The Saskatchewan Roughriders didnt wait long to make their intentions known on CFL Canadian Draft Day. Team president and CEO Jim Hopson announced Thursday morning that they would be selecting offensive lineman Ben Heenan first overall - and they did. Heenan, at 6-foot-four and 310 pounds, is expected to bolster the Roughriders offensive line even if he doesnt earn a starting job right away. "I saw Ben Heenan last year at the East/West game and I told people he will be the first pick overall last May," said Jeff Cummins, coach of the Acadia Axemen and one of TSNs draft analysts. "He has great feet and moves like an athlete 100 lbs lighter than he is. He can be a plug in and play guy right now for Saskatchewan." TSN Football Insider Dave Naylor said that getting offensive line help was not Saskatchewans biggest need, but taking a local prospect who could potentially play well for the Roughriders for 15 years was a "safe" choice. TSN Football Analyst Duane Forde agreed, saying Heenan will provide great value for the Roughriders. The TSN panel was not unanimous, though, as Chris Schultz said the Riders should have targeted a player who could provide more impact, saying Heenan is a good player but receiver Shamawd Chambers of Wilfrid Laurier would have been his pick. Heenan sent a message to supportive Saskatchewan fans on his Twitter account, saying, "Thank you everyone!! I look forward to joining #ridernation". The B.C. Lions traded with Edmonton to get the second pick and selected defensive tackle Jabar Westerman from Eastern Michigan, a player that TSNs Farhan Lalji said the Lions had rated head and shoulders above all the other defensive lineman in the draft. Forde said scouts were really impressed with Westermans game tape and having a need on the defensive line prompted the Lions to trade up. Edmonton, who has good players on their defensive interior, was comfortable trading down to the fourth spot and picking up extra picks later in the draft. Winnipeg traded two second-round picks to Hamilton to move into the No. 3 slot and selected offensive lineman Tyson Pencer from Washington State. "Tyson is an extremely talented lineman who has experience playing the tackle position," said Bombers GM Joe Mack. "We look forward to him becoming a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers for many years." Forde, who had Pencer ranked sixth among offensive linemen, considered the pick to be "off the board" but said if he can play tackle it could be a good pick. Schultz loved the selection, saying the 6-foot-7 Pencer looked very fluid at CFL E-Camp despite being 330 pounds and could be a differnece maker on a line that needs help. The Bombers had five picks in all. Hamilton used that newly acquired second-round pick (eighth overall) to take defensive back Courtney Stephen from Northern Illinois. Stephen will be returning to school next season and wont be in the Ticats lineup until at least 2013. After trading down, Edmonton selected Virgina offensive lineman Auston Pasztor fourth overall. Pasztor has a camp invite from the Minnesota Vikings, but the Eskimos were comfortable taking the chance that he will head north sooner than later. With the fifth pick, the Calgary Stampeders selected defensive end Ameet Pall of Wofford. "Ameet Pall is a consistently hard worker on the football field, in the classroom and in the weight room," said Stampeders head coach and GM John Hufnagel. "He is a good leader both on the field and off the field. He will contribute to our special teams and compete at the defensive line position." Edmonton made its second pick at No. 6 overall, taking wide receiver Shamawd Chambers from Wilfrid Laurier. "Chambers in unique in terms of his combination of size, speed and athletic ability," Forde noted. Chambers has a tryout booked with the Philadelphia Eagles, but Naylor said the Eskimos expect him to be in the CFL this season. Schultz said Chambers was the best athlete available in this draft. B.C. made its second pick of the first round at No. 7 overall, closing the round by taking offensive lineman Kirby Fabien of Calgary. The Lions have some depth on the offensive line, but Fabien should compete for a starting spot. "Were very pleased with our results so far today," said Lions GM Wally Buono. "We believe that we have selected two young men so far that enable us to remain strong on both sides of the line of scrimmage." Stefan Ptaszek, coach of the McMaster Marauders, told TSN Fabien has a great first step and should be able to play tackle in the CFL. The Toronto Argonauts finally got on the board in Round 2, taking lineman Cleyon Laing from Iowa State with the ninth overall selection. "Cleyon is a strong, physical presence inside," said Argonauts GM Jim Barker. "Hes a big man with great athleticism and these types of players dont come along every year." The Montreal Alouettes first pick - 11th overall in the second round - was running back Patrick Lavoie from the Laval Rouge et Or. Heenan was ranked second on the CFL Central Scouting list - behind defensive end Tyrone Crawford of Windsor, Ontario. Crawford was was taken in third round of the NFL Draft last weekend by the Dallas Cowboys. The CFL draft position of other Canadian prospects could also be affected by the NFL. Defensive lineman Christo Bilukidi of Georgia State, an Ottawa native, was chosen in the NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders. Austin Pasztor of Virginia, a native of Langton, Ontario, signed with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted rookie free agent and Wilfrid Laurier wide receiver Shamawd Chambers of Markham, Ontario will be attending mini-camp with the Philadelphia Eagles next week. Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Zach Randolph made the game-winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining, as the Memphis Grizzlies rallied past the Dallas Mavericks, 104-103. Randolph scored 21 of his 27 points in the second half for the Grizzlies, who stopped Dallas winning streak at eight games. Randolph also grabbed nine rebounds. Mike Conley added 17 points and 10 assists for Memphis, which got 16 points and 10 boards from Marc Gasol. Jason Terry finished with 26 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who also saw a nine-game home winning streak come to an end. Dirk Nowitzki chipped in with 23 points. Terrys jumper with 1:09 to play put the Mavericks ahead by three, 101-98. Randolph then made a pair of free throws at the other end to make it a one- point game. After Shawn Marion missed a runner, Brendan Haywood blocked O.J. Mayos jumper. The ball was tipped under the basket to Shane Battier, who put in an easy layup for a 102-101 Memphis lead with 14.3 seconds left. Dallas put the ball in the hands of Nowitzki, who made a shot from the foul line with 3.1 ticks remaining to give the Mavericks the lead. But Randolph worked his magic following a timeout. Conley passed the ball to Randolph in the left corner, and he drained a contested 17-foot jumper with 0.3 seconds left for a 104-103 edge. Terry was way off the mark with a 34-footer as time expiredd.dddddddddddd Coach drew up the play up for me to come out to the corner and Mike (Conley) got me the ball and I got a good rhythm bounce and got the shot off, Randolph said. Dallas dominated the first half, shooting 51.2 percent from the field to build a 55-38 margin. The Mavericks led by as many as 18 in the half. But Memphis started its comeback with a 41-point third quarter. Down by 15, 59-44, early in the frame, the Grizzlies went on a 16-4 run to get right back in the game. Randolph capped the burst with a layup to make it 63-60 with 5:41 to go. The visitors then took the lead late in the period, as Gasol made two free throws to give the Grizzlies a 79-78 lead heading to the fourth. It marked the first time since January 29 that Dallas trailed after three quarters. The whole game is the third quarter, Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle said. You give up 41 points, turn it over six times, and basically dont take the challenge -- you get what you deserve. Thats really the bottom line. GAME NOTES:Memphis took three of four from Dallas this season...The Mavericks were without Tyson Chandler (sprained right ankle)...Dallas went 10-of-21 from beyond the arc, while the Grizzlies went 3-of-15 from three-point range...Battier and Mayo each had 11 points off the bench...Rodrigue Beaubois had 15 points for Dallas, which shot 50.7 percent from the field.
