NEW YORK -- If Martin St. Louis wasnt a fan favourite during his first two months with the New York Rangers, he certainly became one during a very emotional weekend. St. Louis came to New York in March in a deal in which popular team captain Ryan Callahan was shipped to Tampa Bay. When he didnt light up the scoreboard right away, the Madison Square Garden crowd was slow to warm to him. That all changed Sunday night. Three days after the sudden death of his mother, St. Louis scored 3:34 in, and the Rangers avoided elimination for the second straight game by beating the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1. Game 7 of the Eastern Conference semifinal series is Tuesday in Pittsburgh. New York advanced in the first round with a Game 7 win over Philadelphia. St. Louis rejoined his teammates for Game 5 in Pittsburgh on Friday, after a quick trip to Montreal to be with his family. That dedication inspired his teammates during a 5-1 win and carried over to Sunday. "Its probably one of the cooler things Ive been a part of in my professional career," said Derek Stepan, who earned the first assist on St. Louis goal. "The emotion on that goal is something that I will never forget." Fans were already chanting "Mar-ty, Mar-ty" on his first shift. The cheers got louder after he scored. St. Louis, the first star of the game, patted his heart when he came out to an ovation from the crowd. "Mothers Day, my dad is here, my sister is here," St. Louis said. "Its been a tough time for my whole family. To be able to get the lead in the first period, it was a good one." But not the prettiest of goals. St. Louis got in good position in front of the net. Stepan swiped at the puck in traffic and knocked it off St. Louis right leg and into the net. "I got a pretty good bounce," St. Louis said. "I know (my mother) helped me through this. Its a great win by the guys." Carl Hagelin pushed the Rangers lead to 2-0 just 2:51 later, and Henrik Lundqvist stopped 36 shots to keep Pittsburgh at bay. Derick Brassard made it 3-1 in the second period. Brandon Sutter scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who got 26 saves from Marc-Andre Fleury. The Penguins, who led the series 3-1, failed in their first attempt to advance to the Eastern Conference finals with a 5-1 home loss on Friday. Now the pressure has shifted to them, and frustration is showing. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby took a penalty at the end of the second period that gave the Rangers a power play to start the third. Several scrums also broke out -- including one after the final buzzer. "With a minute left in the game, emotions run high," Crosby said. "I dont think thats why we lost. We put ourselves in a bad position early. We fought hard and tried to get back, but you cant continue to do that in the playoffs. You cant start like that." The team that has scored first has won every game. Under coach Dan Bylsma, the Penguins are 1-7 at home when having a chance to clinch a series. Overall, the Penguins are 2-6 in Game 7s in Pittsburgh. On the flip side, the Rangers are 9-2 in their past 11 games when facing elimination, dating to Game 6 of the first round in 2012 at Ottawa. New York has never won a series it trailed 3-1 and has never beaten the Penguins in the playoffs. Buoyed by another early lead, the Rangers pressed for more, and got it on Hagelins unassisted goal at 6:25. Hagelins initial shot attempt from the left-wing boards was blocked by defenceman Rob Scuderi. Hagelin got to the loose puck in the centre of the left circle and sent a hard backhand sailing past Fleury for his fourth of the post-season. Bylsma burned his lone timeout to try to calm his team that was being outshot 7-2. Pittsburgh reversed that trend and cut its deficit in half before the end of the first. The Penguins started to gain momentum after they killed a roughing penalty against Jussi Jokinen and then received their first power play after Chris Kreider knocked down Jokinen at the edge of the crease with 8:40 left in the period. New York had built its shots edge to 12-3, but then helped the Penguins make the score 2-1. Sutter flung the puck toward the net, and it appeared to hit Rangers defenceman John Moore and then bounce in off the foot of defenceman Kevin Klein near the left post with 3:04 left. Lundqvist was clearly agitated by the late goal by Pittsburgh, which led 15-14 in shots in the first period. The teams both had chances in the middle period, and neither could connect on a pair of power plays. Pittsburgh twice challenged Lundqvist with short-handed breakaways, and the Rangers had a goal waved off at 5:55 when Kreider was called for goalie interference after he was shoved from behind into Fleury by Kris Letang. The Rangers made it 3-1 with 4:30 remaining in the period -- 25 seconds after Mats Zuccarello finished serving a tripping penalty. Brassard lunged, knocked the puck out of the air, and scored his third goal in two games and fourth in the series. Benoit Pouliot earned an assist, giving the line of Pouliot, Brassard, and Zuccarello 12 goals and 15 assists in 10 games -- regular season and playoffs -- against Pittsburgh. TORONTO -- Terrence Ross seemed a bit taken aback by all the fuss. Although hed just matched a Toronto Raptors record with 51 points, Ross wasnt sure why someone threw him a game ball. With the media crowding around his locker, he noted that New Yorks Carmelo Anthony poured in 62 on Friday night and Oklahomas Kevin Durant had 54 earlier this month. It was left to teammate Greivis Vasquez to offer some perspective, noting that while those veterans may have scored more, Ross had eclipsed the half-century mark in just his second year in the NBA. "You dont think about it once you try winning the game and you do whatever," Ross said after the Raptors fell 126-118 to the Los Angeles Clippers in a highly entertaining game at Air Canada Centre. "You dont really realize what youre doing until its all over. "It would have been better if we had the win but I guess thats just how it goes." Ross nearly doubled his previous career-high of 26 against Portland last season. "My teammates just had confidence in me," Ross said. "Every time I was open they passed it to me, so I just shot it and thats what they want me to. I just kept shooting." Ross was 16-for-29 on the night in field goal attempts, including 10 of 17 from three-point range to match the Raptors single-game point record set by Vince Carter against the Phoenix Suns in 2000. Ross, who got a standing ovation from those remaining amongst the sellout crowd of 19,800 when he went to free-throw line in the final minute, had a chance to break the record but missed a last foul shot. Ross almost single-handedly kept the Raptors in the game after DeMar DeRozan went down with a sprained foot and missed the second half. "Terrance picked it up...and put on a heck of a display," Toronto head coach Dwane Casey said. "Not only did he get 51 points but he had nine rebounds, which was huge." But it wasnt enough against the Clippers (31-15), one of the NBAs elite teams. Jamal Crawford with 37 points and Blake Griffin with 30 led the Clippers, 8-2 in their past 10 games. The loss snapped the Raptors (22-21) two-game winning streak. The game see-sawed back and forth until the fourth quarter, each trip up the court adding to the drama. But after Jonas Valanciunas converted an alley oop from Kyle Lowry to give the Raptors a 107-106 lead with 6:34 to go, the Clippers showed why they are among the leagues best. L.A. had an 11-1 run over the next 2:42 and never looked back. "It was an incredible offensive display on their part," Casey said of the Clippers, who shot 55 per cent on field goals compared to 49 per cent for Toronto. "Its not like our guys werent giving an effort on the defensive end. They made some tough shots." DeRozan, who rolled on his left ankle after being undercut on a jump shot by vilified former Raptor Hedo Turkoglu in the second quarter, said "its a little painful right now" after the game. Casey said X-rays on DeRozans foot proved negative and hell re-evaluated on Sunday. Toronto led 37-36 at the half. L.A. was up 71-65 at the half. It was 93-93 after three quarters. Lowry, who had 11 points and 12 assists, said Ross performance "left me speechless. "Ive seen him shoot the ball before and tonight with DeMar going down he stepped it up and thats what a team does," Lowry said. "Unfortunately, we didnt win tonight." Wholesale MLB Jerseys . He added a two-run homer in the ninth inning off 13-game winner R.A. Dickey, making his first relief appearance since April 2011 to help an overtaxed Mets bullpen. Vancouver, BC (Sports Network) - Ryan Kesler recorded his third career hat trick and Roberto Luongo made 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, as the Vancouver Canucks dominated the Minnesota Wild, 5-0. Mason Raymond had a pair of goals for the Canucks, who bounced back from consecutive defeats to the Oilers. Vancouver, which has already captured the Presidents Trophy, will close out its regular season Saturday at Calgary. I dont like shutouts anyways, theyre overrated, Ive said all year long, Luongo said. Niklas Backstrom stopped 18-of-23 shots for the Wild, who have lost three in a row. Jose Theodore replaced Backstrom in the third period and made five saves. Minnesota plays at Edmonton on Friday before finishing its season Sunday at home against Dallas. Raymonds goal at the 8:12 mark of the first period proved to be all Vancouver needed. After Minnesota turned the puck over at its own blue line, Raymond fired a wrister past Backstrom from the right circle.dddddddddddd Keslers first goal of the night came on the power play with 28 seconds left in the opening stanza. The Canucks built a 3-0 lead at the 7:20 mark of the middle frame. Kesler gathered the puck at center ice and charged down the right side, releasing a shot from the circle that got past Backstrom. Raymond lit the lamp for a second time at the 9:11 mark to give Vancouver a 4-0 margin. Kesler completed his hat trick just 2:18 into the third. DURBAN, South Africa -- A vastly improved South Africa scored in each half to beat Angola 2-0 at the African Cup of Nations on Wednesday, giving the host nation huge relief and reviving Bafana Bafanas chances of making the quarterfinals. Home fans were lifted from near the depths of despair when defender Siyabonga Sangweni netted with a volley from a tight angle in the 30th minute, easing the crushing pressure on coach Gordon Igesund and his team. Substitute Lehlohonolo Majoro then sneaked a shot through Angola goalkeeper Lamas legs in the 62nd for a vital cushion in the Group A game at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Apart from a third-minute scare, when Angolas Mateus Da Costa flashed an early shot at Itumeleng Khunes goal, South Africa had the majority of the play in Durban. "The guys stood up and were counted today, every single one of them," Igesund said. Sangwenis sweet volley after a loose defensive header and Majoros skilful second also allowed South Africa to rid itself of Saturdays awful performance in the tournament opener as Igesund made five changes and went for broke after a nervous and impotent showing at Soccer City. "I told them, if they dont want to believe in themselves, I believe in what theyre doing," Igesund said. "Today I took a big risk. I played with almost five strikers." Initially fearing another depressing performance, home fans ended the game singing and dancing and launched themselves into Mexican waves at the seaside venue. Just four days ago, South Africas lack of attacking intent in its dreadfully limp 0-0 draw with tournament debutant Cape Verde had the country desperately gloomy. Home fans groaned again at the sellout 56,000-seat Moses Mabhida when Da Costa forced Khune to scramble to his right to get a slight deflection on a teasing low shot early on. But after that, South Africa impressed its authority on a disappointing Angola team for much of the remaining 87 minutes -- although Angola coach Gustavo Ferrin had real problems with what he called "poor refereeing." "We knew that it was going to be difficult because of all the pressure behind this game," he said through an interpreter. "I believe that South Africa has got enough capacity to win it (the game) by itself, therefore we dont understand why they had to be pushed." Sangweni connected with a good low volley for the opening goal and first of Group A after a header from Lunguinha sent the ball looping into the air. In the second half, Majoro picked up possession out on the left and jinked his way to the byline, and then back infield to deceive defenders and Lama for the second, allowing South African fans to wildly celebrate. Igesund started with a new striker partnership and two new central midfielders in Durban, including Oldhams Dean Furman, who ran the game in a man-of-the-match performance and nearly scored himself with a low curving shot that Lama just got fingertips to. "We know what the nations expecting," Furman said. "We want to give them a team to be proud of. This is just a start." Recalled centre forward Katlego Mphela troubled Angolas defence for much of the game, allowing Thuso Phala, new striker Tokelo Rantie and Bernard Parker space to threaten regularly. Angolas best chance of the second half came when Da Costa pulled a cross back for Guilherme Afonso in the 52nd but his powerful low shot went straight at Khune. South Africa could have even added a third in a hugely different and far more positive display when Majoro attempted a lob from the edge of the penalty area with a minute to go and it drifted just over the crossbar. "The problem was within us because we were a bit nervous," Angola captain Manucho said. cheap nfl jerseys . -- Alex Anthopoulos spoke volumes with what he didnt say on right-hander Ervin Santana. cheap nfl jerseys from china . McConnells layup attempt with 6 seconds left, sending Arizona State to a 69-66 victory over No. 2 Arizona on Friday night. With both teams struggling offensively most of the night, Arizona State (19-6, 8-4 Pac-12) turned to Marshall when it counted. He went over 20 minutes without a field goal, but hit consecutive 3-pointers and scored on a drive with 14 seconds left to put the Sun Devils up 67-66. McConnell then tried to drive the lane, but Bachynski swatted his shot away, leading to Jahii Carsons breakaway dunk. Arizona States fans rushed the court, had to be cleared because there was 0.8 seconds left, then poured out of the stands again after Nick Johnson missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. McConnell led Arizona (23-2, 10-2) with 17 points and five rebounds. Kaleb Tarczewski had 13 points and 13 rebounds, and Aaron Gordon had 13 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildcats, who shot 35 per cent and went 4 of 14 from 3-point range. Carson finished with 17 points and six assists. Bachynski had 13 points, seven rebounds and blocked eight shots. Arizona turned the first desert rivalry game into a rout, racing away from the Sun Devils for a 91-68 win in Tucson on Jan. 16. A lot has changed in a month. Arizona lost one of its best players in its only loss of the season when forward Brandon Ashley injured his right foot against California two weeks ago. The Wildcats managed to win their first two games without the versatile sophomore, against the two Oregon schools last week, but had to rejigger their lineup to compensate for his abssence.dddddddddddd Arizona State has been on a roll since that loss, winning five of its past six games to get back into the NCAA tournament picture. The Sun Devils also had Marshall, their second-leading scorer, back in the lineup after he missed the first game with a groin injury and Bachynski has been playing better after missing all three of his shots in Tucson. Marshall made a huge difference in the rematch after an ugly start that featured more combined fouls (11) than points (nine) the opening eight minutes. Marshall scored 12 of the Sun Devils 19 points in the first half, hitting 5 of 10 shots while the rest of the team 3 for 17. Arizona led 26-21 at halftime after dominating the glass, outrebounding Arizona State 26-15, including 9-3 on the offensive end. Marshall continued to carry the Sun Devils early in the second half, scoring on a three-point play on a turnaround shot in the lane and earning a chance at another on a hard drive before missing the free throw. Then it was Carsons turn. He had two points on 1-of-5 shooting in the first half, but started to assert himself more midway through the second half, scoring six straight points to put Arizona State up 47-41. Arizona managed to keep the Sun Devils close despite struggling at the free-throw line, but Carson added a step-back jumper and Bachynski hit a free throw to make it 51-46. The Wildcats fought back, though, with Aaron Gordon scoring on a three-point play and McConnell on a breakaway lead layup to tie it at 51-all with 49 seconds left. Both teams had a chance to take the lead at the end of regulation, but got off poor shots to send the game to overtime. ' ' '

SALEM, Ore. -- Conner Mertens didnt want to pretend anymore -- especially with his teammates. So the redshirt freshman kicker at Division III Willamette announced Tuesday that hes bisexual. "It got to a point where I just got tired of it, trying to hide who I was and trying to pretend I was something I was not," he said. Mertens, 19, announced his sexual orientation to his teammates during a meeting on Monday. A story about him appeared on Outsports.com on Tuesday. Speaking on campus later in the afternoon, Mertens said he hopes his announcement helps dispel the stereotypes and stigmas associated with bisexual athletes -- and in turn let other LGBT athletes know they are not alone. "You can be real and you can be yourself," Mertens said. "That only starts when you can love yourself and let others love you. Thats kind of where I was going with this." Bearcats coach Glen Fowles said the players were overwhelmingly supportive of his decision. "Its been great to see the way our guys have rallied around," Fowles said. "For our guys, Conner is just a kicker." Team captain and junior inside linebacker Jack Nelson said: "It wasnt a big deal and we were glad he felt comfortable to tell us." While several LGBT athletes have come out, including former NBA player Jason Collins, WNBA star Brittney Griner and Major League Soccer player Robbie Rogers, its believed that Mertens is the first active college football player at any level to publicly announce his bisexuality. Willamette issued a statement supporting Mertens decision, saying the university "respects his contribution to a more humane and just world." Fowles joked about how Mertens first approached him: "He says, Coach, Im really going to utilize this open door policy." Mertens, who told his family just after Christmas, said he was humbled by the response. "It sounds corny, but I legitimately feel theres a weight off my shoulders. Its tiring to pretend your something else for 24-7, for 18 or 19 years of your life," he said. "So finally to be able to joke about it, to be honest about it, not have to put on this mask, Im finally able to take a deep breath." The Bearcats play in the Northwest Conference. The team went 7-2 overall last season and finished third in the league at 4-2. Mertens did not play his freshman season because he hurt his left knee while playing soccer. He will compete with two other kickers on the Bearcats roster. cheap jerseys . The Penguins get by the Blue Jackets, the Wild and Kings force Game Sevens. Notes on Malkin, Crosby, Johnson, Dubinsky, Parise, Kopitar, Williams, Stalock and more. PENGUINS GET PAST BLUE JACKETS Pittsburgh looked like they were free and clear after racing out to a 4-0 lead, led by Evgeni Malkins hat trick, but then the Blue Jackets scored three goals in a 4:52 span in the third period to make for a heart-stopping finish. In the end, the Penguins held on to win 4-3, taking the series in six games. Malkin, who took some criticism for his lack of production, finished the series with seven points in six games. Not bad at all. After being on the ice for 71.2% of 5-on-5 shot attempts in Game Six, Malkin finished the series with an impressive 59.2% Corsi percentage. Malkin was the driving force for Pittsburgh in the deciding game, as was D Kris Letang, who was on for 21 5-on-5 shot attempts for and seven against. Penguins D Matt Niskanen contributed a couple of assists, giving him eight points for the series. That tied D Paul Martin for the Penguins scoring lead. The ever-disappointing Sidney Crosby (I kid, I kid) had six assists in six games and was on the ice for 61.3% of 5-on-5 shot attempts. If thats a Crosby worthy of criticism, rue the day that he starts playing to his typical level of excellence. Columbus attack was paced by a couple of defencemen. Fedor Tyutin, with a goal and an assist, and Jack Johnson, with two assists, led the charge. Johnson finished the series with a team-leading seven points, despite struggling in puck possession terms. While Johnson struggled in terms of possession, James Wisniewski fared pretty well in that regard, at least in relative terms. Centres Brandon Dubinsky and Ryan Johansen each had six points for the Blue Jackets, while rookie LW Boone Jenner had five. Dubinsky had 40 hits over the course of the series, a total that leads the NHL postseason. That the series proved to be competitive should come as no surprise, but it should also come as no surprise that the Penguins had the high-end skill to overcome a spirited challenge from Columbus. WILD FORCE SEVEN Fighting for their playoff lives, the Minnesota Wild jumped out to a 2-0 lead, gave it back, then scored the winner with 6:29 left in third period, before adding a couple of empty-netters to ice a 5-2 victory in Game Six, forcing Game Seven back in Denver. Wild LW Zach Parise had a huge game, netting the game-winner as part of a two goal, two assist performance. Parise now has 10 points in the postseason, tied with Colorados Nathan MacKinnon for the playoff scoring lead. Ryan Suter and Mikko Koivu each had two assists and Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist. Wild LW Nino Niederreiter had quite a game in possession terms, on for 15 shot attempts for and three against (83.3%). With Niederreiter off the ice, the Wild had 38.2% of the 5-on-5 shot attempts. Though they came out on the losing end, Colorado did get C Matt Duchene back in the lineup and he contributed an assist in 18:52 of ice time. RW Ryan OReilly assisted on both Colorado goals. That this series is going seven games is rather fortunate for the Avalanche. The Wild have the best Fenwick Close in the playoffs which, naturally, means Colorado has the worse and that 60-40 disparity in even-strength shot attempts is difficult to overcome. The Avalanche have overcome shot deficits all season, leaning heavily on G Semyon Varlamov, so that is likely what they will need if they are going to get through Game Seven. The Avalanche can also take some comfort in the fact that the home team has won every game in this series. KINGS PUSH SHARKS TO SEVEN Faced with the prospect of losing their three-games-to-none lead in the series, the San Jose Sharks were forced to go into Game Six without top defenceman Marc-Edouard Vlasic, who was injured in Game Five, and then made the decision to start backup goaltender Alex Stalock in place of Antti Niemi. The result? A 4-1 Kings win, sending the series to Game Seven back in San Jose. Tied at one, with 8:04 remaining, Kings RW Justin Williams scored the winning goal, pushing Stalock back towards the Sharks net, jarring the puck loose and into the net. As controversial as that goal was, the Kings tacked on two more in short order, both by C Anze Kopitar, in the next 2:46 to put the game away. Kopitar added an assist, giving him eight points in the series, to the lead the Kings, while D Drew Doughty added a couple of assists, giving him six points in six games. Williams finished with two goals and an assist to lead the Kings. This series has been very even, with the Sharks holding a 132-128 edge in unblocked shot attempts with the score close (within a goal for the first two periods, tied in the third/overtime). Thats close enough for goaltending to make the difference and, given the uncertainty in that respect with the Sharks, Jonathan Quick is more appealing. Even so, the Sharks do get home-ice advantage in their attempt to avoid being the fourth team in NHL history to lose a series in which they led three games to none. OKLAHOMA CITY -- The drama was sapped early from Oklahoma Citys blowout win over Utah, except for one detail. Thunder forward Kevin Durant is nearing Michael Jordans mark for consecutive games with at least 25 points. With the crowd buzzing late in the third quarter, Durant reached the mark for the 38th consecutive time, leaving him two games short of Jordans accomplishment, which is the most in the past 50 years. He finished with 31 points and nine assists to help Oklahoma City defeat the Jazz 116-96 on Sunday afternoon. Jordan did it for 40 straight games for the Chicago Bulls during the 1986-87 season. Durant is aware of the mark, but the NBAs leading scorer left worrying about it to the crowd at Chesapeake Energy Arena. "Im just going out there, playing my game," he said. "If it happens, cool. If it doesnt, cool. Thats how I approach it -- just playing within the offence. If a shots there, shoot it. If a pass is there, pass it. I try to play as simple as I can. If that (25 points or more) comes with it, then so be it, but if not, Im not going to lose any sleep." Durant was fouled on a 3-pointer with 4:02 left in the third quarter and was awarded three free throws. He scored his 24th point on the first one, and the crowd got into it before the second one. After he made it, the fans let out a loud cheer. He also made the third to give the Thunder an 84-56 lead. Durant extended the streak without playing in the fourth quarter for the second consecutive game. Russell Westbrook scored 19 points, Serge Ibaka had 17 points and Caron Butler added 15 for the Thunder, who have won six of seven. Oklahoma City shot 55 per cent from the field and made 11 of 18 3-pointers and 23 of 26 free throws. Enes Kanter had 18 points and 12 rebounds, Richard Jefferson scored 17 points and Gordon Hayward added 16 points and nine rebounds for the Jazz, who have lost four in a row. Utah trailed 11-0 before Jefferson finally scored with 7:34 left in the first quarter. Oklahoma City led 26-9 at the end of the quarter. It matched the fewest points the Thunder have allowed in any quarter this season and was the lowest for the Jazz in a first quarter this season. Utah missed the NBA low for an opening quarter this season by making a basket with 19.5 seconds left. "They were aggressive on the defensive end and we settleed for a lot of jump shots," Jazz coach Tyrone Corbin said.dddddddddddd "We missed jump shots and they were able to run the ball out on us. In that first quarter, I thought we were hungry for it, but thats what good teams do. They come out and try to bury you right from the beginning. They had a lot of success doing it in the first quarter." Haywards first basket came with 3:21 left in the first half. Even with his 3-point play, the Jazz still trailed 49-30. Oklahoma City led 59-40 at halftime, and it might have been a larger lead if Jefferson hadnt dropped in 15 points in the first half, well above his season average of 10.2 points per game. Durant scored 18 points in the first half on 6-for-8 shooting and helped the Thunder shoot 57 per cent before the break. Utah cut Oklahoma Citys lead to 89-77 late in the quarter before Durant hit a 3-pointer over Hayward with two seconds remaining to push the lead back up to 15 points. "That was tough," Utah forward Marvin Williams said. "That was a big three. It almost took the wind out of your sails, to fight so hard to get back to that position, to cut it to 12, thinking youre going to start the fourth at 12 (down), and he makes an amazing shot like that over a defender. It was a big shot. It kind of took the wind out of our sails, almost, a little bit, because we had fought so hard." Hayward scored 13 points in the period, and the Jazz scored 37 points on 60 per cent shooting. Utah scored 21 points in the final 3:44 of the third. The Thunder held on, and now, Oklahoma City can look ahead to Thursdays showdown with West leader San Antonio. MIAMI -- Five-time all-star David Wright has been activated by the New York Mets and is in the lineup batting cleanup for the start of a weekend series at Florida. Wright had been sidelined since May 16 because of a stress fracture in his lower back. With Wrights return, the Mets are that much closer to fielding the lineup they envisioned in spring training. NL batting leader Jose Reyes and slugger Carlos Beltran returned earlier this week. Not that the lineup is necessarily set for good. MADRID, Spain -- Real Sociedads hopes of returning to the Champions League next season took a hit on Monday after it fell 3-2 at home to bottom-of-the-table Rayo Vallecano in the Spanish league. Sociedad slipped eight points behind fourth-place Athletic Bilbao, which holds the final qualifying place for Europes top-tier event. Rayo, meanwhile, is only one point from salvation after Ruben Rochina smashed a rising shot while on the run into goal for the 67th-minute winner. Sociedad twice took the lead, in the opening instances through Inigo Martinez and then Ruben Pardo after the restart, but on both occasions the visitors equalized within minutes through Joaquin Larrivey and Alberto Bueno, respectively. Despite Reals constant pressing over the final 15 minutes, the Basque club couldnt string together a decent effort on goal as Carlos Vela was guilty of wasting a clear opportunity at the close. "This game has given us life, it could be a fundamental result," Rayo coach Paco Jemez said. Rayo has 26 points alongside fellow relegation battlers Almeria and Valladolid, while Getafe is just one point better. Elsewhere, 10-man Malaga also enhanced its hopes of surviving the drop after securing a 2-0 win away to Osasuna, which is now just three points clear of relegation. Samuel Sanchez gave the visitors the lead a quarter of the way in before the visitors were reduced by a player when Jesus Gamez was shown a second yellow card in the 52nd. No matter, as Nordin Amrabat doubled the Andalucians lead in the 66th, Malaga also hung on thanks to stellar goalkeeping by Willy Caballero. Malaga joined Elche and Osasuna on 29 points with the victory. Real Madrid leads the standings with 67 points, three better than Atletico Madrid. JERSEY CITY, N.J. -- Richard Sherman, Russell Wilson and Marshawn Lynch deservedly draw the attention for what theyve done in getting the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Players like Jermaine Kearse, Walter Thurmond and Malcolm Smith are just as big a reason why Seattle is facing Denver in Sundays championship game. Seattle may have one of the better starting lineups in the NFL, but the depth that general manager John Schneider and coach Pete Carroll have amassed is equally impressive. Its the reason they can rotate eight different defensive linemen. Its why when Brandon Browner was injured and Thurmond suspended, Byron Maxwell could step in and the play in Seattles secondary not suffer. Its a regular refrain in the Seattle locker room to hear teammates say the Seahawks reserves could be starters on other teams. And there is some proof: in the past year 23 players once with Seattle have spent time on the 53-man roster of other teams. "Its crazy because were always saying our backups could be starters. We always say that," strong safety Kam Chancellor said. "Those guys, people dont see this, but in practice those guys play just as good as us. Theyre making plays, getting the ball. Those guys contribute on special teams. Our special teams are probably one of the best. "Those guys put in work on special teams and it just goes unseen." When Carroll and Schneider took over, there was a revolving door of roster moves --839 in total since before the start of the 2010 season -- that followed in an effort to make a roster that was competitive beyond just the starters on each side of the ball. They wanted a depth chart that was the envy of the NFL. They wanted their reserves coveted by other teams. They wanted guys they were going to be released grabbed off the waiver wire the second they were made available. Seattle got its wish. Of the players released in the past year, five ended up in Jacksonville and four landed in Kansas City. "John and I have joined together aggressively to compete at every single turn, at every opportunity whatever it may be, to see if theres something in there for us," Carroll said. "Hes done a great job of having the competitive will to keep pushing and fighting and clawing and scratching to have the opportunity that has sent us down the road early on with the hundreds of guys that came through the program." Kearse, Thurmond and Smith are just three examples of players not counted on as full-time starters that have proven invaluable. Seattles seen contributions from Michael Bowie, Clinton McDonald, Jeremy Lane and Heath Farwell just to name a few more. Kearse was an undrafted free agent that signed with Seattle in 2012 and became a needed option as a third and fourth receiver this season with Percy Harvin and Sidney Rice suffering through injuries. Kearse finished with 22 receptions and four touchdowns in the regular season, but his biggest catch came in the NFC championship game when his 35-yard TD grab in the fourth quarter gave Seattle a 20-17 lead. Thurmond missed four games late in the season when he was suspended for violating the leagues substance-abuse policy. But hes started three games at cornerback this season and is Seattles best option as the fifth defensive back covering slot receivers -- a big emphasis this week with the amount of times the Broncos throw. Smith has shown the same kind of versatility at linebacker. Hes played both outside spot this season, first when Bruce Irvin was suspended and later when injuries to K.J. Wright and Bobby Wagner forced shuffling. "Through all the stuff we have gone through there has always been a guy who stepped up and made plays," Wagner said. "Last year it was Walter, this year it was Walter and Maxwell and guys like Malcolm, everybody. We have a bunch of players that if someone went down can step in and do a great job." One of the ways Seattle was able to create such a dynamic roster came from the three-way quarterback competition that Carroll had last season and which Wilson eventually won. It sent the message to the entire roster and to any free agents -- big-name or small-time -- that Seattle was a place they could come and have a chance. "You could tell looking at our board of players that we had fast, confident, intelligent individuals," Schneider said last week. "Guys who knew they were going to come in and compete for positions because the previous year we had a three person quarterback competition. "You know you have a shot when you have a three person quarterback competition as a player." cheap nfl jerseys from china . TORONTO -- Olympic bobsled champion Heather Moyse has barely had time to catch her breath since returning home from the Sochi Games. After a welcome-home celebration in Summerside, P.E.I., she has been busy criss-crossing the country in recent weeks for speaking engagements, meetings and sponsorship appearances. Like usual, Moyses daytimer is full and shes been racking up the air miles. But for the first time in ages, there is no firm sporting goal in sight. "I just need to sit and do nothing," Moyse said. "But I have no doubt I will have that itch to get physical again." The question is which sport will be next on her list? In addition to her bobsled dominance with pilot Kaillie Humphries, Moyse has competed at the last two womens rugby World Cup tournaments. She has ruled out playing at the 2014 event this summer in France. Moyse also reached an elite level in track cycling when she gave that sport a try. Shes 35 now and isnt sure where her path will take her. Moyse plans to continue with her motivational speeches and will head to China this August to serve as an athlete role model at the Youth Olympics in Nanjing. "Theres a part of me that misses something like that totally different life than being an athlete," Moyse said in a recent interview. "But I dont know. I really hope that if a lot of this motivational stuff takes off, I can see myself doing a little bit of life coaching, especially for younger athletes or for young adults who are trying to have maybe the courage to change paths and do something different." Moyse and Humphries successfully defended their Olympic title at the Sanki Sliding Center last February. The victory came just three months after Moyse returned to the World Cup circuit with a victory in her first race after taking a long break from the sport. She had returned to the Calgary training centre just weeks before that and wowed the national bobsled brass with a record push time. The mission was classic Moyse -- try to conquer a big goal and in doing so, raise the bar even higher. "I almost feel like a rejuvenated athlete," she said. "And for me, I love those athletic challenges. So although yes, I want a break, I feel like I would want to find something (later on). It may not be bobsledding, it may not even be rugby or cycling, I have no idea. "Im not ready to decide on where my focus is going to be but I see myself wanting to do that." Moyse has time to consider her options. Rugby sevens will make its debut at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero. A return to the bobsled for the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea is also a possibility. cheap nfl jerseys from china . PHILADELPHIA -- Back in the ballpark where he used to be an ace, Randy Wolf shut down his former team and outpitched the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner. Wolf tossed six crisp innings, Ryan Braun and Casey McGehee homered and the Milwaukee Brewers beat Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 9-0 Tuesday night. The Brewers became the first team to win a series against the NL East-leading Phillies this season. Theyll try to complete a three-game sweep on Wednesday afternoon when Cliff Lee takes the mound for Philadelphia. Wolf (2-2) allowed two hits, struck out five and walked three against his former team. The left-hander had his best seasons with Philadelphia in the early 2000s, and was an all-star in 03. "It was tough early on. I didnt have my best stuff," Wolf said. "I tried to mix speeds a lot and I think I kept them off balance." Jimmy Rollins had a bunt single in the first and Shane Victorino hit a double in the third for the Phillies only hits of the game. Sean Green, Zach Braddock and Mike McClendon each pitched an inning after Wolf left. "I had really good defence behind me," Wolf said. "Theyre a dangerous team. It was his worst start since he allowed six runs in six innings in a loss at the New York Yankees last June 15. Halladay tossed a complete game at Washington last Wednesday, needing 123 pitches to do it. He got an extra day rest because of a rainout, but still wasnt as sharp as usual. "I felt good. There were times early when there were a couple pitches that cost me that werent where I wanted them," Halladay said. Braun then made an outstanding play in the bottom half to rob Rollins of extra bases and save at least one run. With runners on first and second, Rollins hit a drive to deep left. Braun made a leaping, backhanded grab at the warning track after a long run. "We were gonna score some runs there," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "He made a tremendous catch." Braun got things started in the sixth with a walk. He moved to second on Prince Fielders single and scored on Mark Kotsays one-out single. Fielder chased Halladay with an RBI single that extended Milwaukees lead to 4-0. David Herndon entered and allowed McGehees three-run shot. LOUDON, N.H. -- Ryan Hunter-Reay heard the urgent call on his radio. "Theyre wrecking behind you!" his pit crew warned him as a light rain fell. "Theyre wrecking behind you." That collision with just 10 laps to go made a mess of the finish of the first IndyCar race at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway since 1998 -- and made a winner of Hunter-Reay. The crash occurred seconds after a decision to resume the race on a wet track that angered drivers. Will Power even flashed an obscene gesture at race officials after being involved in the wreck. That brought out the caution flag and, a short time later, the race was declared over 10 miles short of its scheduled 225-mile distance on the mile oval. Brian Barnhart, IndyCars vice-president of competition, said he made the wrong decision. "It was no condition to race in. Shame on him," Power said. "We worked so hard for that all day. Im ashamed of myself for losing it. I have to say I was as angry as Ive ever been when I got out of the car." Barnhart said he hadnt considered whether to penalize Power. Torontos James Hinchcliffe finished fourth, while Alex Tagliani of Lachenaie, Que., was 19th. The trouble began when Danica Patrick spun sideways, causing a chain reaction that involved Power and Takuma Sato, who had been involved in a collision midway through the race that knocked out series points leader Dario Franchitti. "That was definitely my mistake," said Patrick, who felt the final restart was wrong. "I got on the throttle and (the car) came around. I take full responsibility for that one and the mess that it created. ... Im one to finish races and be smart and get through it all, but it was pretty slippery out there." Michael Andretti -- owner of Andretti Autosports, which has Hunter-Reay and Patrick -- was livid. "This is the worst officiating Ive ever seen," he said. Others felt the same. "It was really wet out there and we shouldnt have gone out," said runner-up Oriol Servia. Barnhart said he received input from his group of spotters and officials but said it was a difficult decision because the rain was very light. But he knew immediately after making it that it was the wrong one. "As soon as you had the guys stand on the gas out there, you saw right away it was the wrong decision," he said. "At that point in time, youre just kind of sick to your stomach and realize it was an error on race controls standpoint and, clearly, my fault." At least one person tried to view the finish in a positive way, even the shot captured by a television camera of Power raising two middle fingers toward officials. "Id like to put it on our ticket brochure for next year," said track general manager Jerry Gappens, hoping to build interest in the event. This years race was part of a one-year contract. IndyCar series CEO Randy Bernard said discussions would be held about whether to return next year. Powers fifth-place finish moved him 47 points behind Franchitti, who started the day 63 points ahead, with five races left. But the crash deprived him of a chance to finish even better in the race. Officials reverted to the race order that existed before the final restart, leaving Servia in second place and Scott Dixon in third. But Servia said he should have won because he took the lead during the final restart. Dixon said he also passed Hunter-Reay and should have finished second. "I just dont understand race controls thinking," Dixon said. "It isnt make things up as you go racing. It is IndyCar racing with rules." But Barnhart said "it was the right thing" to revert to the order before the restart because he had made a bad decision that put drivers in jeopardy and caused costly damage to several cars. After Franchittis race ended early, Hunter-Reay took the lead and held it most of the way for his fifth win in 113 IndyCar races. He came in third in two of his three previous races and now has five consecutive top 10 finishes after managing just one in his other eight. He wished his win "was in a little bit different way, but well absolutely take it after the year weve had," he said. The start of the race was moved up by a half hour in hopes of avoiding rain predicted for late in the afternoon. The crashes began on the very first lap when Mike Conway spun sideways coming out of Turn 2 and hit Graham Rahal. Both ended up on the grass and were out just seconds into the race. Then, moments after the first restart, Helio Castroneves also spun coming out of Turn 2. He continued after repairs but never was a factor. A light rain began falling on about the 70th lap and the yellow flag came out six laps later for moisture on the track. After 33 laps under the caution flag, the race restarted with Franchitti in the lead followed by Sato and Servia. Then Franchitti was knocked out "It was my fault," Sato said. "I was too close to Dario and had debris in my eye. ... Im sorry about that." Soon after, another crash ended the day for Tony Kanaan and Tomas Scheckter. The last caution flag came out on the 206th lap because of more moisture on the track. At that point, the top three cars were driven by Hunter-Reay, Servia and Dixon. Then came the final, ill-fated restart. "It was a strange day," Hunter-Reay said, "but sometimes racing is strange." wholesale nfl jerseys . "I think shed be pretty overwhelmed, shed be pretty humbled by the whole thing," Burkes father, Gordon, said following the news conference. "Certainly, shes had a lot of nice things happen to her lately as far as awards go but this is a special one. "Its for all of Canada. I think shed be grateful." Also selected were ski jumper Horst Bulau, cross-country skier Pierre Harvey, hockey player Geraldine Heaney, figure skater Elizabeth Manley and rugby player Gareth Rees. Wheelchair basketball pioneer Tim Frick and basketball coach Kathy Shields were named as builders. Burke, who spent her early years in Barrie, Ont., before moving to Squamish, B.C., was the first woman to land a 720-, 900- and 1080-degree rotation jump in competition. She was a world champion, a four-time X Games gold medallist and was a driving force in womens ski halfpipe being included at the 2014 Sochi Olympics. But Burke never got the opportunity to compete in Russia. She died Jan. 19, 2012 while training in Utah. Gordon Burke said his daughters induction will only create more exposure for her sport. "That was always something she absolutely pushed for harder than anything else was to get more and more people into it, especially girls," he said. "She loved it so much and had so much fun that she wanted everybody to keep having the same amount of fun she was having. "As long as she knew everybody was having a good time and living life in a good way, she was happy." Manley, 48, who captured the 1988 womens Olympic figure-skating silver medal in Calgary, said her thoughts immediately turned to her late mother, Joan, when she first learned of her induction. "My mom was my best friend and my biggest supporter and its moments like this when you go, Gosh, I wish she was here to share in this great moment with me." Manley said. "But the time between the call and being here made me really appreciate what Ive done. "Sometimes as an athlete we dont sit back and appreciate ourselves enough, were always go, go, go. This is something that has made me really realize I am maybe a legacy in figure skating for this country and many, many years after Im long gone Ill still be remembered. Thats such a great feeling, its really rewarding for me.dddddddddddd" Manley, a native of Belleville, Ont., was a three-time Canadian champion and a silver medallist at the 1988 world championships. She was also the first female skater in Canada to successfully land a triple-double combination jump in competition and in 88 received the Order of Canada. But Manleys biggest battle came off the ice with severe depression. She has made her fight public hoping it can help others deal with mental illness. "My passion today is working with mental illness and working with teens and youth because I was a teen who struggled and I didnt have that availability to embrace the help that was available for me," she said. "There were years and years of people giving to Elizabeth Manley and I feel now standing here its my turn to give back and thats what Im really about." Rees, a 46-year-old native of Duncan, B.C., was one of the most accomplished rugby players Canada has ever produced. Hes the only man to have represented his country —starting every game — in four straight Rugby World Cups (1987, 91, 95, and 99) and remains among the top-10 in all-time tournament scoring. And until recently, Rees was the Canadian teams all-time leading scorer. Twice he served as Canadas captain at the Rugby World Cup (95, 99) and played professionally for 10 years, winning scoring titles in France, Wales and England. But ever the team player, Rees deflected the praise for his induction to the other players he shared the field with. "This says a lot about my teammates, the things we achieved on the world stage and were able to show the world game what Canadians are all about," he said. "We learned playing rugby here in Canada and were able to take that on the international stage and do well. "Obviously, as a game rugby is getting more recognition in Canada and thats great. I think the values of the game are still as true now as when I started playing and the access boys and girls have to play it is very important. And sevens rugby being in the Olympics has changed all that and its great to see." And although rugby is now an Olympic sport, Rees doesnt long for the opportunity to turn back time and become an Olympian. "I feel Im pretty lucky about the time I played," Rees said. "It wasnt pro when I started, I got my education and then I turned pro and had some good years in Europe so I dont think Id change it. "Sevens is a pretty tough go. I dont know if Id make some of the teams now." ' ' '

BARCELONA, Spain -- Top-ranked Rafael Nadal looked more like his confident self on the clay in passing Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-3, 6-3, to reach the Barcelona Open quarterfinals on Thursday. Nadal was struggling with his game coming into the event and an unconvincing opening victory on Wednesday did little to calm the nerves. But Nadal looked more assured as he ousted the 37th-ranked Dodig in 83 minutes in the third round. Nadal moves on to face fellow Spanish player Nicolas Almagro in an early rematch of last seasons final, which Nadal won for his eight title at the tournament in the Catalan capital. Almagro advanced after beating Fernando Verdasco 6-3, 6-3. Dodigs attempts to come forward were met with passing shots from Nadal, who finally broke for 3-2 after coming to the net to force Dodig into netting a return. Dodig broke right back but Nadal had found his rhythm as he forced Dodig into 15 errors in the first set, when he won the last three games for the lead. Nadal maintained his play to start the second set, when he made fewer errors and seemed to grow in confidence to break Dodig for the fourth time as he sealed the win. "Theres still some work to do but I definitely took a step forward from yesterday. I move on feeling more assured," Nadal said. "I needed this game." Earlier, fourth-seeded Kei Nishikori beat Andrey Golubev of Kazakhstan 6-0, 6-4. Nishikori had been sidelined by a groin injury since beating Roger Federer four weeks ago. Russian player Teymuraz Gabashvili followed up his win over fifth-ranked David Ferrer with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over another Spaniard, Inigo Cervantes, to reach the quarterfinals. Ernests Gulbis of Latvia, Marin Cilic of Croatia, and Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany all won to advance. cheap nfl jerseys china . Not exactly what youd expect from a first-time PGA Tour winner. "I gave a little bit of a fist pump, I think, didnt I?" Kirk said grinning. "I dont know. I made a three-inch putt to win. Thats not exactly an accomplishment. All the other shots I hit were pretty good, though." They certainly were. Kirk, a 26-year-old rookie, shot a 4-under 68 to beat Tom Pernice Jr. and George McNeill by one stroke at Annandale Golf Club. It ended an impressive week for the Georgia graduate, who tied the tournament record with a 22-under performance over four rounds. Kirk had a one-stroke lead going into the final round and rarely flinched. He never trailed, breaking a tie with McNeill on No. 17 by hitting a 140-yard approach over water to within five feet of the hole for an easy birdie putt. The bold shot looked risky. But Kirk calmly surveyed his options and said he never thought twice. "People sometimes make more of it than what it is," Kirk said. "It was 140 yards and it was a 9-iron, so I was aiming right at the pin and nowhere else. That was my only thought." Kirk played his first PGA Tour event at the Viking Classic in 2007, receiving a sponsors exemption just weeks after turning pro. But he missed the cut, and on Sunday marvelled at how much things have changed in four years. "Its pretty amazing to think back to then, how far Ive come from," Kirk said. "My game isnt that much better than it was then, but just the comfort level that I have now to be able to go out for 18 today and feel one hundred per cent comfortable in my own skin." Matt McQuillan was the top Canadian on the leaderboard after shootinng a final-round 67.dddddddddddd The Kingston, Ont., native finished nine shots behind Kirk. Calgarys Stephen Ames (70) finished at 10 shots back, while David Hearn of Brantford, Ont., stumbled with a 73 to end up at 6 under. Annandale received more than 11.3 centimetres of rain over the past week, and the soft fairways and greens led to plentiful birdies throughout the tournament. But the final round proved to be the toughest, with scores rising slightly as the course dried out and wind picked up. Sunghoon Kang, another rookie, and McNeill started the day one stroke behind Kirk, but couldnt keep pace. Pernice fell just short in his bid to become the second-oldest winner in tour history and the first over-50 player to win since Fred Funk in 2007. Sam Snead was 52 when he won the Greater Greensboro Open in 1965. Pernice started the day two strokes back, but fired a 67 for the third straight day to stay in contention. He put his approach shot on No. 18 within 10 feet of the hole, but his birdie putt slid to the left at the last second. McNeill also missed a birdie putt on No. 18. "I just needed to make a good firm stroke, maybe just outside the right edge and all that good stuff," Pernice said. "But it looked like I pulled it." Pernice said Kirks victory wasnt surprising considering his consistency throughout the season. "The young guys are getting bigger and stronger and theyre able to compete right away," Pernice said. Kirk is the fifth rookie to win on the tour this season -- just the second time thats happened since 1970. Hes been consistent all season, ranking 51st on the money list coming into the Viking Classic, and just missed his first career win after finishing second to Phil Mickelson at the Shell Houston Open. The victory earns Kirk US$648,000 of the $3.6 million purse and 250 points in the FedEx Cup. ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Linda Denman walked up to Citi Field and right away noticed something different -- new 1.2 metre-high steel flood gates, running along one entire side of the ballpark. "I said, Theyre getting ready," she said Friday night. With Hurricane Irene bearing down on the metro area, Major League Baseball was taking no chances, either. The games between the Atlanta Braves and New York Mets scheduled for Saturday and Sunday were postponed, rescheduled as a single-admission doubleheader on Sept. 8 beginning at 4:10 p.m. "Its not something to mess with," Mets manager Terry Collins said. Collins, in fact, planned to get in his car Saturday morning and drive west. Destination, unknown. "Im getting out," he said. The Mets arent scheduled to play again until Monday, when they host a doubleheader against Florida. The Braves were set to fly back to Atlanta after Friday nights game, and were off until Tuesday nights home game against Washington. Several of the Mets checked into whether they could actually ride out the storm inside Citi Field, staying at the stadium during the weekend. Pitcher Dillon Gee and catcher Josh Thole planned to spend the next couple of days in Binghamton, in upstate New York. Tholes wife is from that area, where the Mets have their double-A affiliate. "If it was just me, Id stay," Gee said. "But my wife is scared, so were leaving." Catcher Mike Nickeas is currently staying at a hotel in Times Square, and was considering his options. "Were not in an evacuation zone, so well see," he said. "Im sure theyll tell us what we should do." Before Friday nights game, a note was posted on the centre-field video board telling fans about the weekend postponements. The Braves hold a big lead in the NL wild-card race and speedy centre fielder Michael Bourn knew how hed spend the next few days. "Getting rest is always a good thing," he said. "Im just going to take it easy and relax." Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez planned to hold a workout at Turner Field, probably on Sunday. Having three straight days off at this point in the season, he said, was unusual. "People think, Oh, its the all-star break. But you kind of prepare for that," he said. "This is different." Different, just like those flood gates that workmen were still assembling at Citi Field as gametime approached. As music played inside the park during batting practice, the sounds of drills whirred outside. Even though the New York Yankees were scheduled to play this weekend in Baltimore, they made a change in the Bronx. They announced the ticket office at Yankee Stadium would be closed during the weekend. With Flushing Bay only a few long fly balls from Citi Field, the Mets were taking precautions to protect against any possible storm surge. The flood gates come in seven separate panels and were being put in place for the first time at the three-year-old park. They stood up against the stadiums outer wall, running the whole length of the right-field side, across the street from a row of auto body shops. Gregory Denman, from Fair Lawn, N.J., came to the game wearing his Mets hat and a Tom Seaver team jersey. He had tickets for Sundays postponed game, and figured hed redeem them for something next season. At first, he didnt notice the new flood gates. "Its interesting," he said, studying them more closely. His wife, Linda, spotted them quickly. "I think thats smart," she said. Cheap MLB Jerseys . The 33-year-old sit-skier from Kimberley, B.C., won a gold medal in the super combined and a silver in the downhill. The gold medal was the first of Duecks career.SOCHI, Russia – You could feel electricity in the air between Ryan Callahan and Yevgeni Medvedev as they stood nose to nose exchanging verbal jabs just outside the crease of Sergei Bobrovsky. You could feel it when the capacity crowd at Bolshoy Ice Dome roared as Pavel Datsyuk exploded past the American defence and beat the glove of Jonathan Quick for the first Russian goal. You could feel it when T.J. Oshie jumped off the bench not once, twice, three, four or even five times in the shootout, but six glorious times, the St. Louis Blues excitable winger finally ending it an exhilarating eighth round. Thirty-four years after the Americans and Russians made history in Lake Placid with the Miracle on Ice did another classic emerge at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. Albeit of less weight, both in the tournament (it was a preliminary round game) and on a global stage (the Cold War has long since ended), the proceedings on a sunny Saturday afternoon were about as entertaining and exhilarating as hockey can get and a delightful reminder of what the NHL has to offer the Olympics. "It was awesome," said Joe Pavelski, still beaming afterward. "Whatever type of game you want to explain it as, it was that." "Obviously we know the history between the Americans and the Russians," added Patrick Kane, "and you know this one kind of had a different story of its own, obviously. But being in Russia here, playing here, seeing how the crowd was into the game and being able to come up with the win is nice." The buzz in the rink, the fierce competitiveness, the relentless tempo, the tension and hostilities, the exuberant chants of the mostly Russian crowd any time Datsyuk, Malkin, Ovechkin rushed up the ice, there was something different about the air in this one. "It was amazing," said Kane. "I dont think anyone could have asked for a better game." "Great hockey game," added Ovechkin. And it went to the Americans. Oshie, with a seemingly unending toolbox of moves, scored on four of six shootout dangles, beating Bobrovsky (and the scary duo of Datsyuk and Ilya Kovalchuk) one last time to capture the 3-2 victory for Team USA, all but sealing Group A and a trip to the quarterfinals. The gripping, edge-of-chair shootout, which saw Datsyuk, Oshie and Kovalchuk bounce up and off the bench time and time again, was just the icing on a spectacular cake though. In fact, there was so much more. Start with Kanes heart-stopping overtime breakaway, the one Bobrovosky stopped by closing the pads on a five-hole attempt. Circle back to Datsyuk tucking one under the glove of Quick for the games first goal, a shockwave of emmotion and energy pulsating through the crowd.dddddddddddd Continue on with the pockets of red, white and blue that stood tall when Cam Fowler – Canadian-born, American-raised – tied the score on a power-play. Recall the balloon of home turf enthusiasm burst when Pavelski popped the air out, blasting Kanes remarkable cross-ice feed for an American lead. "I tried not to look around," said Fowler afterward, "but you could feel the buzz in the air. It was such high intensity out there." There was Malkin angrily dumping Callahan with an emphatic cross-check in front of the Russian bench. There was the scrum that ensued after nearly every whistle. There was NHL defector Alex Radulov taking not one but two penalties, with the Americans scoring on both power-plays. There were the extra jabs, spears, slashes, punishing collisions, nose-to-nose confrontations, everything one would imagine in a smoldering rivalry suddenly renewed. There was David Backes charging like a train through Fedor Tyutin in the neutral zone. There was Ryan Kesler standing in the way of a dangerous point shot on the penalty kill, his stunned left hand requiring attention on the bench and in the dressing room, but not enough to keep him from returning. There was Ryan McDonagh sacrificing with another blocked shot shortly thereafter, the St. Paul, Minnesota native limping off in discomfort only to get back moments later. There were the undercurrents of history, two powerhouses pining for gold that has long since eluded both. There was that fiery U.S. penalty kill stonewalling an incredible array of power-play talent – Ovechkin, Malkin, Kovalchuk, Datsyuk – only to have Datsyuk tie it on the final man advantage with Dustin Brown in the box for a second time. There was Radulov, who screened Quick on the goal, smack-talking Brown as he exited the box. Not to be forgotten was the Tyutin point shot that beat Quick with less than five minutes left, nor the smattering of disapproval that followed when the goal was called back (the net was dislodged, however slightly). "I dont know what happened there, but definitely was a goal," said Ovechkin. And finally there was the shock, delight and awe of Oshie hopping onto the ice again and again. There was the joy on the American bench at the unlikely nature of it all. "At some point you think does he have any more moves left?" said American captain Zach Parise. All in all it was a game that wont soon be forgotten. "That one – in an atmosphere like that – is something youll remember for the rest of your life," said James van Riemsdyk. ' ' '

SAN ANTONIO -- "Beat the Heat!" had a whole new meaning in a sweltering start to the NBA Finals. The San Antonio Spurs handled the conditions, and the team, and it sure helped when a suffering LeBron James couldnt make it to the finish. Tim Duncan had 21 points and 10 rebounds, and the Spurs beat the Heat 110-95 on Thursday night in Game 1 at steamy AT&T Center. With an air conditioning failure making it feel like a sauna and causing James to battle cramps that knocked him out of the decisive stretch, the Spurs pulled away to win the opener of the first finals rematch since 1998. "After I came out of the game, they kind of took off," James said. "And it was frustrating sitting out and not be able to help our team." Manu Ginobili had 16 points and 11 assists, Tony Parker added 19 points and eight assists and the Spurs -- 6 for 6 in NBA Finals Game 1s -- shot 59 per cent. "Just very proud of my team," Parker said. "We kept believing, kept pushing. We know its not easy." They host Game 2 on Sunday -- likely in cooler conditions. James finished with 25 points but played only 33 minutes, and Miami was outscored 36-17 in the fourth quarter. "It sucks not being out there for your team, especially at this point in the season," James said. Dwyane Wade had 19 points and Chris Bosh added 18, but the Heat wilted in temperatures that soared to 90 degrees in the second half. "It was tough on both teams," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "They were pretty dead. We tried to get guys in and out. ... It was really hot out there." James, who had cramping issues two years ago in the finals, had to ask for a break in the fourth quarter and was getting treatment during a 15-4 Spurs run that turned around the game. James came back in and made a basket that cut it to two points with about 4 minutes left, but couldnt even run back on defence, promptly putting his hand up and lingering at the baseline until help arrived to take him off for good. "I think it felt like a punch in the gut when you see your leader limping like that back to the bench," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Danny Green followed with 3-pointer to trigger what became a 16-3 run to end the game. "You could see the heat was getting to a lot of guys. If I played as many minutes as he did, Id probably be cramping up, too," said Green, who scored 11 of his 13 points in the final quarter. The crowd chanted "Beat the Heat! Beat the Heat!" late in the game, which was just what the fans themselves were trying to do. The Spurs said an electrical failure for the power that runs the air conditioning system had occurred. They apologized for the inconvenience but also seemed to poke fun of it, playing songs with "hot" in the lyrics over the sound system. Fans were trying to cool themselves on the hot night, a reminder of what it was like in the old Boston Garden when the Celtics and Lakers got together. The Heat are the first team since those Celtics of 1984-87 to get to four straight finals. They are well-rested after a relatively easy roll through the Eastern Conference playoffs, a key to keeping Wade healthy entering the finals. James was the MVP of the series last year when the Heat rallied from five points down in the final half-minute of regulation to win Game 6 in overtime, then won a Game 7 that was close the whole way for their second straight championship. A rematch was widely anticipated and was close almost throughout. The Heat led 86-79 after Boshs four-point play with 9:38 remaining in the game, but it was all San Antonio from there, and Wade said there were problems even beyond James absence. "Obviously, tonight we wouldve loved to have him in there to finish the game, but weve got to finish the game better," Wade said. The Spurs ended up extending their NBA-record streak to eight straight home playoff wins by 15 or more points. Their roster is filled with international players, such as Parker and Ginobili, who both said they were used to playing without air conditioning overseas. Bosh, scoreless in Game 7 last year, scored Miamis first five points in the Heats 7-2 start. But Ginobili came off the bench firing, making consecutive 3-pointers for an 18-13 lead. Wade and James combined for six straight points before Ginobili made another 3, and Patty Mills added one to close the first-quarter scoring and give the Spurs a 26-20 advantage. The Spurs committed nine turnovers while managing only 20 points in the third quarter, and Miami led 78-74 heading to the fourth. Notes: James joined Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant as the only players with 4,000 points and 1,000 assists in the post-season. ... Toronto FC officially cut ties with striker Danny Koevermans and long-time goalkeeper Stefan Frei in a series of roster moves on Friday. Both players were out of contract. Though his strike rate was high, designated player Koevermans was often injured and appeared in only 30 games over the course of three seasons with TFC, including missing most of the 2012 campaign and appearing just four times in 2013. The 35-year-old Dutchman is expected to pursue opportunities in his homeland. TFCs first-round pick in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft, Frei was displaced as first-choice keeper by the acquisition of Joe Bednik from the Portland Timbers last off-season. When Toronto traded for Chris Konopka to deputize for Bednik in September, the writing was on the wall for Frei that his time in Toronto was nearing its end. Frei made 99 appearances for TFC over the course of his career, but only four in the last two seasons mostly due to injury. Out-of-contract forward Justin Braun will also not be returning to the team. Toronto FC also declined options on Welsh striker Robert Earnshaw and midfielders Bobby Convey, Darrel Russel and Michael Thomas. The team picked up the option on 11 players: goalkeepers Bendik, Konopka and Quillan Roberts; defenders Gale Agbossoumonde, Mark Bloom, Ryan Ricther; midfielders Kyle Bekker, Reggie Lambe, Jeremy Hall; forwards Bright Dike, Emery Welshman, and Andrew Wiedeman. The team already had nine players under contract for next season in defenders Jonas Elmer, Ashtone Morgan, Doneil Henry, Richard Eckersley and Steven Caldwell, as well as midfielders Matias Laba, Jonathan Osorio, Manuel Aparicio and Alvaro Rey. "We are writing a new story for TFC, and it begins with our current players," said Toronto FC General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko in a statement. "We have not had a solid core group like this in a long time, and this core is prepared and excited about taking this Club to the next level. We will continue discussing the possibility of returning next season with those players whose options were declined."
