SUNRISE, Fla. -- A controversial late goal tied the game, and the Winnipeg Jets made the most of it. Andrew Ladd and Kyle Wellwood each scored goals in a shootout and the Jets beat the Florida Panthers 4-3 on Monday night. Evander Kane scored two goals and Wellwood also scored in regulation for Winnipeg. Ondrej Pavelec stopped a season-high 39 of 42 shots from the Panthers. Tomas Fleischmann scored two goals in the third period for the Panthers and Jason Garrison also scored for Florida, while Jose Theodore made 28 saves. Each team scored a goal in the games final minutes of regulation. It was Kanes second goal that tied it 3-all at 19:10 that caused the disputed goal. There was a loose puck bouncing in front that Kane backhanded into the net in mid-air. One referee immediately waved it off but the others signalled goal. The goal was awarded to the Jets after a video review to determine if there was a high-stick. "There were three calls on the play," Kane said. "Disallowed, then they called it a goal on the ice, and then they went upstairs. Ive never really seen that before, but it was nice to see them make the right call." The Panthers didnt see it that way. "When you get it waved off that emphatically, the referee is standing there and he waves it off three or four times, youre under the assumption its going to be a no goal," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said. "Its surprising, very surprising, that it would go from that to, all of a sudden, goal. When a guys waving it off that much, its a shame. I think some people will learn some lessons from that. I think there was a mistake made on the ice and unfortunately it cost us a point, a very expensive point." There were some nervous moments for Winnipeg as they waited for the review. "No, I wasnt confident, but I thought that it was good," Jets coach Claude Noel said. "I wasnt confident that it would hold up. The review is the review, they get a different angle and different people looking at it, so you just hope that things fall your way." Fleischmanns second goal came on a power play with 2:10 left and gave Florida a 3-2 lead. His shot from between the circles went over Pavelecs shoulder. "I wanted to go down low but they took it away so I went to the middle and it worked out," Fleischmann said. "I just shot it and it went in." Trailing 2-1 in the third, the Panthers tied the game on Fleischmanns first goal. Mike Weavers shot was deflected backwards off the skate of a Jets player. Fleischmann picked up the puck before the defender could find it and swept it past Pavelec on the stick side at 3:13. It was an important win for the Jets, in the midst of a seven game road trip. "A big character win. We didnt let that last goal put us down," Ladd said. "We came back and found a way to get another one and get a win." The Jets scored the games first goal at 3:44 of the first. Ladd took the puck from behind the net, then centred it to Wellwood low in the circle. His one-timer beat Theodore. The Jets stretched their lead to 2-0 on Kanes power-play goal later in the period. Kane grabbed a loose puck in the left circle and his ensuing wrist shot got past Theodore at 9:58. Florida closed to 2-1 with 20 seconds left in the first when Garrisons slapshot from just inside the blue line went past Pavelec, just under the crossbar. It was Garrisons third goal in three games and fifth of the season, matching his goal total in 73 games last season. Garrison leads all NHL defencemen in goals. Notes: Florida F Marco Sturm skated in his 900th career game, becoming the first German-born player to do so in the NHL. ... Florida C Marcel Goc played in his 400th career game. ... The Panthers had a season-high 20 shots in the first period and 40 for the game. ... The Jets are now 2-1 in their season-long seven game road trip. ... Hes on the cover of a video game now -- and even appeared on Conan OBriens show to promote it. The Detroit ace isnt shying away from all this extra attention, but hes determined to stay focused on the season ahead. The Tigers begin spring training workouts for pitchers and catchers in less than six weeks. "Im trying to keep everything as normal as possible," Verlander said. "Its easy to get pulled in a lot of different directions." Verlander will be hard pressed to top last seasons dazzling performance. After winning 24 games and leading Detroit to the AL Central title, the hard-throwing right-hander became the first starter since Roger Clemens in 1986 to take MVP honours. Along the way, he threw a no-hitter, led the league in strikeouts and routinely reached triple digits on the radar gun, becoming one of the games most recognizable faces and helping the Tigers reach the AL championship series. Of course, Verlander also threw a career-high 251 innings, and that doesnt even count pressure-filled starts in the playoffs against the New York Yankees and Texas Rangers. At age 28, Verlander is in the prime of his career, but following up on last years heavy workload will be a test. He says his off-season regimen hasnt changed much -- although he had to wait a bit to start preparing for 2012 because his 2011 season lasted well into October. "Just kind of pushed it back a couple weeks," he said in a brief phone interview with The Associated Press. Verlander took pride in his preparation last season. After some disappointing Aprils, he showed up at spring training with a different approach, treating the preseason a bit more like the regular season. Verlander was solid for his first few starts, then his season really took off in May, when he threw his second career no-hitter at Toronto. Soon after that, Verlander established himself as the front-runner for the Cy Young Award and even reopened debate over whether pitchers can be MVPs. He ended up winning both awards. The hoopla from the regulaar season helped prepare Verlander for the off-season -- and the celebrity status that comes with all his honours.dddddddddddd He takes it mostly in stride, although there are times his place among baseballs stars really hits home. "When I was the cover of the video game, that was pretty cool," he admitted. Verlander is on the cover of Major League Baseball 2K12 and is helping promote a contest in which competitors can try to qualify for a possible US$1 million prize by throwing a perfect game on their Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 consoles. The competitors with the top eight perfect games qualify for a live tournament to crown the champion. Verlander was on OBriens show Wednesday night to talk about the contest. He also chatted a bit with the TBS host about his superstitious habit of eating from Taco Bell the night before his starts. Soon it will be time for Verlander to put his off-season obligations to the side and report to spring training. Its been a quiet off-season so far for the Tigers, whose biggest addition to this point has been reliever Octavio Dotel. Detroit also signed backup catcher Gerald Laird, whose job will be to catch an occasional game and allow starter Alex Avila to rest. Avila was one of the biggest reasons behind Detroits successful season last year, hitting .295 with 19 home runs. But he also started 130 games at catcher and took a beating behind the plate. "I think he got worn down by the end of the season," Verlander said. "He would never admit that." Aside from his own teams moves, Verlander has also kept an eye on the rest of the free agent shakeups around baseball. The Los Angeles Angels signed Albert Pujols, meaning the slugger will now be in Verlanders league. They also signed C.J. Wilson, who pitched for the Texas team that beat the Tigers in the ALCS. "The Pujols-C.J. Wilson signing was a big splash," Verlander said. "Obviously, Im excited to face Albert." Pujols is 5-for-10 lifetime against Verlander, including post-season at-bats. He homered off him in the 2006 World Series, when Pujols was playing for the St. Louis Cardinals. But Verlander was a rookie back then. cheap nfl jerseys Cheap Soccer Jerseys ' ' '
