It turned out to be the worst-case scenario. Driskel broke his lower right leg Saturday in the first quarter of the 19th-ranked Gators 31-17 victory over Tennessee, a season-ending injury that thrust seldom-used backup Tyler Murphy onto the field for the most significant action of his four-year career. Murphy responded better than anyone could have realistically expected. He had a 52-yard touchdown throw to Solomon Patton, a swing pass that went the distance, and made several huge plays with his legs as Florida (2-1, 1-0 SEC) won its ninth consecutive game in the series. Driskel, who was playing with a brace on his sprained left knee, broke his right leg while throwing an interception in the first quarter. Devaun Swafford picked off the pass and returned it 62 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead. Marlon Walls pulled Driskel to the ground and landed on his leg as he released the ball. Driskel tried to get up, but then dropped back to the turf and called for trainers. He limped off the field a few minutes later, got checked on the sideline and then used crutches to get to the locker room. "I hurt for him and I hurt for us right now," Muschamp said. "Its going to hurt us. Hes a guy thats won a lot of ballgames here, and its disappointing for him right now." It was a solid debut for Murphy, a junior whose only pass attempt came on a 2-point attempt two weeks ago. "It was always in the back of my mind that I might never play," Murphy said. "I just kept working hard and kept fighting and kept faith in myself and kept praying for an opportunity. It wasnt the way I wanted it, but an opportunity is an opportunity." Murphys 7-yard TD scamper in the fourth quarter made it 31-10 and sent fans scrambling for the exits. The Volunteers (2-2, 0-1) had hoped to rebound from an embarrassing, 59-14 loss at No. 2 Oregon a week ago. Instead, Tennessee and first-year coach Butch Jones left Gainesville with another double-digit setback. Jones strangest decision might have been to bench Justin Worley and give redshirt freshman Nathan Peterman his first career start on the road and in front of 90,000. Peterman, who grew up in nearby Jacksonville, had three turnovers in a 17-minute span in the first half and was benched at the break. Adam Duvall Jersey. He completed 4 of 11 passes for 5 yards, with two interceptions and a fumble. "To beat a team at home, you cant turn the football over," Jones said. "Way too many turnovers." Worley wasnt a whole lot better against a Florida defence which has been mostly dominant through three games. Worley, who started the first three games, finished 10 of 23 for 149 yards, with a touchdown and two interceptions. "Losing is never accepted or tolerated at Tennessee," Jones said. "But Im proud of our team. They showed resiliency. They didnt quit. They gave us an opportunity to be in the game at the end of the game. We have to keep getting better. We have to keep things in perspective as we continue to build this football program. We took some small steps, but we have a long way to go." Where Florida goes from here will largely depend on Murphy. He completed 8 of 14 passes for 134 yards. He ran 10 times for 84 yards. "He didnt just manage our team," Muschamp said. "He produced in critical situations." Murphy made a few mistakes, but only one costly one. He wasnt looking and took a snap off his facemask, a botched play that resulted in a fumble. That was one of nine turnovers on the day. The Volunteers had six -- four in the first half. Peterman had three, and Raijon Neal fumbled on the teams second play. Dante Fowler Jr. wrecked the exchange, his first of several big plays. Florida had three turnovers in the first half, including running back Matt Jones second in two games. Jones was benched in favour of Mack Brown, who ran 24 times for 86 yards and a touchdown. Muschamp said hes going to go with the "hot hand" at running back beginning next week at Kentucky. This much is certain: Murphy will be under centre. Murphy has been buried on the depth chart, watching from the sideline as Driskel, Jacoby Brissett, John Brantley, Jordan Reed and Trey Burton all took snaps ahead of him the last three years. He considered transferring, but refused to listen to all the people urging him to change positions. "I just didnt want to give up," Murphy said. "I felt like if I changed positions, I would have gave up on myself and I probably wouldnt be able to live with myself." ' ' '

Kyle Korver scored 20 points, including four free throws in the final 16 seconds, and Atlanta fought off Houstons late comeback to beat the Rockets 83-80 on Friday night. Paul Millsap also had 20 points for Atlanta, which earned its second straight impressive home win following a victory over Indiana on Wednesday night. The two victories were important following a three-game losing streak and Horfords torn right pectoral muscle in late December. "Its a real good win for us because it really shows we played some good teams and we actually played some good defence," Millsap said. "It started with the defence and if we continue to keep that up, well be fine." James Harden led the Rockets with 25 points. Dwight Howard had 15 points and 11 rebounds. Houston coach Kevin McHale said his players "were just stuck in the mud offensively." Aaron Brooks had 13 points, including a trio of 3-pointers, and Jeremy Lin added 11 for Houston. "I think they took the game in the second half with how hard they played on defence," Lin said. The Hawks overcame Houstons 11-0 run to start the game. The Rockets then battled back from an eight-point deficit with another 11-0 run to regain the lead at 76-73. Korvers 3-pointer tied the game. Following a basket by Harden, DeMarre Carrolls 3-pointer gave Atlanta a 79-78 lead. The Hawks didnt trail again. "I think the group is really starting to trust each other defensively," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. "The competitiveness that theyre putting out there, it starts on the defensive end of the court. ... Its just good to see that trust being built up." The strong defensive effort came against one of the highest-scoring teams in the NBA. Entering the game, the Rockets ranked third in the league with their average of 105.8 points. Harden, who had seven assists and five turnovers, was unable to extend his streak of three straight games with at least 37 points. "Guys just couldnt get into a rhythm," he said. "Guys were just sluggish tonight, including myself." It was a disappointiing start to Houstons four-game road trip. Geronimo Allison Super Bowl Jersey. "We talked about it before the game," Harden said. "We just came out flat." With Atlanta leading 79-78, Korver made two free throws to push Atlantas lead to three points. Following a timeout, Harden drove toward the basket and passed to Lin, whose foot was on the 3-point line as he sank a jumper with 6.5 seconds left, cutting the Hawks lead to 81-80. The Rockets quickly fouled Korver, who made both free throws. Houston couldnt get off an attempt at a last-second 3. The Hawks matched their season low for first-half points but trailed only 41-39 at the break. Official reviews confirmed Atlantas first basket and last shot from the field in the half came after the clock expired. Millsaps layup, which initially was approved for a 2-all tie, was disallowed when the review showed it came after the 24-second clock expired. Jeff Teagues layup at the end of the half, which would have tied the game, came after time expired. Korver made 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions midway through the third period for the first tie at 57-all. Millsaps driving basket gave Atlanta its first lead at 61-59, and the Hawks stretched the lead to 73-65 with 8:32 remaining. Mistakes by the Hawks, including a 24-second violation, a missed layup by Pero Antic and a turnover by Millsap, helped the Rockets close the gap. Brooks 3-pointer cut Atlantas lead to 73-72. Harden made two of three free throws with 3:50 remaining to give Houston its first lead of the period at 74-73. Rockets forward Chandler Parsons missed his second straight game with a sore right knee. Ronnie Brewer was the fill-in starter. Korver extended his NBA record of consecutive games with at least one 3-pointer to 106 when he made his first of four 3s with 9:03 left in the first half. NOTES: NBA great Julius Erving had a front-row seat. ... Howard, an Atlanta native, purchased 35 tickets for the game. ... The Hawks 10 first-quarter points set a season low for any quarter and was the low allowed by the Rockets in any quarter. ... Houston C Omer Asik (right thigh, knee) missed his 18th straight game. ... F Greg Smith (sprained right knee) returned and had four points after missing the Rockets previous game. ' ' '

DALLAS -- Former Dallas Cowboys tackle Josh Brent will spend at least 45 days in rehab following his release from jail in the drunken-driving death of a teammate and a return to his former team remains a possibility. Solomon Thomas Super Bowl Jersey . Brent was released Sunday after serving about five months in jail for the wreck that killed Cowboys practice squad linebacker Jerry Brown, his close friend and college teammate at Illinois. A judge ordered Brent to spend at least 45 days in a residential facility for substance abuse as part of his sentence of 10 years of probation. Brent avoided prison time at trial -- he faced up to 20 years -- and at 26, he could presumably seek to re-enter the league. His agent, Peter Schaffer, declined Monday to discuss Brents pro prospects. "Its up to the treatment professionals as to whats best for him and he will do whatever they think is best," Schaffer said. "Nothing else matters right now." Brent and Brown were headed home from a nightclub in December 2012 when Brent lost control of his Mercedes and crashed on a suburban Dallas highway. Officers arriving at the scene saw Brent trying to pull Browns body from the wreckage. Tests showed Brents blood-alcohol level was 0.18 per cent, more than twice the states legal limit for drivers. A prosecution expert estimated that the 320-pound lineman would have had to have as many as 17 drinks on the night of the crash. Brent did not play after the crash and announced his retirement from the Cowboys before the trial. League spokesman Greg Aiello said Monday that Brent can apply for reinstatement through the office of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, who must also consider whether to discipline Brent under the leagues personal conduct policy. As a possible precedent, Goodell suspended NFL wide receiver Donte Stallworth for the entire 2009 season after Stallworth pleaded guilty to a DUI manslaughter charge in Florida. While acknowledging that the league will have "a big say" in Brents future, Cowboys executive vice-president Stephen Jones said recently that the team had not ruled out his return. Team executives and players have stood by Brent after the crash, with the support of Browns mother, Stacey Jackson. Brent was starting in place of the injured Jay Ratliff at the time of the crash, and had 31 tackles in 39 games over three seasons in Dallas. Dallas County prosecutors have said they wont object to Brent attempting a comeback, as long as he doesnt violate his probation. Brent was jailed briefly before trial after testing positive twice for marijuana. His probation conditions are expected to include restrictions on drug use and travel. Matt Breida Super Bowl Jersey . The first baseman hit a two-run homer in the top of the ninth inning to lead the Mets to a thrilling come-from-behind 3-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers.CLEVELAND -- The Super Bowl is set. The Browns coaching search remains incomplete. The quest to replace Rob Chudzinski enters its fourth week. Clevelands plans to interview Denver offensive co-ordinator Adam Gase have been further delayed after the Broncos advanced to the Super Bowl with a 26-16 win over New England in Sundays AFC championship game. The 35-year-old Gase is high on the Browns list of candidates to become the clubs seventh coach since 1999, and the team must now wait until after Denvers Feb. 2 matchup against Seattle before they can meet with him. Its possible the Browns will move on without Gase. He was the first candidate the Browns asked permission to speak with after firing Chudzinski in the hours following a Dec. 29 loss at Pittsburgh. Gase, though, declined Clevelands offer for an interview so he could focus on the Broncos playoff run and there have been reports hes content working with Peyton Manning and would like to spend at least one more season on Denvers staff. While the Browns decide what move to make with Gase, they can conduct a second interview with Seahawks defensive co-ordinator Dan Quinn. The 43-year-old was the first candidate interviewed by Browns owner Jimmy Haslam and CEO Joe Banner, who have met with at least eight known candidates but not offered anyone the job. Quinn has directed the NFLs top defence this season and he reportedly impressed the Browns during his initial interview on Jan. 1. Per NFL rules, if tthe Browns want to meet again with Quinn, they must do so before Jan. Ronnie Lott Super Bowl Jersey. 26 and Seattle would have to grant Cleveland permission. Also, league rules prohibit teams from finalizing deals with assistant coaches still in the post-season. So even if the Browns meet again with Quinn, the club cant discuss a contract until after the Super Bowl. The delays have further damaged the perception that the Browns didnt have a strong plan in place when they fired Chudzinski, who went 4-12 in his one season. Last week, Haslam wrote a letter to Cleveland fans explaining the reasons for the clubs "methodical" approach in finding a new coach. The Browns may also conduct a second interview with Buffalo defensive co-ordinator Mike Pettine. He met with Haslam and Banner on Thursday and the 47-year-old could be helped by the tie-ups with Gase and Quinn. Pettine is coming off his first season with the Bills after four seasons as defensive co-ordinator for the New York Jets. Dallas special teams coach Rich Bisaccia met with the Browns on Saturday. He interviewed with Washington before the Redskins hired Jay Gruden. Its possible other names could surface this week. And beyond a head coach, the Browns need to replace their co-ordinators after Ray Horton took the defensive job with Tennessee and Norv Turner went to Minnesota. The team is not commenting on the coaching search or confirming any interviews as it looks for a fourth coach in six years. ' ' '

Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn. Jason Spriggs Jersey .ca. Kerry, In the first period of Saturdays Montreal-Ottawa game, Brendan Gallagher is called for goaltender interference. Craig Anderson is outside the blue paint trying to make the save. When is it legal to make contact with the goalie without a penalty? It seems they can leave the crease, wander around, check a player but touch the goalie and a penalty is called! If his domain is the blue ice then stay in there and if you come out be prepared to bite the bullet! Bill George --- I have a short question regarding a rule in international hockey. At this years WJHC, I noticed numerous times that play was whistled down when a player from one team entered the crease of the opposing teams goalie. Yet other times when a goal was scored by a player who had also clearly been in the crease. Why is the play not blown dead then or the goal taken back like the days of old in the NHL? Or is this a rule as entertaining or confusing as the shoulder vs. crossbar high stick call? Thank you for your time,Jason Hoef Bill: In watching the play closely we see that Craig Anderson was actually set to play a shot (butterfly position) at the top of his goal crease with both skates and pads visible inside the blue paint. Montreals gritty little pest, Brendan Gallagher attempted to set a legal screen tight to the top Andersons crease and while facing the shooter. In doing so, Gallagher reached back with his left glove (top of stick hand) which contacted Anderson in the facemask and knocked the Sens goalie off of his set position. Due to the fact that Gallagher reached back with his hand and stick resulting in contact with Craig Anderson inside his goal crease, the referee deemed it to be more deliberate than incidental and assessed the appropriate penalty for goalkeeper interference. The overriding rationale and language of rule 69 (Interference on the Goalkeeper) is that a goalkeeper should have the ability to move freely within his goal crease without being hindered by the actions of an attacking player. In all cases in which an attacking player initiates intentional or deliberate contact with a goalkeeper, whether or not the goalkeeper is inside or outside the goal crease and whether or not a goal is scored, the attacking player will receive a penalty. Lets take the scenario where the goalie is setup outside of his goal crease to cut down the angle and for the purpose of challenging the shooter, Rule 69.4 applies: If an attacking player initiates any contact with a goalkeeper, other than incidental contact, while the goalkeeper is outside his goal crease, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed. A goalkeeper is not "fair game" just because he is outside the goal crease. The appropriate penalty should be assessed in every case where an attacking player makes unnecessary contact with the goalkeeper. However, incidental contact will be permitted when the goalkeeper is in the act of playing the puck outside his goal crease provided the attacking player has made a reasonable effort to avoid such unnecessary contact. The ambiguity contained in the language of this rule beginning with the word "However…" places huge responsibility and pressure on the referee to ascertain incidental contact and if the attacking player made a "reasonable" effort to avoid such contact! Most often the benefit will (and should) go to the goalkeeper that is set to defend the incoming shot. When a goalkeepers motion/movement outside of his crease and prior to establishing a full set, results in contact with an attacking player and a goal results it should be deemed a good goal. The harsh truth, Bill, is that goalkeepers are provided special protection due to the unique nature of their position as provided and defined by the rules committee. Jason: The IIHF rule book states: Rule 534 - Interference - If an attacking player deliberately stands in the goal crease, without interfering with the goalkeeper, the referee shall stop the play and the ensuing face-off shall take place at the nearest face-off spot in the neutral zone. As you alluded to, Jason, once the puck enters the goal crease attacking players are allowed to enter the crease and legally play the puck. Rules then apply to the legal scoring of a goal. PHILADELPHIA -- Francisco Liriano tossed eight dominant innings against Philadelphia. The only time the Phillies managed to score was in the ninth after Lirianos work was done. Liriano struck out a season-high 12, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Phillies 4-1 on Thursday night. He allowed only six baserunners. Pittsburgh won for the seventh time in eight games to strengthen their hold on the second wild-card spot in the National League. Ike Davis and Neil Walker broke out of slumps with RBI hits, and the Pirates scored three times in the sixth inning. Liriano (5-10) got rare run support from his teammates, who had scored three runs or fewer in 13 of the lefthanders last 17 appearances. He struck out at least 12 for the fifth time in his career and won his second consecutive decision. "I feel great, like I had pretty good command," Liriano said. "I feel great physically and mentally. Everything is getting better, location-wise. Im just trying to get better every start." He finished three strikeouts shy of his career-best of 15. "I got a lot of swings and misses," said Liriano, who has allowed only 17 earned runs in his last 69 innings, dating to July 18. Mark Melancon allowed one of two runners left by Jared Hughes to score in the ninth, but earned his 29th save in 33 opportunities. Philadelphia starter A.J. Burnett (8-16) allowed four runs and six hits in six innings. Burnett, a member of the Pirates rotation last season, also was impressed by his former teammate Liriano. "Thats the best Ive seen him in a long time," he said. Walker went 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI, and Russell Martin singled, scored a run and drove in another for Pittsburgh, which took three of four from Philadelphia. The Pirates got on the board when Davis, in a 2-for-18 slump, singled to score Martin in the second inning. In the sixth, Walker -- mired in a 1-for-14 rut -- doubled in Travis Snider to make it 2-0. Martin added a sacrifice fly, and Gregory Polanco followed with an RBI single. Liriano did the rest to make the lead hold up. "Everything looks like a fastball coming at you," said Martin,, Lirianos catcher. https://www.cheapredwings.com/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Detroit Red Wings Store. . "You can tell yourself a slider is coming, but your mind is telling you its a fastball, then it breaks." Josh Harrison, who entered with an NL-best .318 average, went 0-for-5 for Pittsburgh. He dropped to .314 and into second place behind Colorados Justin Morneau. The Phillies -- who have lost six of seven -- batted .156 (10-for-64) in their last two games against Pittsburgh. An RBI single in the ninth inning by Carlos Ruiz prevented their 14th shutout loss of the season. "He had great stuff with a real good changeup," said Freddy Galvis, who had one of Philadelphias six hits. "He had a good night." Burnett, who led the NL in strikeouts last season while pitching for Pittsburgh, fanned seven Pirates. TRAINERS ROOM Pirates: LF Starling Marte was briefly back in the lineup. One night after being hit by a pitch in the hand in the first inning, Marte was plunked in the second inning. Marte left in the third due to discomfort in his left arm, and was replaced by Polanco. . RHP Charlie Morton, out with a sports hernia since Aug. 15, will throw a light bullpen session on Friday. Phillies: LF Domonic Brown didnt start because of a bruised left shoulder. He likely wouldnt have played anyway against a left-handed pitcher, manager Ryne Sandberg said. . Sandberg said there is still no timetable for the return of SS Jimmy Rollins, who strained his left hamstring on Monday. UP NEXT Pirates: RHP Gerrit Cole (8-5, 3.89) gets the ball in the opener of three-game series with the visiting Chicago Cubs. Cole, 4-0 against the Cubs, will oppose LHP Tsuyoshi Wada (4-2,2.95). Phillies: LHP Cole Hamels (8-7, 2.56), who owns the NLs third-lowest ERA, opens the weekend series against visiting Miami. He will face Marlins RHP Henderson Alvarez (10-6,2.8. END OF THE LINE Phillies CF Ben Revere snapped an 0-for-14 slump with a sixth inning single. It was the longest hitless streak of the season for Revere, who entered in fourth place in the NL batting race. Pirates: Marte had two streaks end: a 10-game hitting streak and a run of five consecutive multi-hit games. ' ' '

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. Dean Lowry Super Bowl Jersey . -- Canadas Milos Raonic defeated Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France on Saturday to advance to the third round of the BNP Paribas Open. The No. 10 ranked Raonic, of Thornhill, Ont., had 33 aces to edge Roger-Vasselin 7-6 (4), 4-6, 7-6 (2). Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Andy Murray and Stanislas Wawrinka -- who were all playing their opening matches of the tournament -- also won on Saturday. Federer, the four-time champion seeded seventh, beat French qualifier Pail-Henri Mathieu. The Swiss star was coming off his 78th career title last week in Dubai. "Its important to win," he said. "Its a lot different from Dubai. You have to force a bit more, but Im satisfied." In a late match, the top-seeded Nadal rallied to beat Radek Stepanek 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. "He is not the right player to play against in the first round," Nadal said. "Hes not the right player because what you want to find in the first round is rhythm and against him every point is different. He goes quick to the net. They dont give you that few games to find your rhythm, to find a way that you want to play." Nadal is 41-6 in his 10 appearances here and has made it to the semifinals or better for the past eight years. But he said worries about his back affected his serve during the 2-hour, 24-minute contest. "With my serve I was doing nothing. When that happens, the opponent is able to play more aggressive, play more confident and in the end, eight double faults, I give him an opportunity to win a lot of free points," Nadal said. "I was a little bit scared for the back. I am not feeling 100 per cent confident with my serve. But probably that match is going to help me understand that I can start to serve normal again." The fifth-seeded Murray topped Lukas Rosol 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and the third-seeded Wawrinka, playing for the first time since winning the Australian Open, beat Ivo Karlovic 6-3, 7-5. Kevin Anderson and Tommy Haas also moved into the third round. Anderson spoiled two-time tournament champion Lleyton Hewitts bid for his 600th career match win, topping the Australian 7-6 (5), 6-4. Haas, who will be 36 on April 3, rolled to a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Jeremy Chardy. In womens play, top-seeded Na beat Chinese compatriot Zheng Jie 6-1, 7-5, and fourth-seeded Maria Sharapova opened her title defence with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Julia Goerges. Fifth-seeded Angelique Kerber dropped out, falling 2-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4 to Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor. Aleksandra Wozniack of Blainville, Que., also beat No. 15 Sabine Lisicki 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (5). Murray reached the final in 2009, but has mostly struggled in the event. "I think its important sometimes to think about it, because when youre not expecting it to happen and then it does, thats when it can kind of take you by surprise and you might panic a little bit or worry," Murray said. "But I dont feel like (that happened) today. I was a set and a break down. I got broken three times in a row the end of the first set, beginning of the second. I just kind of kept going and found a way to win, which is always the most important thing." Mikhail Youzhny, seeded 14th, withdrew because of a back injury and the American mens contingent was trimmed from its initial 14 members to one after losses by Michael Russell, Sam Querrey, Tim Smyczek and Ryan Harrison. The only U.S. player remaining is 12th seed John Isner, who will face Nikolay Davydenko on Sunday. Li is playing her second event since winning the Australian Open. "This is the first match after Doha, two weeks, and of course for I cannot be 100 per cent for the first match," Li said. "But I was happy. At least I can learn something from todays match." Li will face Karolina Pliskova, a 7-5, 6-2 winner over No. 28 Klara Zakopalova. Eighth-seeded Petra Kvitova, No. 11 Ana Ivanovic and No. 12 Dominika Cibulkova also won early matches. In first-round doubles action, Raonic and Latvian partner Ernests Gulbis edged Serbian pair Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic 7-6 (3), 6-1. Torontos Daniel Nestor and Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia beat Juan Martin Del Potro of Argentina and Marin Cilic of Croatia 4-6, 6-3, 10-8. The Reds want players to keep their beards and their locks in check. First-year manager Bryan Price wants players hair and beards to be neatly kept this season, in line with the teams policy on appearances. A few of the Reds have long hair and beards. Starter Johnny Cuetos hair still covers his name on the back of his jersey. Price is fine with it. "Our initial policy was facial hair was fine, but just keep it under control," Price said on Saturday. The Boston Red Sox made long, scraggly beards their identity last season on their way to a World Series championship. Boston players shaved them off after the season, with several players donating the hair for charity fundraisers. The Reds were known for their strict hair and appearance policies in the 1970s and 1980s. They insisted that players stay clean-shaven and show their red stirrups in uniform. When reliever Jim Kern wanted a trade during the 1982 season, he grew a beard in violationn of the teams policy and was sent to the White Sox. ZaDarius Smith Super Bowl Jersey. The policy even applied to the media guide. When the Reds got infielder Wayne Krenchicki, they only photo available showed him with a moustache. The team covered up the moustache in the media guide photo. Price has no desire to go back to those days. "I dont think youre going to be terribly successful sitting there trying to turn the clock back on the clubhouse too far," Price said. He plans to meet with some of the teams leaders when the position players report for their first workout on Monday and get their thoughts about some proposed rules. All teams have policies on whats expected of players. "I dont think theres anybody in there thats looking to turn this place into Fantasy Island and go crazy in there," Price said. "I think everyone likes to understand what the rules are and where the lines are drawn. But I think its something worth discussing with the players instead of mandating them unilaterally." ' ' '

BOSTON -- The names that Boston Celtics general manager Danny Ainge didnt mention said all anyone needed to know about how he views the teams future. https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/" class="TyTxtSmlC">China Jerseys For Sale . After trading up three spots to get Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk in the NBA draft on Thursday night, Ainge described him as a complementary player who will fit in well with Rajon Rondo, Avery Johnson and Jeff Green. No mention of the teams biggest stars, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. "Cant talk about it," Ainge said when the omission was pointed out to him. But asked if there were any untradeable players on the roster, he said, "If Wilt Chamberlain and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar were traded, I guess everybodys tradable." According to a person with knowledge of the talks, the Celtics and Nets were nearing completion of a deal that would send Garnett and Pierce to Brooklyn in exchange for a package that included three first-round draft picks. The person confirmed the talks to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private. Although the details were not final -- the deal cannot be submitted to the NBA office until next month -- the Celtics were expected to get Gerald Wallace, the expiring contract of Kris Humphries and one other player while sending Jason Terry to Brooklyn. The deal would complete the breakup of the core that brought Boston its NBA-record 17th championship in 2008. The process began earlier this week when the Celtics traded coach Doc Rivers to the Los Angeles Clippers for a first-round draft pick in 2015. Boston and Los Angeles had discussed a deal for Garnett, who has a no-trade clause but was expected to waive it to remain with Rivers. But NBA commissioner David Stern said coaches could not be dealt for active players -- as opposed to draft choices -- and nixed any future deals between the Celtics and Clippers. Instead, the Celtics talked to Brooklyn. The inclusion of Pierce, who is due $15 million next season, and the possibility of swapping a rebuilding team for a contender was expected to encourage Garnett to go along. "Thats what Danny wants to do is rebuild," Rivers said from Clippers draft headquarters. "Its sad to see everybody leave Boston. You just want them to go someplace where they have a chance to win, and they have." After winning five straight Atlantic Division titles, the Celtics tumbled down the Eastern Conference standings this season, dropping all the way to the No. 7 seed before being eliminated by the New York Knicks in the first round. Ainge has said he wanted to avoid the precipitous fall and long rebuilding process in the 1990s that followed the aging of the original Big Three of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and Robert Parish -- his teammates on the teams that won it all in 1984 and 86. The Celtics were no closer to a title -- and in the midst of the longest championship drought in franchise history -- when Ainge arrived in 2003. He rode them into the draft lottery, and when the ping pong balls failed to deliver a star, he traded for Garnett and Ray Allen to join Pierce in a New Big Three that won the NBA title in its first year and returned to the finals two years later. But the team regressed after losing in the 2010 finals in seven games, and in the first-round loss to the Knicks this spring, Pierce and Garnett looked worn down. That convinced Rivers that his future was elsewhere, and Garnett and Pierce arent far behind. Instead, the Celtics begin their rebuilding around Rondo, the one player Ainge said he was not looking to trade. They also have Bradley joining him in the backcourt and Green to fill Pierces role, and now Olynyk to join Jared Sullinger at power forward after Garnetts gone. "I think were in a much better place than we were when I got here 10 years ago," Ainge said. "Our objective is to do it less painfully and to do it with more speed." Ainge sent the No. 16 pick and two future second-rounders to the Dallas Mavericks to get Olynyk, who was fifth in voting for the Wooden Award. Olynyk averaged 17.8 points and 7.3 rebounds while shooting 63 per cent from the field while leading Gonzaga to a 32-3 season. Ainge said Olynyk was athletic, playing quarterback for his high school football team. "I dont know too many players who played quarterback in high school as a 7-footer," Ainge said. The Celtics entered the night without a second-round pick, but they bought the No. 53 overall selection from the Indiana Pacers for cash and used it to pick centre Colton Iverson from Colorado State. A person with knowledge of the deal confirmed the transaction Thursday night on condition of anonymity because it was not yet official. Iverson is a 7-foot, 255-pound centre who started his career at Minnesota. Last season, after transferring to Colorado State, he led the team in scoring with 14.2 points and rebounding at 9.8. https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/lamonte-hunley-jersey-store/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Lamonte Hunley Jersey Store .com) - Matt Beleskey has helped give the Anaheim Ducks some scoring depth and hell look to stay hot on Wednesday night when his club hosts the struggling Philadelphia Flyers. https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/" class="TyTxtSmlC">China Jerseys Wholesale . -- Derek Jeter says the New York Yankees have no choice but to move forward now that Alex Rodriguez has accepted his suspension for the 2014 season. https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/" class="TyTxtSmlC">https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/ . LOUIS - David Ortiz deserves a lot of love for his performance in the Red Soxs 4-2, World Series-tying victory on Sunday night at Busch Stadium. Hell get it here; a little later on. In the immediate, the focus will be on Jonny Gomes and an unsung hero, Felix Doubront. The Red Sox are two wins away from the franchises third world championship in 10 seasons. This, despite an offensive output offensive to the sensibilities. Boston is hitting a collective .223 in the playoffs. After a solid start against the Rays (38-133 - .286), the Red Sox have been stifled by the Tigers (39-193 - .202) and the Cardinals (24-127 - .189) through four games. There is one offensive area in which the Red Sox are thriving: the timely, usually multi-run home run. This is where Gomes comes in. His three-run, sixth inning blast off Cardinals reliever Seth Maness broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Red Sox the 4-2 lead they wouldnt relinquish. The home run was Gomes first of the postseason. It was Bostons fourth hit of the game. The Sox would finish the night with a total of six hits. Gomes joins David Ortiz (Game 2, ALCS, game-tying grand slam,) Mike Napoli (Game 3, ALCS, solo home run) and Shane Victorino (Game 6, ALCS, go-ahead grand slam) among Red Sox players with big home runs on otherwise dry offensive nights this fall. Funny thing, Gomes wasnt supposed to start. He was a late addition to the starting lineup when Victorino went down with lower-back pain. "I was notified about halfway through batting practice," said Gomes. "Like I said earlier, its all I fought for this year; just the opportunity. So when my number is called, Im stepping up. Im not dodging any situation. Obviously a little different pregame than playing and not playing so I kind of got changed real quick." Doubront, a 26-year-old left-hander who won 11 games for a second-straight regular season, authored 2 2/3 innings of one run, one hit ball in relief of Clay Buchholz, who was removed for a pinch hitter in the fifth. To be clear, Doubront was dominant. He exited in the seventh after allowing a two out double and was tagged with a run when Craig Breslow, whos had a bad series, coughed up a single to the first hitter he faced. https://www.chinacheapjerseys.net/peter-shorts-jersey-store/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Peter Shorts Jersey Store. Doubront threw 32 pitches, all the more impressive considering hed thrown two scoreless innings on 25 pitches the night before. Remember, hes accustomed to starting. Pitch, rest and prepare for four days and then pitch again. The routine is different and requires mental and physical adjustments. His performance gave Gomes the opportunity to be the offensive hero. "I was pretty much focused," said Doubront. "And when I got my time, when I got that opportunity to go up there and do my job - you know, as a reliever - now I was feeling pretty good. And like I say, focus and try to get serious and give my teammates the opportunity to score more runs and win the game." Meantime, Ortiz, after struggling to just two hits in the ALCS (yes, one of them was that important grand slam) is suddenly red hot and should Boston win the series, would cement his status as one of the greatest Red Sox of all time. Ortiz had three hits and a walk in four plate appearances and scored two runs. Hes 8-12 (.667) and has drawn four walks in the World Series. In 16 plate appearances, hes been on base 12 times. He was seen in the dugout giving a rah-rah speech to teammates before the start of the sixth inning, at the time the game was tied 1-1, and while its foolish to believe the talk propelled Gomes home run ball over the fence, it offered insight into his willingness to allow his mouth, along with his play, to do the talking. "Through five innings we got two hits and hes got both of them," said Red Sox manager John Farrell. "His career states what hes done. Hes a tremendous hitter at any point in time in the year. Playing first base has certainly not affected it in any way. Hell be back in there (Monday) at first." With the victory, the Red Sox assured this series returns to Fenway Park and perhaps more importantly, returns to American League rules. The Cardinals will have to beat a Boston lineup that will include Ortiz and Mike Napoli, not one or the other. Were down to a best of three. ' ' '

Carbondale, IL (SportsNetwork. Peter Moylan Jersey .com) - The 18th-ranked Northern Iowa Panthers head to SIU Arena on Wednesday night to battle the Southern Illinois Salukis in Missouri Valley Conference action. The Panthers, who trail only Wichita State in the league standings, have an identical overall record as the Shockers at 18-2. The team has won seven straight outings and nine of the last 10, resulting in a 7-1 mark in the MVC. Over the weekend, the Panthers were taken down to the wire in a 54-53 win at Illinois State. The Salukis, who are 10-14 all-time at home versus nationally-ranked foes, are three games under .500 on the campaign and have posted only two wins in eight league bouts. The team recently snapped a seven-game slide with consecutive triumphs over Loyola and Bradley, but last Saturday the Salukis landed right back in the loss column with a 75-66 setback at Evansville. The Panthers won the first meeting of the season versus SIU three weeks ago, 55-39. As a result, the all-time series now favors the Salukis by a 31-25 margin, although UNI has captured 11 of the last 15 encounters. In a game that featured nine ties and seven lead changes, the Panthers bounced back from a 12-point deficit midway through the second half in order to pull out the narrow victory at Illinois State. Seth Tuttle was the top performer on both sides as he recorded a double-double consisting of 21 points and 10 rebounds, but the team nearly let one get away as they finished with almost as many turnovers (16) as field goals (1. It also didnt help that Northern Iowa was limited to just five offensive rebounds. The weak effort on the offensive glass was somewhat surprising, given that just two games earlier the Panthers had registered a season-best 18 versus Missouri State at home. Then again, the Panthers did experience one game, against Denver, in which they were credited with only one rebound on offense. In conference play, Tuttle paces the program both in the scoring department and on the boards with averages of 17.1 points and 7.1 rebounds per contest. But more than that, Tuttle is also tops with 24 assists in those games as well, helping to give the Panthers a scoring advantage of 9.8 ppg. Allowing Evansville to make good on not only 61.1 percent from the floor in the first half but also 5-of-7 behind the 3-point line, the Salukis fell behind by 15 at the break and never recovered at the Ford Center. Anthony Beane tried to give the visitors a fighting chance with his 19 points, connecting on all eight of his free-throw tries, but he shot just 5-of-18 from the floor otherwise. Jordan Carolina pitched in with another 15 points as he made all but one of his six shots from the field. Over the course of eight conference outings, the Salukis are struggling to make ends meet on offense, producing only 54.9 ppg while connecting on an awful 27.3 percent on the outside. Beane may be the only double-digit scorer to turn to with his 12.6 ppg, but he is also part of the larger problem with just 6-of-35 (.171) accuracy beyond the arc and 31.1 percent shooting from the floor overall. A. J. Minter Jersey . Certainly not Monday night. George Hill took care of the early work, scoring a season-high 26 points, and Paul George closed it out by scoring 11 of his 26 points during a decisive second-half stretch that finally allowed Indiana to pull away from Minnesota 98-84 for yet another win. After the best regular season in franchise history, the Ducks have lost four of their past six playoff games heading into a critical Game 3 at Los Angeles on Thursday night. Its barely a slump, and it includes a near-victory that got away with 7 seconds left in regulation in the second-round opener. Yet the Ducks realize what hangs on their latest trip to Staples Center, and theyre comfortable with the risk. "The belief and the confidence in this group is pretty high," Anaheim defenceman Cam Fowler said. "We know that a lot of people are counting us out right now, but that only fuels us." During their best stretches of that remarkable regular season, the Ducks were a dominant offensive team, finishing second in the NHL with 266 goals. With Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry leading the way, Anaheim got consistent scoring from all four lines and methodically broke down almost any defensive team -- including the Kings, who beat the Ducks just once in five tries during the regular season. In the playoffs, Anaheim has managed just three goals against Jonathan Quick in two home losses. The Kings puck-possession style and mistake-free play in their own end are remarkable at times, and even the Ducks appreciated it while spending the past two days figuring out ways to counter it. "They certainly know how to win," Fowler said. "Their style translates well to playoff hockey. Very structured, no mistakes, and make the other team beat you. "Theyve done it before, and when Quick starts playing like he is now, thats when they become a hard team to beat. Theyre certainly peaking at the right time, and we know what were up against, but we have a belief in our group that we can do it." The Ducks have made some unique travel arrangements for the nominal roadd portion of this series. Mike Lum Jersey. After Wednesdays practice, they took a bus to a hotel across the street from Staples Center. Theyre staying downtown until Game 4 on Saturday, but theyll also take the bus back to Anaheim for practice on Friday. With just three goals in more than six playoff periods against the Kings, Anaheim might attempt to boost its offence by putting Kyle Palmieri back into the lineup. The goal-scoring wing, a healthy scratch in the Ducks past four games, skated alongside Nick Bonino and Devante Smith-Pelly at practice Wednesday. Palmieri scored a career-best 14 goals in the regular season, and he had five points in last seasons first-round series loss to Detroit. The Kings are up 2-0 in a playoff series for the sixth time in the past three seasons, reaching that mark as the road team an incredible five times. They led all four series 3-0 despite opening on the road each time during their 2012 rampage through the post-season to their first Stanley Cup title. The Kings also were down 0-3 in the first round last month against San Jose, which means they realize theyre only nominally in control of this series. "A 2-0 lead is great, but its not four. We know that better than anybody," Kings centre Jarret Stoll said. "Theyve outchanced us. Theyve beaten us in a lot of areas we need to be better at." The Kings are likely to be without injured defencemen Willie Mitchell and Robyn Regehr again in Game 3, but Matt Greene and Jeff Schultz have filled in splendidly so far. Even with Quick on top of his game, the Ducks are confident they can get back in the series by getting more pucks past him. They hope to have the support of travelling Anaheim fans after the Kings had a boisterous cheering section at Honda Center, too. "We played pretty well in the first two games, and we remind ourselves of that," Anaheim goalie Jonas Hiller said. "I dont think many things need to change. We just need to keep our confidence." PITTSBURGH, Pa. Clay Matthews Super Bowl Jersey . - On a defence in the middle of a generational shift, Lawrence Timmons is the constant. The faces that mentored the Pittsburgh Steelers inside linebacker when he broke into the NFL in 2007 are gone. James Farrior and Larry Foote have been replaced by youngsters Ryan Shazier, Sean Spence and Vince Williams. Now its Timmons who is among the elder statesmen in the meeting room. It is Timmons who is making the defensive calls. It is Timmons who is serving as 6 feet, 1 inch and 234 pounds of duct tape, going wherever is required to fix whatever problem arises. And it is Timmons — at last — who has finally filled the one gaping hole on his resume: Pro Bowler. The 28-year-old earned his first invitation to Hawaii on Wednesday, eight seasons into a steadily spectacular career that is no longer being taken for granted. From Day 1, LT has always worked hard, and you appreciate it, Steelers defensive end Cam Heyward said. And you want someone like that to be rewarded for it. And we were all happy to see Lawrence make it. There are a lot of good linebackers in this league right now, but LT has been one of the centre guys for a long time right now. So, it was long overdue. So much so that Hall of Fame defensive co-ordinator Dick LeBeau long ago developed a stump speech for Timmons, who leads the Steelers (10-5) with a team-high 121 tackles to go with two sacks and an endless stream of quietly sublime plays where his ability to do his job has freed his teammates up to do theirs. In my opinion, he can get out on the field with anybody in the National Football League and play well, LeBeau said. And I think thats what an All-Pro is, and Ive said that repeatedly.Even if Timmons rarely says anything at all. There is a thankless quality that comes with playing inside linebacker for the Steelers, where the outside LBs are the ones who rack up the game-turning sacks and serve as the de facto intimidators, a lineage that stretches from James Harrison to Joey Porter to Greg Lloyd to Jack Ham.Timmons main responsibility is to chase down running backs or drop into coverage. Only occasionally does LeBeau allow Timmons to unleash his freakish speed on a dead sprint to the backfield. Yet theres little doubt Timmons could be among the best pass rushers in the league if let loose. Hes shown flashes while filling in on the outside at times the last few years because of injury, though its always back to the inside whenever there are enough healthy bodies around him.He just does whatever we ask him to do, even though that inside backer position was probably his best position the year that we were strapped outside with some injuries, and he went and played great outside, LeBeau said. While Pittsburghs defence is no longer the force it was a few years ago, the Steelers have improved steadily against the run since early in the season. They are one of six teams to allow fewer than 100 yards rushing on average and are 6-0 in their last six games when opponents fail to reach 100 yards on the ground. The improvement has as much to do with Timmons role in helping the young guys around him figure out what theyre supposed to be doing as it does his textbook tackling. Consider the next four inside linebackers behind Timmons on the depth chart — Shazier, Williams, Spence and Arthur Moats — began the season with five years of NFL experience combined.Hes somebody you turn to, said Spence, who is playing regularly for the first time after missing 2012 and 2013 with a devastating knee injury. Hes so productive and he knows whats expected here. You ask him a question and he always knows the answer. And he knows how to prioritize. In typical fashion, he downplayed the biggest individual achievement of his career. And given a choice, Timmons hopes hes busy playing for a seventh Steelers title instead of hanging out in paradise.Ill take the Super Bowl, Timmons said with a smile.___Freelance writer Dale Grdnic in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.___AP NFL websites: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Darnell Savage Jr. Super Bowl Jersey . CHICAGO -- This time, the Chicago Cubs were shut down by Mat Latos. Starlin Castro had an RBI single for Chicagos only run in a 4-1 loss to Latos and the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday night. The Cubs began the day with a .232 team batting average, which was next to last in the National League. They managed just six hits in the series finale against Cincinnati. "The story for us has been that were not scoring enough runs for the starting pitchers and for this bullpen," catcher John Baker said. "Its frustrating for us position players." Its also frustrating for first-year manager Rick Renteria. "Theyre all chipping away at their approaches, but were facing some pretty good chuckers too," he said. "We just obviously werent able to generate a whole lot of runs." Edwin Jackson (5- allowed four runs and six hits in 5 1-3 innings for Chicago, which has dropped four of five. Starlin Castro had two hits and drove in a run. "Its a tough lineup. Theyre going to make you work," Jackson said. "I thought for the most part I was able to contain them until the sixth inning. They kind of busted it open a little bit." With the wind blowing in on a cold summer night, Devin Mesoracos five-game homer streak came to an end. The Reds catcher was tied with Adam Dunn, Ken Griffey Jr., Johnny Bench, George Crowe and Ted Kluszewski for the franchise record. Latos (1-0) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings in his third start after beginning the season on the disabled list. It was his first win since Sept. 2 against St. Louis. Latos was coming off a frustrating no-decision against Toronto, when he was staked to an 8-0 lead and was unable to hold on. He gave up five runs and nine hits in 5 2-3 innings as the Blue Jays rallied for a 14-9 victory Friday night. Thee Cubs fell to 12-31 against Cincinnati over the last three seasons. Todd Frazier scored from first on Joey Vottos opposite-field double to left. After Mesoracos single, Jay Bruce lined a double off third baseman Luis Valbuenas glove to drive in Votto. Jackson struck out Chris Heisey before James Russell came in, and Skip Schumaker executed a perfect suicide squeeze to give the Reds a 4-1 lead. "It was the first one in my life. College, big leagues, you name it," said Schumaker, who also had two doubles in the game. "I saw the sign. It worked out." Bruce put the Reds in front with a two-out double down the right-field line in the first, scoring Frazier from second. Votto tried to hustle home from first but was cut down at the plate on Darwin Barneys relay throw. The Cubs tied it in the fourth. LOS ANGELES, Calif. Joe Montana Super Bowl Jersey . - Anthony Davis is just scratching the surface, and New Orleans Pelicans coach Monty Williams is itching to see how much more the third-year forward can accomplish this season.Davis scored eight of his 23 points in the final 6 minutes of the fourth quarter, Jrue Holiday had 22 points and eight assists, and the Pelicans beat the Los Angeles Lakers 104-87 on Sunday night.Hes just special. Nothing fazes him, Williams said. He had a subpar game for him last night — and I say that jokingly when you look at his numbers. But he didnt play as well as he can play. So for him to come back and close out this game the way that he did — I mean, hes just 21 years old. And when hes 23 to 27, were going to see something the league has never seen.Ryan Anderson had 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, helping the Pelicans end a four-game road losing streak that included a 27-point drubbing by the Warriors on Thursday and a 20-point loss to the Clippers on Saturday night. We shared the ball, played for each other, defended and played together, Davis said. We bounced back after two bad losses. To hold a team like that to 87 points and play our style of ball was good for us.Kobe Bryant had 14 points in 31 minutes for the Lakers (5-16). He and Davis entered Sunday 1-2 in the league in scoring average at 25.8 points and 25.3, respectively.Reserve Gal Mekel, playing his second game with the Pelicans, gave them their biggest lead at 83-59 on a fast-break layup 46 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Lakers closed to 83-71 with a 12-0 run.But that was as close as they got, as Davis helped put it away with two layups, a dunk and a 21-footer that gave New Orleans a 100-81 cushion with 2:54 left. With his team allowing an average of 111.2 points entering Sunday, first-year Lakers coach Byron Scott inserted power forward Ed Davis and point guard Ronnie Price into his starting unit while Carlos Boozer and Jeremy Lin came off the bench. If you look at our record, we have to make changes — at least think I do, Scott said. As a coach, Im not going to stand pat and just watch it continue to be played this way. So to me, it was a no-brainer. The reason is obviously on the defensive end. The last five games Ive been thinking about this. That ended Boozers streak of 588 straight games as a starter. The 13-year veteran and two-time All-Star had 12 points and six rebounds over 23 minutes in his first game as a reserve since March 14, 2006, with Utah at Miami.Holidays 12 points paced New Orleans to a 50-40 halftime lead.Nick Young, who was so upset following the Lakers 113-96 loss at Boston on Friday night that he walked away from a TV interview at his locker after just 15 seconds, missed his first six shots against the Pelicans before hitting a 3-pointer that trimmed the Lakers deficit to 63-57 with 4:28 left in the third.TIP-INSPelicans: Anthony Davis scored 25 points against the Lakers on Nov. 12 in a 109-102 victory at New Orleans. Justin Upton had two hits and three RBIs, and the Atlanta Braves were helped by two straight Ryan Howard errors in a 10-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in the first game of a day-night doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. Tommy La Stella hit a three-run triple and Chris Johnson drove in two runs for the Braves, who have won four of five. Atlanta trailed 2-0 before tying it in the fourth on two unearned runs. "You make an error and give teams extra opportunities, and sometimes theyll make you pay for it," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We only got two runs out of those errors, but it got us back in the game. You have to take advantage of those. If you give opportunities to good baseball teams, theyre going to get you." Tony Gwynn Jr. and Ben Revere had a pair of hits for the slumping Phillies, who have lost six of eight. Philadelphia scored three runs or less for the 40th time, dropping to 7-33 in those contests. The Phillies also fell to 18-25 at hitter-friendly Citizens Bank Park, where they entered Saturday batting .229 as a team. While the offence didnt shine, it was the defence that really let Philadelphia down this time. Howard made two costly errors in the fourth inning, resulting in two unearned runs that allowed the Braves to tie the game at 2. Freddie Freemans hard-hit grounder went through Howards legs and the error put runners on second and third. "It was a possible double-play ball and we wouldve been out of the inning," Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said. "It changed the whole game." The next batter, Upton, hit a medium grounder to first but reached safely when Howard bobbled and then lost control of the ball. Simmons scored on that error and Freeman, who went to third on the play, then reached on Jason Heywards groundout to first. Fans gave a sarcastic cheer when Howard made the putout of Heyward. "We have to tighten up on the defensive end," Sandberg said. Atlanta then went ahead in the sixth on Uptons two-run double off the wall in left. The teams were scheduled to play the nightcap at 7:15, with Atlanta right-hander David Hale (3-2, 2.72) facing Phillies right-hander Sean OSullivan, who is making his 2014 debut after being called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley for the spot start. Ervin Santana (6-5) snapped a four-game winless streak after allowing two runs on seven hiits with five strikeouts and one walk in 6 2/3 innings. Y.A. Tittle Super Bowl Jersey. Santana had lost his last three starts with a 5.89 ERA in those outings. But he was strong after the first two innings against the Phillies, retiring nine straight during one stretch and surrendering just three hits after the second inning. "It was a great effort," Gonzalez said. "We were looking for that kind of outing to be able to save the bullpen." Said Santana, "In the first inning, a couple pitches were up. After that, I just made a good adjustment and kept the ball down for the most part." Roberto Hernandez (3-7) didnt allow a hit through 3 1-3 innings and ended up giving up just three hits in seven innings with two strikeouts and three walks. Two of the four runs he allowed were unearned. "His pitching was better than his line," Sandberg said. "The defence let him down in the fourth inning, but he hung in there and pitched pretty well." The Braves broke the game open in the eighth when they scored five runs off Antonio Bastardo, snapping an 11 1-3 inning scoreless streak for the Philadelphia bullpen. La Stella had the big blow, a bases-clearing triple that pushed the Atlanta lead to 8-2. It was the first career triple for the rookie La Stella, who had two hits in his last 30 at-bats prior to the hit. The Phillies jumped in front 2-0. Gwynn Jr. snapped an 0-for-23 skid by tripling with one out in the first and scored on Howards single to left. It was Gwynns first hit since the June 16 death of his Hall of Fame father. Hernandez helped himself in the second inning when he recorded his first career RBI by singling home Koyie Hill. Notes: Hill, a catcher, was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley Friday after Carlos Ruiz was placed on the 7-day DL with concussion-like symptoms. Philadelphias regular backup catcher, Will Nieves, has been on the DL since June 19 with a right quad strain. . Atlanta C Evan Gattis, who left due to back spasms after striking out in the first inning on Friday night, didnt play. His replacement, Gerald Laird, went 0-for-3. . Philadelphia Flyers goalie Steve Mason, in town for the NHL Draft at the Wells Fargo Center Friday and Saturday, was in attendance. . Following the second game of Saturdays doubleheader, the Phillies and Braves will conclude their four-game series at 1:35 Sunday afternoon with Atlanta RHP Aaron Harang (6-6, 3.7 facing Philadelphia RHP David Buchanan (4-3, 4.79). ATLANTA -- The Braves purchased right-hander Freddy Garcia from the Baltimore Orioles on Friday, a move that could ultimately provide depth for a team that holds a commanding lead in the NL East. https://www.wholesalejerseysaaa.com/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Cheap Jerseys . The 36-year-old Garcia was 3-5 with a 5.77 ERA in 11 appearances for the Orioles before being assigned to Triple-A Norfolk in late June. He made 13 starts for the Tides, going 8-3 with a 2.84 ERA. The Braves placed Garcia with their Triple-A team at Gwinnett, though he could be recalled when the rosters expand for the final month of the season. Garcia probably wasnt going to be recalled by the Orioles in September, so they sent him to a place where he had a shot at playing in the majors. "It was an ethical thing as much as it was an evaluation," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said before the Orioles faced Oakland at Camden Yards. "Freddys going to be in the big leagues for them, and we werent sure if thats where we were going to go in September for sure. I think he deserved that opportunity. "Now, if were playing the Braves in the World Series and hes sticking it to us, well probably regret it. But in the long run, this is whats best for Freddy and his career." ST. Custom Derek Jeter Jersey . PAUL, Minn. -- Zach Parise and the Minnesota Wild kept their chins up and turned what could have been a negative outcome into a positive. Parise and Jason Pominville scored in the shootout, lifting Minnesota to a 2-1 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday night. Parise tied the game late in the third period for Minnesota, which has won five of six and is 8-1-2 in its last 11. The Wild have been involved in three straight shootouts -- winning two. In the shootout, Parise beat Jonathan Bernier low on the left side before Josh Harding stopped Raymond. Mikko Koivu was stopped by Bernier and Phil Kessel lost control of the puck before Pominville beat Bernier through the pads for the win. "We had little bit more of a feeling that this game was there for us if we could keep going," Minnesota coach Mike Yeo said. Parise tied it with 4:17 to play in regulation when, after a turnover by Kessel, Charlie Coyles shot from low on the right side deflected off Parises skate and into the net. The goal came 2 minutes after the Wild managed to get one shot on a 5-minute power-play after Nazem Kadri was assessed a match penalty for hitting Mikael Granlund in the head. "He made initial contact with the shoulder and the kid had his head down, he didnt have his arms up, he ran into the player, Granlund snapped his head back and obviously, the referee saw it differently, and obviously, with a five-minute match penalty, itll be reviewed," said Toronto coach Randy Carlyle. However, Minnesota heard plenty of boos from the crowd as it got off just one shot during the man-advantage. "Even the guys that were power-play guys were coming back saying, Cmon, we still got lots of time, talking, saying the right things and these are the leaders of your team," Yeo said. "Ive been part of many games where you have something like that and frustration creeps in and its real easy to have some type of letdown or start to deviate or get away from staying with it, trusting it, and they didnt." The hit on Granlund was Kadris second action for which he will likely be hearing from the league. Kadri was not made available to the media. Minnesotas starting goaltender, Niklas Backstrom, was run over by Kadri 7 minutes into the game, and lay flat on the ice for about 30 seconds before slowly sitting up. Kadris elbow appeared to hit Backstrom in the head. Yeo said Backstrom has an upper-body injury. Backstrom, starting for the first time since Oct. 28, stayed in the game until a stoppage with 10:31 left in the period before skating to the bench and heading to the dressing room. He had three saves. "Thatll be interesting to see what happens there because it looks like he got him right in the head," Parise said. "Thats what were trying to get rid of. Itll be interesting to see what they decide." Mason Raymond scored a power-play goal for Toronto, which has scored just three regulation goals in its last four outings. Jonathan Bernier had 33 saves. Toronto nearly won it late in overtime, but Harding got a right pad on a tip by Morgan Rielly and then reached back to grab the puck just outside the goal line. "Theyre a good team in their building and at least we came up with one point. Weve just got to move on," Bernier said. Harding had 19 saves in relief of Backstrom. He started the past five games and was to be given the night off due to sickness. Instead, he increased his save percentage to .947, second-best on the NHL, while lowering his league-best goals-against average to 1.21. There wasnt much he could do as Raymond gave the Maple Leafs a 1-0 lead at 7:32 of the second period, when he gathered a loose puck that hit traffic in front and tucked it behind a sprawled Harding. It was just Torontos second power-play goal in 16 chances over six games. Minnesota had two power plays early in the third period, but came no closer than Koivu hitting the crossbar. ATLANTA - The Atlanta Braves and shortstop Andrelton Simmons agreed on a $58 million, seven-year contract on Thursday, a record deal for the latest young star locked up by the NL East champions. https://www.cheapstarsonline.com/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Stars Jerseys 2020 . The deal, which runs through the 2020 season, is the largest ever awarded to a player subject to American draft rules with less than two years of service time. Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo signed a $41 million, seven-year contract last May. Simmons, 24, showed power potential in 2013, when he hit 17 home runs, but he earned the big contract with his defence. He won his first Gold Glove award in 2013, when he led the major leagues with 499 assists. "We feel that Andrelton is one of the premier shortstops in the game today, and we are happy that we were able to agree on this multiyear contract," general manager Frank Wren said in a statement released by the team. The Braves this month also reached multiyear agreements with first baseman Freddie Freeman, outfielder Jason Heyward, closer Craig Kimbrel and right-hander Julio Teheran, committing $280.7 million to the rising stars, including Simmons. Simmons hit .248 and drove in 59 runs last season. He earned the new contract after playing in only 206 career games. Simmons received a $1 million signing bonus and will earn $1 million this season. He will earn $3 million in 2015, $6 million in 2016, $8 million in 2017, $11 million in 2018, $13 million in 2019 and $15 million in 2020. It has been a busy month for the Braves and Wren. On Sunday, the team agreed to a $42 million, four-year contract with Kimbrel, 25, the All-Star closer. That came two days after the 23-year-old Teheran agreed to terms on a six-year, $32.4 million deal. Earlier this month, the Braves announced multiyear deals with a pair of 24-year-old hitters — Freeman and Heyward. Freeman, the All-Star first baseman, agreed to the biggest contract in Braves history — $135 million for eight years. Of all the new deals, only Heywards is for fewer than four years. Heyward, the outfielder who won his first Gold Glove in 2012, signed for two years and $13.3 million. Even management has been included in the wave of new deals. Chipper Jones retired after the 2012 season, and Tim Hudson and catcher Brian McCann departed as free agents after last season, leaving the team that won 96 games last year with a young roster. Simmons hit only .216 against left-handers last season, and he hit only .219 in 283 at-bats as a leadoff hitter. SANTA CLARA, Calif. Elgton Jenkins Super Bowl Jersey . -- The start of the San Francisco 49ers three-day mandatory minicamp was overshadowed by the players who were absent. Two-time Pro Bowl tight end Vernon Davis and right guard Alex Boone skipped Tuesdays activities. Both starters are seeking raises despite two years left on their contracts. Cornerback Eric Wright, a seven-year veteran who played in seven games for the 49ers last season, announced his retirement. Wright said in a statement released through the team that he "no longer had the same passion" for the game. While Wrights announcement came as a surprise in the locker room, Davis and Boone are far bigger contributors to a 49ers team that has Super Bowl aspirations. Coach Jim Harbaugh said he appreciates players who show up for the voluntary workouts in the off-season but expects everybody in attendance for the mandatory meetings. He said he was disappointed that Davis and Boone are not at the minicamp. "Not the decision that I envisioned being the 49er way," Harbaugh said. "Really nothing more to be said about it. The focus will be on whats going on here." Players can be fined nearly $70,000 if they miss all three days of the minicamp, per the NFLs collective bargaining agreement. If Davis and Boone continue to hold out, they set the stage for what could be a major distraction leading into training camp next month for a franchise that has avoided such contract disputes the past few seasons under Harbaugh and general manager Trent Baalke. Neither Davis nor Boone was present during the first eight weeks of the teams voluntary program. Davis sacrificed a $200,000 bonus and Boone $50,000 for missing the workouts. And while both are seeking new deals, Davis has been the most vocal about his situation. "In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history. Four years later, and Im playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why Im holding out," Davis wrote in a guest column for MMQB.com on Monday. "Its all about getting paid what you deserve. Its not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working toward that goal, but I have to worry about my future first." "Most of my teammates and many players in the NFL understand that. A few dont," Davis continued. "Behind closed doors, theyll say theyre all about the team and would run through a brick wall for the organization. But when you look closer, theyre doing things to contradict themselves. I cant listen to anyone but my family and my advisors, because those are the people who are going to be there when football inevitably dumps me." Davis, who initially acted coy about skipping the teams voluntary off-season program, began making his displeasure known shortly before the 49ers announced they had given quarterback Colin Kaepernick a six-year contract extension through the 2020 season that could be worth up to $126 million. Davis, who is now 30 years old, had 52 catches for 850 yards and accounted for 13 of Kaepernicks 21 touchdown passes last season. The tight end has repeatedly talked about marketing his "brand" this off-season after signing a deal with Fantex, which sells shares of Davis "stock" to investors. The San Francisco company paid Davis $4 million in return for 10 per cent of his future earnings from football, commercial endorsements and other jobs that he may get during the remainder of his life. The 27-year-old Boone signed a contract extension while he was a backup tackle in November 2011. He has two years remaining on the deal, which will reportedly pay him $2.25 million this season and $1.45 million next season. Most of their teammates responded in similar fashion when asked about their absences -- saying its a decision each player has to make on their own. Second-year safety Eric Reid, whose locker is next to Wrights, said it was a little surprising when he heard Wright was considering not playing anymore. Wright had been competing for the job vacated by former starters Carlos Rogers and Tarell Brown, who both signed with the Oakland Raiders in free agency. The 49ers are treating minicamp as an opportunity for others to make an impact. Vance McDonald and Garrett Celek are expected to receive most of the practice repetitions behind Davis at tight end. Joe Looney is competing at the guard spot, while tackle Jonathan Martin is receiving some time at guard. Daniel Kilgore also can play centre and guard. Tramaine Brock, Chris Culliver, Perrish Cox, Chris Cook, Darryl Morris and rookies Dontae Johnson and Kenneth Acker are competing at cornerback. "Its next man up," 49ers offensive co-ordinator Greg Roman said. "Thats how it goes." Josh Jackson Super Bowl Jersey . Three pitches later, he was hugging Mike Napoli at home plate after his teammates winning home run. Napoli and Ortiz hit consecutive homers with one out in the 10th inning and the Boston Red Sox rallied past Minnesota 2-1 Wednesday, sending the Twins to their fifth straight loss. Watch the 2014 NBA Draft on TSN, Thursday at 7pm et/4pm pt.DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Top-ranked Serena Williams had little trouble joining sister Venus, in the Dubai Championships semifinals on Thursday. Serena, playing her first tournament since a fourth-round loss at the Australian Open, had little trouble bypassing fifth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. The only blip in Williams game came when she lost serve in a tentatively played fifth game in the first set. "She was the better player tonight," Jankovic said. "Way better. "I just played a bad match on my terms." The only drama in the 76-minute match came in the final game with Jankovic serving. The umpire, Kader Nouni of France, told Jankovic she was serving too fast and then too slow, when taking more than the 25 seconds allotted. Williams was briefly brought into the fray when Jankovic made note that Williams often took more than the 25 seconds allowed to serve. After the match, the players conversed at the net and both reported they left the court on good terms. "I told her at the end, Look, I didnt mean anything. Im sorry if I played slow," Williams said. "She was like, No, it was more like they say (I) play too fast and then too slow. She said she couldnt get it right. "I was like, Look, are we cool because Im cool with you?" In that final game, Jankovic initially rebounded from love-40 before Williams won on a fourth match point with a scorching forehand passing shot. Williams will play Alize Cornet of France in the semmifinals. Corey Linsley Super Bowl Jersey. Cornet scored a 7-5, 6-3 win over Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain. Venus Williams reached her fourth Dubai semifinal with a 6-3, 7-5 win over qualifier Flavia Pennetta of Italy. Williams, who won this title in 2009 and 2010, had to serve for the match twice in the second set. "She just keeps fighting," Williams said of Pennetta. "She stays relevant. Thats what she does really well. I have to give her credit for that." Serving at 5-4 in the second set, Williams missed out on a match point when Pennetta hit a forehand crosscourt winner to bring the score to deuce. Four points later and Pennetta broke serve to even the score at 5-5. After Pennetta dropped serve in the 11th game Williams had a second chance to close out the match. Initially, Williams fell behind 0-40. On a second match point Pennetta popped a return long to concede the win. Williams will play eighth-seeded Caroline Wozniacki, the 2011 Dubai champion, in Fridays semifinals. Wozniacki had little trouble dispatching 27th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-1, 6-2. "That was really pleasing, and I always know that Sorana can be a tricky opponent," Wozniacki said. "I felt like I served well and I put the pressure on her and played the way I wanted to play today." Although not guaranteed, Venus Williams wasnt opposed to thinking ahead to the possibility of an all-Williams final on Saturday. "It would be fantastic," Venus said. "But we both have to get there." Richard Miller RM 052 watch

Aesthetically, the Richard Mille RM 052 replica looks very similar to its predecessor, but with two major differences. First, you'll notice that the unique tonneau-shaped case is no longer hollow. This is because unlike the Richard Mille RM 052 replica, the case of the new model is actually a mixture of TZP and carbon nanotubes. According to the brand, TZP has been used on the bezel and caseback and is made of 95% yttrium-stabilized zirconium. It is a highly scratch-resistant, low-density material (6g / cm3) and has a low thermal conductivity, which means that the bezel and bottom cover can be micro-blasted, and the corners are manually polished for perfection. Its Judgement Night on Thursday which means only one player out of struggling trio Michael Smith, Dave Chisnall and Robert Thornton will survive. https://www.cheapredwings.com/" class="TyTxtSmlC">Detroit Red Wings Store . Sky Live: PL Darts Your one-stop preview to Judgement Night And while two men will crash out of the Premier League, another battle resumes at the top of the table. Michael van Gerwen is playing Raymond van Barneveld in a mouth-watering all-Dutch dust-up - and Wayne has got some brave things to say about that match!Without further ado, heres Mardles predictions... James Wade v Gary AndersonWayne said: This isnt a tough one to call! Anderson is playing beautifully. Hes up there with Taylor and Van Gerwen - theyre the best three players in the world by some way. Theyre the most consistent. When they have a chance to win, they win. I cant believe Im saying this about Anderson who found a way to lose for 15 years! Gary Anderson made it six wins in a row in the Premier League after beating Dave Chisnall Wade is coming in untested [after a weeks break], players have gained on him. It happened to us, back in the day. I was usually bottom and youd leave one point adrift, then come back two weeks later three points adrift! You have a week off and cant do anything about it.Prediction: James can beat anyone, we know that, but hell have to score very well. Hes made a living from 101 finishes. Its a tight game but Anderson will win 7-5. (Anderson 9/2 with Sky Bet to win 7-5)Michael Smith v Phil TaylorWayne said: Not making the cut in the Premier League is horrible. Its basically saying that youre in the bottom two over nine weeks. Youve underperformed, youve underachieved, youve not won as many games as you should. Its a slant on your ability, but you cant look at it like that. Phil Taylor hit an impressive 141 checkout during his match with Peter Wright Gary Anderson has finished bottom of the Premier League. But he believed in his ability - Smith is a young man and I hope, if he gets eliminated, that it doesnt dent his confidence.Prediction: I think Taylor wins this game. Smith has to be worried about elimination, its looming large. (Taylor 2/7 with Sky Bet to win)Dave Chisnall v Peter WrightWayne said: Wright will have taken confidence from the fact he played so well at the European Tour event at the weekend. Chizzy played decent enough in it, but hasnt in the Premier League.Chizzys scoring has been fine, but his combination shots have been really poor in some weeks. Hes got to put away the 58 and 64 finishes. Thats what he continues to miss. Will Peter Wright give anybody a kiss? Wright, at the moment, is playing far better and more consistently. Chisnall has to get something from this game otherwise he will be eliminated, but it doesnt help going on first because hell still have uncertainty.Prediction: I think Wright wins this, and I think Chizzy will be hesitant most of the way through. I think Wright wins comfortably, maybe 7-3. (Wright 9/2 with Sky Bet to win 7-3)Robert Thornton v Adrian LewisWayne said: Adrian very, very rarely annihilates people. He does, obviously, but not as often as he should. Hes miles better than his Premier League reads, which is terrible. Things got tight in the final leg of the match between Adrian Lewis and James Wade. Watch what happened here When Lewis plays well he beats people, but he has a struggle winning when hes not on his A-game. Robert will play with more freedom than he has done.Prediction: I fancy the draw. Robert may have nothing to play for because he may already be safe, or hell have to grind it out - he wont mind either way. (Draw 9/2 with Sky Bet)Raymond van Barneveld v Michael van GerwenWayne said: I said last week that Im never, ever going to back against Van Gerwen. Im going to say something now that is contentious, but I dont care! Michaels form has tailed off. I think Michael has reached the point where he finds the game so easy that he is coasting to victory. But when asked a question during a game, hes not always finding an answer. Raymond van Barneveld finished on the bullseye for this superb 161 checkout against Dave Chisnall Last week for instance, he couldnt find the answer against Thornton. You do not want to be playing Barney if youre not on top form. Holland make such a big thing of this match, and I think Michael has trouble beating Taylor and Van Barneveld. They are the two players he struggles against. Why dont the bookmakers learn?Prediction: I think Barney wins this game! Im going for a 7-4 win for Barney. Dwyers goal was the first by a forward in 564 minutes for Sporting (1-1-1), a streak dating to last years Eastern Conference semifinals. San Jose (0-1-1) managed just one shot on goal and Kansas City keeper Eric Kronberg recorded his first shutout of the year. In its first two league games, Sporting had conceded a goal in the 89th minute or later. Dwyers winner came after Steven Lenhart was called for using his hand to swat at the ball in San Joses penalty area. Jon Busch went to his left, but Dwyer put his low shot behind the goalkeeper. Both teams were coming off defeats in Mexico on Wednesday in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League. CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Charlotte Bobcats have relied heavily on Al Jefferson to put them in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race. On Saturday night, they proved they could win without their veteran centre having a big night. "It shows that we have other guys that can step up," point guard Kemba Walker said. With Jefferson double-teamed most of the night, Walker elevated his game, pouring in 31 points to help the Bobcats defeat the Memphis Grizzlies 92-89 for their fourth win in five nights. Charlotte is 4-0 since the All-Star break, marking its longest winning streak since March 2011. The Bobcats won despite Jefferson being held to just six points -- tying a season-low -- on 2-of-13 shooting. Jefferson came in having scored 29 or more points in eight of his last 11 games and at least 20 points in 17 of the last 19. The Bobcats used an 18-3 run in the fourth quarter to break open a tight game and then held on down the stretch with Walker making four free throws in the final 25 seconds to snap Memphis four-game win streak. It was the second straight night Walker hit four free throws in the final 30 seconds to seal a victory. "I shoot so many free throws in practice Im just thinking, "Hey, make them," said Walker, who was 10 of 10 from the foul line. Charlotte had lost the second night of a back-to-back eight straight times before winning two this week. "To win four in a row against good teams and to play this well in a game like that that was hard fought, you have to feel good about it," Bobcats coach Steve Clifford said. But now the Bobcats face a four-game stretch against the NBAs four best teams -- San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Miami and Indiana -- with the first three games on the road. The Grizzlies were led by Mike Conley, who had 16 points, but twice missed 3-point attempts when he had a chance to tie the game on Memphis final possession. Marc Gasol had 15 points, and Zac Randolph had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Memphis, which fell two games behind Dallas in the race for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Bobcats trailed 66-64 early in thee fourth quarter when Anthony Tolliver got hot from the outside, igniting an 18-3 run with three 3-pointers to give Charlotte a 13-point lead. Lane Taylor Super Bowl Jersey. Tolliver finished with nine points. The Grizzlies battled back to take the lead when Conley knocked down an 18-footer with 51 seconds left. But Josh McRoberts sank two free throws to put the Bobcats ahead for good with 38 seconds left. Conley missed a jumper on the other end and then fouled Walker as he was heading up the court. Walker made two free throws to push the lead to three with 24 seconds left. Gasol answered with an inside layup, but Walker hit two more free throws with 10.7 seconds left to push the lead back to three. Conley had two open looks in the final 6 seconds, but couldnt connect. "We wanted to win, but the Charlotte Bobcats were the aggressors," Memphis guard Tony Allen said. "They were physical. Coach told us before the game that their talent doesnt jump out at you, but what does is just how hard they play. Theres no excuse because they were the aggressors and they pretty much outworked us tonight." The Grizzlies game plan was to make sure Jefferson didnt beat them, aggressively double-teaming the 6-foot-10, 289-pound centre every time he touched the ball in the low post. They limited Jefferson to four points on 1-of-6 shooting in the first half and held Charlotte to 39 per cent shooting to build a 48-42 halftime lead. "Hes shooting it up and theyre going to him a lot," Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger said. "We just kept staying in front of him and making his shots tough." Jefferson picked up his third foul with 2:52 left in the first half -- a call that didnt sit well with Bobcats coach Steve Clifford, who was slapped with a technical foul for arguing. It was his seventh technical foul of the season. NOTES: Atlanta Falcons running back Steven Jackson and former Carolina Panthers wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad were at the game. ... Memphis had won 16 of its last 20 games coming into Saturday night and three straight against the Bobcats. ... Memphis is 6-5 this season on the second night of a back-to-back. ' ' '

EAST RUTHERFORD, N. Montravius Adams Super Bowl Jersey .J. - Think of the Super Bowl and you think of excess: Big money, big parties, big crowds and an even bigger mess left behind when the circus leaves town. Well, at least the messy part is getting smaller. Beginning in the 1990s, the National Football League has sought to gradually reduce the footprint left behind by the Big Game, and the league is taking steps to make the Feb. 2 Super Bowl at MetLife Stadium the most environmentally friendly yet, from planting trees to offset carbon emissions to composting food waste to using biodiesel to power generators. "We try and stay ahead of the curve," said Jack Groh, a consultant who directs the NFLs environmental programs. "We try and push the envelope every year." Most of the attention focused on this years Super Bowl is, understandably, on the challenges of holding it outdoors in the Northeast for the first time. Another, less-celebrated first: MetLife Stadium will compost food waste on game day, the first time thats happened at a Super Bowl. Its not new for the stadium. Dave Duernberger, MetLife Stadiums vice-president of facilities, said the stadium produced 195 tons of food waste for composting last year, up from 153 tons the year before. Duernberger expects about seven or eight tons to be generated during the Super Bowl, which will go into a giant compactor and then be trucked to a local facility for processing. The end product can be used for landscaping. Another innovation is the use of biodiesel fuel processed from waste cooking oil. According to Groh, a biodiesel mix will be used in generators that will power Super Bowl Boulevard, the 13-block party on Broadway that will feature entertainment and a giant toboggan slide, as well as generators that are augmenting the power supply on the MetLife Stadium grounds. The head of Public Service Electric & Gas, the utility that provides power to the complex, has estimated that it will take about 18 megawatts of electricity to power the entire complex for the game, or what would be needed to power 12,000 homes. Of that, PSE&G president Ralph LaRossa said as much as six megawatts could be provided by the generators. Greening the Super Bowl has been a passion project for Groh, who started out as a journalist before forming an environmental communications firm with his wife. He did his first work for the NFL at the 1994 Super Bowl in Atlanta, at a time when the simple recycling of plastic bottles and cans at stadiums was a significant step forward. He continuously seeks out new ways to wring as much value out of things that normally would be discarded. For example, in the weeks leading up to this years Super Bowl, the NFL sponsored e-waste recycling events in New York and New Jersey that collected 9,000 pounds of old phones, computers and other gadgets, according to Verizon, which partnered in the program. Tens of thousands of trees have been planted in the metropolitan area to offset carbon emissions created by the game, Groh said. After the game, the league will donate several miles of fabric signage to nonprofits or other groups for repurposing. In New Orleans, Groh said, local designers took the fabric and used it to make purses, dresses, shower curtains, beanbag chairs, tote bags and wallets. "Our primary objective is to see that it doesnt go to a landfill," he said. The efforts have drawn a thumbs-up from the New Jersey chapter of the Sierra Club, whose president, Jeff Tittel, called the programs "good for the environment and good for the NFLs image." "The NFL is doing a better job reducing greenhouse gases and offsetting carbon than the state of New Jersey is," said Tittel, a consistent critic of Gov. Chris Christies environmental policies. "Thats the irony, they understand climate change better than our governor does." Kenny Clark Super Bowl Jersey .
