, and play the way we need to play." They were efficient, if not overwhelming, which is all they needed to be against the mistake-prone Vikings (1-5). The Giants began the season as the team turning over the ball (minus-16 difference) while showing little penchant for playing defence. But against the Vikings, they had three takeaways to one lost fumble. Peterson, the leagues MVP last season and a 2,000-yard rusher, was held to 28 yards five days after his 2-year-old son was buried in South Dakota. The man accused in the death was indicted on second-degree murder and manslaughter charges, prosecutors said Monday. "It was tough sledding. We couldnt get anything established up front," Peterson said. "I was focused on preparing for the game, unfortunately it didnt work out the way we wanted to. It was tough. The defence made it hard." Peterson was not helped by a rusty Josh Freeman, making his debut as Vikings quarterback after being signed as a free agent when Tampa Bay cut the 2009 first-round draft pick. Freeman frequently missed open receivers, and several of his throws sailed yards beyond his targets. Coach Leslie Frazier said he considered taking out Freeman, but that the score was close enough for him to stick with his new QB. Josh Brown kicked three field goals and Rueben Randle caught a 24-yard TD pass for New York (1-6). "For us, we cant look too much past a win and a step in the right direction," defensive tackle Cullen Jenkins said. "We cant look beyond the next step." Marcus Sherels provided Minnesotas points with an 86-yard punt return, but his fumble without being hit during a runback midway in the third quarter set up New York at the Vikings 3. Peyton Hillis, signed last Wednesday with the Giants in dire need of running backs, surged in from the 1 for a 17-7 lead -- New Yorks biggest in 2013. The lead grew on Browns 23-yard field goal to finish off a 16-play, 75-yard drive, and to 23-7 on his 36-yarder. Another Vikings mistake handed those points to the Giants: Rookie Sharrif Floyd, a defensive tackle of all things, fumbled at Minnesotas 18 while returning a short kickoff. "We needed to get one on the board," defensive end Justin Tuck said. "I told (general manager) Jerry Reese that I think we have a shovel to start digging our way out of this hole. Hopefully, tonight is something we can build off. Its still a long way to climb out of this hole. But this was something that we could get the ball rolling." The Giants controlled the clock and the ball for most of the opening quarter and led 3-0 when Sherels broke his spectacular punt return -- the third against the Giants this season. He sped down the left sideline virtually untouched, then twice faked out punter Steve Weatherford. By the time Weatherford reached Sherels, it was at the goal line -- where Weatherford brought him down with a horse-collar tackle. Minnesota had a total of 8 yards on punt runbacks heading into Monday night. But Sherels set a team mark with 119. Before Sherels sprint, New York had gone 17 plays and used up the first 9:36, but bogged down at the 16 and Brown made a 35-yard field goal. And one play after Minnesota hurt itself on rookie Xavier Rhodes 23-yard pass interference penalty, Manning threw a laser to a leaping Randle in the left corner of the end zone for a 10-7 lead. It was the first time New York led at halftime all season. The defence held Peterson to 9 yards rushing on eight carries, and he didnt do much more in the second half. Manning, who led the league with 15 interceptions, didnt throw one for the first time all season. And while Freeman was picked only one time, by Antrel Rolle, he looked like someone who hadnt played in more than a month. "A lot of the plays were just a hair off," Freeman said. Freeman finished 20 of 53 for 190 yards. Manning was 23 for 39 for 200 yards. NOTES: Giants centre David Baas, who missed the last three games with a neck injury, returned but soon was sidelined by a knee problem. Hell have an MRI on Tuesday. ... The Wild coach has had to navigate key injuries to his roster, his own growing pains in his first NHL head coaching job and the considerable expectations brought forth when the teams owner spent nearly $200 million on two players two summers ago. The Wild have improved under Yeo in each season, and Yeo has improved himself enough to earn the faith of the Wild leadership going forward. Yeo signed a multi-year contract extension with the Wild on Saturday, the team announced. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but the agreement was expected after Yeo guided the team out of the first round of the playoffs for just the second time in franchise history in the final year of his original deal. He has gone 104-82-26 in three seasons with the Wild. "Mike has done a very good job the last three seasons as our head coach and we look forward to his leadership going forward," Wild general manager Chuck Fletcher said. Yeo was an unproven coach with no NHL head coaching track record to go by when Fletcher picked him to take over for Todd Richards three seasons ago. The Wild faded after a strong start to Yeos first season and never found a rhythm in his second year, an abbreviated 48-game schedule due to the lockout. The Wild did snap a five-season playoff drought in his second season, but were dominated by Chicago in a first-round deffeat.dddddddddddd His status was tenuous at best by New Years Eve last season, when the Wild lost their sixth straight game and Yeo felt compelled at the next practice to tell the players he wouldnt coach simply to save his job. But despite foot injuries that kept stars Zach Parise and Mikko Koivu and key defenceman Jared Spurgeon out for long stretches of the winter, Yeo helped hold the group together while the wins picked up. The Wild played all season with a carousel in the net, too, with four different goalies starting 10 games each or more. "There were times where the wheels couldve come off, and he kept it together," said defenceman Ryan Suter, one of several players to endorse Yeo after the season-ending loss to Chicago. The Wild solidified his status in the playoffs with a seven-game victory over Colorado in the first round when the Avalanche led 2-0 and 3-2 in the series. They gave the Blackhawks a fight, too, until falling in six games. The late-season surge, and Yeos impressive strategic decisions both rounds of the playoffs, gave Fletcher the faith that he had the right man for the job. "I am very excited to continue to coach the Minnesota Wild and pursue a Stanley Cup for the State of Hockey," Yeo said.
