So an outdoor show is hard for networks? Everybody together now: Not our problem! Unlike outdoor shows, studio shows are bled to death by too many rehearsals, too many video screens and too many weird sound effects. Not to advocate for drunken slobs in Philadelphia, but it's nice for the self-congratulatory torpor of pregame shows to be punctuated by little people waving their pitchforks.

The Essence Festival, in Houston after 11 years in the New Orleans Superdome, featured a vibrant cross-section of R hip-hop and soul, with a few stand-up comics thrown in to keep it fresh. Standouts included a brilliant performance by local crooner Yolanda Adams, a tireless career mixtape of a set by LL Cool J, and side lounge Cheap Beats by Dre sets by the Philly soul group Kindred The Family Soul.
