SUNRISE, Fla. -- Ben Scrivens made the most of his first start in goal for the Los Angeles Kings. Scrivens had 20 saves to record his third career shutout and the Kings beat the Florida Panthers 3-0 on Sunday. Jordan Nolan had a goal and an assist. Justin Williams and Daniel Carcillo also scored goals for the Kings, who won their third straight game. Scrivens, acquired in a trade from the Toronto Maple Leafs in June 2013, made his first start of the season as regular goalie Jonathan Quick, one of the best in the NHL, was given a rest. Scrivens last shutout was on Feb. 18, a 3-0 victory at Florida as a member of the Maple Leafs. "You cant give enough credit to the guys in front. They played extremely well, and all I had to do was focus on stopping the puck and seeing it well," Scrivens said. Two of Scrivens three shutouts have come against the Panthers. "Ive been fortunate that its worked out here in Florida. It (stinks) that Im in the West now, Im only out here once a year," Scrivens said. Jacob Markstrom had 26 saves for Florida, which has lost four of its past five games. Nolan put the Kings ahead 3-0 at 12:28 of the third with a tip-in off a pass from Jarret Stoll. "Fortunately I was able to get the puck and shoot it on net and it went in," Nolan said. "I was able to get a quick release and catch (Markstrom) off guard." The Kings went ahead 2-0 at 14:55 of the second. The Panthers tried to get the puck out of their zone but it was intercepted by the Kings. Williams passed to Anze Kopitar near the goal line to the right of the net, then Kopitar pushed the puck back out to Williams. His wrist shot got past an outstretched Markstrom. Kopitar has five assists in six games. Carcillos goal gave the Kings a 1-0 lead at 8:46 of the second. Mike Richards passed from behind the net to Carcillo in the bottom of the right circle. His slap shot got past Markstrom. Richards has four assists in his last four games. Kings coach Darryl Sutter was pleased with Scrivens play and his team in general. "He was sharp early. He made some big saves and handled the puck well, which is what we needed him to do. He looked very good out there," Sutter said. "Kopitar continues to be a dominant player for us." After scoring six goals in Fridays home opener against Pittsburgh, the Panthers couldnt muster much of an offence against the Kings. "Theyre a very big, strong-bodied team," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said. "As the game wore on, we got wore down. The problem that we have is I think our hockey IQ dropped as well. We thought we could play a fancy game and you cannot play a fancy game against the Kings." The Panthers didnt think they caught a break by facing Scrivens instead of Quick. "We have no game where we can have a letdown," Panthers defenceman Brian Campbell said. "He played pretty good last year in Toronto." Total prize money for the Grand Slam event will be 22.6 million pounds ($34.4 million), an increase of 6.5 million pounds ($9.DENVER -- Nolan Arenado didnt saunter around the bases so much as soar. The Colorado Rockies rookie third baseman wasnt trying to show anyone up -- he was simply in that big of hurry to get into the dugout and celebrate his first grand slam. "It was awesome," he said. Grand slams usually are. Carlos Gonzalez hit a go-ahead homer in the fifth and Arenado broke open a tight game with his big shot two innings later, sending the Rockies to a 9-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday night in David Prices first start since his run-in with umpire Tom Hallion. After Arenado circled the bases, his teammates mobbed him at home plate. And once he made it into the dugout, more high-fives and hugs awaited. "Its a good feeling," said Arenado, who spent the early part of the season at Triple-A Colorado Springs, before making his major league debut on April 28 at Arizona. "But the main thing is we got the win. So, that was nice." He was even presented the home run ball following the game. All he had to surrender to procure it from the fan was his autograph on another ball. A small price to pay for such a big memento. "It didnt take him long to get his first major league grand slam. It takes most of us years to do that," said manager Walt Weiss, who had one in his career. "This guy is a pretty good player." His fielding was just as big as his bat. Arenado made a barehanded play on a slow roller in the sixth that had everyone exulting, especially his manager. "I think Nolan showcased his skills tonight, on both sides of the ball," Weiss said. Jon Garland (3-2) threw five solid innings and surrendered three runs to help the Rockies snap an 11-game home skid in interleague play. Theyre now 8-3 against the Rays at Coors Field. For Price (1-3), this was a game hed rather forget. The AL Cy Young Award winner struggled with his grip on the ball and wrestled with his command as he surrendered nine earned runs in 6 2-3 innings. His biggest mistake? Easy, hanging a curve to Arenado. "It just wasnt a very good curveball," Price said. "I felt fine out there. I just didnt make enough quality pitches and they hit my mistakes." Price has had an eventful week after accusing Hallion of directing a profanity toward him during the Rays win over the Chicago White Sox last Sunday. Price thought Hallion missed a pitch and exchanged words with the plate umpire while heading to the dugout after the seventh inning. In this game, there were no confrontations with plate umpire Clintt Fagan.dddddddddddd Price didnt believe there would be, saying the day before that he didnt think umpires held grudges. "Ive got to get better," Price said. Troy Tulowitzki finished 3 for 3 with three RBIs and was hit by a pitch. The All-Star shortstop didnt start the night before because of soreness in his legs and was taken out once the Rockies built up a big lead. Gonzalez hit a deep solo shot to centre off Price in the fifth to give the Rockies a 4-3. Two innings later, Colorado added five runs. Price got two quick outs, before Gonzalez reached on a single. Evan Longoria made a nice grab on Tulowitzkis grounder, only to throw wide of the bag and allow runners to move up a base. Ben Zobrist was then off target with Michael Cuddyers roller, though it was later ruled a hit, allowing Gonzalez to score. After Wilin Rosario drew a walk, Arenado cleared the bases with his second homer of the season. Price was staked to an early 3-1 lead but couldnt make it hold up. He surrendered a game-tying two-run double to Tulowitzki in the third. That was after the Rays scored three times with two outs in the third. James Loney had a bloop double down the line and Kelly Johnson followed with a two-run single. Loney had three hits to raise his average to.380, which would be among the AL leaders but he doesnt have enough plate appearances to qualify yet. Colorado scored in the first when Tulowitzki laced an RBI single off the glove of Loney. Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar left the game in the second inning after being hit on the left hand by a pitch from Garland. The team said he had a bruised hand. "Its pretty swollen right now," Escobar said through an interpreter. "It feels kind of stiff, but its OK. "I thought I broke it. Im happy and grateful its not broke. Skiles told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel on Tuesday that he would be back as the teams coach.WASHINGTON -- With three minutes left in a game Pistons coach Lawrence Frank called "ugly, grimy, grindy" -- and his team won, beating the Washington Wizards 79-77 -- the esthetic highlight, without a doubt, came when Detroit rookie Brandon Knight got drenched while hurdling over the teams sideline seats in futile pursuit of a loose ball. Knight upended a jug of energy drink and about a dozen paper cups Monday night, spraying himself and some seated teammates. Play was delayed for a bit while Knight toweled off -- and some of the evenings most enthusiastic applause came in response to overhead video-board replays of his valiant and athletic effort. "I just got up drenched," Knight said. "I felt like I was sweating a lot." Yes, given the utter lack of good basketball displayed by two lottery-bound teams, Knight gave the Pistons a needed nudge, and Rodney Stuckey gave them the winning 20-foot jumper with 0.2 seconds left. Stuckey scored half of his 24 points in the fourth quarter, and the Pistons erased a 13-point deficit to end a five-game losing streak. "Brandons hustle play was a momentum-changing play. Guy took a shower during the game, and that doesnt happen a lot," Frank said. "I thought that really pumped our guys up." It came during a game-changing run, as Detroit managed to win despite being held below 80 points for the third game in a row; that last happened to the Pistons in December 2003. Greg Monroe, who played home games on the Wizards court while at Georgetown, had 10 points and 10 rebounds, including a putback off a miss by Tayshaun Prince with 23 seconds remaining to put Detroit ahead 76-75. After Detroits Ben Wallace made one free throw, Washingtons Nene tied it at 77 on a hook shot with 5.8 seconds to go. That left enough time for Stuckey -- who missed the past three games with a sore big left toe -- to get up court and step back for the decisive shot that capped a comeback against the no-lead-is-safe Wizards. This was the third consecutive home game in which Washington was ahead by more than 10 points in the second half before losing. "Carbon copy of the last two here," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "If you keep running into the same guy, and he keeps punching you in the face, youre going to learn to get your hands up, arent you? This is three straight times." Jordan Crawford led Washington with 20 points, and John Wall had 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds. But Wall also went scoreless in the fourth quarter, and missed a chance to help Washington with the ball in his hands late -- just as in the previous two home defeats.dddddddddddd. This time, Washington scored the second halfs initial eight points to lead 43-30. And while Washington lost its previous two home games despite leading one by 22 and the other by 16, those were against playoff-bound Indiana and Atlanta. This was against Detroit, which like Washington is headed for the draft lottery. Neither team has a chance of making the playoffs: Detroit is 17-32 and last in the Central Division, while the Wizards came in 11-38 and the only reason they werent last in the Southeast Division is that Charlotte resides there. And they played like it. The Pistons shot 28 of 76 (36.8 per cent) in the game and accumulated more turnovers (13) than buckets (10) in the first half. "The NBA called," Frank said. "They were about to throw both of us out of the building." It didnt help Washington that it was playing its third game in three nights, the teams first of those rough stretches the NBA worked into the schedule in order to help it cram in 66 games after the lockout-shortened the calendar. The Wizards, who have lost four in a row overall, took their sizable lead despite starting the game 0 for 10 on 3-point tries. That drought ended, surprisingly enough, when Wall made one; the No. 1 overall pick in the 2010 draft was 2 for 27 from beyond the arc this season until then. The first quarter was about as ugly as professional basketball gets. The Pistons missed their first six field goal attempts and finally made one on Stuckeys end-to-end layup at the 7:13 mark. "The first half," Stuckey said, "was horrible on both sides." Detroit wound up 5 for 19 in the quarter -- 26.3 per cent. The Wizards werent much better, though, making 7 of 21 shots -- 33.3 per cent -- and trailed 16-14. Yes, 30 total points for both teams after a full quarter of NBA action. Fan-tastic! The quality of play didnt really improve in the second quarter. There were air balls. Passes thrown into the crowd. Finger rolls that rolled off the rim. At halftime, Washington led 35-30, matching Detroits lowest output for a half this season. NOTES: The Wizards were without F Trevor Booker because of right knee tendinitis. ... Washington won the teams first meeting this season by 21 points on Feb. 12. ... Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps was in a courtside seat near the Wizards bench. ' ' '

TORONTO -- Given the injuries that have plagued the Toronto Maple Leafs, Nazem Kadri is just glad its not a lockout-shortened season. Kadris back from a one-game absence to attend his grandfathers funeral, but when the Leafs take the ice Thursday night against the Dallas Stars, they will be without centre Tyler Bozak and enforcer Colton Orr. Bozak will be out "an extended period of time" with an oblique strain, coach Randy Carlyle said. Bozak, who was placed on injured reserve, suffered the injury in Tuesday nights loss to the San Jose Sharks. Orr had a "procedure" on a bursa sac in his elbow, according to Carlyle. Star winger Phil Kessel will play despite leaving practice Wednesday with an undisclosed injury, Carlyle said. Kessel hasnt missed a game the past three-plus seasons, and Kadri called him the teams "iron man." "Thats a tribute to the player," Carlyle added. "He finds ways to get through the game and get through practice and get himself ready for the rigours of playing an NHL season. Those are things that wed like (from) every player on our team." But the Leafs dont have that. With Bozak and Orr out, the Leafs recalled Jerry DAmigo from the Toronto Marlies of the AHL, and Carlyle called the winger an "option" to play against Dallas. LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have re-signed reliever Mike MacDougal to a US$1-million, one-year contract with a club option for 2013. The 34-year-old right-hander had a 2.05 ERA with a 3-1 record and one save in his first year with the Dodgers last season. He was second on the team with 57.0 innings pitched while making a career-high 69 appearances. He limited opposing hitters to a .157 batting average and allowed 17 of his team-high 51 inherited runners to score. MacDougal had two streaks of 11 consecutive scoreless innings last season. He is 18-23 with 71 saves and a 3.94 ERA in 11 major-league seasons with Kansas City, the Chicago White Sox, Washington, St. Louis and the Dodgers. MacDougal was an all-star in 2003 with the Royals, when he had 27 saves as a rookie. MacDougal gets a salary of $650,000 for 2012. The 2013 option is for $2.35 million, or a $350,000 buyout. cheap jerseys . -- The Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded tight end Kellen Winslow to the Seattle Seahawks for a draft pick on Monday night and signed former Colts star Dallas Clark to replace him. wholesale jerseys . He almost ran out of time. But early in the fourth quarter, McHale finally hit the jackpot and the Rockets roared past the Memphis Grizzlies for a 93-86 road victory. Chandler Parsons scored 17 points and Omri Casspi added 16 as the Rockets (10-5) won for the fifth time in six games. Houston outscored Memphis 38-23 in the fourth quarter, with Parsons and Casspi combining for 20 of those points. "We just kept on trying to find a lineup that would really click," McHale said. "And that last lineup we had there did a great job." Houston trailed for most of the night and its 93 points were a season low, but the Rockets made a 14-2 run early in the fourth quarter, pushing ahead 67-65 on a pair free throws by Casspi with 8:26 remaining. The Rockets played without All-Star guard James Harden, who missed his second straight game with a sore left foot. It was the Grizzlies first full game since 7-foot-1 centre Marc Gasol was lost indefinitely to a sprained MCL in his left knee. Memphis (7-7) had a 46-32 lead early in the third quarter, but couldnt hold it down the stretch. "We had a great game plan and we did it for three quarters," Allen said. "They just turned into a whole different team once they set their starters down. Those guys penetrated the basketball, got into our soft spot. They made plays -- Casspi was a difference-maker." Tayshaun Prince led Memphis with 16 points. Allen added 15. Houstons offence was missing a considerable chunk of its scoring without Harden, who is averaging 24.2 points per game. The Rockets had a miserable offensive first half without him, turning the ball over 11 times and shooting just 11 of 32 from the field (34.4 per cent), including 1 of 11 (9.1 per cent) from 3-point range. The Grizzlies closed the second quarter on a 15-6 run to take a 44-32 halftime lead. Houston finally found some rhythm in the second half, hitting five 3-pointers after starting 1 of 14 from behind the arc.dddddddddddd The bench was key in the run, with Francisco Garcia hitting a 3-pointer to tie it at 65 -- pumping his fist and screaming as he went back on defence. Casspi scored 11 points in the fourth quarter while Parsons had nine. It was a hodgepodge lineup for most of the fourth quarter, with McHale leaning on Beverly, Garcia, Parsons, Casspi and Omer Asik. But it worked. "When we move the ball and share the ball together, we are tough," Casspi said. Parsons shot 8 of 9 from the field. The Rockets shot 23 of 37 (62 per cent) in the second half. "Tonight was ugly and we didnt do a lot of things right," Parsons said. "But we trust our coaches, we trust our offence and we continued to run it." Memphis coach Dave Joerger says his teams offence will change considerably with Gasol out of the lineup. And at least for one night, it changed for the worse. Gasol said pregame he expects to be on crutches for three to four weeks before he can even start work on his return. Kosta Koufos started in place of Gasol and had a productive night, with eight points and a season-high 13 rebounds. But Mike Conley, the Grizzlies leading scorer with more than 19 points per game, had a tough night, shooting just 2 of 14 from the field and finishing with 10 points and 10 assists. Memphis had won five straight over Houston at FedExForum dating back nearly three years before Mondays loss. NOTES: Memphis Jon Leuer and Nick Calathes saw extensive playing time in the first half. Leuer had notched five straight DNPs before facing Houston while Calathes had DNPs in four of his last five. Both finished with four points. ... Memphis Randolph had his streak of five straight double-doubles snapped. ... Houstons Howard was called for a technical foul early in the first half after a short argument with an official following a foul call. ... Houstons reserves scored 27 points, led by Casspis 16. ... Asik has been buried on the bench for most of the past month, but chipped in with two points and 10 rebounds over 21 minutes against the Grizzlies. ' ' '

TAMPA, Fla. -- New York Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter has resumed on-field work for the first time since his 2013 season was cut short. The Yankees captain hit off a tee in a batting cage and fielded 108 grounders on the grass in front of the infield dirt Monday at the Yankees minor league complex. Jeter, who turns 40 in June, was limited to 17 games last year after breaking an ankle during the 2012 playoffs. "I dont think about it, and thats a good thing," Jeter said. Jeter broke his left ankle Oct. 13, 2012 during the AL championship series opener against Detroit. He was limited to five games and 11 at-bats during spring training last year, stayed behind in Florida when the team broke camp for rehabilitation and broke the ankle again in April during rehabilitation. "Its good to have a normal off-season and get some work in," Jeter said. "Everything is normal now." Jeter missed the first 91 games of the 2013 season, then felt pain his right quadriceps when he returned July 11. He went back on the DL, returned July 28 for three games, then strained his right calf. Back in the lineup on Aug. 26, he played through Sept. 7, when he left for a pinch runner after singling against Boston. While scans of the left ankle were negative, the Yankees said four days later his season was over. Jeter wound up hitting .190 (12 for 63) with one homer and seven RBIs, playing 13 games at shortstop and four at designated hitter. Jeter normally begins baseball activities in mid-Janaury in preparation for spring training. Yankees pitchers, catcher and injured players start workouts Feb. 15, with the rest of the team beginning five days later. Byrd and the Philadelphia Phillies agreed Tuesday to a $16 million, two-year contract, a deal that came less than a year after he was playing in Mexicos winter league. The 36-year-old outfielder hit a career-high 24 homers last season for the New York Mets and Pittsburgh, which acquired him on Aug. 27. He batted .364 with one homer and five RBIs in six playoff games after hitting .291 during the season with 88 RBIs, one short of his career best. "Marlon adds a significant upgrade both offensively and defensively to our outfield," Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said in a statement. "He has been particularly productive against left-handed pitching, which was a serious challenge for us this past season." Byrd was drafted by the Phillies and began his big league career in Philadelphia. His agreement calls for $8 million in each of the next two seasons and includes an $8 million team option for 2016, The option would become guaranteed if he has 1,100 at-bats in the next two seasons, including at least 550 in 2015, or 600 at-bats in 2015. "If you dont want to give up your first-round pick, Marlon Byrd is arguably the best available outfield bat," Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said. "We feared he was out of our price range immediately. We stayed engaged in the process, and Marlon and his agents talked about wanting to come back to Pittsburgh. He loved his time there. The environment and playing for a winner and playing in front of that fan base was something that really intrigued him." A career .280 hitter with 106 homers and 533 RBIs, Byrd was released by Boston in June 2012, then given a 50-game suspension 11 days later following a positive test for Tamoxifen, which can reduce side effects of steroid use and increase testosterone. At the time, Byrd said he mistakenly used the medication for a recurrence of a condition that earlier required surgery. He says he did not use it for performance enhancement. He played winter ball for the Tomateros de Culiacan (Culiacan Tomato Growers) and signed a minor league contract with the Mets on Feb. 1. He wound up on their big league roster for a base salary of $700,000 and earned another $100,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances.dddddddddddd Both the dollars and the years offered by the Phillies were at a level the Pirates were unprepared to match in talks with agents Sam and Seth Levinson. "The timing really bit us, and Ruben did a great job of going out and getting his guy early -- what we did with Russ Martin a year ago," Huntington said. "We werent in a position to be able to move this quickly." Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said the deal was an indication of inflation in free-agent prices. "Had you asked me the question three or four months ago, I might have been surprised, but not in the light of whats happened since the end of the season," he said. "There havent been that many signings, but this one is consistent with the others." Philadelphia had sought a right-handed hitting outfielder with power since Jayson Werth left for Washington following the 2010 season. Ben Francisco, John Mayberry Jr. and Delmon Young werent solutions; Hunter Pence was acquired in July 2011 and traded a year later. Darin Ruf hit 14 homers in 251 at-bats last season while starting 27 games in right field, 15 in left and 28 at first base. But Ruf, a converted first baseman, is hardly the defensive player Byrd is and is viewed as a role player. Philadelphias outfielders hit .259 with 57 homers and a .407 slugging percentage this year. Byrd could be a major upgrade. "He is an experienced middle-of-the-order hitter who creates some balance to our lineup," Amaro said. "With his talent and clubhouse presence, we believe Marlon will be a solid addition to our club as we address our needs and plan to contend in 2014 and beyond." Byrd was once a prized prospect in the Phillies minor league system. He finished fourth in NL Rookie of the Year voting in 2003 after hitting .303, but struggled the next two seasons and was traded to Washington. Byrd has also played for Texas, the Chicago Cubs and Boston in a 12-year career with seven teams. He was an NL All-Star with the Cubs in 2010 and his best season before last year came with the Rangers in 2009 when he batted .283 with 20 homers and 89 RBIs. ' ' '

KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- The Atlanta Braves agreed Wednesday on a $14.1 million, one-year contract with Ervin Santana, bolstering their injury plagued starting rotation. The 33-year-old right-hander went 9-10 with a 3.24 ERA in 32 starts for the Kansas City Royals last season and should make a huge impact with the battered Braves, who are facing the prospect of losing Kris Medlen for the season and opening with Brandon Beachy and Mike Minor on the disabled list. Medlen, who had been announced as Atlantas opening-day starter, left a spring training outing Sunday after grabbing his right elbow. Initial tests showed ligament damage, and he will undergo further examination to determine if he needs surgery for the second time in less than four years. Medlen said hes already preparing himself to miss the entire season. Beachy left a start Monday because of continuing problems with his right elbow, and Minor has yet to pitch this spring because of a sore shoulder. "In light of what has happened over the past few days with our pitching staff, we felt it was incumbent on us to do everything we could to strengthen our starting pitching," Braves general manager Frank Wren told reporters before a game against Washington. Santana will be pitching in the NL for the first time in his 10-year career. He spent eight seasons with the Los Angeles Angels before being traded to the Royals in 2013, helping Kansas City post an 86-76 record, their best since 1989. But Santana, who made $13 million in the final year of his contract, turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer from the Royals and became a free agent. Given his hefty contract demands, he remained unsigned as spring training began, despite putting up some impressive career numbers. "This guy makes our rotation a lot better than where we are at now," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said, praising Wren. "We lost Medlen and Beachy in a matter of 2 1/2 days and he went out there and got the best pitcher available for us." Santana threw a bullpen at the Braves spring training complex on Wednesday, which Gonzalez said went well. Despite his late entrance to camp, Santana could be ready for the start of the season. "It will be close," Gonzalez said. "We are kind of keeping our fingers crossed that we can get him enough innings where he can start for us." Santana was an AL All-Star in 2008, tossed a no-hitter in 2011, and has reached double-figure wins five times, going a career-best 17-10 in 2010 and twice winning 16 games. Overall, he is 105-90 with a 4.19 ERA. Santanas agent, Jay Alou, said he initially received a text from Wren on Sunday, then got another call Tuesday night while negotiating with other clubs. It didnt take long to reach an agreement with Atlanta, a deal that includes award bonuses. Its easy to see why the Braves felt a sense of desperation. Medlen went a team-leading 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA last season, while Minor was 13-9 with a 3.21 ERA. The team also was counting on a full recovery for Beachy, who was one of the NLs most effective pitchers in 2012 before he underwent season-ending elbow surgery. Beachy has been limited to a total of 18 starts over the past two seasons, enduring several setbacks in his attempt to come back. After his latest problem, he will miss his next scheduled spring start and faces another trip to the DL. Minor, who underwent urinary tract surgery on Dec. 31, hopes to pitch within the next week but also seems likely to start the season on the DL while he builds his arm strength. Given all the health issues, the Braves got to the go-ahead from corporate owner Liberty Media to bump the payroll well above the projected $100 million limit. Wren called it "an incredible decision by the organization." With opening day less than three weeks away, the only healthy members of the Braves possible rotation are second-year pitchers Julio Teheran (14-8 last season) and Alex Wood, rookie David Hale and non-roster invitee Freddy Garcia. Hale and Garcia have both struggled this spring. Atlanta also signed veteran Gavin Floyd, but he is coming off Tommy John surgery and wont be ready to pitch until at least May. Now, add Santana to the list, though it will likely be mid-April before he is prepared to join the rotation. He has been throwing on the side and could make his spring training debut next week. "We want to take the right amount of caution to get him ready right, and be ready for the long haul," Wren said. By signing Santana, the Braves forfeited their first-round pick in Junes amateur draft, No. 26 overall, and the Royals will receive a compensation-round selection, the 28th overall. Atlantas first pick is now 32nd overall, as compensation for losing free agent catcher Brian McCann, who signed with the New York Yankees. Santanas signing leaves only two free agents -- Stephen Drew and Kendrys Morales -- available from the 13 players who turned down qualifying offers. If they agree to one-year contracts after opening day, they wouldnt be subject to qualifying offers this November. If they wait until after the draft to reach agreements, clubs that sign them wont lose selections. Among the 22 qualifying offers in the two years of the new labour contract, none have been accepted. "Frankly, the players havent adjusted to the change," New York Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said. "To blame the system versus the marketplace and blame the system versus a misunderstanding of the marketplace I think is a little one-sided. From a management standpoint, Id say, Hey, Im surprised if you guys havent taken a qualifying offer. Maybe they should have." cheap nfl jerseys . Federer, who turns 32 next Thursday, made the unusual move of participating in a pair of minor clay-court tournaments in the period between playing on Wimbledons grass and shifting to the North American summer hard-court season.LAWRENCE, Kan. - Tarik Black pulled a Big 12 championship T-shirt over his broad shoulders, slipped a title hat on his head, and then gave Andrew Wiggins and the rest of his teammates a hug. In the background stood the trophies, all 10 of them, brought onto the court at Allen Fieldhouse -- a perfect ending to Blacks nearly perfect senior night. The transfer from Memphis scored 19 points on 9-for-9 shooting, more than making up for the loss of injured centre Joel Embiid, and led the eighth-ranked Jayhawks to an 82-57 victory over Texas Tech on Wednesday night. "Wow, did he play good tonight," Kansas coach Bill Self said. Black matched the school record for field goal attempts without a miss held by C.J. Giles (2005) and Mark Randall (1990). The only shots he missed came at the free throw line. Wiggins, the Vaughan, Ont., native also likely playing in his final home game, added nine points for the Jayhawks (23-7, 14-3 Big 12). Naadir Tharpe came off the bench to contribute 16 points and five assists, and Perry Ellis finished with 13 points and five rebounds. Toddrick Gotcher scored 10 points to lead the Red Raiders (13-17, 5-12), who trailed by 20 points at halftime and never threatened down the stretch in losing their sixth straight game. "We didnt do a good job of executing," Gotcher said. The lopsided victory allowed Kansas to celebrate its latest conference title in style. The Jayhawks backed into the outright championship despite a loss last weekend at Oklahoma State, and Self was so disheartened by the performance that he ordered the title T-shirts and hats waiting in the locker room to remain in their boxes. His decision was criticized in some circles, but Self defended it in a news conference Tuesday. They were finally brought out moments after the final buzzer Wednesday, along with a series of tables at midcourt that held up the Jayhawks 10 straight Big 12 title trophies. Self also made sure that senior night at Kansas focused on the seniors, which is why Black started alongside classmates Niko Roberts and Justin Wesley -- two rarely used role players. Still, the packed crowd was keenly aware that it was probably the last time Wiggins would step on the Phogs court, too. The fans roared at every basket made by the star forward, who has already made it clear that he plans to enter the NBA draft this summer.dddddddddddd "Weve been able to recruit some guys that will probably never get to a senior night, and we should be happy to have those guys," Self told the crowd after the game. "So one last time, lets give the entire team a loud ovation and thank them for their efforts." All the positive vibes made it easy to forget that the Jayhawks were playing without Embiid, their talented 7-foot freshman, whom Self decided to sit the rest of the regular season because of a lower back strain. Its the same injury that caused Embiid to miss a game against TCU earlier in the season, though Self is hopeful he will be back for the Big 12 tournament. "Didnt you guys think Joel looked great in his suit tonight?" Self asked the crowd. "But Jo, listen, everybody thinks you look much better in a uniform." Without the big man patrolling the paint, it was up to Black to leave his mark. The graduate transfer dominated the overmatched Red Raiders in the paint, scoring just about all his baskets at the rim. The highlight came in the midst of a 17-4 run to end the first half, when Black caught an alley-oop pass from Tharpe and slammed it home. By the time Conner Frankamp buried a 3-pointer and Frank Mason added a free throw in the final seconds, the lead had swelled to 39-19 and Kansas was well on its way. The second half was merely an excuse for another sellout crowd, this one including 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh and Packers coach Mike McCarthy, to enjoy a rollicking party. Meanwhile, the loss means that Red Raiders coach Tubby Smith, who spent most of the game sitting glumly on the bench, will have to beat Texas on Saturday and win the Big 12 tournament -- four games in four days -- to avoid his first losing season in 23 years as a head coach. Texas Tech still has never won in 14 tries at Allen Fieldhouse. "Its just not our time right now. I feel like we still have another season coming up with the Big 12 tournament," said the Red Raiders Jaye Crockett, "and hopefully we can make a run during the tournament along with our next game against Texas." That included a track-record third run of 51.

BOSTON - Jerryd Bayless scored a season-high 29 points in a rare start, and Rajon Rondo added 22 points and 11 assists to help the Boston Celtics break a five-game losing streak with a 115-104 victory over the slumping Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. Six players scored in double figures for Boston. Rondos double-double was his second straight and fifth overall since he returned from a knee injury on Jan. 17. Jeff Teague had 26 points and DeMarre Carroll scored 24 off the bench for Atlanta, which lost for the 10th time in 11 games. Back home after an 0-4 West Coast trip, the Celtics had only nine healthy players after a sore toe forced rookie Kelly Olynyk to the bench alongside regular starters Jared Sullinger and Avery Bradley. The Hawks were missing five injured players, including starters Al Horford and Paul Millsap. Kyle Korver had 17 points for the Hawks, including four 3-pointers. Celtics coach Brad Stevens decided to start Bayless alongside Rondo and have Gerald Wallace (12 points) come off the bench. Bayless had his best game since being traded to the Celtics on Jan. 6, with 21 second-half points — including four 3s in the third quarter. The Hawks hit their first six shots en route to a 13-2 lead just 3:25 into the game, then raced off to a 23-8 advantage before the Celtics rallied behind Rondos 11 first-quarter points to close to 27-25. Boston took a 58-56 halftime lead. Carroll had 17 points for the Hawks, who hit six 3s in the first half — three by Korver — to keep it close. Teague scored 10 points in the third quarter, and Boston took an 81-79 lead into the final period. Boston entered the game with the fourth-worst record in the NBA. The Hawks, even with their recent woes, still own the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. PAUL, Minn.VANCOUVER – David Clarkson has picked up the tab on just two tickets in his return home to play for the Leafs this fall. Family and friends of the Toronto native have actually been more comfort than unnecessary distraction so far. In fact, its been the adjustment of playing with a new team after eight years in the New Jersey Devils organization that has proved most challenging for the 29-year-old to date. Inked to a massive seven-year deal worth $36.75 million this past summer, Clarkson is admittedly trying to figure out where he fits in the scheme of things for the Leafs, who lead the Eastern Conference at the outset of November. Employed in an offensive role in New Jersey, Clarkson has played a different part in the first four games of his Toronto tenure, after serving a 10-game suspension to start the season. The former Kitchener Ranger has joined Dave Bolland and Mason Raymond on a line charged with shutting down opposing top units; their efforts most notable in a victory over Sidney Crosby and the Penguins last week. Formerly a first unit power-play contributor with the Devils, Clarkson didnt see a single second of power-play time during a two-game swing through Alberta – both wins – stuck behind a skillful cast that features Phil Kessel, James van Riemsdyk, Joffrey Lupul, and Mason Raymond. A free agent signing of the Devils in the summer of 2005, Clarkson evolved from a scrappy checker who dropped the gloves on the regular into a physical, goal-scoring irritant who fought only sparingly. Though he buried 30 goals once previously, the Leafs didnt add him with offence atop the mind, the intangibles of his game seen as more valuable to a young team looking to build from its success in 2013. Speaking to the Leaf Report earlier this week Clarkson hinted at the role he imagined playing in Toronto and the one hes been entrusted to play thus far. Notching his first point as a Leaf in Calgary on Wednesday, he explained the challenges of his adjustment. What follows is an edited transcript of that conversation. LR: Bigger adjustment, on the ice or off the ice when youve been with an organization for so long? CLARKSON: Id have to say probably on the ice. I think Im used to linematees or a certain way of things or even a way you play or get played.dddddddddddd. But I think being home, off the ice isnt as much adjustment. I think its nice Im closer to home. You have family and friends around if you need anything. Id have to say for sure bigger [adjustment] on the ice. LR: If Im not mistaken you played with Patrik Elias a lot in New Jersey; what would be the adjustment in playing with a guy for so long and then coming to a new team and playing with a whole new set of teammates? CLARKSON: I think it takes time to get used to. Ive got to get used to the way things are here. Im never going to change the way I play [or] what made me successful. Im trying to find where that leash is that I have to get to. But Im starting to get used to the coaching staff a little bit and the way things are. I think as a pro youve got to learn who youre playing with and learn the role you have to play. Im just trying to figure that whole role out right now. LR: So is that expectations of what they want you to do in certain situations? CLARKSON: Unsure. I think from the Pitt game to [the Edmonton] game it seems like [Randy Carlyle] really wants us out there against the top line shutting them down. I did that earlier in my career, maybe my first couple years in the league, and my last three [years] its been a bit of a different role. I think if you can mesh the two together, find a way to do that, it would be obviously a perfect situation. But youve got to, as a teammate; if the teams winning thats all that matters. And youve got to find a way to fit and find a way they want to use you. Im still learning all that. Thats the big thing is Im trying to learn everything that they expect. LR: I feel like thats a role you would like though… CLARKSON: Yeah. If you can blend that with the role I was playing. I think you take pride anytime youre on the ice against another teams top line and you end the night where youve shut them down and won a game its an important thing; its a big part of winning. Its never been said to me thats what [Carlyle] wants me to do, but it seems like that. No matter role Im asked to play, I take it to heart, I take it personal and Im going to go out there and do my best to do whatevers asked of me. ' ' '

PHOENIX -- Extra-inning games seem to suit the Arizona Diamondbacks quite well. The Diamondbacks improved to 6-0 in extra frames this season after beating the Colorado Rockies 3-2 in 10 innings on Saturday night. Cody Ross hit a long fly ball to centre field that allowed A.J. Pollock to score from third base without a throw, and Ross teammates sprinted from the dugout to congratulate him after Pollock crossed home plate. Ross also tripled in a run in the first inning to give Arizona a 2-0 lead, three batters after Pollock hit a solo home run. J.J. Putz earned the win with a scoreless top of the 10th to improve to 2-0. Pollock led off the bottom of the inning with a single off Edgmer Escalona (1-1). With one out, he stole second base and went to third on a throwing error by Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario. The Rockies then intentionally walked Miguel Montero to have Escalona face Ross. Ross hit a ball more than 400 feet to centre and the Rockies had no chance to throw out the speedy Pollock. "That guy has good stuff. He throws hard and has a good slider," Ross said of Escalona. "I was just looking for something out over the plate that I could get some good wood on and fortunately it got in the air and Pollock was able to score easily." The Diamondbacks turned three double plays in the first five innings. The Rockies loaded the bases in the first and fifth innings against Diamondbacks starter Wade Miley, but failed to score each time. On the night of a garden gnome giveaway promotion bearing his name, Miley struggled with his control more than in any of his previous four starts this season. He lasted only 4 1-3 innings and threw 98 pitches, walking seven. Miley walked four in the first inning, but got out of the situation with a double play and a strikeout. "I just didnt have it tonight and that was pretty much the bottom line. I tried to battle through it but didnt have it," Miley said.dddddddddddd "I was scuffling out there. I was lucky." Rosario homered off reliever Brad Ziegler in the sixth, and the Rockies tied it 2-2 when Troy Tulowitzki singled in Dexter Fowler with two outs in the seventh. Fowler had reached second on a hustle double, sliding head first and avoiding the tag. Tulowitzki was thrown out at second trying to stretch his hit into a double. The Diamondbacks had a chance to take the lead in the seventh, but Gerardo Parra was stranded after he singled and reached third base on a wild pitch. The Rockies had their best late chance in the eighth when Michael Cuddyer and Rosario singled to start the inning. But Cuddyer was picked off on a throw the catcher, Montero, made to shortstop Cliff Pennington and Rosario was doubled off second base after straying too far off the bag on a line out to Parra in right field. Cuddyer was incredulous at being picked off, and described the game as odd. "I think thats a good word," Cuddyer said. "Sometimes it happens , unfortunately. You dont get the big hit and we didnt. We had a lot of opportunities to get it, but we just didnt come up with it." BEREA, Ohio -- Peyton Hillis walked out of the Browns locker room Friday carrying a playbook under his right arm. On Sunday, he hopes hes carrying a football. At long last. Clevelands besieged running back, who has missed the past six games with a severely strained left hamstring, could return to the field this week when the Browns (4-6) visit the Cincinnati Bengals (6-4). Its a surprising development considering Browns coach Pat Shurmur ruled him out when the week began and Hillis did not practice Wednesday or Thursday. But Hillis has made major progress in the past few days, and is on the brink of a long-awaited, and perhaps dramatic, return. "I miss playing football," he said. "Its what I was brought up my whole life to do. Im excited to get out there playing a game. Im excited about winning games. Im excited to see how I can play during this time. Im excited I feel 100 per cent again." Hillis, whose fall from stardom has been as abrupt as his rise, is ready to resume his stormy season. "Ive just got to find a way to overcome all of this and be the player I used to be," he said. Hillis practiced Friday for the first time since Nov. 4, when he re-injured his hamstring two days before a game in Houston. During the portion of practice open to the media, Hillis appeared to be fully healed. He carried the ball a few times, and near the end of the workout, Hillis caught a short pass and turned up field with a burst of speed. Shurmur said it would be a game-time decision whether Hillis plays. "Because he hasnt played ball in a long time, I think its still important that Im cautious with his return," Shurmur said. In addition to possibly having Hillis back, the Browns will have running back Montario Hardesty, who has missed the past three games with a calf injury. With Hillis and Hardesty sidelined, Chris Ogbonnaya rushed for 115 yards last week in a win over Jacksonville. Shurmur wouldnt be pinned down on who would start. "If Hillis is available, he will be available because hes ready to play," he said. "Now, whether hell start or not Ill have to decide that on Sunday. We have running backs coming back from injury so none of them can handle a full load and I think thats an important thing to remember." It figures Hillis return would be a spectacle. His second season in Cleveland has been nothing short of a sideshow since it began. Hillis squabbled publicly with the Browns over a possible contract extension before both sides decided to table discussions. He missed Clevelands game on Sept. 23 with strep throat, a decision he said he made on the advice of his agent. Hillis got hurt on Oct. 16 at Oakland, and two weeks later missed a Halloween party for needy kids, an absence he blamed on a miscommunication. There was his meeting with some of the Browns team leaders, who confronted him about being a distraction and missing treatments for his injury when he went to Arkansas last month to get married during a work week. Hillis then re-injured his hamstring in practice, two days before he had hoped to come back. Its been a mess, one Hillis hopes to clean up. "Things happen," he said, dismissing the suggestion his season has been a "nightmare." "I guess when more people are looking at you everything seems more severe. Ive got to be responsible and understand that as well, that no matter what you go through, youve always got to keep a good mindset and try to go through it as best you can. "As far as this year, goes, I just look at like bumps in the road you have to overcome. Thats in life with everybody." For the past six Sundays, Hillis has been reduced to the role of cheerleader. Its been agonizing to stand on the sideline in sweats and watch. Its pained him not to be able to help his team. "Its awful," he said. Hillis believes his recovery was hastened by a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection into his injured hamstring. Its a treatment that involves extracting blood from patients and re-injecting just the plasma. The procedure is not prohibited by league policies, said NFL spokesman Greg Aiello. "Its supposed to make you heal a lot faster than what it was and thats obviously what it did," he said. "Its been 2 1/2 weeks since the shot and Im steadily improving day by day." With his smash-and-dash running style, Hillis ran for nearly 1,200 yards and 11 touchdowns last season, his first with the Browns, who acquired him in a trade from Denver. He became an instant favourite with Cleveland fans, who helped vote him onto the cover of the Madden 12 video game, giving him national exposure. But theres been nothing but problems this season, leading some to speculate that fame has gone to Hillis head and changed him. Hillis doesnt think so. "Im still same guy," he said. "You get a few bumps in the road and you have to rebound from that and do your best on and off the field. Hopefully you can go out when you can and play ball and I dont care who you are, when you go out and you do well, its going to make you feel better as a person and on this team." TORONTO – Without much choice otherwise at the moment, Ron Wilson has implored his team to better support its struggling pair of netminders. James Reimer and Jonas Gustavsson are both squarely under the microscope as the Leafs cling to a playoff position. Six losses in seven games with increasingly ineffective play between the pipes has the tide rising with a tough matchup against the Sharks on deck, the second of a four-game homestand. "Its not an easy spot to play," Cody Franson said. "They can be the highlight reel or the blooper reel in any two seconds in the game." Unfortunately for Gustavsson, such a blooper emerged on Tuesday evening, Mark Faynes point shot skipping past the 27-year-old in overtime as the Leafs fell to the Devils 4-3 at the Air Canada Centre. The goal capped a rather uninspiring performance from the third-year netminder, one of many in recent weeks from the Leafs goaltending duo. In spite of the struggles, the club still remains eighth in the Eastern Conference, hoping to better aid the pair who could very well hold the keys to any postseason aspirations. "I think the biggest thing is just be positive in the room and support them vocally," Franson said. "I think that when us as players are going through something, it doesnt help to have negativity around you. It doesnt help to have people questioning some of your last plays or constantly on you for a mistake or something like that. So I think as long as were supportive towards them, trying to help them out as much as possible, try and have a little bit of fun; couple laughs here and there is huge. "Its one of those things where when youre going through tough spots, its not always the easiest to just think about other things. If you can help them just get away from it for a bit and then focus in on game-day, it can be a good thing for them." Easing the emotional glare of the microscope could serve to alleviate the increasing pressure, but its clear that support on the ice lies atop the list of priorities. Skating with more vigour and speed against the Devils, the Leafs played a better overall game than at any point in recent weeks, tightening up in spurts defensively while turning fewer pucks over. Ultimately, its a stingier effort in the defensive zone that will lighten the burden in goal. Paying greater attention to such detail in January, the Leafs allowed just 25 goals in 12 games with Gustavsson thriving with three shutouts along the way; a mind-set theyll strive to re-adapt in the closing stages of February. "I think for the players, its all about playing defence first," Mike Brown said. "Weve stressed that before where at times were looking at too much offence and were not really back-checking with a purpose, coming back and helping out, coming back to home-plate, really getting in a structure. When goalies are struggling, you just have to play that defence-first mentality and help them out." In conversation with TSN 1050 on Wednesday evening, Brian Burke indicated a willingness to at least explore the trade market for goaltenders, a revelation which suggests real concern with whats in place at the moment. For the time being, the best the Leafs can do is support the pair they have. The rest is up to the goaltenders. Cheap China Jerseys . PITTSBURGH -- Pedro Alvarez mashed two home runs that travelled an estimated 831 feet Friday night. It was a series of sprints by the burly Pittsburgh Pirates third baseman, however, that ignited a 12-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Alvarez broke open a close game in the sixth by beating out a potential double play, followed it up with the fifth stolen base of his career then scored with a deft slide around St. Louis catcher Yadier Molinas tag that gave the Pirates the momentum they needed to pull away. "I thought the stolen base was key," manager Clint Hurdle said. "He puts a lot of focus on running the bases and hes arguably one of our best baserunners when hes on." It certainly looked like it, as Alvarezs outstretched left arm slid across the plate a split second before one of the games best defensive catchers could nab him. The Cardinals imploded from there as Shelby Miller (0-1) continued to struggle against Pittsburgh. Miller fell to 0-5 with a 5.92 ERA against the Pirates in his brief career after tying a career-high by allowing five runs in 5 1-3 innings. The right-hander is 16-5 with a 2.34 ERA in his 33 other major league appearances. "Its not the park. Its not the team. I just pitched poorly today," Miller said. "I guess it just lines up that way where I dont pitch well when I face them." Travis Ishikawa added his first major league home run in nearly two years for Pittsburgh. Gerrit Cole (1-0) gave up two runs in seven innings in his first start since losing the deciding Game 5 of the NL division series to St. Louis last October. Six months removed from a taut NLDS that pushed the eventual NL champions to the brink of elimination, the Pirates sent an early message they have no plans of going away. Cole is considered the ace in waiting after a stellar rookie season in which he was arguably Pittsburghs best pitcher over the final six weeks. Eager to take the next step in his development, the 23-year-old kept the Cardinals in check by mixing a fastball that consistently reaches the upper 90s with improved offspeed stuff. He also showcased some of his maturity, working out of a bases loaded situation in the fourth by getting Jhonny Peralta to fly out. His only mistake came in the fifth when Carpenter drilled a shot into the right field stands to pull the Cardinals to 3-2. Otherwise he teamed with catcher Russell Martin to keep St. Louis in check. "I think it was just a really well-played ballgame on our part," Cole said. "I cant say enough about what Russ did behind the plate. Not sure there are any other catchers in the entire world that could handle what I threw at him tonight." Pittsburghs offence -- which mustered all of 20 hits in 35 innings of a season-opening series against the Chicago Cubs -- made sure it didnt stay close for long after pounding out 16 hits in eight innings against the NL Central favourites. Alvarez began the year in a 1 for 15 slump but ended that with a home run to the gap in left-centre for his first home run of the season. He added his second two innings later with a long drive to right-centre that travelled an estimated 448 feet. His hustle down the first-base line in the sixth allowed Pittsburghs rally to continue and the Pirates pressed the advantage. Molina committed a rare error after Alvarezs slide, botching a potential rundown at third base when his throw hit Martin in the back and rolled into the stands. The miscue gave the Pirates a 5-2 lead and Pittsburgh poured it on in the late innings. REGINA - Craig Butler isnt buying the notion that youve got to be good to be lucky. The Saskatchewan Roughriders rookie safety had two interceptions, including a third-quarter pick in the end zone, as the Riders defence led the team to a 19-3 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in CFL action Saturday. "The first one I got lucky," said Butler. "It should have been a touchdown ... I stumbled and fortunately the ball was thrown a little high. On the second one I just read the quarterback and he threw it right to me. "Youve got to be lucky to be good." With the win Saskatchewan (5-12) snapped a five-game losing streak, while also denying Hamilton (8-9) its first winning record in nearly a month. The game had no playoff implications for either team with the Roughriders already out of contention and Hamilton locked into a third-place finish in the East Division. "It just feels good to win," Butler added. "We havent won in awhile so it feels good when you get that W. Theres a lot of positive energy going around and were going to aim to get another one next week." Butler accounted for half of the four turnovers served up by Hamilton quarterback Kevin Glenn as the Riders got it done with youth. Halfback Tyron Brackenridge, making his first CFL start, and second-year cornerback Nick Graham also picked Glenn, and rookie kicker Chris Milo was 3-for-3 on field goal attempts. Milo was good Saturday from 11, 40, and 12 yards, and has now scored 45 of the Riders 59 points over their last six games. He also contributed three punt singles, including a 108-yarder in the first quarter that tied the CFL record set by Zenon Andrusyshyn of the Toronto Argonauts in 1977. "Certainly the defence made a lot of big plays when we needed to make big plays, interceptions in the end zone, just a great job," said Riders head coach Ken Miller. "Our special teams were special today too. They made a lot of big plays. Chris Milo with punting and kicking ... did a great job." Ryan Dinwiddie started at quarterback in place of the injured Darian Durant and finished 7-for-20 with 139 yards but no touchdown throws, extending Saskatchewans streak without one to over 390 minutes. Instead it was fullback Neal Hughes scoring the Riders only touchdown of the day on a three-yard run in the second quarter, giving Saskatchewan a 17-0 halftime lead. Hamiltons only score came on a 47-yard field goal from Justin Medlock to open the third quarter. "We love our head coach too much, we love the fans too much, we love this organization too much, and we love each other too much," said Dinwiddie. "Were not going to quit on each other." Dinwiddie rotated early on with Cole Bergquist, who threw his first CFL passes and finished 0-for-2. The Tiger-Cats also split quarterbacking duties, using both Kevin Glenn and starter Quinton Porter. Porter finished 6-of-13 for 53 yards while Glenn went 14-for-22 with 171 yards. Saskatchewans Dallas Baker led all receivers with 86 yards, including a 72-yard catch-and-run in the first quarter that set up Milos first field goal. The Roughriders will close out their 2011 season Friday in Edmonton against the Eskimos. Hamilton meanwhile will aim to finish 9-9 for a third straight season with a road win Thursday over Toronto. NOTES: Saskatchewan slotback Jason Clermonts only catch of the day, an eight-yarder in the first quarter, was the 500th of his CFL career ... The Buckeyes answered with a quick flurry. Interception return, touchdown. Two plays, touchdown. Six plays, touchdown. Two plays, touchdown. And that was just in the first quarter. Doran Grant picked off the first pass of the game, scoring on a 33-yard return, and Braxton Miller threw for 233 yards and four touchdowns as No. 4 Ohio State extended the nations longest winning streak to 21 with a record-breaking rout 56-0 of Purdue. "I saw, not necessarily a sleepy look, but I just didnt like what I saw in our pregame," said Meyer, the Buckeyes coach. "So we brought them in here and kind of rattled them up a little bit and made sure they woke up." Did they ever. The Buckeyes produced the highest scoring total and most lopsided victory margin in the 56-game series, surpassing marks they set in a 49-0 victory in 2010. They handed Purdue (1-7, 0-4) its first back-to-back shutouts in six decades, and the 56-point loss matched the worst in Boilermakers history. Purdue lost 56-0 to Iowa on Oct. 28, 1922 and 56-0 to Chicago on Nov. 9, 1907. It was hardly a surprise. Ohio State (9-0, 5-0) hasnt lost in 22 months. Meyer tied a personal best by winning his 22nd consecutive game, which includes his final victory at Florida. Miller went 19 of 23 before giving way to Kenny Guiton for good in the second half. Guiton was 8 of 11, throwing one TD pass and running for two more. He finished with 98 yards rushing on nine carries, second only to Carlos Hyde who ran for 111 yards on eight carries. Tight end Jeff Heuerman caught five passes for a career-high 116 yards and was one of five different Ohio State receivers to score. Plus, the Buckeyes defence forced two turnovers, added six more sacks to their Big Ten-leading number and limited the Boilermakers to 116 total yards as a large contingent of scarlet-and-grey clad fans turned the road game into a pseudo home contest in the second half when most of the Boilermakers fans left. The combination was enough to keep Ohio State on track for a second straight perfect season and a potential berth in the BCS title game. But the Buckeyes, admittedly, needed some early help. "It was an early morniing, we had to get up early, we had to get prepared, we had to eat well," Miller said.dddddddddddd "We had to get the guys going and the coaches talked to us and got us hyped." Purdue certainly didnt need that. The game that was billed as a blackout turned into a washout. How bad was it? Etling, the freshman, was 13 of 29 for 89 yards. Purdues mistake-prone secondary was gouged so often by the Ohio State quarterbacks that the Boilers gave up a record-breaking scoring total in Ross-Ade Stadium for the second time this season. The Boilermakers head into next weeks game against Iowa with eight consecutive scoreless quarters and with the dubious achievement of failing to reach the red zone for the third consecutive game. Purdue hasnt taken a snap inside the opponents 20-yard line since late in a Sept. 28 loss to Northern Illinois, and still hasnt beaten a Football Bowl Subdivision since Darrell Hazell took over the program after last season. "We didnt tackle very well, (on defence) and we need to get off the blocks," Hazell said. "We cant get a quarterback beat up the way we did. We had problems in pass protection." Miller & Co. made them pay for those miscues, seemingly every time. On the games second snap, Grant stepped in front of B.J. Knauf, picked off Etlings pass and sprinted 33 yards to make it 7-0. Miller then threw a 40-yard TD pass to a wide open Jeff Heuerman on the Buckeyes second offensive play to give Ohio State a 14-0 lead. Before the first quarter ended, Miller threw an 8-yard TD pass to Nick Vannett and a 2-yard shovel pass for a TD to Corey Brown to make it 28-0. Not enough? Guiton threw a 1-yard TD pass to Chris Fields midway through the second quarter, and Miller hooked up with Ezekiel Elliott on a 10-yard scoring pass later in the first half to make it 42-0 at the half. Guiton ran for two scores in the second half to close out the milestone victory. "Were just playing Ohio State ball," Hyde said after the Buckeyes rolled up 640 yards in offence. "I expect this out of the offensive group, you know. Just come out and be explosive all day and put points up and put up yards. Thats what I expect from us." ' ' '

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Mike Moustakas scored on an Albert Pujols fielding error in the eighth inning, as Kansas City topped St. Louis, 5-4, in the opener of a three-game set at Busch Stadium. Moustakas walked leading off the eighth, advanced to second on a Matt Treanor sacrifice bunt. After Chris Getz lined out, Alcides Escobar grounded a ball toward Pujols at first, but the ball went under his glove and rolled into right field. Alex Gordon slapped a two-RBI single and Jeff Francoeur picked up a run- scoring base hit for the Royals, who blew a 3-0 lead but managed to snap a two-game skid. Lance Berkman had a three-run double for St. Louis, losers of seven in a row. Chris Carpenter (1-7) pitched eight innings in defeat, giving up five runs -- four earned -- on 10 hits. He had seven strikeouts, but has gone 0-5 over his last seven appearances. I dont know what the deal is, Carpenter said. I felt like I had good stuff and made pretty good pitches, they got some runs and some hits and we lost. Blake Wood (3-0) tossed a scoreless seventh for the Royals to pick up the victory. Joakim Soria pitched the ninth to earn his 11th save of the season. St. Louis brought Pujols to the plate with one out in the bottom of the ninth, with a chance to tie or win the game after Jon Jay singled, but he grounded a ball to third base. Moustakas threw to second for the force out to end the game. Kansas City used three singles by Melky Cabrera, Eric Hosmer and Francoeur to plate a run in the first inning. The Royals put runners on second and third with only one out in the second inning on singles by Getz and Escobar. Both men scored on a bloop single to left by Gordon. The Cardinals rallied for four runs in the third to take the lead. Two walks and a single from Jay loaded the bases for Matt Holliday, who was plunked by a Felipe Paulino pitch to gift the Cardinals their first run. The bags remained loaded for Berkman, who has six career grand slams, but he settled for a three run double down the line in right. Tyler Greene struck out swinging to end the inning, leaving the bases full again. He totally lost it, he just lost it, Royals manager Ned Yost said of his starting pitcher. He went and got two quick outs and the key was the walk to [Skip] Schumaker. Those guys at the top of that order, youve gotta make them swing the bats. The Royals came right back in the fourth. With runners at the corners, Paulino sent a bunt in front of the plate. Catcher Tony Cruz elected to go for the force-out at second. Once Cruz let the ball go, Getz broke for the plate and beat the return throw home from shortstop Greene. The Royals put two runners on in the seventh with one out on singles by Cabrera and pinch-hitter Mitch Maier. Carpenter escaped trouble by striking out Hosmer and Francoeur. GAME NOTES:Tony La Russa managed his 2,500th game in a St. Louis Cardinals uniform...St. Louis leads the all-time series against KC, 36-28...The season series between the Missouri rivals stands knotted at two games apiece...Paulino tossed six innings, giving up five hits...Carpenter threw 124 pitches. wholesale jerseys china . Justin Williams scored twice to lead the Kings to a 5-4 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. Drew Doughty, Matt Greene, and Trevor Lewis also scored to help Los Angeles win its third straight. Patric Hornqvist scored twice and Martin Erat and Sergei Kostitsyn had the other goals for Nashville, loser of two of its last three. With the score tied 3-3 after two periods, Greene put the Kings ahead at 1:15 of the third on a slap shot from the right point. Lewis had a tap in from just off the left post at 3:00 to make it 5-3. Hornqvists 20th of the season pulled the Predators within one with 5:18 to go. "We got close," Hornqvist said. "I thought after that, it was all about us and they backed up. In the neutral zone, they took away our speed. We cant let five goals in a game. We need to clean up defensively." Williams has 15 goals on the season, and three in his last three games. He has five points in three games against Nashville this season. Predators goalie Pekka Rinne was removed after Lewis scored. The NHLs leader in goaltending victories gave up five goals on the 24 shots he faced and was replaced by backup Anders Lindback. "To me, it just wasnt Peks night," Nashville coach Barry Trotz said. "We werent helping him a whole lot. You have to help him in the crease area. Four is usually my limit with Peks, and I thought we still had a lot of game to go with, and I thought I would give him one more." Erat tied the score at 2 at 9:16 of the second with a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that beat Kings goalie Jonathan Quick on the short side. "They are tough to beat. "We scored some timely goals. This was a huge two points for us." Doughty put the Kings ahead with 7:39 to go in the period and Kostitsyn tied it 3-3 with 5:55 remaining. "Our defencemen scored two goals by getting shots through, getting it past the first guy," Los Angeles coach Darryl Sutter said. "That really was the difference. Our defence was more involved offensively than they have been." Williams scored the games first goal at 6:16 of the opening period. From just below the goal line to the right of the Nashville goal, he sent the puck toward an out-of-position Rinne and the puck bounced off the goalies right skate and then tricked across the line. "We wanted to make Rinne work tonight," Williams said. "We felt the last few games we havent gotten as much shots on net as we should have. We tried to put as many as we could at him." Hornqvist tied it with 1:19 left in the period with a wrist shot from the high slot that beat Quick high to the glove side. Williams put Los Angeles back ahead 12 seconds later. Driving toward the Nashville net on the left side, he got just enough of Slava Voynovs pass from above the right circle to put it over Rinnes right pad. It was the first time since Feb. 7 the Predators allowed more than one goal in the first period. NOTES: Los Angeles D Rob Scuderi played in his 200th consecutive game. ...
