SPOILER ALERT: TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL ELLE
SPOILER ALERT: TOKYO INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVALNovember 1 11:47 AMby Rebecca Willa Davis 0 Comments Buddha Mountain Photo: Laurel Film Company This weekend marked the culmination of the 23rd annual Tokyo International Film Festival, which has been going strong since 1985. Cannes it's not, but the nine-day event is a unique destination for cinephiles searching for the next Kurosawa. (TIFF has also turned its attention to environmental issues, rolling out a green carpet and hosting eco-centric movies.) In between screenings, we spoke with the festival's competition programming director Yoshi Yatabe to try to find out if he could guess who'd be crowned the winner. ELLE: TIFF started in 1985, well before the recent film festival boom. How has it evolved over the years? YY: We screen and introduce not only acclaimed directors' films, but also many major and independent Japanese and Asian films during the cheap karen millen festival. We're trying to be a global point for the great filmmakers and their films to be introduced to Asia and the film industry world. ELLE: How do you decide what films make the cut? YY: The quality of the film is the most important characteristic. And also, [whether or not it will be] the "premiere." I try to select the films from all over the world, and not be biased! ELLE: In what ways has the festival become more environmentally conscious? YY: In 2008 we unrolled the green carpet, which is made from around 23,000 recycled plastic bottles. We're also using green power for all screenings and karen millen dresses official events during the festival. ELLE: Is there such a thing as "Japanese cinema," or does geographic location not really play a role in filmmaking? YY: The geographic location means a lot for the film, therefore I do think there are "Japanese" films. But it's hard to define what "Japanese cinema" is in a few words. ELLE: Which up-and-coming Japanese filmmakers do you think are ones to watch? YY: There are lots of talented Japanese directors right now, including http://kmoutlet365.co.uk/ Yuya Ishii, Tetsuaki Matsue, Yu Irie, Hiromasa Hirosue, Koji Fukada, and Satoko Yokohama. ELLE: What's been the highlight of this year's film festival so far? YY: [If the Seed Doesn't Die], whose director is little-known in Japan. The Romanian film's world premiere was fully packed with around 600 audience members who stayed until midnight to hear the Q&A session with the director. Tags: Tokyo Film Festival
