Smiths longtime representative Derrick Fox told The Associated Press on Wednesday that Smith "is not going to play for the Panthers next year, I know that. I just dont know when that transaction is going to take place." Fox said the Panthers have been trying to trade Smith, but expects he will ultimately be released. He said the Panthers have not asked Smith to restructure his current contract which calls for him to make $7 million under this years salary cap. Regardless of whether the Panthers cut Smith or keep him, the club will have to pay him $3 million this season as part of the three-year contract extension he signed in 2012. Smiths current contract runs through 2016. Smith took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon, writing "God has a plan... sometimes it just hurts (to) find out what it is." "I will always be a Carolina panther No contract can ever change that CLT is my home and will always be my home... I love you .panthernation." Smith also wrote: "But I still have a lil bit of football left in me.... .agent89 Out." Fox said Smith, a 13-year NFL veteran, would have preferred to finish his career with Carolina, the team that drafted him in the third round in 2001. Fox said the 34-year-old Smith was "disappointed and surprised" when Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman talked about the receivers future in uncertain terms at the NFL Scouting Combines last month. "Where we are disappointed is the fact he signed an extension to stay loyal to the club and complete his career as a Panther," Fox said. "That is why we did the long-term team deal. Now we are at a crossroads where the Panthers dont want him anymore." Gettleman did not return phone calls seeking comment. Shortly after the Scouting Combine, Smith met with Gettleman at Panthers headquarrters, but Fox said the receiver left without a clear, defined role in terms of his future with the team.dddddddddddd Fox said Smith diligently rehabbed an injured knee leading up to the teams divisional play game against the San Francisco 49ers with loyalty to the team in mind, thinking his long-term future was in Carolina. Smith had four catches for 74 yards and a touchdown in Carolinas 23-10 loss. "He spent 12 hours a day working with (trainer) Ryan Vermillion to get ready for that game," Fox said. "His goal has always been to stay a Panther." Smith is Carolinas all-time leading receiver with 836 receptions for 12,197 yards and 67 touchdowns receiving. Smith is 19th all-time in NFL history in yards receiving and 25th in receptions. Smith had 64 receptions for 746 yards and four touchdowns last season helping the Panthers go 12-4 in the regular season and capture the NFC South championship. Fox said Smith plans to continue his playing career in the NFL when the Panthers cut ties. "At 34, they could have kept him and run him in the slot," Fox said. "Steve wants to play in the slot. But he cant play the slot with the current roster, and he hasnt been able to play in the slot with the rosters in the past." Fox said hes not sure why the Panthers havent released Smith. He said he will be ready when that time arrives. "Its my responsibility to find the best place for him to utilize his skills and passion for the game," Fox said. If the Panthers release Smith he will count $5 million under this years cap. The Panthers could designate him for a June 1 release which would allow them to split that money over the next two seasons. NOTES: Panthers restricted free agent cornerback James Dockery announced on Twitter he has re-signed with the team. "Blessed! Cant be happier to be signing back with the (at)Panthers cant wait to get back with our team," Dockery said. The team has yet to announce the move. ' ' '

Pumping tires became a trending topic involving goalies Roberto Luongo and Tim Thomas at the 2011 Stanley Cup Final between the Boston Bruins and Vancouver Canucks. For the first time since that matchup, the two goalies face each other tonight as the Canucks host Thomas new team, the Florida Panthers. Going into Game 6, Luongo had an infamous rant in which he used the term to describe the praise he was showing Thomas in the media, but complained about not receiving the same from his Bruins goaltender. "I never did have any animosity toward him. I wasnt thinking about him. I was thinking about doing my job," Thomas told the Vancouver Sun on Monday. The series went seven games and Thomass 37 saves outdid Luongos 17 to a 4-0 championship clinching win at Rogers Arena. The Canucks are in danger of posting their longest losing streak in nearly five years, so now seems like a good time for a visit from the Panthers. The Canucks try to avoid a fifth straight defeat overall and just their second at home all-time against the Panthers. Vancouver has been held to a single goal during each game of its current 0-3-1 slide. That includes a setback in the first two of a six-game homestand, with the Canucks losing an overtime decision to the San Jose Sharks on Thursday prior to Sundays 2-1 loss to the Dallas Stars. Roberto Luongo had 21 saves and Henrik Sedin got the Canucks onto the board just over three minutes into the third period. Sedin, though, also had a potential game-tying goal on the power play waived off near the midway point of the second period when it was ruled twin brother Daniel Sedin made incidental contract with Dallas netminder Kari Lehtonen. Though Canucks head coach John Tortorella said afterwards that no one play costs a team a game, it was a sequence he would have liked to have been reviewed. "Its a big play in the game. I think we need to get the call right. If you can review that, I think you get the call right. But its unreviewable," said Tortorella, who said he did not get an explanation of the call. "All the crap we review, and they dont review an important thing like that. I just think that needs to change. Its the wrong call." That leaves the Canucks in danger of their longest losing streak since an 0-5-3 skid from Jan. 9-31, 2009. That makes this visit from the Panthers well timed. Florida has not won in Vancouver since its inaugural 1993-94 season, going 0-5-1 with five ties since. The Canucks are also 8-1-1 with a pair of ties in their previous 12 meetings with the Panthers overall, though Florida did snap a three-game series losing streak with a 2-1 win at home in the most recent encounter on Jan. 9, 2012. Luongo is 4-1-1 with a 1.79 goals against average in six career games versus the Panthers, who he played with for five seasons before getting traded to Vancouver ahead of the 2006-07 campaign. The Panthers are looking to get rolling under interim head coach Peter Horachek, having gone 2-3-0 since he replaced a fired Kevin Dineen on Nov. 8. Florida defeated the Colorado Avalanche 4-1 on Saturday, its second win in three games following an 0-5-4 slide and first on the road since its season- opener in Dallas on Oct. 3. The club had gone 0-8-1 on the road following that victory, but got a goal from Brad Boyes in the first period on Saturday, one from Brian Campbell and Tomas Kopecky in the second and a fourth from Jonathan Huberdeau in the final frame. Tim Thomas made 32 saves for his 200th career win and Tom Gilbert had three assists. "We didnt commit many turnovers and we kept the puck deep in their zone," Gilbert said. The Panthers will play the third of a five-game road trip tonight and could stay with Thomas in net. He has had success in his career versus the Canucks, going 3-1-0 with a 1.26 GAA in four regular-season meetings. He also helped the Boston Bruins knock off the Canucks in the 2011 Stanley Cup Finals, notching a pair of shutouts and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy. cheap nfl jerseys .S. -- Kelsey Rocque remains the only unbeaten womens skip at the Canadian junior curling championships. cheap jerseys from china . Clevelands most consistent player in 2013, Brantley will sign a four-year, $25 million deal once he passes a physical, says the person who spoke on condition of anonymity because the contract cant be finalized until he undergoes the medical examination. The Indians are reporting to spring training in Goodyear, Ariz., this week, and it appears theyll open camp by announcing their commitment to Brantley. The deal was first reported by Northeast Ohio Media Group. Brantley moved from centre field to left last spring when the Indians signed free agent Michael Bourn. The switch didnt rattle Brantley, who battted .dddddddddddd284 with 10 homers and 73 RBIs in 151 games. Manager Terry Francona used Brantley throughout his lineup -- he batted everywhere but ninth -- and he excelled in the field by not making an error and recording 11 assists. The Indians were scheduled to go to an arbitration hearing with Brantley on Feb. 17. Brantleys new deal locks him up through the 2017 season and the club has an $11 million option for 2018. He was at his best late last season, batting .345 with 14 RBIs in September to lead the Indians push toward a wild-card playoff spot. Brantley began his career with Cleveland as "the player to be named" in the blockbuster deal that sent pitcher CC Sabathia to Milwaukee in 2008. While first baseman Matt LaPorta didnt pan out for the Indians, Brantley has developed into one of their core players. ' ' '

SURPRISE, Ariz. - Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington finally has a contract past this season. General manager Jon Daniels said Monday that the Rangers have added a year to Washingtons contract through 2015. Washington is the teams winningest manager with 611 wins over seven seasons, and led Texas to its only two World Series appearances. The Rangers had last extended Washingtons contract in January 2012, when two years were added through 2014. Asked what took long to get this new deal done, Daniels said mostly because there was never any question about whether Washington would get an extension. Only three managers have been with their current teams longer than Washington. They are Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels, Minnesotas Ron Gardenhire and Tampa Bays Joe Maddon. cheap jerseys from china . Next season I am looking for him to come in and play a more important role. Hopefully he can be a lefty specialist." Sewitt, 23, was claiimed off waivers from the Gary SouthShore RailCats during the final week of the season last summer.dddddddddddd He didnt allow a run in four relief appearances and had four strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of work. If you take away his last two outings with Gary, Taylor had a sub-three ERA through more than 50 innings, which is pretty impressive for any pitcher in our league." VOULIAGMENI, Greece -- Greece striker Kostas Mitroglou kept his place in the countrys World Cup squad on Monday despite three forwards being dropped from the preliminary lineup. Greece coach Fernando Santos announced the final 23-man squad and said he believes the 26-year-old Mitroglou will be ready for Brazil despite his lack of game time since moving to England at the start of the year to join now-relegated Premier League side Fulham. "I wasnt 100 per cent about some of the call-ups until a few weeks ago. Mitroglou was one of those cases," Santos said. "We watched the last 30 minutes of his game, and we paid a lot of attention -- and we judged him to be ready ... were looking at playing ability and physical condition: People who are safe choices." Mitroglou joined teammates later Monday at the national teams opening training session at seaside facility near Athens. At the World Cup, Greece will face Colombia, Japan and Ivory Coast in Group C. Despite Greeces fast opponents, the Portuguese coach opted for more experienced players, including 2004 European Championship winners Costas Katsouranis and captain Giorgos Karagounis. Three strikers were dropped from preliminary lineup: Dimitris Papadopoulos of Atromitos, Stefanos Athanasiadis of PAOK and Nikolaos Karelis of Panathinaikos. Defenders Kyriakos Papadopoulos and Dimitris Siovas also failed to make the squad due to persistent injury troubles. "I was sorry not to include players that helped us in qualification, like (midfielder) Sotiris Ninis and Siovas," Santos said. "But the national team is above players and above the coach. We must use the safest choices." Santos said he had identified "strengths and weaknesses" in all three group opponents, but did not elaborate. A candidate to become Detroits eighth-inning setup man, Rondon felt discomfort Monday after pitching a scoreless inning against Washington the previous day. Detroit general manager Dave Dombrowski said Rondon was examined Wednesday by Dr. James Andrews, and an MRI revealed the tear. Dombrowski said the 23-year-old will have surgery next week. "He just came in one day and said he was a little tender," Dombrowski said Friday. "At that point, we figured he should see a doctor. Before that, he hadnt complained of any problems at all." Rondon becomes the latest pitcher hurt during spring training and headed to Tommy John surgery, following Atlantas Kris Medlen and Brandon Beachy, and Oaklands Jarrod Parker. Now Al Alburquerque will likely get some of those opportunities, and expanded roles may go to Evan Reed and left-handers Ian Krol and Phil Coke. The Tigers have been beset by injuries. ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Former Italy coach Cesare Prandelli signed a two-year contract Tuesday to become the new manager of the Turkish club Galatasaray, two weeks after resigning following the Azzurris disappointing group stage exit at the World Cup. Prandelli, who guided Italy to the final of the 2012 European Championship, announced he was stepping down immediately after the teams 1-0 loss to Uruguay on June 24 knocked it out of the World Cup. He said at the signing ceremony in Istanbul that he didnt have another job in mind when he quit the team after four years in charge. "I wasnt even in the mood for signing with a team. I also thought that Id like to see myself on the field and be successful. So, I didnt have any second thoughts and just said yes." Toronto Maple Leafs winger Phil Kessel received a double honour on Monday, being named amongst the NHLs Three Stars for both the week ending Feb. 2 as well as for the month of February. LONDON -- Michael Laudrup was fired as Swansea manager on Tuesday, paying the price for a slump in the year since delivering the south Wales clubs first major trophy. The Dane is leaving the Premier League club after 20 months, having signed a new contract in March 2013 after being linked with leading clubs following his teams triumph in the League Cup. Now, though, Swansea is 12th in the standings but just two points above the relegation zone, prompting the 49-year-old Laudrups dismissal. "It is a decision we have taken reluctantly," chairman Huw Jenkins said. "But its a decision made in the best interests of Swansea City Football Club and our supporters. It is the first time in nearly 10 years that the club has parted with a manager in this way, but we had to remove the constant uncertainty surrounding the club and Michaels long-term future with us." Garry Monk, the 34-year-old defender who has been out injured since September, will replace Laudrup, alongside current first team coach Alan Curtis, "for the foreseeable future," Swansea said. Like Laudrup, two possible contenders for the job on a full-time basis are former Barcelona players who advocate the type of passing game favoured by Swansea; Oscar Garcia, who currently manages second-tier club Brighton, and Luis Enrique, who is in his first season as coach of Celta Vigo. Swanseas next game is the south Wales derby against fierce rival Cardiff at the Liberty Stadium on Saturday.dddddddddddd "After thinking long and hard about the best way forward, I felt it was unlikely we would achieve a stable environment at the club (with Laudrup) to allow us to get back to basics and produce the performance levels that have served Swansea City so well over the last few years," Jenkins said. "Now we need to put that uncertainty behind us and move forward as a united football club on all fronts." For Laudrup, whose fortunes have rapidly plummeted since the League Cup success last February, it is the latest setback in a mixed managerial career for the former forward following a successful playing career that took in both Barcelona and Real Madrid. After winning the league and cup in Denmark with Brondby, he guided Getafe to the final of the Copa del Rey -- where they lost to Sevilla -- in his one season with the unheralded Spanish club. Next came a troubled year in Russia with Spartak Moscow before returning to Spain with Mallorca, where he soon fell out with the owners. It was at Swansea where his profile soared, building on the work of predecessor Brendan Rodgers and initially establishing the team as a fixture in the Premier Leagues top 10 with its attractive passing game. But since beating lowly Bradford in the cup final, Swansea has won just eight of out 35 Premier League games across the two seasons and there have been continuous reports about a rift with the hierarchy. VANCOUVER -- Six seasons ago, Roberto Luongos attitude would have been different. But now, the veteran goaltender is attempting to take his new backup role in stride as the Vancouver Canucks prepare to host their biggest game of the 2011-12 NHL season. Cory Schneider is expected to start in goal for the Canucks on Sunday in Game 5 of their Western Conference quarter-final series with the Los Angeles Kings while Luongo watches from the bench for the third straight game. "Im much better at (dealing with being replaced) now than when I got here," Luongo said. The Canucks, who finished first overall in the NHL for the second straight season, remain in a do-or-die situation against the Kings, the club that had to settle for the eighth and final playoff position in the West. Schneider made 43 saves as he backstopped Vancouver to a 3-1 victory Wednesday, but the underdog Kings lead the series by the same count. Luongo is vowing not to be a distraction to the team, and will prepare as though he were starting in case he gets the call to go between the pipes at some point. "Im a competitor," said Luongo, who backstopped Canada to a 2010 Olympic gold medal on the same Rogers Arena ice where Sundays game will be played. "Obviously, you guys all know that, and its tough (not to start). But at the same time, this is about the team, and Im not going to put myself ahead of the team. Were in this together." Coach Alain Vigneault said his decision to go with Schneider in Game 4 was not cut-and-dried, but he had to do what he felt was best for the team that day. The decision to replace Luongo with Schneider has prompted considerable speculation about the nominal No. 1 netminders future with the club. Luongo has a decade to go on his contract and Schneider is due to become a restricted free agent this summer. But the goaltenders and Vigneault said now is not the time to be debating future crease occupants. "Robertos future is on Sunday," said Vigneault. "Weve got to focus on Sunday. Hes no different than a quarterback whos a hit (to another QB) away from going back in the game or Schneids taking a puck somewhere, etc. Hes got to focus on Sunday -- like the rest of us." The Kings scored seven goals on Luongo in the first two games, while another goal was scored into an empty net, en route to identical 4-2 victories in the first two games. Schneider has allowed just two goals while posting a loss and a win in the third and fourth games. The 26-year-old Marblehead, Mass., native, who is in his second full season with the Canucks after three seasons in the minors, downplayed his elevation to playoff No. 1, noting he has just one post-season win on his record and Luongo posted 15 last spring as the Canucks reached the Stanley Cup final. Still, Schneider relishes the chance to start with the season on the line. "Theres no doubt that the regular seasons nice, but everyone sort of proves their mettle in the playoffs," he said. "Thats where you can make your reputation and earn a spot on the team." Schneider started the sixth game of the 2010-11 Stanley Cup final in Boston, but said he has been better prepared for playoff duty this time. He appeared in a total of 33 games in the regular season after playing sparingly most of last season. He has played in the American Hockey League final as well as two NCAA finals with Boston College during his university days. Those experiences have helped him prepare for dealing with the magnitude of Sundays contest. "Pressure is a little bit of a self-manifest," Schneider said. "Its what you make of it." The Canucks have enough pressure to deal with anyway. They are trying to become just the fourth team -- after the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, 1975 New York Islanders and 2010 Philadelphia Flyers --to come back from a 3-0 deficit and win a series. Because of two concerts at Rogers Arena, the Canucks have had to wait longer than usual to get another crack at the Kings. The series is in the midst of a three-day break between games. L.A. coach Darryl Sutter would prefer to have the usual one-day break. But Vigneault welcomed the extra time off. "I see it in a different way," he said. "Weve got a player that came back (from a concussion) for Game 4, Daniel Sedin, and this is going to give him a little bit more time to get his game where it can get to. Hes an elite player and, unfortunately, we didnt have him at the start of this series." The Canucks are looking for more good things from Sedin after he recorded an assist on his twin brother Henriks power-play goal and was on the ice for all three of Vancouvers markers Wednesday. Daniel Sedins return helped revive the Canucks previously dormant power play as it went two-for-three after being blanked 14 times and allowing two short-handed goals in the first three games. The coach again called for more difference-makers. He singled out Mason Raymond, who worked out on the fourth line Friday, as a player who must be better. Raymond has been a second or first-line winger most of the season, but Vigneault said he does not deserve to be on a top unit right now. "We need some contributions from different people," Vigneault said. "But we also need some guys to be big-time players for us." Notes: The NHL confirmed an 8 p.m. ET start time for Sundays game. ... He made the NL All-Star team as a starter at shortstop in 2012, when he batted .264 in 121 games for the Cardinals. Furcal is a 13-year veteran and a .281 careeer hitter with 314 stolen bases.dddddddddddd Hes expected to compete for a starting job at second base even though he has played only 36 games at the position, most recently in 2004. Miami already has youngster Adeiny Hechavarria at shortstop. Earlier in his career, Furcal had one of the strongest infield arms in the game. The Marlins finished last in the majors in 2013 in runs and hitting, and their second basemen combined to bat only .235. Donovan Solano started the most games there and batted .249. With the winter meetings next week, the Marlins remain in the market for help at third base. The speedy Furcal spent his first six seasons in Atlanta and the next 5 1/2 with the Los Angeles Dodgers before they traded him to St. Louis, where he helped the Cardinals win the 2011 World Series. DENVER -- Jhoulys Chacin is starting to make a name for himself, even if few can properly pronounce it. For the record, its yo-LEES cha-SEEN. And even more for the record, hes quietly amassed an 8-4 mark with a 2.81 earned-run average -- numbers worthy of all-star consideration. Chacin scattered three hits over six sharp innings and Seth Smith hit a tiebreaking single as part of a five-run sixth, lifting the Colorado Rockies to a 6-3 win over the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. The 23-year-old righty made only one mistake all afternoon, giving up a solo homer to Rob Johnson. He had seven strikeouts and walked two to pick up his third straight win. Chacin is among the NL leaders in several categories, including opposing batting average (.196). If Rockies manager Jim Tracy had a say in the matter, Chacin, whos emerging as the staff ace with Ubaldo Jimenez struggling, would be at the all-star game. "Has he done enough to be under consideration? Yes. Will it happen? I dont know," Tracy said. "Unfortunately, I dont get a vote. I know the direction I would lean. "Hes still a little bit new on the scene. But I think those who have walked up there and faced him are well aware of his capability." Chacin outdueled another up-and-coming young pitcher in Mat Latos (4-, who threw effectively before running out of steam in the sixth. Latos allowed four runs and eight hits in 5 1-3 innings. "It is frustrating. But thats how it is," Latos said. "Thats how baseball is." The Rockies cranked up their offence with seven singles in the sixth inning, including five straight at one point. Smith, Ty Wigginton and Charlie Blackmon all had RBI singles, while pinch hitter Ryan Spilborghs added a two-run base hit up the middle. The seven hits ties a season high for an inning and allowed the Rockies to take two of three from the Padres in the series. Even more, the Rockies are now 2-0 since Tracys closed-door meeting in which he implored his team to pick up their game. Asked if that lecture lit a fire, Wigginton simply said, "Absolutely it does." "Hes basically showing that hes living and dying with us as far as baseball. You want to go out there and respond," Wigginton said. Chris Denorfia drove in two runs for San Diego, including a two-out RBI single in the ninth. Backup catcher Jose Morales had a solid day at the plate, going 2 for 4. But he had a rough time in the field, especially in the sixth when he committed two errors. Morales threw wild to first after fielding a bunt and had another error on a catchers interference call when Ryan Ludwicks bat struck his glove. The Padres couldnt capitalize on the miscues as Morales threw out Jason Bartlett trying to steal and Chacin got Cameron Maybin to ground out to thwart the threat. The inning before, Morales was hit on the right thumb by a foul tip from Johnson. Morales clutched at his hand for several minutes as he crawled on the ground in pain. Following a visit from the trainer, Morales hopped up, took some quick tosses and stayed in the game. A few pitches later, Johnson hit a solo homer to left, his first since May 3 against Pittsburgh. The Rockies tied it up in their half of the fifth when Morales reached on a fielders choice and Chacin followed with a two-out single. Carlos Gonzalez added a single up the middle that brought in Morales. Chacin and Latos each pitched out of early trouble. Latos surrendered a leadoff double to Troy Tulowitzki in the second, but avoided a jam when Tulowitzki made a baserunning blunder and was thrown out attempting to advance to third on Wiggintons grounder to short. Chacin gave up a one-out double to Bartlett in the first, only to strike out Chase Headley and get Anthony Rizzo to fly out to left. Chacin isnt getting too caught up in the all-star talk, preferring to simply do his job and see what comes of it. "If it happens, its good," Chacin said. "If not, Ill just keep working all season." ST. LOUIS -- Jhonny Peralta went deep twice, ending the St. Louis Cardinals 366 at-bat homerless drought. The first would have been plenty for Adam Wainwright. Wainwright became the majors first five-game winner and Peralta had two home runs and four RBIs in a 7-0 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. "Im really having more fun pitching right now than I ever have," Wainwright said. "Its just such a chess match. "I feel Im right where I want to be and so Im going to work extra hard to stay there and not get complacent." Matt Holliday, Allen Craig and Yadier Molina also had RBIs for the Cardinals, who totalled five runs in their previous four games. St. Louis took two of three from the Pirates, shutting them out in both wins. "We got some big hits today, gave him a little bit of room to breathe," manager Mike Matheny said. "Even though weve got all the faith in the world in Waino, you just hate to have to be on the edge all the time." Edinson Volquez (1-2) gave up six runs in 5 2-3 innings for Pittsburgh, which has dropped five of six. His day unraveled after the Pirates appeal of a potential double-play ball was denied and first baseman Ike Davis foot was ruled off the bag in the sixth inning. Davis was on the dirt stretching for the relay and was adamant replay got it wrong, contending he had contact with the base for "at least a half-second" after gloving the relay from second baseman Neil Walker. "I knew I was on the bag. You can look at the video yourself and you would think I was on the bag, too," Davis said after the game. "But I guess it wasnt a close enough view." Craigs two-out bloop single made it 2-0 the next at-bat, his first RBI in eight games. Peralta followed with a three-run homer on a full count for a 5-0 lead that chased Volquez, whos 3-6 with a 5.66 ERA in 12 career starts against St. Louis. Manager Clint Hurdle said if the umpires had called it a double play, he didnt think Matheny would have prevailed in a challenge. "You saw how it changed the complexion of the game," Hurdle said. "I dont think it does anything mentally, youve got to play through it. "Weve been playing through calls we didnt like for 128 years, so that part of it is not going to change." Peralta also homered leading off the fifth, the Cardinals first since Craig on April 16 at Milwaukee. He has six homers, the most ever by a Cardinals shortstop in the opening month of the season and one more than Edgar Renteria hit in 2000. "The first one, I knew it was gone for sure," Peralta said. "The second home run, I didnt know for sure if was gone. He threw me a pretty good change-up." Wainwright (5-1) allowed three hits in eight scoreless innings and hasnt allowed a run in 25 consecutive innings. He stayed on turn after tweaking his right knee trying to cover first in his last start at New York and had seven strikeouts with two walks. Wainwrights only loss came April 6 at Pittsburgh when he allowed two runs in seven innings but lost 2-1 in another matchup with Volquez, with the win going to reliever Tony Watson. On Sunday, Wainwright retired nine straight before hitting Jose Tabata with a breaking ball with one out in the sixth. Pedro Alvarez singled with two outs, but Wainwright got Neil Walker on a called third strike. Hes the fourth St. Louis pitcher to win five games in the opening month, joining Darryl Kile (2000), Bob Tewksbury (1994) and John Denny (1977). "You cannot make a lot of mistakes," Volquez said. LONDON -- Paris Saint-Germain and Tottenham are among the teams relying on other results for Europa League progress and it isnt quite clear which way they want things to go when the group stage concludes this week. Although the competition offers the clubs the realistic chance of a trophy, both know elimination would leave them free to focus on more pressing domestic matters. PSG is tied with Montpellier at the top of the French league, while Spurs are in contention for a top-four finish in England. PSG hosts Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday needing to better Salzburgs result at Slovan Bratislava if it is to progress ahead of the Austrian club. Tottenham can only advance Thursday if it wins at Shamrock Rovers and Rubin Kazan loses at PAOK. With 15 teams having advanced, nine remaining berths are up for grabs this week -- with 19 clubs in contention to fill them. Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp has made clear his view of Europes second-tier club competition by consistently fielding second-string lineups of reserves and youth players. A full-strength Spurs side has taken the club to third in the Premier League but the Europa League side is on the verge of elimination after back-to-back defeats to Rubin and PAOK. PAOK has already clinched progress and Rubin needs only to avoid defeat to guarantee a place in the knockout stages, where eight sides including Manchester United and Manchester City will enter the competition following their elimination from the Champions League. Even defeat could take Rubin through since Tottenham also needs victory and a five-goal swing to progress. With Spurs slim Premier League title hopes having been further dented by the end of their 11-game unbeaten streak in Sundays 2-1 defeat at Stoke, Redknapp is unlikely to fret too much if his team goes out or significantly strengthen his lineup to prevent it. The likes of Danny Rose, Harry Kane and Jake Livermore are all likely to play ahead of Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Emmanuel Adebayor and Scott Parker. Chasing its first French league title since 1993-94, PSG is in a similar position on Wednesday. PSG will be missing striker Guillaume Hoarau and midfielders Clement Chantome and Blaise Matuidi against Bilbao, which has already advanced. Javier Pastore is still out of form, with the C42 million playmaker without a goal in six games, but Nene has been playing well recently and Kevin Gameiro ended an 11-game scoring drought in Saturdays 1-0 win at Sochaux. That was also PSGs first clean sheet in six games after conceding nine in the previous five. "It had been a while since we didnt concede a goal," coach Antoine Kombouare said. "Its the best way to prepare the Bilbao match on Wednesday. Victories give us a lot of confidence." Winger Jeremy Menez said PSG should at least try to advance. "It would be a failure if we get knocked out, considering our squad," Menez said. Also Wednesday, Lazio needs to pick up more points in Group D against Sporting Lisbon than FC Vaslui manage at FC Zurich to edge the Romanian team to the next round. Lazio struggled against Lecce at the weekend before winning 3-2 for a second straight victory, but goalkeeper Federico Marchetti is out injured and defenders Giuseppe Biava and Abdoulay Konko are also doubts. "Our unity is our strength," coach Edy Reja said. "Theres the right rapport." Udinese needs only to avoid defeat to visiting Celtic on Thursday to advance from Group I alongside 2010 champion Atletico Madrid, which can clinch top spot with victory over eliminate Rennes. Victory for Celtic would take the Scottish side through courtesy of a superior head-to-head record against Udinese. Udinese surprised many last season by finishing fourth and the unfashionable club was expected to struggle after losing key midfielder Gokhan Inler to Napoli and striker Alexis Sanchez to Barcelona. But Udinese coach Francesco Guidolin, who said as recently as Thursday that his main aim remains avoiding relegation, has manoeuvred his team into contention for Italys Serie A title. "Its great. Its a magical period for us which well try to make last as long as possible," Guidolin said. "Udinese have done well these past few years but not like this past year and a half. "To be doing better than last year having sold such key players surprised everyone, but the explanation lies in the fact that we know each other better." Udinese has won all seven of its Serie A home games and is also unbeaten in the Europa League at the Stadio Friuli. Even without star forward Patrick Kane, the defending Stanley Cup champions showed signs of moving in the right direction Tuesday night. Andrew Shaw and Duncan Keith each had a goal and an assist, and Chicago held on for a 4-2 win over the Dallas Stars. "We did some good things throughout the game," Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said. "All four lines were contributing and our special teams were good as well. Good win." Kris Versteeg and Marian Hossa also scored for Chicago, which needs just one more point to clinch a playoff berth for the sixth straight season. Patrick Sharp added two assists to help Chicago finish 4-1 against Dallas in the Central Division rivals regular-season series. "It was a big win tonight," said Keith, second in scoring among defencemen with 57 points. "Theyre a hungry team, fighting for their playoff lives." Ryan Garbutt scored twice for the Stars, who fell three points behind Phoenix for the final Western Conference playoff berth. Dallas matched Chicagos speed and effort early, but eventually the Blackhawks took over and built a 3-1 lead. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 late in the third, but Hossa empty-netter sealed the Blackhawks solid effort. Chicagos Corey Crawford made 25 saves, while Dallas Kari Lehtonen blocked 38 shots. "Theyre a fast team, can really skate," Crawford said. "They got the jump early and then our D were able to shut them down really good. "They really shut down everything in the third period." Dallas Tyler Seguin set up Garbutts goal in the second period to extend his point streak to 10 games. He has seven goals and 10 assists during the run. Blackhawks top prospect Teuvo Teravainen didnt record a point in his NHL debut, but logged 11 minutes and 39 seconds of ice time. The 19-year-old forward was Chicagos first-round draft pick in 2012 and led his team in Finland, Jokerit, in scoring this season. Chicago played its third game without Kane, who is on long-term injured reserve and may miss the rest of the regular season. Dallas had several good chances early, including Garbutts breakaway just over 2 minutes in. Crawford stopped his close-in rising shot with a glove save. "We hung around the first 10 minutes and Garbutt had the breakaway,"t; Stars coach Lindy Ruff said.dddddddddddd "But I thought they slowly started taking it away from us. "We slowed the game down and they sped it up all the time." Chicago took charge as the period progressed, then Shaws power-play goal with 18 seconds left in the first opened the scoring. Shaw swept in a rebound of Sharps shot from the blue line with a highlight-reel effort. Shaw was knocked to the ice by Dallas defenceman Trevor Daley in the crease, but backhanded in the loose puck as he fell to his knees and while facing away from the net. Versteeg was credited with a goal at 4:12 of the second that made it 2-0. After Dallas Antoine Roussel failed to clear the puck, Versteeg slid a pass toward Hossa who was cruising in down the slot. Rousell reached with his stick to break up the pass, but deflected the pucks past Lehtonen. Garbutt didnt miss on his second breakaway of the game, and cut it to 2-1 midway through the second. He skated in behind the Blackhawks defence after Seguin banked a pass off the left boards from the Stars zone. Garbutt cut across the crease and slipped a backhander between Crawfords pads. Keith restored Chicagos two-goal lead at 3-1 with 5:45 left in the period on a fluttering screened shot from the left point. Garbutts second goal cut it to 3-2 with 5:40 left in the third. Following Nick Leddys turnover in the right corner of the Chicago zone, Garbutt carried the puck to the net. Crawford stopped his first shot, but Garbutt stuffed in the rebound from right side of the goal. "Its too bad we couldnt get the third (goal) there," Garbutt said. "Its doesnt matter if its pretty or not this time of year. "Well just take what we can get and need to start scoring more as a team." Hossa fired into an empty net with 33.3 seconds left to complete the scoring. Notes: Keith has six goals and 51 assists for his 57 points. ... The Blackhawks won 49 of 71 faceoffs on Tuesday. The Raptors were sent to a loss Friday night when they fell in Indianapolis to the undefeated Pacers, 91-84. It was the third loss in a row for the Raps, who have yet to score 100 points in a game. Toronto hung tough with the leagues best team, but the second and third quarters were a disaster. During that 24-minute stretch, the Pacers outscored the Raptors, 50-27. Toronto finished strong to make it a game, but none the less, it was a third consecutive defeat. "We have to be able to put together a full game," said forward Rudy Gay. "There are spurts when we play as good as any team in the league. But we let up just a little bit and they were able to come back and take advantage of that." Gay scored a game-high 30 points, while Amir Johnson had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Kyle Lowry also netted 12 for the Raptors, as DeMar DeRozan only managed six points on a woeful 2-for-15 shooting night. The Raptors only shot 39.5 percent from the field against Indiana, which is one of the NBAs best defensive units. The Utah Jazz will try to get their elusive first victory as they wrap up a four-game road trip. The Jazz fell to 0-6 on Friday night in Chicago as the Bulls thumped them, 97-73. The Jazz were expected to struggle this season as they decided to go with a youth movement. Although, the franchise hasnt started 0-6 since an 0-11 beginning to its inaugural campaign in New Orleans. The Jazz moved to Salt Lake City in 1979-80. "We cant feel sorry for ourselves, we just got to keep fighting," Jazz head coach Tyrone Corbin said. Utah fell behind by 12 after the first quarter and never really made it close Friday. The Jazz were 22 down after three and failed to score 20 points in three of four quarters. Gordon Hayward paced Utah with 15 points. Derrick Favors and Alec Burks scored 10 points apiece. Rookie big man Rudy Gobert pulled down 12 rebounds in 15:38 of action. The Jazz won both of last seasons matchups, including a triple-overtime thriller in Toronto. Maybe we can do something for the protection of the body," Hofer told reporters high up on the normal hill late on Monday night as women jumpers whistled by at 90 kph (60 mph) at the Sochi Olympics. "Whatever is available on the market we will try." Hofer noted that Alpine ski officials had spent a long time studying jackets that contain small air bags to help cushion the impact of falls. "When they get something up there we will use it. At the moment I am preparing to use some protection for certain parts of our body, mostly the backbone," he said. Tougher helmets will be introduced into Alpine skiing and ski jumping authorities want to adopt the same standards. In recent years the FIS has taken a series of sometimes unpopular steps it says will make the sport fairer and safer. The federation imposes minimum body mass index requirements to weed out jumpers which it says are too light. Jumpers have to wear body tight suits with low aerodynamics, much to the irritation of athletes such as four-times Olympic gold medallist Simon Ammann of Switzerland. New hills have been redesigned to make the in-run smoother, a development which some jumpers say make takeoffs harder. A complex new system to compensate skiers for wind conditions will be used at the Sochi Games for the first time. Hofer, who has been at FIS for 22 years, said he began trying to make the spoort safer some 20 years ago after he saw a series of bad falls.dddddddddddd "I started to talk to experts and they told me Are you crazy? If you make ski jumping safer nobody will watch. It isnt right," said the ebullient Austrian. "I would like to attract parents to deliver their children to our beloved sport in a way they know it is a sport where athletes are cared for." As well as improving safety, Hofer - who notes that "when you release an athlete at 100 km/h from the takeoff, you cant take him back - is particularly keen to address rapidly changing wind conditions that have wrecked many a competition. Headwinds help athletes soar further but if they are too strong they can produce dangerously long jumps. Conversely, tail winds cut flying distances. In the past, officials would either scrap competitions altogether or restart them halfway through to take into account changing winds, which Hofer said frustrated spectators. Jumpers used to be judged on distance and style. Under the new system, they now can also gain or be docked points to take wind conditions into account. The calculations are made by a series of computers linked to seven sensors along the in-run. "The athletes performance is removed from the influence of external conditions," said Hofer, pointing to a screen which showed the wind strength and direction from each sensor. The challenge for audiences is that the athlete who jumps the furthest does not always win. Alexander Pointner, head coach of the Austrian team, told Reuters that spectators should not have "to think What is this, that guy jumped so far but hes only fourth, whats that? Our sport should not be so difficult". Hofer has no intention of changing his mind. "Whatever makes ski jumping safer and fairer is worth it, even if sometimes you have to take something (away) from the transparency. People will understand sooner or later," he said. FIS is looking at whether it would be possible to shine a blue laser line on the snow to show the public exactly where a jumper has to land to take the lead, he added. ' ' '

Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch clearly was frustrated, but he was not about to point fingers. Everybody was to blame for Montreals dismal second half that saw the New York Red Bulls score three goals in what became a 5-2 rout on Saturday. Despite scoring more goals in the first half than they had in three previous games combined, the Impact lost for the third time in four games. "Weve all got to stay focused on how to move ourselves along. Obviously, its a moment of big frustration because we felt like it was a good first half. But one half doesnt get you results," Marsch said. "The second half just got much too open and we allowed too much space for their talented players to make plays and they punished us." Thierry Henry scored his first Major League Soccer hat trick and assisted on another for New York, which erased two Montreal leads before halftime. Henry, the reigning MLS Player of the Week, scored what proved to be the deciding goal in the 58th minute. He has five goals in four games. "He killed us. Every time he touched the ball, he killed us," Marsch said. "He played well." The Impact never seemed to recover from a penalty kick awarded to the Red Bulls late in the first half. Montreal defender Matteo Ferrari brought down Red Bulls midfielder Dax McCarty in the penalty area and referee Michael Kennedy pointed to the spot.dddddddddddd Kenny Cooper slotted the penalty past Impact goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts in stoppage time to tie the score at 2-2. To that point, the first half had been a source of encouragement for the Impact. Montreal came into the game having scored one goal in its first three matches, but was goalless in two road losses. Impact forward Sanna Nyassi ended that futility, taking advantage of a giveaway by Red Bulls defender Markus Holgersson and beating goalkeeper Ryan Mears in the 18th minute for a 1-0 lead. Henry tied the score on a header in the 28th minute, but the Impact regained the lead 10 minutes later on a goal by Justin Mapp. Henrys go-ahead goal came after McCarty intercepted a Montreal clearing pass. He laid the ball off to Henry near the top of the penalty area and the French national then turned and cracked a low shot inside the left post. Henry later flicked a cross from defender Jan Gunnar Solli to Mehdi Balouchy for a tap-in near the left post. Henry finished the scoring by pouncing on a rebound in the 89th minute and shooting past a helpless Ricketts. "I thought we were very good in the first half, the better team on the field for sure. The second half was kind of the opposite," Mapp said. "The second half, no excuses. We cant blame the PK for the letdown. We just werent good enough in the second half." FLIMS, Switzerland -- Winnipegs Braden Calvert and Edmontons Kelsey Rocque are headed for the playoffs at the world junior curling championships after both Canadian teams won their final two games on Sunday, the last day of the round-robin portion of the tournament. Rocque and her rink of Keely Brown, Taylor McDonald, Claire Tully, alternate Alison Kotylak and coach Amanda-Dawn Coderre secured their spot in the Page 1-2 playoff against Korea after defeating both Scotland and Denmark to finish in second place. The Canadians needed an extra end to squeak out a 7-6 win over Scotlands Gina Aitken in their first game on Sunday. Riding a four-game winning streak into the final game of the round robin, Rocque scored a huge seven points in the eighth end to nail down a 12-7 victory over Denmarks Christine Svensen (0-9). "They had an unfortunate break in that end and we were fortunate enough to capitalize," said Rocque about the unusual score of seven. "It was the wrong side of the inch for Denmark with a lot of their stones in that end." The Canadian women enter the playoffs in second place with a 7-2 record behind South Koreas Kyeong-Ae Kim, also at 7-2, who defeated Canada in the round robin. Calvert and his junior mens team of Kyle Kurz, Lucas Van Den Bosch, Brendan Wilson, alternate Matt Dunstone and coach Tom Clasper are also off to the playoffs after wrapping up the round robin with two lopsided victories. The Canadians needed only six ends to dispatch American Jake Vukich 8-1 in a game that Canada controlled from the start. They scored three in the first end and had built a 7-1 lead by the fifth-end break. A steal in six put the game away. "We got off to another good start and had all the momentum the whole game, I think, and we were in control," said Calvert. In their final game of the round robin, Calvert and crew cruised to a 9-1 win over Sebastian Wunderer of Austria who came into the game with a 3-5 record. Canada scored four in the fifth and stole another two in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Norway will play Scotland in the mens Page 1-2 . Wilkerson was docked $15,785 for roughing the passer, while Coples was fined $7,875 for unnecessary roughness. Both were surprised at the fines, especially since no penalties were called on the field. "I was going to appeal, regardless," Wilkerson said Thursday. "It didnt matter the amount. If it was $5,000, I still wouldve appealed. I dont think it was a dirty hit. I dont think I shouldve gotten fined." Locker was hit by both Wilkerson and Coples in the third quarter of Tennessees 38-13 win Sunday after he threw a pass. Locker was carted off the field and expected to miss a few weeks with a sprained right hip and knee. Wilkerson made contact first after he took a step and smacked into Locker just after he released the football. Coples then hit into Locker low -- "just a football play," he called it -- as the quarterback fell. "The league felt like it was a personal foul or an inappropriate hit," Coples said. "But one thing about it is that its up for debate, so Im going to appeal it, and go forward from here.dddddddddddd" Titans coach Mike Munchak called both hits "unnecessary." "I thought the first one, he dropped his helmet into him and loaded onto him, which youre supposed to pull back when youre late. He didnt," Munchak said Monday. "The second one was totally unnecessary." Locker, however, said he didnt think the hits were intentional, and neither player should be fined. "I personally dont think it was a dirty hit," Wilkerson said. "He said it, so ..." Added Coples: "He felt that same way, and thats a good thing." Wilkerson insisted that being fined for the hit wont change how he approaches his style of play. "I just play hard, physical football like Im supposed to and how I was brought up and taught," Wilkerson said. "Im going to continue to do that and play ball the way I know how to play ball." Titans safety Michael Griffin said Wednesday that he was fined $21,000 by the league for his hit on Jets receiver Stephen Hill, who suffered a concussion. Griffin said he appealed the fine as soon as he received it. Hills status for New Yorks game at Atlanta on Monday night was uncertain. ' ' '

David Poile and his U.S. Olympic hockey management team have been making what he called "ghost rosters" since August. Its getting close to the time where the roster has to be real. "We know were going to have to make these decisions pretty soon," said Poile, the general manager of the American side. "Weve also got a number of injuries right now that we have to deal with, and we have to make decisions on that." Decisions are looming on three players who are out with injuries: Jonathan Quick of the Los Angeles Kings, defenceman Brooks Orpik of the Pittsburgh Penguins and winger Ryan Callahan of the New York Rangers. Team Canada is dealing with a similar situation with injured Tampa Bay Lightning star Steven Stamkos -- who was considered a lock to make it to Sochi -- and could name him to the team even if he hasnt returned after suffering a broken right tibia. Poile, by day the Nashville Predators general manager, plans to use the same injury exception if he has to. "If we think any of these players are going to be on the Olympic team or we want them on the Olympic team and theyre going to be healthy by Feb. 11, then well have to name them on the team and then well have to deal with replacing them if their injury doesnt come around," Poile said on a conference call Thursday. Unlike Canada, which will take advantage of the IIHF pushing the 25-man roster deadline back to Jan. 7, the U.S. will still name its team Jan. 1 at the Winter Classic. Six days may not make a lot of difference in this case. In answering the question about injuries, Poile used Quick, whos recovering from a Grade 2 groin strain, as his example. He went on to say that he expects the Kings goaltender to be ready. "The information that we have from Los Angeles, and specifically from (GM) Dean Lombardi, tells us that hes going to be back before the end of the year," Poile said. "If hes a guy that we want on the team, we will name him to the team. If, for some reason, between then and the start of the Olympics, he cant play because this injury didnt come around or what have you, we will be able to replace that player." Quick, the 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy-winner for the Stanley Cup-champion Kings, is a shoo-in as long as hes healthy. He could even be the starter, though Poile had plenty of good things to say about 2010 silver-medal-winner Ryan Miller of the Buffalo Sabres too. The U.S. has several goaltending options, including Jimmy Howard of the Detroit Red Wings, Cory Schneider of the New Jersey Devils and Ben Bishop of the Lightning. On defence, the U.S. cant be so sure about Orpik, who suffered a concussion Saturday night when he was knocked to the ice and sucker-punched by Boston Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton. "Its one of those things probably, with a concussion, that were going to have to wait and see and kind of see how he reacts," U.S. associate general manager and Penguins GM Ray Shero said this week. "Right now (hes) really not doing too much, just resting." Orpik was on the U.S. team at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver and figured to be a part of the core of the group Poile expects to bring back for Sochi. If the concussion lingers and he cannot play, it would mean the loss of a veteran presence and key defensive stopper and penalty-killer. The penalty kill would also suffer if Callahan cannot recover in time, and the Rangers captain is in the most danger of that among these three. Callahan suffered a sprained ligament in his left knee in Tuesdays loss to the Predators and is expected to be out four to six weeks. That would mean a return sometime in January, after the roster deadline but before the Olympic break and before players fly to Russia. Poile listed Callahan among the U.S. teams leadership group and said "in all likelihood" all five -- Ryan Suter, Zach Parise, Dustin Brown and David Backes, additionally -- would make it. Its hard to replace what Callahan brings, but the U.S. is deep at right wing with Patrick Kane, Phil Kessel, T.J. Oshie, Blake Wheeler and Bobby Ryan. Poile said he and Brian Burke, who was GM of the 2010 team, agreed that it was harder this season to pick the team and that thats a good thing. Its even better because of what injuries could do. "The most important thing, for U.S.A. Hockey specifically, is our talent pool is so much better, so much more in quantity (and) most importantly in quality," Poile said. "(Players from 2010 are) going to be the foundation of this team. Theres going to be some new players, up-and-coming younger players, that are just too good to keep off the team." HUGE GAME: Im here in NYC for the Raptors at Nets game Monday night. Some games are just bigger than others and this is one of them. Four games separate them for first place in the Atlantic. Tie-breaker at stake, as well. A win by the Raps would be a major step with only 20 games to play beyond this one. Both are on a back-to-back. Its a tough challenge for Toronto versus a desperate opponent. I cant wait. 2. STEVE NOVAK (Raptors): The five three-pointers at Minnesota were major. Patrick Patterson is out and its all about digging deeper into your bench and he delivered. The sum is more important than the parts. Love how Landry Fields and Chuck Hayes haave performed when needed as well.dddddddddddd 3. MARCUS THORNTON (Nets): 27 points Sunday night versus his old Kings team. A terrific pickup for Brooklyn. He gives them firepower and deep range. Streaky scorer who can change a game quick if hes hot. He did that on Sunday night. He is the perfect complement off the bench for their team. 4. RAJON RONDO (Celtics): 11 points and 18 assists on Sunday versus the Pistons. GM Danny Ainges phone will be ringing off the hook this summer if he keeps dropping as many dimes as he did on Sunday. Hes a wonderful talent and if he gets back to being the explosive lead guard he once was, watch out! 5. CHICAGO BULLS: Watched their overtime win over the Heat on Sunday. What can you say, other than wow! No team in the NBA plays harder than them. Coach Thibodeau gets after it and Joakim Noah is that guy you want on your side. Hustle truly is a talent. ' ' '

"Hit the net!" A common refrain that is cried out in hockey rinks all over, as a scoring chance is squandered by an errant shot, missing the 4 x 6 cage. Scott Cullen takes a look at the numbers to see which NHL players were best and worst when it came to hitting the net during the 2010-2011 season. Looking at these results, there are only indications to be gleaned, no surefire answers, but hopefully a few trends worth noting. The players have been divided as forwards and defencemen because, for the most part, defencemen dont hit the net as frequently; something about shooting from further away that makes it harder to find the target. From the defencemen that missed the net most often, theres an unfortunate trend out of Dallas, where three of the bottom six in accuracy played last season, while No. 17, Matt Niskanen, played most of the year for the Stars too. Getting an offensive defencemen, like Alex Goligoski, might change matters a little as he should get higher quality shots when he jumps into the rush, but Goligoski missed 33.6% of his shots directed at the goal too, which was middle of the road among defencemen. Many of the defencemen on this list are of the stay-at-home variety, so there shots towards the goal may not be much more than plays to keep the puck deep in the offensive zone, but its more concerning when power play trigger men like Michael Del Zotto, Jack Johnson, Marek Zidlicky and Shea Weber are missing the mark. Of course, Weber tied for fourth among blueliners with 16 goals last season, so there is some risk and reward involved when he unleashes his blasts from the point. First up, the defencemen with the highest percentage of missed shots (minimum 20 shots on goal): Rank PLAYER TEAM POS SOG MS MS% 1. Josh Gorges Montreal D 20 19 48.7% 2. While there are a number of non-descript players here, due to small sample sizes, it does stand out that an active shooter like Bryan McCabe still hit the net so frequently. Among the Top 25 defencemen in terms of accuracy, Avalanche defenceman Erik Johnson and Sabres blueliner Jordan Leopold were the only ones with at least eight goals, so its not as though the ability to hit the net from the blueline suddenly means a defenceman is a scoring threat. Adam McQuaid Boston D 46 16 25.8% When it comes to forwards that miss the net most often, there are a couple of ways to look at the results. A player that simply has an erratic shot, or perhaps is too fine when trying to pick corners, could be one of the reasons that a player misses a high percentage of their shots. Another possibility is that forwards that dont go to the so-called "dirty areas", like the slot right in front of the net, are more likely to miss the net; again, something about shooting from a greater distance making it harder to hit the target. In some cases, that may be a reflection of a players positioning on the power play, but it still doesnt reflect particularly well on Alexander Semin to be missing the net the most among forwards that received significant ice time. These are the forwards that missed the net on the highest percentage of their shots directed at the oppositions net (minimum 20 shots on goal). Rank PLAYER TEAM POS SOG MS MS% 1. Trent Hunter N.Y. ST. JOHNS, N.L. -- Goals on home ice havent come easy for Carl Klingberg. But that changed on Friday when the 22-year-old scored twice to lead the St. Johns IceCaps over the visiting Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins 5-0 in American Hockey League play. "It was nice to finally get that (goal) over with," said Klingberg, whose scoring drought at home dated back to Apr. 10 of last season. "Its always nice to score. Its a good game when you score two goals." Klingberg, a native of Sweden, had a slow start to the season. But he now has six goals and 10 points in 20 contests and has seen an increase in playing time, especially on the power play. "At the start of the season, maybe I didnt get that time out there, but Ive worked hard all season," he said. "My power-play (performance) was really good on the road...Im out there a lot more now and when Im out there more, I get more chances to score." IceCaps head coach Keith McCambridge has been pleased with Klingbergs all round effort as of late and has had no trouble giving the prospect extra minutes. "When Carl plays that way, he earns his minutes," he said. "Ive always been a coach that believes in minutes being earned. He was really good our last (two) games. When he skates, he gets in on the forecheck, creates room and is effective in puck-possession. You saw that tonight. When hes able to do that, hes a top-six forward." Zach Redmond, Jerome Samson and Andrew Gordon also scored for the IceCaps (12-9-3) and Eddie Pasquale stopped 20 shots to earn the shutout. Klingberg opened the scoring for the IceCaps at the 15:09 mark of the first period with a backhand from the face-off circle that beat Penguins (13-6-1) goaltender Eric Hartzell blocker side. Klingberg scored again midway through the second period, finishing a pass from JC Lipon, who was behind the net, to make it 2-0 St. Johns. Redmond made it 3-0 before the second period was through when he scored on the power play. Samson and Gordon scored 1:05 apart in the third period to complete St. Johns offence. "I thought we played with some really good structure for the three periods," said McCambridge. "We were committed to blocking shots, and in regards to puck support, we had some speed to our game. We got ourselves out of trouble with some penalty killing and our power play was pretty good after we ironed out a couple areas where we need to be entering the zone." Hartzell made 24 saves for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton. The IceCaps went 2 for 5 on the power play while the Penguins failed to score on five chances with the man advantage. Lynn Swann Jersey . Yet even normally stoic San Antonio couldnt hide its emotion on the court, and the satisfaction afterward, of toppling the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. Tim Duncan had 23 points and 11 rebounds, and the Spurs never trailed against the Heat, weathering a sluggish third quarter for an intense 111-87 victory Thursday. "Im sure this has some special meaning, to say something different would be silly," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said, "but we expect them to come out hard and play." In their first home game against Miami since losing a heart-wrenching, seven-game NBA Finals, the Spurs handed the Heat their worst loss of the season. The rematch brought out a raucous sold-out crowd and sparked high emotions from both teams. Players dived recklessly for loose balls and yelled at officials, while Popovich often screamed at his own players. "We needed a game like this," Manu Ginobili said. "Weve been talking (about it) all season long. Our record was probably 1-10, 1-8 or something like that against the top four teams in the league. So we needed a big one, and today we played well. . Its one of those wins that really gets you going." Tony Parker scored 17 points, including 14 in a wild first half, Boris Diaw added 16 and Kawhi Leonard had 11 for the Spurs (45-16), which has won five straight. Chris Bosh had 24 points, LeBron James added 19, Dwyane Wade had 16 and Michael Beasley 11 for Miami (43-16). James, who ditched the protective mask he was wearing early in the first half, was hounded by Leonard into shooting 6 for 18. The Spurs didnt do anything different defensively than they had in the past, James said, but the NBA did. The four-time MVP said the short-sleeved, tight-fitting "El Heat" jerseys Miami had to wear are not conducive for shooting. "Im not making any excuses, but Im not a big fan of the jerseys," James said. "So I have to figure something out next time I have to wear the short-sleeve jerseys. Every time I shoot, it feels like its just pulling right up underneath my arm. I already dont have much room for error on my jump shot anyways, so its definitely not a good thing." James got rid of the mask that protected his broken nose with four minutes left in the first quarter. "I dont like it," James said. "Its that simple; just got frustrated with it early on so I took it off.ddddddddddddIt didnt help me, taking it off. Its probably a game-to-game thing." He missed his first two attempts sans mask, tossing up a wild 14-footer that banged off the front of the rim and backboard, then botching a reverse layup. His first mask-free basket was a 5-foot running floater over Leonard with 6:26 left in the half. "(Leonard) was a pest," Duncan said. "Thats what we need him to be. He stuck his hand in there, knocked some balls away, got some steals, he contested shots. I think he did a great job overall in every aspect." The Spurs opened the fourth quarter on a 13-6 run, returning to the breakneck attack that led to a 17-point lead in the first half. Duncans 18-foot jumper gave San Antonio a 99-85 lead with 3:00 remaining, drawing a fist-pounding of the scorers table by Manu Ginobili as he waited to enter the game. The closing run was needed after the Heat kept the Spurs out of the paint early in the second half, to the point Popovich screamed, "Tony! Attack!" after his All-Star point guard walked the ball up midway through the third period. Miami turned up the heat defensively, closing quickly on every pass. San Antonio was 7 for 22 from the field in the third quarter. Miami was 10 for 18 in the quarter, with James, Wade and Bosh scoring six points each. Miami had cut the lead to 79-74 with 2:00 left in the third period, but could get no closer. "They are difficult to guard," Wade said. "They have a great system and they have a very unselfish team. That is why they are one of the better teams in the league. Thy stay true to their system and believe in it." Parker showed no signs of the lower body problems that sidelined him six games last month, driving unrestrained into the paint. Parker played all but the final two minutes of the first quarter, going 5 for 6 from the field in scoring 10 points and dishing out three assists. "Tonys our setup guy," Duncan said. "He runs our team, he sets our pace, sets our rhythm and he played the right way tonight." NOTES: The Spurs Jeff Ayres (sprained right hand) sat out for the second time in the last three games. Ayres has started 10 games. ... Miami received a rousing ovation when it took the court for pregame warmups, but was booed lustily during introductions. ... James glared at official Kevin Scott after drawing consecutive fouls, starting with a charge. He was mum when he drove headlong into Duncan for his third foul of the quarter and fourth overall. The Philadelphia Flyers are ramping up their efforts to find a suitor for centre Vincent Lecavalier. TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger reported Thursday that Lecavaliers agent Kent Hughes has permission to speak to other teams regarding a trade for his client. Dreger adds that making a deal will be tough for the Flyers in the days leading up to July 1, as Lecavalier is owed a $2 million bonus on that date. Dreger reported earlier this month that Lecavalier was in play in the trade market, though he has a no-move clause in his contract. The 34-year-old scored 20 goals and added 17 assists with a minus-16 rating in his first season with the Flyers. Lecavalier spent the first 14 years of his career with the Tampa Bay Lightning before the club bought him out after the 2012-2013 season. The Flyers signed him to a five-year contract with an average annual value of $4.5 million. He has 403 goals and 508 assists for 911 points in 1106 career games with the Lightning and Flyers. Lecavalier won a Stanley Cup with Tampa Bay in 2004 and the Maurice Richard Trophy as the NHLs top goal scorer in 2007. Lecavalier was selected by the Lightning first overall in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft. Jadeveon Clowney Jersey . KINGS TAKE FREEWAY SERIES The Los Angeles Kings stormed the Anaheim Ducks early in Game Seven, building a 3-0 first-period lead on their way to a 6-2 decision, earning the Kings a rematch with the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Final. LOS ANGELES -- Hiroki Kuroda had to share the spotlight with new teammate Justin Sellers on Sunday, and the right-hander didnt mind one bit. Kuroda pitched seven strong innings, Sellers hit a three-run drive for his first major league homer and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Houston Astros 7-0 on Sunday to sweep their three-game series. Sellers was promoted from Triple-A Albuquerque when rookie Dee Gordon went on the disabled list on Friday. The 25-year-old shortstop is from nearby Bellflower and made frequent visits to Dodger Stadium with his parents when he was a child. "It was very special, exciting and emotional for me, my family and my friends who have been there supporting me ever since day one," said Sellers, whose father Jeff spent four seasons in the big leagues as a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. Sellers chased rookie Jordan Lyles with a drive into the lower seats in the left-field corner for his first three RBIs in the majors. The sixth-inning homer came in Sellers ninth big league at-bat. "My first reaction was: I knew I got it. Running around the bases was just the most incredible feeling Ive ever had," said Sellers, whose favourite Dodgers growing up were sluggers Eric Karros, Mike Piazza, Darryl Strawberry and Eric Davis. "It was awesome to have my family here and get it. When I got to the dugout I got a lot of high-fives and hugs and stuff. Ive got chills right now talking about it." Sellers teammates were certainly pumped -- particularly catcher Dioner Navarro, who surprised him with a shaving cream pie in the face while he was doing a post-game TV interview on the field. "All home runs are exciting, but you never really forget your first one," said Matt Kemp, one of several players who urged Sellers to acknowledge the curtain call he received from the crowd of 36,339. "Thats a good feeling. I know what it felt like to get my first home run. Hes from this area and had his family here, so it was a special moment. Im happy for him Hopefully, theres more to come." Kemp matched his career high with his 28th homer for the Dodgers, who had lost four in a row before the lowly Astros came to Chavez Ravine. Navarro also went deep and scored twice. Kuroda (8-14) allowed five singles, struck out six and walked one. The 36-year-old right-hander, who came in tied with recently demoted Astros left-hander J.A. Happ for the most losses in the NL, won for only the third time in his last 15 starts despite a season ERA of just 2.88. Kurodas last five victories have come in games in which he didnt allow a run, dating to hiss 2-0 win at Pittsburgh on May 11.dddddddddddd "Im not really used to having this many runs. Id much rather have it than not have it, but my approach to pitching isnt any different," Kuroda said through a translator. "Im a starting pitcher, and I want to keep the game close. So the less home runs I give up the better, but its not because of a lack of run support." The rebuilding Astros have dropped a season-worst six straight games and 13 of 16 since unloading outfielders Hunter Pence and Michael Bourn before the non-waiver trade deadline. Houstons 38-83 record is the worst in the majors. The Astros trail NL Central-leading Milwaukee by a whopping 32 games -- their largest deficit since ending the 1975 season a franchise-record 43 1/2 games off the pace. Lyles (1-7) gave up seven runs and seven hits in 5 1-3 innings, including all three home runs. The right-hander, who at age 20 is the youngest player in the majors, has a 5.31 ERA in 13 starts since beating the Chicago Cubs in his big league debut on May 31 at Wrigley Field. "I just made mistakes throughout the entire game and they made me pay," Lyles said. "On Sellers home run, I was trying to punch him out with runners on first and second and then just hung a mistake over the plate." Navarro hit a two-run shot in the second inning for his fifth homer and Kemp made it 3-0 in the third with his second homer in two days after a season-worst 11-game drought. Dodgers first baseman James Loney pulled off a slick unassisted double play to end the fourth inning, making a leaping grab of Carlos Lees line drive and spinning around to tag J.D. Martinez as he dove back to the bag. NOTES: Four of Navarros five homers this season have come in day games, one of them against Astros RHP Wilton Lopez in the eighth inning of a 1-0 victory on June 19 at Los Angeles. Kuroda also started that game and ended up with a no-decision after allowing just three hits in seven innings. ... Pitching at Dodger Stadium for the first time, Lyles walked his first two batters of the game -- equalling the number he had in 32 1-3 innings over his previous five starts. ... The Dodgers only other three-game sweep this season came against San Diego at Chavez Ravine in the final series before the all-star break. The Padres and Astros, both last in their respective divisions, are a combined 92-151 and 46 1/2 games out of first place. ... The Dodgers begin 10-game road trip through Milwaukee, Colorado and St. Louis on Monday night. 2B Jamey Carroll is batting a major league-best .344 on the road, compared to .253 at home. ' ' '
