ROME -- Italy captain Sergio Parisse returns for the final Six Nations match, against title-chasing England at Romes Stadio Olimpico. Parisse had a calf injury and was rested for the 46-7 defeat to Ireland last weekend but returns for Saturday in one of three changes. The Stade Francais No. 8 will once again draw level with the injured Martin Castrogiovanni as Italys most capped player when he makes his 105th appearance for his country. The other two changes come in the front row where Lorenzo Cittadini replaces Castrogiovanni after the prop was forced off at Lansdowne Road with broken ribs. On the left, Matias Aguero replaces Alberto De Marchi, who drops to the bench. Scotland-born George Biagi is on the bench and could make his debut for Italy, which has lost all four of its matches in this years tournament. "They have very few weak points," Italy coach Jacques Brunel said. "They play with confidence, they have hardly changed anything during the tournament and they have a good style of play. Moreover, theyre coming to Roma to win the tournament: they dont only want to beat us but they have to also score a lot of points. "On our part, its our last chance. A heavy defeat would mean our tournaments been completely negative and it would be a bit difficult to lift our heads back up." Still, he knew the stakes were even higher against Max Scherzer and the AL Central-leading Tigers. McCarthy won his fourth start in a row with a gritty effort, and the Yankees took the first of three straight matchups against Detroits Cy Young Award winners, beating the Tigers 2-1 Monday night. "This is a chance to step up against one of the best and to make our own mark," McCarthy said. "Its on me to do my part to kick in, especially against a tough team and Max." Brian McCann hit an RBI single and Jacoby Ellsbury had a sacrifice fly in the third, an inning in which the Tigers saved several runs with fine fielding. McCarthy (4-0) allowed five hits and an unearned run in 5 2-3 innings. The Yankees have won each of his five starts since being acquired July 6. Using a sharp curveball, he threw a season-high 116 pitches and struck out eight, including all three in the second when Victor Martinez led off with a double and Detroit loaded the bases. "Hes been huge for our rotation," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Hes come over here and pitched about as well as you could." David Robertson was perfect in the ninth for his 30th save. Scherzer (13-4) gave up nine hits over seven innings in losing for the first time since June 17, a span of eight starts. The reigning AL Cy Young winner yielded two runs in the third, but it couldve been much worse. With the bases loaded, Ellsbury sent a deep drive to centre field. Ezequiel Carrera, promoted from Triple-A last week after Austin Jackson was traded in the deadline deal that sent David Price to Detroit, made a long run before diving back toward the wall. Fully extended, Carrera made the catch and slid on his stomach onto the warning track. "That looked like it had a chance to give us a much bigger lead,&qquot; Girardi said.dddddddddddd "That was an unbelievable play by Carrera." Carrera was making his first start in centre field for Detroit. "Very happy," Carrera said through a translator. "Being aggressive is what helped me make the play and that is what I am trying to do here with the team." Ian Kinsler made two nice plays at second base in the third and had an RBI single in the fifth after Eugenio Suarez reached on third baseman Martin Prados throwing error. Got a question on rule clarification, comments on rule enforcements or some memorable NHL stories? Kerry wants to answer your emails at cmonref@tsn.ca! The mail bag is loaded with questions as to how the Los Angeles Kings third goal in their 6-0 win over Montreal on Tuesday could possibly have been allow to stand after Kyle Clifford backed into Habs goalie Carey Price deep in his goal crease (video link here). As my colleague Ray Ferraro said on the TSN broadcast, "Oh, I cant believe there are going to allow this goal...In my opinion, this is as goaltender interference penalty as youll find!" I couldnt agree more with Rays accurate assessment of this play. What troubles me most, beyond the tremendous inconsistency we see in calling goalkeeper interference, is that Referee Kevin Pollock had an unobstructed view from a stationery position in the corner closest to Kyle Clifford and Carey Price. The clear sightline gained in advance by the referee, as the Kings attacked the Montreal goal, should have made it easy to wave off Alec Martinezs first goal of the season and assess a penalty to Clifford for goalkeeper interference! The rebound off the initial save that Price made went to the opposite side of the net from where the referee was standing - as Clifford was backing deep into the goal crease and initiated contact with Price. From his position, the referee couldnt help but look through the blue paint to locate the puck and therefore should have reacted to the obvious goalkeeper interference that knocked Price off his set and thereby prevented him from defending his goal. It matters little to me that this goal didnt impact the final outcome of the game. What this play highlights for us is that the current system of detecting and enforcing goalkeeper interference is not working. When the referee on the goal line, and directly responsible for this call, doesnt catch the interference a subsequent conference held between the four officials is intended to act as a safety check to make the correct determination. That obviously isnt happening on a regular basis. Recent decisions in the past couple of weeks have impacted games and will continue to do so until a video review process is implemented to allow the refs to get this important call right! On Nov. 27, Evgeni Malkin pushed Toronto goalie Jonathan Bernier off a frozen puck and completely across the goal line with his stick before scoring the tying goal that forced overtime. While goalie interference was most obvious on this play, no call was made and the goal was allowed to stand. Pittsburgh picked up two points in the eventual shootout win. Two nights later, a Leaf goal was immediately disallowed by referee Justin St. Pierre when Habs goalie Carey Price moved forward to establish position in his crease and initiated contact with James van Riemsdyk. JVR had set up just inside the top of the crease with his skates visible in the blue paint. On that play rule 69.3 was enforced by the letter of the law which states, "If a goalkeeper, in the act of establishing his position within his goal crease, initiates contact with an attacking player who is in the goal crease, and this results in an impairment of the goalkeepers ability to defend his goal, and a goal is scored, the goal will be disallowed." The goalie interference rule doesnt get any clearer than that and demonstrates in both philosophy and spirit that a goalkeeper should be allowed to position himself within his blue paint to stop the puck without any physical obstruction unless initiated by a defending player. Im good with that philosophy and the call that referee Justin St. Pierre made in the enforcement of this rule. The problem we see far too often is that protection of the goalkeeper is not enforced consistently. I hope the leagues executives have addressed this pressing issue, among other problems that need their attention, during recent meetings. The implementation of referee video review and/or a coachs challenge seems to be the most logical solutions to get this crucial call right. Clinton McDonald Jersey . -- One game. Hakubun Shimomura, the minister in charge of education, sports and science, told Parliament Wednesday the stadium designed by award-winning British-Iraqi architect Zaha Hadid would cost 300 billion yen ($3 billion), and that was "too massive a budget." The 80,000-seat, futuristic-looking stadium has been billed as costing 130 billion yen ($1.3 billion). The ministers updated estimate includes surrounding construction and infrastructure costs. "We need to rethink this to scale it down," he said in response to a question from a ruling party lawmaker. "Urban planning must meet peoples needs." The plans for the stadium were approved earlier this year by the city and central governments. Shimomuras remarks signal a policy change. He did not give specifics on how construction will be trimmed, but he stressed that the design concept will be keptt.dddddddddddd He also said the new stadium will still have all the basic features needed to host the Olympics. It is replacing the smaller 54,000-seat main stadium that was used for the opening and closing ceremonies of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki, a recipient of the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize, recently criticized the new stadiums size and urged that it be reworked to "a more sustainable stadium." About 100 experts, including other architects, support his view and question whether the new stadium is environmentally responsible and practical. The site sits in the middle of a downtown Tokyo park within walking distance of shopping malls, high-rise buildings, a Shinto shrine and a famous venue designed by Kenzo Tange for the 1964 Olympics. Zaha Hadid Architects office has said the venue is flexible and can be used for events beyond the Olympics, such as concerts. But it has expressed willingness to talk about design changes. Construction is scheduled to begin next year. ' ' '

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. -- The Detroit Pistons are a much-improved team after Joe Dumars rebuilt the roster once again over the summer. That doesnt mean they are ready to knock off teams like the Oklahoma City Thunder. Detroit played the Thunder tough into the third quarter Friday night, but Oklahoma Citys superior depth took over down the stretch, especially once Andre Drummond and Josh Smith got into foul trouble. Rookie Steven Adams finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while fellow post reserve Nick Collison had nine points and four rebounds in a 119-110 victory. "We were just trying to keep it simple and try not to make mistakes," Collison said of his partnership with the New Zealander. "I thought we were really locked in defensively. It was a different situation than most nights, but our bench played really well." Thunder coach Scott Brooks thought his entire second unit played a key role in the victory. "Nick, Steven, Derek (Fisher), Jeremy (Lamb) and Reggie (Jackson) did an outstanding job," he said. "They gave us a great effort, they moved the ball and took care of it. Steven and Nick did a really great job of playing together and understanding what we needed them to do. They protected the paint and they took care of the pick-and-roll. Detroits biggest problem, though, was trying to stop Kevin Durant. Their only hope of that was Smith. He sat out large portions of the second half and Durant finished with 37 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. "We werent hitting shots and they were hurting us on the offensive glass, but it is really hard to adjust your lineup to fix those things when you are facing Kevin," said Pistons coach Maurice Cheeks, who spent the last four years as an assistant with the Thunder. "You always have to have someone on the floor that can guard him, so that limits your options when you want to change things." Smith finished with 25 points for Detroit before fouling out, while Greg Monroe (20 points, 15 rebounds) and Brandon Jennings (22 points, 11 assists) added double-doubles. "Its always tough against that team, but especially when you get into foul trouble," said Monroe, who found himself playing with Kyle Singler, Gigi Datome and Jonas Jerebko instead of Drummond and Smith. "They kept making plays, and they kept getting to the free-throw line. It is hard to win games like that." Leading by 10 early in the fourth, the Thunder struggled to put Detroit away. The Pistons got within 88-84, but didnt have an answer for Durant down the stretch. Smith committed his fifth foul trying to guard him with 5:07 left, and Durant hit both free throws to give him 30 points and move the Oklahoma City lead to 101-89. Smith fouled out moments later, and picked up a technical foul on his way off the floor. Oklahoma City threatened to break the game open in the second quarter, leading by as many as 11 as the Pistons continued to struggle to score from outside. Jennings and Monroe, though, combined for 10 points in the final two minutes of the half, pulling Detroit within 55-51. Durant and Russell Westbrook combined for 27 points in the half, while Monroe had 13 points and eight rebounds for Detroit. The Pistons went ahead on back-to-back three-point plays by Monroe and Smith midway through the third, but Smith immediately committed his fourth foul and had to join Drummond on the bench. Six straight points by Durant forced Drummond back in with four fouls, but Lambs 3-pointer at the buzzer let Oklahoma City take an 84-76 lead into the fourth. Westbrook scored 20 points despite missing 14 of his 19 field-goal attempts. NOTES: Detroit Tigers President Dave Dombrowski had one of the best seats in the house, sitting courtside just two spots away from the halfcourt line. ... Cheeks got an enthusiastic pregame welcome from the Thunder. Durant grabbed Cheeks in a playful headlock, while Thunder coach Scott Brooks and several players rushed over to embrace him. ... Durant earned a spot on the nightly blooper reels when he lost his grip on the ball while driving for a baseline dunk. As Durants empty hands came down on the basket, the ball looped over the Pistons bench and into the stands. David Amerson Jersey . The Texas Rangers right-hander will probably reconsider now. That was but a minor interruption in his command performance Friday in the British Open. Once he made a birdie, and then another, nothing could stop McIlroy. Not another collapse in the second round. Not anyone in the field. And certainly not Tiger Woods. After a bogey on his opening hole stirred memories of another "Black Friday," McIlroy looked more like the Boy Wonder who won two majors in a runaway. With three birdies in his last four holes, he posted a second straight 6-under 66 to build a four-shot lead over Dustin Johnson. McIlroy spoke of an "inner peace," and the two secret words that triggered his powerful swing and set up birdie chances on just about every hole. "People call it the zone, people call it whatever," he said. "Its just a state of mind where you think clearly. Everything seems to be on the right track. Ive always said, whenever you play this well, you always wonder how youve played so badly before. And whenever youve played so badly, you always wonder how you play so well. Im happy where my game is at the minute. And hopefully, I can just keep up the solid play for another couple of days." Woods is fortunate to even play for two more days. He started the second round only three shots behind. He finished it on the 18th hole, standing over a 6-foot birdie putt just to avoid missing back-to-back cuts for the first time in his career. Woods made the putt for a 77, matching his second-worst round as a pro in the British Open. Woods hit driver five times -- four more than he hit all week when he won at Royal Liverpool in 2006. None found the fairway. Woods was 14 shots out of the lead and still thought he had a chance, referring to Paul Lawrie making up 10 shots in one round to win at Carnoustie in 1999. That was against Jean Van de Velde. This is Rory McIlroy, who has won both his majors by eight shots. "Two 66s from Rory is a bit special, but he is just that -- he is a bit special," Graeme McDowell said. "So hes going to be tough to catch this weekend if he keeps that up." McIlroy was at 12-under 132 -- the same 36-hole score of Woods in 2006. Dustin Johnson birdied the last two holes for a 65, the low score of the week. That ordinarily would put him in the last group with McIlroy, except they will have company in a historic decision at golfs oldest championship. Because of a nasty storm approaching England, the Open will go to threesomes teeing off on both sides Saturday. Francesco Molinari (70) will joinn them.dddddddddddd He was part of a large group at 6-under 138 that included Rickie Fowler (69), Sergio Garcia (70), Charl Schwartzel (67), Louis Oosthuizen (6 and Ryan Moore (6. David Hearn (73) of Brantford, Ont., is tied for 24th at 1-under par, while Graham DeLaet (76) of Weyburn, Sask., missed the cut. Johnson had a chance at the claret jug three years ago until a 2-iron that went out-of-bounds on the 14th hole at Royal St. Georges. He also lost a three-shot lead in the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, and missed out on a playoff at Whistling Straits for grounding his club in sand at the 2010 PGA Championship. "Im glad and Im in the last group," Johnson said. "Just go out there and try to shoot a big number." Four shots can be lost quickly in any major, especially in links golf, particularly in nasty weather. McIlroy followed up a record-tying 63 at St. Andrews in 2010 with an 80 the following day. Even so, the ease with which he moved around Royal Liverpool was more frightening than any forecast. McIlroy picked up his first birdie with two putts from across the green on the par-5 fifth. But it was on the par-3 sixth, when McIlroy deposited an 8-iron to 7 feet for birdie, that he found that peace and put the pedal down on the rest of the field. He ushered the pheasant off the eighth green, regrouped and holed a 7-foot birdie putt, chipped to tap-in range on the 10th and then kept giving himself chances on all but one hole until ending with three birdies. McIlroy was in such a groove that with the wind at his back, he hit driver 396 yards on the 17th hole and pitched to 8 feet. It was only Friday -- a fantastic one, not a freaky one -- but the kid looked like he was going for a knockout. "Once I got to 7 (under), I felt like, OK, this time I feel good. I can get to 8. I can get to 8, 9, 10, 11, 12." The 17th hole is where Woods fell apart. He started double bogey-bogey and made only pars the rest of the way until his tee shot on the 17th was about 100 yards short and 50 yards wider than McIlroys drive. Hanging his head, Woods was walking down the fairway when he was told it was out of bounds. Back at the tee, he hooked that shot closer to the 16th fairway and made triple bogey. A birdie enabled him to make the cut, a small consolation considering what McIlroy is doing. "Its not a surprise. Hes done this before," Woods said. "Once he gets going, he can make a lot of birdies and he plays pretty aggressively to begin with. And when hes going, he can get it going pretty good." As for those two secret words that keep McIlroy locked into what hes doing? "Ill tell you on Sunday, hopefully," he said. ' ' '

What kind of situation were you in when the trade happened?I knew I wanted to be a Number 1 somewhere, and at the end of that season, I was going to become a UFA. So once that season was played out, I knew I was going to be on the open market. How did you hear the news? We got to Toronto and we were having a morning skate the day of the deadline, since we were playing that night. Lindy Ruff called me into his office before I got on the ice, and we started talking about what I wanted to do. Did I want to go be a Number one somewhere?I told him it was out of my control. I knew I was going to try to move on in the summer, but I wasnt going to demand a trade: I loved the group of guys and the fans. So we talked for a little bit, and then he said, “Youve been traded.”And I said, “Oh! Well, okay. Where?”He said: “Dont know yet. Still working out the details.”I dont know if there were a couple options out there, but he said, “Get your stuff at the hotel and take a car service back to Buffalo, head home and well figure it out from there.” About a half an hour later I got a call from [GM] Darcy [Regier] saying, “Youre going to Philadelphia, youll get a call from Paul Holmgren pretty soon.” He said, “Why dont you meet the team in Boston, theyre playing there in a couple days.” So I flew to Boston and met everybody there. Is it awkward joining a new team for the first time?It was very interesting. I was in an unfamiliar place, with new teammates and coaches and trainers. But I knew Robert Esche and Simon Gagne, so I went and talked to them. You find the guys youre comfortable with and you latch onto them! Did it feel like your whole life had been upended? My wife and I had two young kids, but we were prepared for it. SEATTLE -- Chad Marshall headed in a corner kick from Marco Pappa in the 84th minute Saturday night as the Seattle Sounders completed a comeback from a first-half own goal to beat the Philadelphia Union 2-1. The Sounders (6-2-1) won their MLS-leading fourth straight game, extended their unbeaten streak to five and took the overall league lead with 19 points. "I think Ill be thinking about that goal tonight," said Marshall, whose tally was his first since Sept. 14, 2013, while still with the Columbus Crew before he came to Seattle in an off-season trade. "Ive been close a couple times this year, so it was nice to get one, especially at home. And for it to be a game-winner was pretty sweet." During their five-game unbeaten streak, the Sounders have come from behind in four of them to get the result. "We said at the beginning of the season that we wanted to be a team that fought to the very end of games, and were doing that," coach Sigi Schmid said. "Coming back, we made it a little bit hard for ourselves. We had some good chances in the first half. . We didnt put those chances away." Philadelphia (1-4-5) saw its winless streak extended to eight games (0-4-4), tying a club record that was first set in 2011 and matched in 2012. Pappas corner kick from the right side floated into the penalty area just outside the 6-yard box. Marshall ran and headed it high into the net over goalkeeper Zac MacMath for his first of the year. Marshall was also on top of his game at the other end of the field, blocking several Philadelphia attempts and clearing away two that were dangerously close to the Seattle net. "Im a big guy, and Im just trying to get in their way," said the 6-foot-4 Marshall, who has played all 810 minutes this season. "I think I have a nice Adidas tattoo on my back from one of (the blocked shots)." The Union took the lead late in the 13th minute when a long free kick into the penalty area went into the Seattle net off of Brad Evans head. The own goal was the result of a free kick by the Unions Cristian Maidana about 40 yards upfield and slightly toward the right side. He drove it into the box, where teammate Maurice Edu and Seattles Evans both went up for it. The ball flew into the right side of the net and originally was credited to Edu, but was changed moments later to an own goal off of Evans. Obafemi Martins tied it for Seattle in the 61st minute, his fourth goal of the season. The Sounders created multiple opportunities to tie it before halftime, none better than Osvaldo Alonsos penalty kick early in the 40th minute after Philadelphias Amobi Okugo was called for a hand ball in the box. Alonso went toward the right post, but MacMath dived to his left and blocked it. Evans started the play that led to the tying goal when he headed a short ball into the penalty area. Martins caught up with it at the penalty spot, took it to the top of the 6-yard box and shot into a wide-open right side of the net for his fourth of the season. "Its a difficult one to take because we came in and played well in the first half and we got up a goal," Union coach John Hackworth said. "Even in the second half, we had some chances to get a second one, and we didnt put those away. They came back to get back in the game, and Chad Marshall makes a great play on a corner kick - I dont know what to say. "Once again, we kind of let ourselves down." Josh Wilson Womens Jersey . Michael Chandler vs. Eddie Alvarez (Lightweight Championship) James Lynch TSN.ca (@LynchOnSports) In one of the most anticipated rematches in MMA history, undefeated champion Chandler defends his title for the third time against former lightweight champ Alvarez. If you havent watched their first encounter, look up Bellator 58: Chandler vs. Alvarez on YouTube and youll witness one of the greatest fights in MMA history. When Chandler upset Alvarez in their first fight back in November 2011 to capture the title, he immediately became the promotions poster boy. The DREAM veteran Alvarez was pushed in the opposite direction and was told to re-enter an upcoming lightweight tournament in order to earn a rematch. Alvarez opted to compete in two super-fights instead (against Shinya Aoki and Patricky Freire) and emerged victories on both accounts. His plan was to wait until the conclusion of his contract and move on elsewhere. He had aspirations to fight in the UFC and instead of that storybook ending; he endured one of the worst legal contract battles in the sport. The 29-year old would be forced to sit out a year and in the end remained with the promotion. Thanks to a newly formed rematch clause, fans and pundits instead get to witness this epic encounter Saturday night. So who wins the fight? Despite Chandler getting the best of his foe at Bellator 58, the matchup as a whole was extremely competitive. Both fighters have knockout power and exceptional wrestling. The Alliance MMA fighter has the edge on the mat, but with 27-fights on his resume Alvarez has the clear advantage in experience. Since his win over the Blackzillians member, the 12-0 fighter has made leaps and bounds in his career. Hes finished all of his opponents since then, including lightweight tournament winner David Rickels and current welterweight finalist Rick Hawn. In addition, the former NCAA Division 1 Wrestler has the security with the promotion (signing a disclosed long-term contract) and has been more active fighting. All these factors dont bode well for Alvarez, especially with the long layoff. Expect the company man Chandler to come out with the same intensity in their first fight and land the better power shots. Hell catch the durable Alvarez sometime in the third round and slip in the submission for his 13th career victory. Chandler via third round submission Jordan Cieciwa – TSN 1290 Host This promises to be one of the best fights on paper in any fight organization this year. The UFC got lucky that Sanchez vs. Melendez was an epic battle; this rematch looks to be something special. If you have not been following these two competitors you have been missing something. Alvarez vs. Chandler in Bellator 58 was one of those fights that needs to be watched to be believed. Both fighters have the talent to go to the top of their division in any league. Alvarez has proved his talent with wins over Shinya Aoki (Watch his career highlights) and Patricky Freire. Both wins were first round KOs. At 9-1 in his last 10 fights (Chandler was the loss) Alvarez has finished eight of those fights. Thats impressive. At 24-3, its no wonder the UFC wanted him. That legal battle left Alvarez hungry and he better be for this fight. Across the cage is the man who took his title. Chandler has competed in half the fights, but at 12-0 is no rookie. Chandler has finished his last four fights. The last time these two met, Chandler sunk in a rear naked choke in the championship rounds. Now, I see redemption on the horizon for Alvarez. With no competition he has been in the gym with the Blackzillians, perfecting his technique. It has been almost exactly one year since Alvarez had a fight. I expect him to be healthy, and razor sharp. Alvarez via fourth round KO Pat Curran vs. Daniel Straus (Featherweight Championship) Lynch 26-year old featherweight champion Curran faces off with Season 6 tournament winner Strauss as part of three rematches on this main card. Their first encounter came back in 2009 for the XFO promotion, where Curran won via knockout in the second round. Both fighters have evolved their games since then and currently between the two of them, ride an 11-fight unbeaten streak. The Team Curran fighter has looked spectacular since dropping back to featherweight in 2011 and has dispatched the likes of Marlon Sandro, Joe Warren and Patricio Freire. Looking for his seventh straight win, “Paddy Mike” is in for a competitive matchup against the Team Vision product Straus. The 29-year old has had quite the battle both inside and outside of the cage, with injuries and legal trouble back in March which has delayed this fight from happening. Now ready and with the opportunity to compete on the promotions biggest event to date, Straus hopes his wrestling will be enough to outpoint the current champ. Physically both fighters are similar with Curran having a slight height and reach advantage. Both have over 20-fights on their resume, but Curran has a win over Patricio Freire, a man who handed Straus his last loss. While no doubt the Ohio native is durable, Curran is better in every aspect of this fight. Should the 2011 featherweight summer series winner stick to his game plan, this is his fight to lose. Expect Curran to overwhelm Straus as the fight goes on, and catch him late in the fight, for his 20th career victory. Curran via fourth round knockout JC If you listen to the "Weigh In" on TSN 1290 where Lynch and I sound off with our friend and Co-Host Marvyn Timog, youll know about our respect for the very underrated Pat Curran. He has heavy hands and a ton of talent. Hes the champ for a reason; hes really good at fist fighting. Curran has strung together six wins, while Daniel Straus is on his own five fight win streak. This is a rematch as it was a loss for Straus back in 2009 for the XFO organization. That, coupled with some "out of the ring" legal issues, Im not sure we get to see Straus in the perfect head space for a fight with someone who has been getting better and better as time passes. Pat Curran haas looked as sharp as ever in his last six fights.dddddddddddd His hands are heavy, and his talent to hit the button is unquestioned. Win number 20 for Pat Curran will come with a booming KO. Watch this one; its going to be the fight your friends talk about. Curran via third round knockout Muhammad “King Mo” Lawal vs. Emanuel Newton (Interim Light Heavyweight Championship) Lynch Another heated rematch fills out the main card, this time in the light heavyweight division as former MFC champion Newton battles former Strikeforce champion Lawal. This past February at Bellator 90, we saw one of the biggest upsets in the promotions history Newton landed a first round, spinning back-fist knockout on Lawal to advance to the Season 8 tournament final. With “King Mo” winning this past summers light heavyweight tournament and current Bellator 205lb Attila Vegh apparently sidelined due to injury, this rematch was made possible. Since the loss, the always charismatic Lawal is on a two-fight win streak, finishing both Seth Petruzelli and Jacob Noe. If the 2007 Pan American gold medalist wants to emerge victorious, hell need to neutralize the standup of the “Hardcore Kid” and not become over confident like he was in their first fight. For Newton, hell need to unload on his standup and try to turn this into a dogfight. A glaring difference between these two fighters is experience, with Newton having 29-fights on his resume compared to Lawals 14. With whats at stake for the 32-year old, expect Lawal to play it safe and try to outwrestle his opponent on route to a unanimous decision victory. Lawal via unanimous decision JC I had the pleasure of watching King Mo train right after he was cleared from an ACL repair. That same ACL that had him sidelined for a long time, thanks to a subsequent infection. I got to see King Mo up at Reign MMA working with a ton of top talent. No doubt, he is a talented wrestler. The Kings striking is good, but its not great. Enter the Interim Champ, Emanuel Newton. He is much sharper in the standup world. Newton is still training with Reign MMA, and his sparring days are over at Kings MMA. Rafael Cordero turns out top prospects at Kings MMA, and thats exactly why Newton has the belt right now. The last go between these two had Newton landing a back fist for the KO. I dont think this one will end that fast, but I do expect the striking to be the factor in this that gets the win. I expect Newton to confuse Lawal, and stay on the outside and avoid takedowns. You have to beat the champion, if this goes to decision, it will stay with Newton Newton via unanimous decision. Joe Riggs vs. Mike Bronzoulis (Fight Master Final) Lynch In a matchup that was slated to take place back at Bellator 98 in September, Team Jackson fighter Riggs returns from injury to battle Team Couture fighter Bronzoulis. The 31-year old Riggs had a well-documented fall from grace, from fighting for the UFC welterweight title against Matt Hughes in 2005 to battling an opiate addiction which lead to him bouncing around from promotion to promotion. A win for the Strikeforce veteran on Saturday would not only earn him a spot in the upcoming welterweight tournament, but also resurgence in his career. Heading into this bout, “Diesel” is riding five-fight win streak and hopes to add “Fight Master Champion” to his resume. Meanwhile the former Legacy FC welterweight champion Bronzoulis looked dominant during his tenure on the Fight Master reality series, defeating Chris Lozano and Eric Bradley to earn his spot in the final. Riggs has a significant advantage in experience, with 54 fights in his career (compared to Bronzoulis 21) and has fought the likes of Matt Hughes, Nick Diaz, Chris Lytle and Phil Baroni. The 34-year old “Greek” has finished 12 of his 15 opponents, and will no doubt make this a competitive matchup. Because these fighters are on the biggest card in Bellator history and with Riggs having a vast amount of experience, this should be his fight to lose. Expect The MMA Lab fighter to play it smart throughout the three round affairs and earn a unanimous decision victory. Riggs via unanimous decision JC Who hasnt Joe Riggs fought? With 39 wins, this guy has seen it all. At 31 years-old, Riggs has a lot of time left on the clock. That clock has had some rough times on it. Riggs has lost a lot of key fights, had some personal problems and has seen time in almost every single organization out there. He is a fighter who needs to start winning again. As he takes to the cage, his opponent will be very ready. Mike Bronzoulis has put together two wins in a row, and is making his debut for Bellator. That means he is going to do everything he can to impress. Neither of these fighters possesses a distinct advantage in striking or wrestling. This may be one of those typical brawl matches, Riggs is known for mixing it up and putting on a good show. I think the fans are in for a great fight to start the night of Rematches up. Riggs via unanimous decision Mike Richman vs. Akop Stepanyan Lynch A pair of exciting featherweights clash to open up the main card as former Marine Richman battles Taekwondo black belt Stepanyan. Richman is coming off a hard fought loss to Frodo Khasbulaev at Bellator 95 in the Season 8 featherweight tournament final. Prior to the loss, “The Marine” was on a 6-1 run, including wins over Canadian Chris Horodecki and Alexandre Bezerra. Looking to earn his spot in the upcoming featherweight tournament, the 28-year old understands the importance of a win over his Russian- Armenian foe. The 27-year old Stepanyan also had a disappointing outing in his last fight, in an upset loss to Justin Wilcox at Bellator 99. Losing of three of his last four contests, should he not come out on top Saturday, hell likely be released from the promotion. Expect that to happen, with Richman using his superior standup and wrestling over the course of three rounds to earn the decision nod. Richman via unanimous decision JC As usual Im going against Lynch and picking Stepanyan to win the fight. He hasnt looked impressive since signing with Bellator, but that will change on Saturday as hes going to show the form that lead him to an impressive 12-3 record while he was competing in his native Russia. Richman was knocked out in his last fight and I expect that to happen again here. Stepanyan via second round knockout Undercard Picks: Lynch: Etim, Souza, Guymon, Halsey, Juarez, J.Smith, Luciano JC: Etim, Souza, Guymon, Halsey, Williams, J.Smith, Camacho Also be sure to tune into the “Weigh-In” on TSN Radio 1290 Winnipeg every Saturday as myself, Jordan and “Big Marv” Timog go toe to toe discussing the hottest topics in MMA. COLUMBUS, Ohio - Columbus Crew midfielder Bernardo Anor said his first goal off a set piece was one that had been run over and over again in practice. His second wasnt the kind that can be duplicated in training. Anors brilliant 35-yard strike at the end of the first half proved to be the difference in Columbus 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union Saturday in the Crews home opener. "Thats what the games all about," he said of the score that gave him his first multi-goal game of his career. "Its something you dont practice very often. I was fortunate to score the goal." Anor previously had six goals in 45 games, including four in 20 games last season. Columbus won the first two games of the season for the first time in its 19-year history while the Union fell to 1-1-1. Leonardo Fernandes scored in the 62nd minute for Philadelphia to cut the deficit, but the first-half struggles were too much to overcome and Columbus goalkeeper Steve Clark made late saves on Fernandes and Jack McInerney. "The team last year might have crumbled a bit," Union goalkeeper Zac McMath said. "We came back and deserved a tie, if not a win." Anor gave the Crew a 2-0 lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time. The goal was set up when Wil Trapp created a turnover at midfield and poked the ball ahead to Anor for the quick strike. "Our philosophy is to try and win the ball back as soon as possible," Trapp said. "I stepped into the lane and Bernardo had a beautiful strike. I was lucky to get an assist. He was the one that did all the work." Columbus used its first corner kick to take the lead. Federico Higuain whipped the ball from the right to Anor, who was unmarked at the edge of the goal box. Anor had waited for several of his teammates to make runs through the box to draw attention. Anor was the trailer and Higuain laced a perfect ball that Anor headed down into the goal. "We lost our man," Union coach John Hackworth said. "We should have had an easy clearance on the goal, too. Neither one of those should have happened." Eric Reid Jersey . Reassurance came from Paul Tesori, his caddie and close friend whose newborn son is in intensive care in a Florida hospital. "Paul sent me a text this morning, just told me he loved me and wanted to go out and fight as hard as I would any other day," Simpson said Sunday after doing just that. Joe Montana Jersey . Rebecca Johnston, Natalie Spooner and Vicki Bendus scored for Canada, which is playing this tournament without star forward Hayley Wickenheiser and five other veterans. Canada scored two goals in 1:34 in the first period and wound up outshooting Finland 39-23. "We were a little soft," said forward Meghan Agosta-Marciano, who assisted on Spooners goal. "We need to be able to chip the puck a little more, come out of the zone together and come with speed, and thats something that we kind of lacked a bit tonight. Thats not the best hockey that were going to be playing this tournament." Coach Dan Church praised his teams adjustments in the third period but said the consistency needs to be better. "Finlands a tough team to play against because they clog the neutral zone and theyre very good at their neutral-zone forecheck," he said. "We didnt make an adjustment in the second period, but I thought the third period we did a good job." Finlands only goal came in the third period, when Tea Villila scored on the fifth of six power plays to make it 3-1. Canada took seven minor penalties but Johnstons goal, from Haley Irwin and Brianne Jenner, came on the power play. Goaltender Charline Labonte stopped 22 of the 23 shots she faced. "Charline had a solid game in net for us, turned aside a bunch of shots and was cconsistent back there," Church said.dddddddddddd. In addition to Wickenheiser, Canada is without experienced forwards Caroline Ouellette and Marie-Philip Poulin and defencemen Meaghan Mikkelson, Lauriane Rougeau and Laura Fortino, who are getting a rest. Church wants to win the Four Nations Cup, but this tournament is also about evaluating players for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. "Its a prestigious tournament, and its an important step on the road to Sochi. But there are things that we need to do to build our team," he said. "We brought 21 players here that are going to play all four games, and thatll be an important process for us selecting our team down the road, leaving some players behind in Calgary." Those in Lake Placid, N.Y., have their sights on winning now and worrying about Sochi later. "When I think Canada I think winning every single opportunity we have in any game or any tournament," Agosta-Marciano said. "Its great tournament to kind of see where everybodys at, and at the end of the day we want to come out of this on top." Canadas next game is Wednesday night against the United States, which it has already defeated twice recently. This is a renewal of that rivalry, even with some of Canadas best players not participating. "I think itll be good to see some of our younger players, having some of our more experienced veterans at home in Calgary, its an opportunity for them to step up," Church said. ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- Mike Trout homered twice and drove in four runs, rookie Matt Shoemaker remained unbeaten as a starter, and the Los Angeles Angels defeated the Cleveland Indians 9-3 on Tuesday night. Trouts three-run homer in the fifth broke a 3-all tie and capped a four-run inning. He added a leadoff homer in the seventh. The two-time All-Star was 3 for 5, extending his hitting streak to 12 games, and has reached base safely in 35 of his last 36 contests. Shoemaker (4-1) allowed two runs in a career-high eight innings. The right-hander is 4-0 in seven major-league starts, six this season. The right-hander, who lost in a relief appearance in April, recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts. Josh Tomlin (4-4) gave up six runs in 5 1-3 innings. The loss ended Clevelands 10-game home winning streak. The game was delayed by rain for 11 minutes before the bottom of the ninth. Indians left fielder Michael Brantley was scratched from the lineup, and had tests on the head and neck injuries he sustained Monday. Trout capped an eight-pitch at-bat against Tomlin in the fifth by lining a 2-2 delivery over the wall in right. He homered into the bleachers in left field in the seventh off Mark Lowe for his 16th of the season and the second multi-homer game of his career. The first came on Aug. 30, 2011, against Seattle. Trout is batting .410 (34 for 83) over his last 22 games and has raised his average from .264 to .311. Howie Kendrick, who had three hits and drove in two runs, and Kole Calhoun, who was 4 for 5 with two RBIs, hit solo homers for the Angels. Lonnie Chisenhall, who entered the game in an 0-for-13 slump, hit a solo homer in the fourth that put Cleveland ahead 2-1. Shoemaker made the Angels opening day roster and was optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake on May 25 after going 2-0 in three starts. He was recalled three days later and has won two of three starts since. Shoemaker allowed five hits and walked one. Shortstop Asdrubal Cabreras team-high 13th error helped Los Angeles take the lead. Following David Freeses leadoff single, Raul Ibanez hit a slow roller toward second base. Cabrera, playing to the right side of the bag, tried to tag Freese but dropped the ball, leaving runners at first and second. Calhouns one-out single tied the game. Albert Pujols RBI groundout in the first gave Los Angeles the lead. David Murphys ground ball tied the game in the second. Chisenhalls two-out homer in the fourth hit off the wall of the Indians bullpen in centre field. The left-handed batter, who is hitting .368, cooled off after going 5 for 5 with three homers and nine RBIs against Texas on June 9, going hitless in four straight games. Brantley was injured trying to break up a double play sliding into second base in the third inning Monday. He passed a concussion test Monday, but still felt discomfort before Tuesdays game. Hes batting .323 and leads the team with 11 homers and 46 RBIs. Fans paraded around the field with their dogs before the game in the Indians annual Puppypalooza promotion. The Indians announced approximately 300 dogs were in attendance. NOTES: Josh Hamilton was the DH for Los Angeles while Ibanez played left field. ... The Indians signed OF Bradley Zimmer, their No. 1 draft pick and the 21st overall selection. He will report to Class A Mahoning Valley. ... EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Adrian Peterson takes a look around the league and sees big money flying everywhere. Arizona gave receiver Larry Fitzgerald US$50 million guaranteed. Cleveland gave left tackle Joe Thomas $44 million guaranteed. Carolina running back DeAngelo Williams got $21 million. All he does is sit back and smile as the price tag for elite talent in the league goes up and up and up. There is no bitterness at the Vikings for not locking him up yet as he prepares to start the final year of his rookie contract. There is no jealousy at his superstar brethren who are getting paid handsomely now that the new collective bargaining agreement has taken effect. There is only the self-assured comfort that comes from knowing his big deal will come soon enough, either in Minnesota or somewhere else. "Yeah, Im sure a lot of people are excited to see that, eight years, 120, 50 guaranteed," Peterson said of Fitzgeralds deal. "Im a fan of him. Im happy that he got that deal done." Peterson is making $10.7 million in the final year of his rookie contract, so the sense of urgency to get a new deal isnt as pressing for him as it is for others who are making far less, like Tennessees Chris Johnson, who is holding out this preseason. Johnson is due to make $1.065 million in 2011, though the Titans have pledged to make him the highest-paid running back in the NFL. Even though Peterson and Johnson have traded barbs over the last few years over who is the leagues best running back, Peterson said he hopes to see the speedy Johnson get the money he deserves. "Hey, take care of him. He deserves to be taken care of," Peterson said. "Their owners saying they are going to make him the highest paid back has nothing to do with me, as far as (do) I feel bad? Nah, pay the guy." Vikings coach Leslie Frazier has said on multiple occasions that keeping No. 28 in purple is one of the teams top priorities. Petersons agent Ben Dogra has had conversations with the Vikings about an extension, but nothing appears to be imminent on that front. The fact remains that Petersons dynamic first four seasons in the league have earned him every incentive from his rookie contract, making him the highest-paid running back in the NFL this season. If a deal doesnt get done this season, the Vikings could put the franchise tag on him, which would push his two-year compensation for 2011 and 12 to around $26 million. That would put his career earnings at more than $40 million, and thats not counting the numerous lucrative endorsement deals hes signed over the last few years. Then he would be a free agent at 28-years-old and, assuming he continues the record-setting pace he has set in his first four seasons in the league, will get the big long-term deal that everyone is talking about right now. The more pivotal question is not how much money will he make, but rather who will be the one to cut the check? Peterson is making enough money through contracts and endorsements to allow him to consider the direction of the franchise more than the size of the check, much like cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who took a little less money than he was making with the Raiders to sign with the contenders in Philadelphia. The Vikings are two years removed from the NFC title game and coming off of a disastrous 6-10 season with a leaky offensive line. They added quarterback Donovan McNabb and still have receiver Percy Harvin and tight end Visanthe Shiancoe in the mix, but the supporting cast gets a little thin after that. "I feel like we have the right pieces around. We have talent at quarterback," Peterson said. "Im all right at the running back position. And weve got Percy Harvin, Shiancoe, and the defence is always stable. So weve got a lot of good pieces in place to, you know, each week just mould more together to win that championship." The way this year goes could play a big role in Petersons desire to work out a long-term deal to stay here. A good start could assuage any concerns about the franchise going in the wrong direction. A slow one? That could cause him to think long and hard about his prospects of winning a championship here. He has been asked several times during training camp if he wants to stay with the Vikings and has side-stepped the question like a would-be tackler in the flats. "Ive been thinking about this season because this is whats present now," Peterson said when asked about the future in Minnesota. "As of now, we have what it takes to be able to accomplish the ultimate goal." The biggest risk mentioned in not getting a deal done now is injury. Peterson plays arguably the most brutal position in the game, one that is known for its short shelf life. Taking out an insurance policy could help with that, and Peterson isnt buying that he will hit the wall at 30 like many of the games great running backs have. Hes proven to be a different kind of running back ever since he entered the league in 2007. The way he sees it, why should that change in four years? "Its just all about how they make a label out and thats what people go by because thats what theyre used to hearing," Peterson said. "Five, six years, thats what expectations for running backs are. "Who knows that? Who does the science to come up with that? Each individual is different. But you know, thats just how this world, we operate. You say something and then everybody look at it and thats what it is. No matter what the person is, but I disagree." Brandon Boykin Jersey . Riley Cooper (ankle), Jeremy Maclin (hamstring) and rookie Jordan Matthews should all line up when head coach Chip Kelly goes to a three wide receiver set when the Eagles host the Pittsburgh Steelers in the third preseason game Thursday night. Cooper, last years surprise in Kellys system when he caught 47 passes for 835 yards and eight touchdowns, did not play in the first two preseason games because of the ankle injury suffered during the first week of training camp. Maclin, who missed all of 2013 with a torn ACL, has been bothered by a hamstring injury and sat out last Fridays game in New England. McCoy, who became the first Eagle since Steve van Buren in 1949 to lead the league in rushing, with 1,607 yards last year, missed a few days of practice with what was termed "turf toe". According to Kelly, all three should be on the field Thursday night. "(McCoy), I dont think hell ever play again," Kelly joked when asked about the status of his running back. "No, hes fine. He was out here. Its not that serous, not that big of a deal." McCoy has carried seven times in the first two games for just 19 yards. He should see about one half of action against the Steelers. "We havent gone over all of that yet," Kelly said of how long the starters will play. "We have two more days to figure that out." While Cooper and Maclin are back to boost quarterback Nick Foles and the Eagles passing game, two other backup wide receivers will miss Thursdays game. Veteran Brad Smith, who was getting plenty of time with the twwo starters out, is nursing a groin injury and rookie Josh Huff could be out a few more weeks with a sprained shoulder.dddddddddddd. "Brad has a groin, I dont know if hes going to go," Kelly said. "But its not an extended thing. If he doesnt play Thursday, I expect him to be back at practice, Saturday." There was some good news for Huff, another draft pick who has provided moments of excitement in the early going of camp. "Nothing is broken, he just has to rehab the shoulder," Kelly said. "No surgery, its just a rehab situation." Having the trio of Cooper, Maclin and Matthews, the highly-touted second-round pick from Vanderbilt, together will give Kelly a chance to see what he has going into the season. And give Foles the receivers he expects to have during the regular season. "Its tough for Nick," Cooper said. "Every time he looks up theres a different guy out there, because someone is down. We all have to be out there. It helps the team and it helps Nick. "Its a big deal, yeah. In the NFL you need to have timing, you need to have accuracy. When this guy is out and then this guy is out, its tough to build on that." Thats especially true for Maclin, who hadnt lined up with Foles, since the quarterbacks rookie year and that was in Andy Reids West Coast offence. "It feels good to have us all on the field playing and playing together," Maclin said. "We all have our own relationship with Nick, and its building by being out there together." NOTES: CB Nolan Carroll, the free agent signing from Miami who played well early, but missed the first two games with a hamstring injury, is also expected to return Thursday. . Backup R B Chris Polk is not expected to play with a hamstring injury. ' ' '

CHICAGO -- Having been burned by D.J. Augustin the previous night, the Boston Celtics clamped down on the Bulls guard in the second game of their home-and-home series. Boston succeeded in limiting Augustin to four points on 1-of-9 shooting, but that didnt affect the final outcome. Mike Dunleavy had 22 points on 7-for-12 shooting and Augustin handed out 11 assists to help five Bulls score in double figures for a 94-80 win over the Celtics on Monday night. "From the beginning of the game I knew they were going to do that, adjust to me," Augustin said. "I had to do some other things and find my teammates and they did a great job getting open." Joakim Noah added 19 points, 11 rebounds and five assists, Jimmy Butler scored 18 points, Carlos Boozer 16 and Taj Gibson had 14 points and 11 rebounds for Chicago, which pulled away with a 13-0 run at the start of the fourth quarter. The Bulls (42-32) moved into a tie with the Toronto Raptors -- who lost at Miami -- for third place in the Eastern Conference. "I think its very important," Dunleavy said of the third seed. "We want to get as high as we can. Not only with home-court advantage and avoiding the first seed in the second round, if were fortunate enough to advance. We just want to get as high as we can." Chicago swept the home-and-home series with the Celtics after winning 107-102 in Boston on Sunday. The Celtics have lost 10 straight on the road to drop to 8-28 away from home. Their last road win was Feb. 10 at Milwaukee. Brandon Bass and Jerryd Bayless scored 18 points apiece for the Celtics. Rajon Rondo didnt play Monday after getting 17 points and 11 assists Sunday. He is still working his way back to full strength following reconstructive knee surgery and doesnt play in back-to-back games. "It wasnt just the fourth (quarter)," Boston coach Brad Stevens said. "The first five minutes of the third and the fourth we went into a drought. We looked heavy-legged the whole second half. "Thats no excuse because they played last night, too." The game was tight entering the fourth, but the Bulls went on a quick 9-0 run for an 80-70 lead with 9 1/2 minutes to play before Stevens called time out. The stoppage didnt curb the Bulls momentum. Gibson scored on vicious dunk off a nice feed from Butler to make it 82-70 and Noah capped the run of 13 straight with a post move for an 84-70 lead. Noah had six points during the spurt, including an 18-foot jumper before Bostons timeout. "Theyre a good team," Bayless said. "We dont have a lot of room for error. We made a couple of bad plays in a row and theyre too good and they got on the break and hit their shots. We have to pull it together for longer stretches of time." Although Augustin didnt score in the fourth, he played a big role by dishing out six assists as Boston overplayed him. "Thats the advantage we have with the finishing group," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "The job of those guys is to read what the defence is doing." The Bulls are 10 games over .500 for the first time this season. "I think were playing pretty good basketball, but I think we can play better," Noah said. "I think the mindset is good. Everybody is working, everybody is in the weight room, everybody is trying to find ways to get better." NOTES: Home-and-home series on consecutive games used to be a regular occurrence in the NBA, but are rare these days. "Its the same plays, so theres a tendency for the players to know whats coming," Thibodeau said. "I think its good preparation for whats coming down the road." ... Since he wasnt playing because of the back-to-back, Rondo spent part of the game working on the TV broadcast back to Boston. ... Peria Jerry Youth Jersey . -- One of the byproducts of quarterback Matt McGloins rise to the top of Oaklands depth chart last week was the production of rookie tight end Mychal Rivera.TORONTO - Once he got going, no one could calm Jonas Valanciunas down, despite Kyle Lowrys best efforts. As Valanciunas was whistled for a rare technical toward the end of the third quarter - a result of waving his hand at an official after being called for a foul - Lowry pulled the Raptors sophomore aside, corralling him by his jersey and patting him on the back. "Youve got to be smart in certain situations," Lowry told the young centre. "I just tried to say look, you cant waste your money." "Yeah, he was trying to calm me down," Valanciunas said of the conversation with his point guard, speaking with a mischievous look on his face following the Raptors 98-91 win over the Cavaliers. "That technical foul cost me, so I feel bad now." He shouldnt. The tech will cost Valanciunas a small fraction of his next paycheque but the unbridled emotion he played with in the second half of Fridays game was the driving force of Torontos rapid turnaround. Valanciunas, like the rest of his team, got off to an ugly start. The Raptors were fortunate to be down by only five going into the break, scoring just 39 points in the first half and shooting 33 per cent from the field. For the third straight game coming out of the All-Star break, Valanciunas got a quick hook in the first quarter. The seven-footer has been strangely quiet of late, averaging under six points in four games entering Fridays contest. His minutes have been down, as hes battled growing pains on the defensive end. After being sent to the bench midway through the opening quarter, he sat for around 12 minutes of game time before re-entering. Somewhere, somehow, someone lit a fire under the sophomore and not only did it spark him, it ignited the whole team. Valanciunas was a possessed man coming out of the halftime break. He was aggressive on defence, manic on the boards and dominant down low. He ran the floor with a purpose, worked to establish position, then demanded the ball. As he turned to face up Clevelands Tyler Zeller midway through the third, he pump faked - not once, but twice - took the contact and drained the jumper. Before completing the three-point play, he pumped his fist in the air and yelled out to the crowd, or the Cavs, or his teammates, or whoever was listening. His face was as red as the logo at centre court. He meant business. "Hes going to have ups and downs but tonight he was intense," Lowry said of Valanciunas, who had 10 points and four rebounds in the third quarter, finishing the game with 18 points and eight boards. "He really kind of carried us with his intensity and his passion and fire tonight." The 21-year-olds inspired play lifted the Raptors in what turned out to be a game-deciding third quarter. Toronto scored 37 points in the frame - two fewer than its first-half total - and shot 70 per centt, turning a five-point deficit at intermission into an 11-point advantage going into the fourth.dddddddddddd. "Hes our enforcer in the paint," said Amir Johnson, who returned to the starting lineup Friday after coming off the bench in his two previous outings, nursing an ankle injury. "When he gets going, everybody else plays good and that just gets everybody open shots when hes scoring in the paint." Johnson also came to life in the second half, the two bigs even hooked up on an alley-oop lob - from Johnson to Valanciunas - late in game. "We had to give our bigs a wakeup call," Dwane Casey said. "They turned it around in the second half. We reminded them, theres more to the game than the offensive end." "You can do a lot of different things other than make shots," he continued, "and I thought the second half, Amir Johnson and JV worked at it and got it done." Although Valanciunas helped turn the game, the best Raptor on the night - from start to finish - was fellow sophomore Terrence Ross, hands down. Ross scored a team-high 20 points, shooting 9-for-18, but his most important contribution was on the defensive end, where he went toe-to-toe with All-Star Game MVP Kyrie Irving. When the game began, Ross was assigned to check former Raptor Jarrett Jack while Lowry defended Irving. Early in the first quarter, there was a switch and Ross ended up on the Cavs point guard and leading scorer. It stuck for the rest of the evening, and Ross did not disappoint. The Raptors forward used his length and athleticism to frustrate Irving, forcing him to launch tough perimeter jumpers, keeping him out of the paint and holding him to 3-of-16 shooting. "He can score in a lot of different ways [and] get his teammates involved," Ross said of Irving, who ended up with 17 points and nine assists for Cleveland. "So if you slow him down, you slow the team down." "He had to chase [Irving] everywhere," Johnson said of Ross. "He chased him off screens, he didnt quit on plays and thats how you have to play a guy like that. [Irvings] so crafty and hes always moving so you just have to keep a body on him and stay in front of him. [Ross] did a great job." It was Canada Basketball Night at the Air Canada Centre Friday, as local product and first overall pick Anthony Bennett made his NBA debut in Toronto. Bennett, who continues to improve after a slow start to the season, knocked down his first two shots and finished with nine points in 15 minute of action while fellow Canadian Tristan Thompson scored 13 to go along with nine boards. In snapping Clevelands six-game winning streak, the Raptors picked up their 30th win of the campaign, doing so in just 55 games. It took them 78 contests to reach the 30-win mark a year ago. ' ' '

The Los Angeles Kings jumped out to a 3-0 first-period lead and the Chicago Blackhawks couldnt catch them, with the Kings taking a 5-2 decision in Game Four to take a 3-1 lead in the series. Kings D Jake Muzzin scored the first of two power play goals for the Kings. Playing more than 21 minutes per game in the playoffs, Muzzin now has 11 points, placing him third among defencemen in the postseason. Not bad for a guy who didnt hook on with an NHL club until the Kings signed him during his overage junior season in Sault Ste. Marie. Four years later, Muzzin is on the top defence pairing for a team closing in on the Western Conference title. Muzzin is paired with Drew Doughty, who also had a goal and an assist in Game Four (though his goal appeared to be deflected in by Dwight King) and leads defencemen with 14 points in the playoffs. Game Four was so well in hand for the Kings that they could limit Doughtys ice time; 23:55 was Doughtys lowest ice time since Game Two of the playoffs (after which he complained about his lack of ice time). For once, the Blackhawks didnt get burned by the line of Jeff Carter, Tanner Pearson and Tyler Toffoli, until Pearson scored into an empty net, though Pearson had a team-high seven shot attempts and tied Carter with a team-leading four shots on goal. The bad news for Chicago is that the Kings other top scorers got on track. Marian Gaborik scored a goal while Anze Kopitar and Justin Williams each picked up a couple of assists; Kopitar extending his playoff scoring lead with 22 points and Gaborik leads all playoff goal-scorers, with 10. In their ultimately fruitless attempt to come back, the Blackhawks chances were created by their power forwards. Marian Hossa, Bryan Bickell and Brandon Sadd had nine, eight and seven shot attempts, respectively, to lead the Blackhawks. Saad and Bickell scored Chicagos goals. Chicagos leaders, C Jonathan Toews and RW Patrick Kane, skated together for most of the game, as the Blackhawks tried to shake up lines and it didnt really work. While both assisted on Bickells third-period goal, Toews didnt register a shot on goal (though, immediately preceding Bickells goal, Doughty basically blocked a Toews shot in the crease to prevent a goal), the second time in the series Toews has been held without a shot on goal. The Blackhawks need their big guns to be firing, but they also need G Corey Crawford to perform better. After allowing four goals on 20 shots in Game Four, Crawford has stopped 69 of 82 shots (.841 SV%) in the last three games. The goals against arent all on Crawford, to be sure but, no matter how you slice it, .841 isnt good enough to win. Blackhawks C Michal Handzus played a game-low 4:28, not seeing the ice beyond six minutes into the second period. This isnt the first time in the playoffs that a team, on the verge of elimination, has looked like they were on the way out, and thats the situation in which the Blackhawks find themselves now. More than 90% of teams with a three-game-to-one lead in an NHL playoff series go on to win, so the Blackhawks have a steep hill to climb. But, they can look across the ice and take heart, knowing that the Kings had to overcome a three-games-to-none deficit in Round One against San Jose to get turned loose on this playoff run. Right now, the Kings look invincible, but hockey is a funny game sometimes and if the Blackhawks are better on home ice in Game Five, maybe they still have a way to dig out of this hole. HOUSTON -- Houston defensive end Antonio Smith apologized Monday for using the word "spying" about New England, but didnt exactly back down from the accusations he made after the Texans loss to the Patriots. On Sunday after Houstons 34-31 loss, Smith told reporters that the Texans had some new wrinkles in their defence and it was "miraculous" how the Patriots changed their offence to key on the defence. He said then: "Either teams are spying on us or scouting us. I dont know what it is." On Monday, he said that he thought reporters in Houston knew him well enough to know that he could be joking and still be curious about something like this at the same time. "Im sorry I said the word spying because of a prior engagement of them being caught spying before," he said. The NFL fined New England coach Bill Belichick $500,000 and the team $250,000 and took away a first-round pick in the 2008 draft for videotaping New York Jets signals during a game on Sept. 9, 2007. Belichick said he thought that was allowed and apologized for what he said was a mistake in his interpretation of the rule prohibiting it. Belichick was asked on a conference call Monday morning if he saw Smiths comments. "Yeah, I saw them," he said. "I dont have any comment on them. I think thats a league matter." Houston coach Gary Kubiak also was questioned about what Smith said and refused to address them directly. "I have the utmost respect for their organization, their players, their coaches, their head coach and the standard that theyve been setting for a long, long time in this league," he said. "So ... they did a great job yesterday and have been doing it a long time." The loss extended Houstons franchise-record skid to 10 games. The Texans were up 17-7 at halftime before New England rallied for the win. Smith said Monday that he was surprised his comments caused such a stir and wondered why no one had a sense of humour about what he said. "Though it may be something I was curious about that kind of didnt seem right," he said. "Like how all of a sudden the change here? It wasnt a serious matter to where I was thinking: Aw man, theyre spying on us. Theyre cheating. Things like that to the point where it gets to a big story about me accusing them of cheating. Its me being me, being funny." Houston will try to end its skid Thursday night at Jacksonville. Montell Owens Jesey . LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater will forgo his senior season with the No. 18 Cardinals and enter the NFL draft. Projected as a first-round selection and possibly the first QB taken this spring, Bridgewater completed 71 per cent of passes for 3,970 yards and a school-record 31 touchdowns this season, including a career-best 447 yards with three TDs in Saturdays 36-9 rout of Miami in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Bridgewater said in a release that the decision "was extremely difficult," but added that attending Louisville "was one of the best decisions I could have ever made." With Bridgewater starting, the Cardinals won 27 games and tied a school record with this years 12-1 finish. Despite some lacklustre efforts following a loss to Central Florida, Louisville entered the bowl game with the nations 18th-ranked passing game at nearly 303 yards per game and 34th in total offence at 453.1. Bridgewaters career highlight was last years 33-23 Sugar Bowl upset of Florida in which the 6-foot-3, 196-pound Miami native earned MVP honours after passing for 266 yards and two TDs. His decision wasnt surprising considering he began the season as a possible Heisman Trophy candidate before those prospects dropped with the October loss to UCF that also ended the Cardinals chances of winning the inaugural American Athletic Conference championship. Howeveer, Bridgewaters pro stock remained steady and even gained steam down the stretch after he rallied Louisville past Cincinnati with a gutsy 14-yard scramble on fourth-and-12 and an off-balance 22-yard TD pass to Damian Copeland in the fourth quarter.dddddddddddd The Cardinals won 31-24 in overtime to clinch the Russell Athletic bowl bid. Bridgewater consistently remained coy about his future, even after leading the Cardinals to their second consecutive bowl win. Late in the season, Louisville coach Charlie Strong even suggested the possibility that his star quarterback might return for his final year. But after talking with his family and Louisvilles coaching staff, Bridgewater chose the option that was long expected. He leaves as Louisvilles No. 3 career passer with 9,817 yards and 72 TDs against 24 interceptions. His 68.3 per cent completion rate is a school record. "These past three years have allowed me to mature as a person and leave the university as better person and with my degree in hand, which was one of my goals," Bridgewater said in the statement. "I will cherish every moment on the field and off the field, and every bond that I built. I will forever represent the university with the utmost pride and respect." Waiting in the wings to succeed Bridgewater are redshirt freshman Will Gardner, freshman Kyle Bolin, and junior Brett Nelson. ' ' '

DETROIT -- Prosecutors said Wednesday they plan to review a request for charges against a 28-year-old Detroit Tigers player following a sexual assault complaint. The Wayne County prosecutors office has received a warrant request from police and a charging decision isnt expected this week. The prosecutors office didnt release the players name, but said the alleged assault took place March 30 at MotorCity Casino Hotel in Detroit. In April, The Associated Press and others reported 28-year-old Tigers right-hander Evan Reed was facing a sexual assault complaint. "A thorough review of all of the evidence must be conducted before a decision can be made," the prosecutors office said in a statement. "No further information about the case will be released until a charging decision is made." A statement Wednesday from David Gorcyca and Ben M. Gonek, Reeds attorneys, said Reed has fully co-operated with the Detroit Police Department since the investigation began, and Reed also voluntarily gave a statement to investigators. "Evan, through his lawyers, in a rare move also provided the Detroit Police Department with witness statements, a test result, and a supplemental witness statement which details the alleged complainants actions after the incident," they said. In the statement, Gorcyca and Gonek said they are confident the case "will be closed" after a review from prosecutors. The Tigers were in Cleveland on Wednesday to wrap up a series against the Indians before returning to Detroit. Reed, a reliever, is 0-1 with a 3.0 ERA this season. Hes pitched in 17 games. He was 0-1 with a 4.24 ERA in 16 games last year as a rookie. Logan Paulsen Jersey . Andre Roberts Jersey . Louis Cardinals 5-3 on Friday night and tightened the top of the NL Central. It was the summation of the fifth career hat trick and fifth career 30-goal season for Phil Kessel – he also added an assist – whose scorching play continues to lead a burning Leafs run, one that reached nine wins in 11 games at the ACC on Saturday night. “Its fun to watch,” Nazem Kadri said of Kessels play after a 6-3 win over Ottawa, the 23-year-old catching fire himself in recent weeks. “Hes making plays out there left, right and centre so well just keep letting him do what he does.” Kessel has mesmerized with his electric production amid the Leafs charge – which has them three points back of Tampa for second in the Atlantic division – totaling 10 goals and 23 points in the past 12 games. He has vaulted into fourth in league scoring with 61 points, now trailing only Alex Ovechkin with 30 goals – the fourth time hes reached that mark in five seasons with the Leafs, the lockout-shortened 48-game season the lone exception. The 26-year-old, set to join Team USA for the second time at the upcoming Olympics in Sochi, appears well on his way to eclipsing a career-high of 37 markers and could very well challenge the 40-goal plateau for the first time. “Its hard to really put a limit on him,” said Bozak, who had a goal and an assist and now has 29 points in 33 games this season. “He can get so streaky. Three goals tonight, who knows next game. You never know with him. I definitely wouldnt doubt him getting 40 goals by any means.” Kessel is on pace for 43 goals and 88 points, both of which would prove career-highs. Toronto is 16-3-3 when he scores this season and 26-6-4 when he records a point. Five Points 1. Kessel vs. Ottawa With their third win in three tries against the Senators this season, the Leafs have now beaten their Ontario rival nine times in the past 10 meetings. Much of that success is owed to their leading scorer, who toys with Ottawa like no other. Kessel has 18 goals and 35 points versus the Senators in 25 games as a Leaf and more career goals (25) and points (46) against them than any other team. 2. Kessels All-Around Game Though his performance is aptly judged on the level of offence he produces, Kessels all-around efforts and competitiveness have notably risen during the Leafs sizzling run, which sees them with 66 points on the year. Pointing first to the deadly shot and skating ability of his teammate, Joffrey Lupul observed that “you know when [Kessels] really playing well because of how hes competing on pucks down-low in the offensive end – turning his back, protecting the puck – and hes been doing that for a while now. It makes him really effective down there.” Added Randy Carlyle: “Hes been classified as this one type of player and we think that hes got more of an all-around ability too because he can distribute the puck, he can pass the puck, he can find people, he can do a lot more things than just shoot.” Kessel has 13 assists during the 12-game run. 3. Secondary Hot Streak Kadris hot streak also kept marching on against the Senators. The 23-year-old set up Lupul for the Leafs second goal – which erased a 2-0 deficit – infuriating the Ottawa bench as he did so. Aggressive on the forecheck, Kadri connected with rookie defender Cody Ceci from behind before digging out the puck and feeding his teammate, who was all alone parked in front. The visitors believed a penalty should have been called on the hit from behind and the goal waved off. “I think he turned just to try and give himself a little more room,” Kadri said of Ceci. “At that point Im just fully committed to hit and I just finished my check. To be honest, I did let up a little bit and the puck was laying there and I just put it in front.dddddddddddd” Kadri, who played over 23 minutes (nearing a season-high), also added an empty-netter and has 14 points in the past nine games. He is up to 40 points in 53 games this season. 4. Back on Track In a stretch of 20 games between November and December, Joffrey Lupul failed to find the score-sheet 16 times, producing points (10) in just four games. Bouncing between left and right wing, Lupul played with a rotating cast of centres that included everyone from Jay McClement to James van Riemsdyk to Peter Holland and Trevor Smith. “You would like to stay on one line the entire year because that means, for me youre staying healthy first of all, and having success with your linemates,” the 30-year-old told the Leaf Report late last month. “But weve had so many guys in and out of the lineup – myself included, Clarkson, Kulemin, Bozak, everyones been out – theres been nothing really set in stone other than Phil and JVR together, thats been pretty much the only thing.” Entrenched with the same linemates – Nik Kulemin and Nazem Kadri – for the past eight games, while back at his preferred left wing, Lupul is finding a more consistent offensive touch. He scored his 17th goal against the Senators and now has eight points in the past eight games, totaling 33 points in 48 games this season. “Hes a different player on the left side,” said Carlyle. 5. Riellys Improvement Questioned on where he had improved most from the start of his first full NHL training camp, 19-year-old Morgan Rielly pointed to the defensive end. “Id like to think there are a few things Ive improved on,” he told the Leaf Report. “I would say playing defence in my own end. I think thats an area of the game that as a team weve been trying to improve. I think as we kept practicing that and keep talking about it I think that Ive been able to improve at that. But I think I can keep working at it.” More specifically, Rielly said hes improved in his ability to close out on opposing forwards, sealing them against the glass and thus more quickly erasing offensive opportunities. “Just trying to end plays,” he said. “I think that in the past I was just trying to keep them outside. I was a bit too cautious. I think Ill get stronger at just closing in on them and just trying to end the play.” Now paired with Tim Gleason, Riellys defensive assignments are getting tougher and included Ottawa captain Jason Spezza on Saturday evening. Stats-Pack 23 – Points for Phil Kessel in the past 12 games, totaling 10 goals in that span. 14 – Points in the past nine games for Nazem Kadri. 8 – Times in the past nine games that Kadri has registered at least a point. 6 – Consecutive wins for the Leafs at home, the first time theyve accomplished that feat since Mar.6 – Apr. 7, 2007 (9-game streak). 26 – Power-play goals for the Leafs at home this season, most in the NHL. 16-3-3 – Leafs record this season when Kessel scores a goal. 18 – Goals for Kessel in 25 career games as a Leaf against Ottawa. 3:43 – Ice-time for Greg McKegg in his NHL debut. 10-10 – Toronto penalty kill in the past three games. Special Teams Capsule PP: 1-5Season: 22.7% (3rd) PK: 2-2Season: 78% (28th) Quote of the Night I “Its a new one for me. To me, its crazy. Four points and he talks.” -Tyler Bozak, upon seeing the media-relunctant Phil Kessel speaking with reporters. With John Tavares second period knee injury against the Latvians Wednesday, he wasnt just lost for the rest of the Olympics, but also the rest of the NHL season. The blow for the New York Islanders was softened a little by the fact their season is already all but over, sitting 12 points out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with a 22-30-8 record. But imagine if the Islanders were in playoff contention, losing one of the best players in the league. Islanders general manager Garth Snow was none too happy about losing his superstar centre at an international competition. Speaking to Newsday on Thursday, Snow chastised the IIHF and IOC for wanting all the benefits of NHLers for nothing in return and even suggesting the organizations reimburse Islanders season ticket holders. Tavares injury, and Snows subsequent reaction – a sentiment likely shared by GMs around the NHL – may be enough for the league to halt their participation in the Olympics. In light of this and other injuries suffered in Sochi, is it time for the NHL to stop sending their players to the Winter Olympics? The 23-year-old Canadians season isnt the only casualty of the Winter Games, as the Florida Panthers have lost promising rookie Alexander Barkov to a knee injury playing for Finland, and veteran forward Thomas Kopecky to a concussion playing for Slovakia. And while Pavel Datsyuk played in every Russian game at the Olympics, an argument could be made that were it not for the Olympics in his home country, the 35-year-old would be resting his troublesome knee ahead of the Detroit Red Wings playoff push. The solution could come in the reincarnation of the World Cup of Hockey, to be played in late summer before the NHL season begins. While injuries would be as unavoidable then as they are now in the Olympics, players would be coming in fresher and would have more time to heal before training camps open in the fall. Theres nothing quite as momentous as playing for your country in the Olympics, as Steven Stamkos showed doing everything he could to get healthy in time for this years tournament, but a World Cup could be a compromise that keeps every party involved relatively happy. And for hockey nuts worried about the void if the NHL pulls out of the Olympics, ideas such as making the World Juniors, an increasingly popular tournament around the world, an Olympic event every fourth year may be enough to appease them. Should the NHL stop sending their players to the Winter Olympics? Youve heard what weve had to say, now its your turn. As always, its Your! Call. cheap jerseys . St. Louis doesnt need the lure of the playoffs as an excuse to get stingy. The space-eating Blues have been doing it all year, and it showed in a taut 1-0 road win on Sunday. Frustrating the NHLs best power play during a pivotal two-man disadvantage at the start of the second period, the Blues continued their mastery of the Eastern Conference by beating the Penguins the way theyve beaten so many teams this season. The room to manoeuvr that Pittsburgh stars Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin usually enjoy disappeared as St. Louis clogged passing lanes and dictated play defensively. David Backes deflected a slap shot by Alexander Steen past Marc-Andre Fleury midway through the third period for the games only goal and Brian Elliott stopped 33 shots to pick up his fourth shutout of the season as the Blues moved three points clear of Chicago in the race for the best record in the Western Conference. "When youre in a tight game like that against a good team, the guys kind of rose up to the challenge and I tried to make a couple saves and get the rebounds out of the zone and they did the rest," Elliott said. Fleury made 26 saves for the Penguins but watched Backes deflection carom off his glove and into the net just after a penalty against Malkin expired. "I just saw the guy raise his stick for the shot," Fleury said. "There were a bunch of people in front. I tried to cover some net but I didnt see it go in. St. Louis bounced back from a one-sided loss at Philadelphia on Saturday to improve the leagues best road record to 23-11-3. Pittsburghs top-ranked power play went 0-for-5 a day after scoring three times in a win over Tampa Bay. When Elliott wasnt getting a pad on the puck, his teammates were. The Blues blocked 25 shots, with the Penguins frustration growing at every turn as the Blues improved to 20-5-2 against the Eastern Conference, the best interconference record in the league. Pittsburgh had a 5-on-3 power play at the beginning of the second period for more than 90 seconds without bbeing able to sneak something by Elliott.ddddddddddddMost of the time the Penguins struggled generating a shot as the Blues effectively disrupted Pittsburghs rhythm. "We just kind of cleared lanes and I was able to see the ones they took," Elliott said. "Whenever guys are moving big guys out of the way, it just helps and you saw guys get in front of shots, block them and clear them down." Malkin was called for high-sticking 9:17 into the third and he was barely out of the box and back on the ice when Backes gave St. Louis the lead. The puck cycled to the point and Alexander Steen fired a slap shot that Backes found a way to nick as it sailed by. His 24th goal of the year proved more than enough. Elliott wobbled several times — including at least two saves where it appeared the puck was creeping to the goal line when the whistle blew — but didnt collapse. When the clock expired after one last clear up the zone, the game ended with the unusual sight of Malkin trying to mix it up with Alex Pietrangelo. Bylsma said coming into an important weekend he wanted his team to get used to playing tightly contested, low-scoring games. Pittsburgh survived one on Saturday, rallying for a 4-3 overtime win against the streaking Lightning that featured 40 minutes of clamp-down hockey and 22 minutes of frantic play. The Blues, who have positioned themselves into contenders in the West by sealing off the net, would not be lulled into the kind of end-to-end stretches that allow the Penguins to run free. "We still want to do a better job in these games and win them," Crosby said. "We have done a pretty good job of being patient when weve been in these kinds of games." At times, Bylsma wonders if his club was too patient, particularly in the first period. "The first 20 minutes we backed them off with speed," he said. "We had some opportunities and needed to have more of a drive and shoot mentality." NOTES: The Penguins played with seven defencemen instead of six, a move Bylsma said was needed in a game where he knew open ice would be at a premium. ... KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- Sporting Kansas City has acquired midfielder Bobby Convey from the San Jose Earthquakes in exchange for an international roster slot for 2012. The 28-year-old Convey spent the last three seasons in San Jose, where he was an MLS all-star in 2010 and 2011. He has 11 goals and 30 assists in 164 appearances in Major League Soccer. He was the youngest player ever to sign with Major League Soccer prior to the 2000 season, joining D.C. United at the age of 16. In 2006, he was on the 23-man squad that travelled to Germany for the 2006 World Cup. Will Sutton Womens Jersey . Domenik Hixon Womens Jersey .Com Tour. The former Canadian Amateur champion, who made his rookie year as a professional a memorable one, has had a long wait to get back on the course and after last season, hes anxious to play.TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie, Pierre LeBrun and Darren Dreger gathered for the latest installment of Insider Trading and the topics discussed were what a rising salary cap means for PK Subbans contract negotiations, the coaching situation with the New York Islanders, the Buffalo Sabres search for a new general manager, what stories emerged from Tuesdays Board of Governors meetings and Jakob Chychrun, the son of former Flyers defenceman Jeff Chychrun. Q: With the cap going over $71 million and climbing even higher, what does this mean to P.K. Subban and his contract talks? LeBrun: It could mean a lot. In many ways, he could be the poster child for young, star free agents and future negotiations. For guys like Alex Pietrangelo and Erik Karlsson, they signed long term deals because they were looking for security and didnt know where the salary cap was headed. Well, P.K. Subban and his advisors from Newport Sports know where its going and its going way up, so the debate for Subban is, do I sign an eight-year deal like a lot of people are expecting me to, but then, the salary cap might be at $100 million by the end of the eight-year deal, maybe Im better off taking a shorter term deal, three or four years. Of course, the Montreal Canadiens will be looking for some long-term security themselves, so a big decision for Subban because the cap is going way up. McKenzie: The players and agents are wondering whos going to be the guy who breaks the bank; whos going to be the guy who gets closer to the 20 per cent maximum salary thats allowed. If the salary cap is $75 million or $80 million in a couple of years, thats potentially $15-16 million a year. What player might command that kind of money? Well, lets have a look at the guys who are coming up to unrestricted free agency. Jonathan Toews and Patrick Kane have a year left on their deals after this year. They can start negotiating in the summer. You can easily justify doubling your current $6.3 million salary if youre Toews or Kane. Steven Stamkos, a free agent in 2016, could he be the guy who breaks the bank? We saw the redefining of the goaltender market last week when Henrik Lundqvist brought the maximum goaltender salary from $7 million to $8.5 million. Agents and players believe its only a matter of time until some star player gets $12, $13 million or $14 million under this new salary cap environment. Q: Are the reeling New York Islanders going to be looking for a new head coach? Dreger: They might, but in the moment, the New York Islanders are willing to be patient, so there is no imminent coach firing. Jack Capuano has the full confidence of his general manager. What the team needs is more offence from its star players and thats aside from the top line. Garth Snow is also looking for a top-pairing defenceman. Hes taking more of the responsibility than putting it on the coaches. Q: What is the status of the Buffalo Sabres search for a new general manager? McKenzie: The list is getting longer, rather than shorter. The expectation is that the Buffalo Sabres will certainly take until the New Year and maybe beyond that, closer to the Olympics, before a general manager is named. Our sense is that there is somewhere between six and 10 names that Sabress president Pat LaFontaine is looking at and that hes probably spoken to two-thirds or three-quarters of that group, but hes continuing to look and theres one name thats popping into the mix lately.dddddddddddd The Buffalo Sabres have asked for permission from the Los Angeles Kings to talk to director of amateur scouting Mike Futa, but no word yet on whether or not that permission has been granted. Q: What stories emerged from Tuesdays Board of Governors meeting, including the push for the next World Cup of Hockey? Dreger: I believe Hockey Canada will reach out, if they havent already, to the Players Association. The NHL is waiting for some gesture from the Players Association on the scenarios that have been discussed over multiple meetings about the next World Cup. Hockey Canada would prefer that the next World Cup be in February 2016. Its unlikely that the owners will shut down part of the season again. Theyd prefer September of 2015. Theres still a lot of work to do, but the league is getting antsy. They want an answer in the next couple of months. LeBrun: Brendan Shanahan addressed the Board of Governors on Tuesday, talking about league discipline. One of the things he brought up was Matt Cooke and how he became a rehabilitated player in part because of the help he got from the Pittsburgh Penguins organization. The message from Shanahan was look at what that coaching staff did for Matt Cooke. Hed like to see more teams around the league adopt that model when it comes to helping out their own players when it comes to league discipline issues. Dreger: This was very much a business meeting for the governors of the NHL and good news for the small market owners, as they learned that they can earn upwards of $45 million. With the cap floor going to $52 million in 2014-15, those full revenue-sharing teams will get upwards of $20 million in national rights money, theyll get $20 million in revenue sharing and, perhaps, an extra $5 million in escrow. So thats $45 million of $52 million to get to the floor. LeBrun: The story that generated the most buzz today was something that wasnt even talked about within the walls of the Board of Governors meeting - expansion, but because Gary Bettman was questioned about expansion in the media, it was really his demeanour, more than what he actually said, that generated the buzz. He openly talked about receiving interest from other markets. In the past, he would just shut that down and not even broach it. It gives us the impression that expansion is on the horizon. One governor said, nevermind the next couple of years, he believes in the next year, expansion talk will heat up seriously. Q: Whats the next step for Jakob Chychrun, son of former Philadelphia Flyer Jeff Chychrun? McKenzie: Jakob Chychrun is a 62", 195-pound, 15-year-old defenceman who plays for the Toronto Canadiens of the Greater Toronto Hockey League. What makes him special is that if he decides to go the OHL route, hes expected to be the first-overall pick. While he never applied for exceptional status, even before that, they did make an exception at the Under-17 World Challenge this Christmas. He will be the first minor hockey player, not playing in the OHL, to go up and play on the Ontario under-17 team. ' ' '

WETASKIWIN, Alberta – Andrew Ranger has plenty of mastery on road-courses. The two-time champion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 proved once again he can figure it out on an oval, too. He showed that Friday night as he picked up the win in the Alberta Has Energy 300 in the inaugural event at Edmonton International Raceway. Ranger tied the series all-time record with his 19th career win, and won back-to-back races for the first time since August 2009 following his victory on the road course at Circuit ICAR in Quebec last week. It was also his first oval win since 2009, and fourth overall. "At the beginning of the day we didnt have a really good car, so we improved lap after lap," Ranger said "During the race my car was really fantastic." The race was stretched to 316 laps around the quarter-mile bullring following a late caution that involved early race leader Alex Tagliani, and required Ranger, who took the lead on Lap 269, to hold off LP Dumoulin and Jason Hathaway on the final restart. "The pass with Alex [Tagliani] was a little bit tough because it was almost one [racing] line here," Ranger said. "He did a little mistake and I was able to take him in [Turn] 3." Dumoulin and Hathaway waged a battle throughout the last two laps of the race for second and Dumoulin came out ahead, followed by Hathaway, J.R. Fitzpatrick and D.J. Kennington. Joey McColm, Larry Jackson, Scott Steckly, rookie Stefan Rzadzinski and Noel Dowler completed the top 10. Fitzpatrick, Kennington and Steckly were all two laps down at different points during the race and rallied back for top-10 finishes. Tagliani, who won the pole position for the race earlier in the day, finished 13th. He led a career-high 268 laps. Fitzpatrick and Dumoulin are now tied for the season points lead after four races at 162 apiece while Rangers back-to-back wins have bumped him up to third, 12 tallies behind the co-leaders. Dumoulin has finished top-five in all four races this year, two more than any other driver. "Thats our first podium on an oval, and the guys have been working really hard," Dumoulin said after finishing second. "We were within sight for the last run. I knew being in second was not a good spot for the restart at the end, obviously we had to fight for that spot, but we kept our head up and made it happen." Ranger now shares the Canadian Tire Series career wins record with Kennington. That accomplishment came one week after he tied Fitzpatrick for the series all-time poles mark at 14. The race was slowed by 11 cautions for 94 laps, including two red flags. Dumoulin and Hathaway waged a battle throughout the last two laps of the race for second and Dumoulin came out ahead, followed by Hathaway, J.R. MIAMI -- Here they are again, back on the brink of a championship. It slipped away from the San Antonio Spurs last year, but it would take something special -- historic, actually -- to stop them now. The Miami Heat would have to make the biggest comeback in NBA Finals history. "Theyre the two-time champs, theyre a great team, and there is still one more game," Spurs guard Tony Parker said. "We have to win one more game." Kawhi Leonard had 20 points and 14 rebounds, and the Spurs routed the Heat again, winning 107-86 on Thursday night to open a commanding 3-1 lead. The Spurs can win their fifth NBA championship with a victory at home in Game 5 on Sunday and avenge their seven-game loss to Miami last year. They have three chances, and the way theyre dominating the Heat, they might need just one. "Im pleased that they performed as well as they did while weve been in Miami, and thats about as far as it goes," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "Now weve got to go back home and play as well or better." LeBron James had 28 points and eight rebounds, but Dwyane Wade was just 1 of 10 through three quarters and finished with 10 points. "They smashed us," James said. "Two straight home games got off to awful starts. They came in and were much better than us in these last two games. Its just that simple." No team has overcome a 3-1 deficit in the finals, and the way the Heat were outclassed twice on their home floor makes it hard to imagine the two-time champions being the first. "We put ourselves in a position where it is about making history," James added. Parker added 19 points, and Tim Duncan had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spurs, who shot 57 per cent from the field and are hitting 54 per cent in the series. The Spurs lost twice in Miami to end last years finals, their only defeat in the championship round. They won their two games in South Florida this time by a combined 40 points. San Antonios surprising dominance has Miami on its heels, and unless Miami can figure things out quickly, the Heats two-year championship reign will come to an abrupt end. If this was the last home game of the season in Miami, it looked and sounded nothing like the ones to end the last two years, which featured confetti falling and trophies raised. This one had the unfamiliar sound of boos late in the first half and a chant of "Go Spurs Go!" with under 3 minutes left from the San Antonio fans who remained long after many of Miamis had bolted. A Heat win Sunday would force a Game 6 in Miami Tuesday. The Heat had followed their last 13 post-season losses with a victory, but now at the end of a fourth straight season that has gone the distance, they might be out of gas. Miami seemed to lack the energy -- or maybe effort -- to defend San Antonios precision ball movement for the full 24 seconds, and time after time the Spurs ended up with a shot from somebody who didnt have a defender nearby. Not quite as sharp as when they shot a finals-record 75.8 per cent in the first half Tuesday night, the Spurs were still plenty good enough to open another huge lead by halftime, and they withstood every attempt Miami made to make a run. "We were expecting a reaction from them but we were ready for it, so we just did the same thing," Spurs forward Boris Diaw said. The Spurs knew their defence had to be better, realizing their once-in-a-lifetime, 19-for-21 start in Tuesdays 111-92 Game 3 victory covered the fact that they allowed Miami to make more than 50 per cent in the game. They held Miami to 35 per cent in the first half. "They played great and I can honestly say I dont think any of us were expecting this type of performance," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. San Antonio blew the game open late in the second quarter with seven straight points, capped by Leonards soaring follow dunk that made it 55-33. James, who battled cramps in Game 1, left the court and briefly returned to the locker room midway through the first quarter Thursday. But he had 10 quick points in the third quarter to bring Miami within 13, but San Antonio pushed it to 81-57 after three and never looked back. Notes: Under Popovich, the Spurs have won 15 of the 18 best-of-seven series in which they led 2-1. ... NEW ORLEANS -- The Eastern Conference finally stopped Kevin Durant and Blake Griffin -- then stopped its losing streak at the NBA All-Star game. Kyrie Irving had 31 points and 14 assists and was voted the games MVP, Carmelo Anthony made an All-Star record eight 3-pointers and scored 30 points, and the East rallied for a 163-155 victory over the West on Sunday night. "Its a great honour," Irving said. "We had a few MVPs. Everyone out here today is an MVP." Durant and Griffin each finished with 38 points, four shy of Wilt Chamberlains All-Star game record. But the East scored the final 10 points to pull out a game it trailed by 18. Irving scored 15 points in the fourth quarter as the East ended a three-game losing streak. LeBron James had 22 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. "The superstars of our league were just telling us to compete on every play," Irving said. "Trying to play as much defence as possible. You know, sticking to our game plan. We had a game plan going in and we executed." Griffin shot 19 of 23, while Durant finished with 10 rebounds and six assists. But the West was shut out after Durants 3-pointer gave it a 155-153 lead with 1:59 left. Indianas Paul George made three free throws, Anthony nailed his final 3-pointer, and James scored to make it 161-155. George closed it out with two more free throws and finished with 18 points. The game that usually doesnt get tight until the final minutes was close throughout the fourth quarter, neither team leading by more than four until the final minute. Chris Paul had 11 points and 13 assists, and first-time All-Star Stephen Curry had 12 points and 11 assists for the West. But the best point guard on the floor was Irving, who shot 14 of 17 and helped the East ring up 87 points in the second half after it surrendered a record 89 in the first. In a colorful tribute to New Orleans, players wore sneakers and socks that ranged from green and blue to orange and purple, making the game look like a Mardi Gras parade. The parade was one of layups and dunks for the West, which scored 44 points in the first quarter and 45 in the second. Griffin had 18 points in the first quarter and Durant had 22 at halftime, both two shy of records set by Glen Rice in 1997. And there was plenty of music, the rosters and starting lineups introduced around a concert by Pharrell Williams, who was joined by his own All-Stars in Nelly, Busta Rhymes, Sean "Diddy" Combs and Snoop Dogg. Magic Johnson led a band, too, encouraging the All-Stars to join him in singing "Happy Birthday" after the first quarter to Hall of Famer Bill Russell, the NBAs greatest champion who was celebrating his 80th. The All-Stars played better than they sang. The East finished with 61 per cent shooting, needing all sorts of offence after it simply couldnt defend Durant and Griffin. Durant made 6 3-pointers and easily blew past the 28.8 points he had been averaging in All-Star games, which was an NBA record. Outside of the ugly sleeved jerseys, it was a good look for the NBAs midseason showcase, bouncing back strongly from an even All-Star Saturday night. The new format of the slam dunk contest Saturday wasnt a hit, but every night is a dunk contest when Griffin is involved. The guy who once jumped over a car to win a slam dunk contest had eight slams in the first 11 minutes, the backboard often barely finished shaking from the last one when he threw down the next. The West began to open a gap in the second quarter behind a hometown star and a former one -- Anthony Davis of the Pelicans for former New Orleans guard Paul. Durant made a 3-pointer with 26 seconds left to make it 89-76 at the break, one point better than he and the West had two years ago in Orlando. Durant and Griffin each had 30 points by the end of the third quarter, but the East trimmed what was a West 18-point lead to 126-123 after three. DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors made his first All-Star game appearance, and had eight points in his 15 minutes of playing time for the East. D.J. Williams Jersey . Matt Slauson Womens Jersey . -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson is listed as probable to return to the lineup Sunday against the New Orleans Saints after missing the past three games with a high ankle sprain.EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants are not only back in the playoff hunt with a four-game winning streak, theyre calling the plays that get them those wins. Thats exactly what Jason Pierre-Paul did against the Green Bay Packers on Sunday. With the Giants clinging to a 20-13 lead early in the fourth quarter and the Packers about to start a series at their 30, Pierre-Paul said in the huddle he was going to pick a pass and score. Pierre-Paul hadnt seen the Packers formation and he hadnt been listening to coach Mike McCarthy talk to Scott Tolzien on the sideline. He just knew, and he was right. Pierre-Paul scored on a spectacular, leaping 24-yard fourth-quarter interception return and the resurgent Giants won 27-13 over the slumping and injured-riddled Packers (5-5). "I have never seen anything like it before in my life," fellow defensive end Justin Tuck said. "We were literally in a TV timeout and he said, Im going to pick this." Tuck said Pierre-Paul made the call before the Giants had even called a defence. "If you look at my reaction to him picking it, I was in awe because he had just called it before it happened," Tuck said. "He called it before seeing the formation, so I dont know if it was Voodoo. I dont know." Pierre-Paul, questionable because of a shoulder injury against Oakland that limited him to one day of practice, said he had a feeling. "I knew I could deliver that play, that significant play, and I did," Pierre-Paul said. "It changed the game." Tolzien, starting his first NFL game, took the blame. "Thats on me giving their team a freebie," said Tolzien, who finished 24 of 34 for 339 yards and three interceptions. "We had a chance at that point. That kills ya. It was a game-changer. You see the arms up in the air and you cant throw it." Eli Manning threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Rueben Randle, and Brandon Jacobs added a 1-yard run as the Giants handed the Packers their third straight loss, their longest skid since a five-game losing streak near the end of 2008. "Its not good," Packers linebacker Clay Matthews said. " Its definitely new territory. Its tough, because you go 10-5, 10-6, 15-1. You lose three, it doesnt feel good. But right now were just not playing very good ball. Were 5-5 right now, so weve just got to move forward with the guys we have and play better.ddddddddddddquot; Two of the three losses have come with 2011 NFL MVP Rodgers sidelined with a broken left collarbone. The Giants are heading the other way. Their winning streak follows a 0-6 start and it improbably has moved them within 1 1/2 games of first-place Philadelphia (6-5) in the weak NFC East. They are a game behind second-place and idle Dallas (5-5), which will play here next Sunday. "Weve kept the dream alive and got to the game next week," centre Jim Cordle said. "But there is still a long way to go." The Packers, who got a 1-yard TD run by Eddie Lacy and two field goals by Mason Crosby, including a 57-yarder, fell a game behind Chicago and Detroit in the NFC North. The Giants never trailed, but they never put the Packers away until the interception by Pierre-Paul. New York had the better of the play in the first half, holding the ball for almost 20 minutes. The Giants jumped to a 10-0 lead on Mannings 26-yard touchdown pass to Randle and Josh Browns 40-yard field goal. The touchdown reception was Randles sixth in the last six games, and he set it up with a 32-yard punt return. Manning finished 25 of 35 for 279 yards and an interception. A 30-yard pass to Victor Cruz, who had eight catches for 110 yards, and a 5-yard run by Jacobs on a fourth-and-1 at the Packers 36 set up the field goal. Tolzien threw passes of 25 yards to Jordy Nelson and 45 to James Jones on consecutive plays to set up a 24-yard field goal by Crosby on the next series. Taking over at the Green Bay 37 with no timeouts, Tolzien hit on two passes, setting up Crosby for a 57-yard field goal on the final play. It was a yard shy of his Packers record and it was the longest against the Giants. NOTES: Brett Conway of Washington kicked a 55-yard against New York in 2001. ...
